Rhea heaved a huge sigh of relief and sagged against the closed door as Adam left without using any of his usual charm on her. It was starting to get on her nerves that every time he was around she felt so uncomfortable that she could barely say a decent word to him. And she was also fed up of his supposedly undying love for her.
It was not that she did not like him. She did. In a big way. But had never thought of him as anything except her elder brother. Just like Zach Cooper. She had grown up as Ashton’s Cooper’s daughter and was closest to Zoey. But had been brought up with Adam and Zach, the one she considered her brothers. The only family she had after her own father Slade Palmer had disowned her like she was dirt.
And when Adam had so openly told her that he wanted her, she had felt insulted. It had been something beyond her imagination and her already poor opinion of the male species had not helped. She had been so shocked by his vehement declaration on her birthday party that she had not known what to make of it.
Had it been a spur of a moment thing? Finally, when she got no news from him for almost a week, she had tagged Adam as one of the philanderers who would stop at nothing to get a woman just to satisfy his whim.
And then bang! Everything they had worked for in their relationship had broken. Her trust in him. Her love for him. Her respect for him. And even when days later, he had phoned to apologize it had been too late. Rhea Palmer had already constructed a barrier around her heart which had helped her survive the loss of her best friend.
And that barrier had been as rock solid as ever. She could still remember last year when Adam had visited her in her apartment for another ardent proclamation of love for her birthday. She had had enough! It had spoilt her birthday and two days later she had fled to New York for some peaceful moments. Thankfully, Zoey had followed her and she had not been alone in her new venture.
Adam Crighton had been the last person on her mind since she had been busy working as internship in the modelling agency of Adam’s late grandmother Anastasia Forrester after just completing her degree.
It had been a pleasurable experience and even if apprehensive to be back, she wanted to be home for her birthday to celebrate with the ‘gang’. How she wished Adam would forget his so-called love for her and become who he had been once again. Life was so less complicated then.
She jumped guiltily as she saw Zoey watching her closely and she quickly straightened her body which was still against the closed door. It was relief which had her legs so jelly like, nothing to do with seeing Adam after almost a year.
“Hey!” she cried to Zoey masking her real turmoil which was raging inside her. She had no reason why her heart was beating so loudly against her chest and her hands were moist with sweat. “Is that breakfast I smell?” she asked glad that her voice sounded normal.
She was ravenous especially after having jogged before coming back to Adam’s house. When Zoey had asked her to drop by Adam’s house, she had been unwilling remembering the ardent declarations of the past year. That was why she had headed straight next door to her home only to be confronted with her father.
“What are you doing here?” she had cried shrilly at the unexpected figure watching her. The latter had frowned dismissing her presence like she did not even existed and she had phoned Uncle Ashton. It was what she had been expecting. Slade Palmer had not uttered a word to her for a very very long time and she had no inkling whatsoever to talk to him. Uncle Ash told her that her father was back in town for a while and was using her house; the one which Uncle Jake had gifted her for her eighteenth birthday.
Since she no longer had the capacity to argue with her father and they could never co-exist, she had no choice than to head for Adam’s house in the early morning. But not before packing a few essential things she might need for the road. Thankfully, they lived a few blocks away and she could go back to her own house anytime.
The toughest part was that she had just to make sure that not to encounter her father during her visits. It was going to end up ugly and she was drained of her parent fighting energy, if ever something like that even existed!
Sometimes she wished she could be as bad daughter to him as he was a bad father. But she was made of another kind of stuff it seemed. Even if he was a vile person, she still considered him as her father. It still hurt; the way he shunned her but she was used to it now. She did not expect anything from him since she had the Cooper and the Crighton family.
“Yes. Want some?” Zoey asked her breaking into her thoughts.
“Sure,” she replied grinning and walking to the kitchen. “Have you met Zach?” she asked her friend who shook her head in answer.
“No not yet. Adam had called him over this afternoon. You know how he is. Working and working,” Zoey told her rolling her eyes in a majestic way.
Zach Cooper was indeed a workaholic. He did not even have a proper house and used Adam’s house as his sanctuary the few days he decided to get back home for some sleep. Zoey had tried to talk some sense into him but her brother was as obstinate as their father. For him each project was a challenge and he never got tired of undertaking every one of them.
Unlike Adam. He was one to take things lightly. Everything. Too lightly even. And that was why Rhea had difficulty in believing that his so called proclamation of love was true. Adam Crighton was one of a kind.
Once, he had convinced his father that he wanted a Mercedes but just after the sale, he had decided that it was not good enough. He was that fickle and Rhea was sure that his love for her would also fade with time. And besides, if her own father was unable to love her, she doubted that someone else could.
“That’s good. I wanted to invite him for my birthday party too. We’d better start calling some friends for tonight,” she suggested but was unprepared for the next question.
“So what’s with you and Adam?” asked Zoey suddenly out of the blue which made Rhea jump and spill her tea.
Where the hell had that question come from? She and Zoey had never talked about Adam except for the time when he had told her that he wanted her. And at that time, Zoey had told her to ignore him and that Adam must have been drunk or something. After that, they had never mentioned the topic again.
So, Rhea had never told her best friend that Adam Crighton had been calling her every morning to profess his undying love for her. But Zoey had been present in the flight yesterday and when Adam had called it had been difficult to avoid her. She had dismissed the call ten times before finally listening to what he had to say with clenched jaws. But Zoey had found out that it was Adam and had put two and two together.
Hell, she did not know what to make of it and asking for someone else’s opinion would only complicate things further. That was why she had decided not to share that fact with anyone and to dismiss the situation as a passing thing.
Which she had succeeded. Until yesterday. Whenever Adam had called when she had been in New York, she had taken the call far from the ears of Zoey; in the bathroom or toilet. When Adam had called her in the plane it had been difficult for her to move away as her friend had already seen the caller’s identity. And had heard everything by the look of it. She sighed. It was going to be a long discussion, she could feel it.
“There’s nothing between me and Adam,” she replied blandly deliberately being dupe because she knew Zoey would get easily bored.
As assumed, the latter blew a deep breath to express her impatience before watching her with hooded eyes. “Don’t be so dumb girl. I mean I knew what happened two years ago but you have never mentioned that Adam was still calling you.”
“I didn’t because there was nothing to tell. I mean come on! You know Adam as much as I know him. He changes his mind every second,” she scoffed dismissing the concern.
At that Zoey lifted her eyebrows mockingly in her direction. “Two years is not even comparable to one second Rhea. Why don’t you tell me what the real problem is?” her friend asked and Rhea was at a loss for words. Did Zoey believe in Adam’s declaration of love now? What happened to the best friend who had backed her up when he had propositioned to her?
“I can’t believe you’re saying that!” she stomped exasperatedly like a small child but was beyond caring. “You’re supposed to be on my side!”
“I am on your side honey. Except I want to understand. For me it’s quite clear if a guy is still after you for two years without having even dated you, then he must be damned serious about you” Zoey said in a derisive voice still looking at her with her lifted eyebrows.
“B…But what about the fact that I don’t love him back?” she retaliated stuttering in spite of herself. It happened every time she was over emotional and sometimes had to calm herself down to be able to talk.
“Have you told him?”
“Told him that I d…don’t love him?” queried Rhea puzzled.
“Yes dumbo!”
“Errm no I never even had the chance. But wouldn’t you think it obvious by the way I’m acting? I mean if I loved him back, aren’t I supposed to appear more willing than I am actually?” she asked clearly surprised that her friend would ask her such irrelevant questions.
“Oh, I don’t know. Love is not always rational,” said Zoey enigmatically and when Rhea looked at her friend with a frown, she continued. “Who knows? Maybe he loves you so much that he is still hoping that you might change your mind.”
“Oh there you go again!” muttered Rhea crossly. “How many times do I have to tell you that Adam is not serious about me?”
“It wouldn’t be apt for me to comment on his feelings. I mean it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to judge his feelings because I really don’t know how he feels. But personally I think he must be pretty serious if he’s still after you.”
“Precisely! It’s not love. It’s an infatuation. Or worst his obstinacy!” she cried frustrated that her friend was not seeing eye to eye with her theory. That had been the main reason she had been reluctant to talk about the whole thing in the first place. She just knew everybody would be in favour of Adam and that would leave her alone which was her worst fear.
“Okay, let’s draw a line on that. What he feels is not important here. Let’s focus on what you feel,” her friend said wisely seeing her frenzied state.
“Right. And I don’t love him,” Rhea repeated stubbornly.
“So you said. Are you sure about those feelings? I mean it’s a “hell no way” or “hell maybe” kinda thing?”
“Hell no way! Zo, come on! It’s Adam we’re talking about, remember?”
“Yeah exactly!”
“But he’s already my best friend. My neighbor. My mentor for so many mundane things. I don’t want to add lover to the list,” she finally confessed in a small voice. It was true. She depended too much on Adam and was not willing to have her life revolve around him at least not more than it already did.
Zoey froze at her words looking at her closely and Rhea felt uncomfortable under her scrutiny. Heaven only knew what conclusion she will end up with this time. But surprisingly she said nothing and seemed to muse on the silence.
“What?” asked Rhea after a long pause feeling irritated that her friend was not voicing out her opinion.
“Nothing. I was just wondering what it would take to just hit you in the head and be evicted without attempt to murder,” her friend scorned and she scowled back.
“Don’t you dare! You have no idea how close we were. It’s been two years since we have not been talking and I miss him like hell. Except I want to be like we were before. Not like we are now, awkward and not even speaking to each other properly.”
“Well, in that case you should change that. Don’t avoid him. If you don’t love him back, don’t give him more footage to come after you. I don’t even understand why you act so weird around him anyway. If you don’t love him, he’s not supposed to affect you so.”
“He doesn’t!” denied Rhea hotly. “I just feel uncomfortable around him, that’s all.”
“Well, that’s my point. If you don’t have any feelings for him, his feelings for you shouldn’t affect you! You’re the one who kicked him out of your life. And you’re losing a sincere friend in the process.”
Zoey was playing the devil’s advocate, she knew. At least Zoey was not forcing her to love Adam back; she guessed she should be grateful for having been spared that. And she was right too in her own thinking. Except that everything gets more complicated in real life.
“I know!” she exclaimed frustrated. “And it is precisely what I have been trying to avoid ever since he had started this whole thing. I so wish I could turn back times and everything would be like it used to be.”
“Oh silly girl! This has never worked for anyone else. So you’d better stop having wishful thoughts and do something. Either you accept him or you tell him clearly that you don’t love him and you want to be his friend.”
“But I don’t want to hurt him!” cried Rhea at the mere idea of confronting Adam. He made her nervous and she knew it was because she was aware of him. That was why she preferred avoiding him whenever possible. And she did not know how to handle the sultry looks he keeps sending her way which made her stomach churn. Out of discomfort.
Zoey threw her a murderous look. “You can’t eat your cake and have it too, baby. This is unfortunately the toughest rule of life.”
“Damn! I must be out of my mind!” Rhea said sagging on the sofa again when they reached the living room after breakfast. Her head was pounding and there was no point in this discussion. They were not even able to conclude about Adam’s true feelings.
“Exactly. I don’t even know why you’re telling him no. He’s handsome, rich and more important head over heels in love with you. What do you need more?”
There it came! Rhea was unable to suppress the anger which burned her at the words from her so-called friend. Wasn’t she supposed to understand that love could not be provided on demand? And Rhea was certain that she did not love Adam Crighton back, at least not in the way he was expecting her to.
“Well, I need to love him too!” shouted Rhea now practically seeing red.
“Right, I agree with you on that part,” Zoey quickly assured her. “But I’ve never seen you serious with any guy. I couldn’t help wondering what kind of guy you’re actually waiting for,” she said in a slightly mocking tone which made her flinch in spite of herself.
How could she confess to Zoey that love would be wasted on her? She was not one who believed in love or commitment or forever and ever. Her parents had hurt her so much that she was not even willing to invest in another relationship which would be futile and would only end up hurting her. She was a lost case and could never be cured.
But Zoey Cooper had been surrounded by strong family bonds all her life and she would never understand her predicament. For Zoey, life was a gift whilst for her it was a struggle. Life was like that. Good to some and the worst to others. Unfortunately, no one had ever said that life should be fair.
It was not that she was jealous of her friend. On the contrary, thanks to her she had been able to know what a family truly was. Zoey had shared her family with her and treated her like her little sister always protecting her from the snide remarks in school. But the wound had been inflicted since a very tender age and would always be part of her.
“So, why don’t you tell him? Tell him that you don’t love him. No matter how much his heart breaks, you need to tell him that you have no feelings for him whatsoever. And that you wish to remain his friend forever.”
It sounded pretty final to her and Rhea felt a pinch in her heart at the thought. She knew her refusal would break Adam’s heart and he would no longer be the jovial character she had always associated him with. That was the main reason why she had been stalling the confrontation between her and Adam. But Zoey was right.
It was time to face the music. She was starting to get so fed up with Adam’s attitude that it was starting to affect her social life. Not that she had an extremely busy one but still she wanted her peace of mind. And her best friend back.
And besides she knew Adam well enough. There was no possible way that Adam loved her in the way Zoey believed. Zoey was a romantic at heart despite her tough exterior. Rhea knew she only dated so many guys because she had been hurt in the past. Badly hurt. And she wanted a way to relieve her grief. Not that Rhea blamed her.
Throwing thoughts of Adam out of her mind, she changed the subject and concentrated on her birthday bash. She was throwing a party tonight and she was thinking of inviting Adam over but before that she had to talk to him. She had to tell him what she really felt for him and what she wanted from him.
Ultimately, she decided that if she wanted her original relationship with Adam, she had to stop behaving like an awkward teenager in front of him.
“I think you’re right,” she finally told Zoey out of the blue. “I need to tell him that I don’t love him and I’m going to find him in the office.”
“No wait! Aren’t you meeting him for your birthday party tonight? Maybe you could find a private place to tell him then. And besides I will be there for him if he needs a friend,” Zoey said her voice trembling and Rhea knew she was worrying about Adam.
And she got nervous again. It was going to be a tough ride tonight but she toughened her resolve; she had to face him like a grown up woman now. She was twenty three for Heaven’s sake and she could take her own decisions.
Everything was fair in love and war. And this was love for Adam and war for her!
It would be tough for Adam in the beginning but he would get used to her refusal in the end. She had to tell him clearly that she was tired of his attitude and wanted him back like the best friend he had always been to her. She had to tell him gently that she cared but not in the way he wanted. And that would be the end of it.
Adam could hardly believe it when he saw the message flashing on his phone screen. Rhea had asked him for her birthday party. For someone who had gone out of her way to avoid him for the past two years, she had suddenly made progress. Maybe Zoey had talked some sense into her and she had started to see him in a positive light. But Adam was no fool. He knew that Rhea was not going to crumble her barrier just like that. He knew about her inner feelings; more than she herself knew them. She was a broken soul and Adam wanted to mend her; just like he had set everything right in her life before by making her part of his family. With a curse, he shut the file in front of him feeling unable to concentrate. Life was not fair sometimes. For some, life was like eating sugar candy all the way like his own life had been. Born with a silver spoon in the mouth, he had the most wonderful parents on earth and had never lacked anything. Whether it was materialistic wise or emotion wise. While for Rhea
Damn! And double damn! Rhea stood stunned at his last sentence not knowing what to make out of Adam. He was such a paradox. Last year, he had tried to seduce her and this year he was acting like the past two years had not even existed!Like he was the best friend he had always been. Rhea would be damned if she could figure out what was going on in his mind. He was so damn unpredictable! So she managed a tentative smile instead deciding not to give him more importance. She was already unhappy with herself for not having the audacity to tell him that she did not love him. She knew that she would have lost him forever as a friend and she so did not want that. If that made her weak, then so be it.“Sure, let’s go,” she said casually and followed him downstairs.Which was quite a sight. There was a crowd gathered in every empty space available in the living room which was big enough to accommodate at least a hundred guests. Damn! How had the party gotten so out of hand? She had not realize
Adam could not help feeling glad that the party was over. Except that his apartment looked like it had been ransacked by raccoons. Exhausted, he threw his body on the nearest sofa and closed his eyes to block away the hideous sight. He was damn tired and had to work tomorrow but he had to restore his house to a modicum of order else his housekeeper Jane would just kill him."Adam, why don't you and Zach go upstairs and get some rest?" Zoey offered. "I will manage everything. And besides we will sleep through the day tomorrow while you two have to get back to work."At her words, he could not help himself; he jumped up to kiss Zoey. She was such a darling! As he made his way upstairs, Rhea looked like she had something to say but when he furrowed his eyebrows at her, she schooled her expression clearly not going to say what she had in mind and he dropped the subject. At that point, he did not care. All he wanted was to have some sleep before checking the account sheets again first thin
Rhea’s plan was not working. The first advice for being the perfect girlfriend was “Be feminine but not weak” and that was why she had been acting like a fragile emotional wreck around Adam last night. But instead of feeling angry with her, Adam had been patience personified.Damn! Zoey had been right; it had backfired on her. She had been so tempted to cancel their “date” at the last minute. Especially when she had been damn sure that Adam was reading more into their dinner than he was supposed to. And the way she had behaved had only served to fuel his imagination instead of tampering it. Everything had gone out of hand. But she had acted exactly the opposite of what the magazine had said.By letting him open doors for her, letting him pull her chair and letting him choose the menu. It had not exactly been a show of weakness; but she knew it was something Adam would not appreciate. Back in high school days, he used to complain about how his girlfriends were too dependent on him; he
The more he thought about it, the more he became certain that there was something wrong. Two days had passed since the “credit card’ episode and Rhea had stayed clear out of his way since then. It was certainly not a coincidence that they had not crossed each other’s path while they were living in the same house. The only few seconds he had heard of her was when he had called her like every morning to tell her that he loved her. Except that it had been a one-sided conversation and he had to try after several disconnected calls as usual. On top of that, Adam had had his share of furtive looks from Zoey during those past few days and he suspected that they were cooking something up. Except he never realized how right he was until he returned home that evening and found Rhea already in his kitchen. Cooking! And now he was sure that he was right well at least literally. Rhea Palmer cooking in the kitchen was definitely something out of place. As far as he remembered, she had never been ab
The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, the article had read in the paragraph where it had advised a good girlfriend to cook for her man. And that was exactly what Rhea had done. Well, cook for him to show him just how bad a cook she was.And it had worked! For the first time since the whole episode had started, Adam had suddenly grown disheartened and grumpy instead of his usual infuriating enthusiasm. Rhea had given herself a mental high-five when he had practically fled from the kitchen when she had started on her “poor me” self about how she could not even manage to boil a decent pasta. It had been unbelievably fast and she had never expected her plan to work out so quickly. But it was too early to hope for the best; she would only confirm her theory the next morning when Adam would skip the dreaded morning call. And she could only hope that it never came again.Of course if it happened that way, she would never raise the subject again and they would be back to being good
The drive to the mansion was silent but not awkward. As usual, Zoey and Rhea were chirping happily in the back seat while he was driving them over to his parents. After a long time, his heart was feeling content and he was allowing himself to hope. Hope that there might be something for him which laid buried under Rhea’s demons.Despite himself, he could not help admiring her ideas. Zoey had sent him a copy of the online article and he had spent the afternoon reading the whole thing. Her whimsical behavior was all clear to him now. At the restaurant she had tried the first “Be feminine but not weak” tip and had managed to unsettle him. However, her “low maintenance” tactics had completely turned against her since she had been looking so hot and he had not bothered about a cent. And then her fatal mistake had been her determination to prove him that she could not cook. Which was the third tip of being a good girlfriend according to the article. And this morning she had tried her unhap
Rhea could not sleep a wink as her mind went over and over what had happened the previous night. It was so atypical of the Crightons. Well, she knew them from the day she was born and despite their massive wealth, they were not society people. The Crightons and Coopers rarely attended parties and social events if not for a really good cause. For them, family was everything. That was why Aunt Selena had been so affected when Zach had not shown up. But Slade Palmer had been part of their circle too and for a long time. Rhea could not believe they had chosen her over her father. She had been in that family because of his connections with them and it was weird that they had sided up with her. And Adam had been acting as her hero again. When would he ever learn? He wanted to make her happy she understood that. She felt the same way about him. Stifling a harsh expletive, Adam Crighton awoke with a start as the phone beside him rang shrilly in his ears. Groggily, he rubbed his hooded eyes which were still swollen with sleep and sat up glancing at the clock on the wall. Who the hell would be calling at this ungodly hour?“Hello?” he nearly barked in the phone, his voice warning the person off that it might better be something urgent.“Goooood morning sweetheart. I won’t ask you how you are feeling this morning because I think I have a pretty good idea,” replied the jovial voice from the other end of the receiver. What the hell was going on? Was he dreaming? It was like some déjà-vu except in a reverse position. Rhea was calling him so early in the morning and repeating the exact words he used to wake her up when she was in a foul mood.Adam frowned at the date his clock was showing. It was two days after he had been released from the hospital and he could not believe he had not socialized on for so long except for attending M
“Mom, I’m fine. Stop treating me like a kid,” Adam wailed as his mother fussed over how much worse it could have been.Adam was bored lying on the hospital bed and was in no mood for all that ado. It had indeed been a narrow escape but thankfully he had only hurt his head when bumping against the right door of the car. It was a miracle that he had managed to protect Zoey at the last second. Although he had not said anything, he was having doubts about the way that truck had collided against them.It looked like the vehicle had deliberately moved out of its lane to collide with his car. They had been on their way to the airport when the crash had occurred. Unfortunately, the collision had been fatal for the driver while he and Zoey seated at the back had been spared.Adam had seen the truck veer in their direction and Zoey who had been seated on the left would have been crushed had Adam pulled her to him and protect her with his body. That was when he had lost his momentum and bumped a
“Rhea, honey,” called her secretary Rosemary standing outside her office door looking like she had many questions but was refraining from being impolite. “There’s someone to see you,” she said in an effective voice but signaling her frantically with her eyes.“Anita, I’m busy. Is it important?” Rhea looking away from her eccentric secretary not even bothering to understand what she was saying. Dismissing the latter, she continued scrutinizing the dossier in front of her. Damn, this was more complicated that she had thought.“Well, there is a hunk and he said he came all the way from Orlando only to see you,” Rosemary finally blurted which made Rhea immediately look up from her files and felt her heart skip a beat. All the way from Orlando? Only to see her. It had to be Adam. And judging by the look of extreme happiness on the face of Rosemary, she had recognized Adam too and that was why she was so agitated. Joy engulfed her at the prospect. He had come for her! After two weeks of abs
Adam knew something was amiss. The house next door was too quiet, too gloomy for the past two weeks now and even as he peeked through his window, he could not see the usual porch light on. It was two weeks now since Rhea had managed to hurt him so much that he had decided to stop harassing her.It had been harassment; she had been quite clear about that. But whether it was out of habit or love, Adam just had to make sure she was okay. And the lack of activity from the nearby house was making him worried. Maybe she was out or something?Trying to be discreet, he peered once again out of the window trying to figure out what the hell was happening. Was she sick or something? Should he go and visit? Since she had made it clear that she wanted no more to do with them, nobody had visited her since the face-off. Not even Zoey.Even if he had reassured her that nothing was anyone’s fault and that he was okay, Zoey had been subdued during the past few days responding only when she was addresse
One week had gone by after the fatal confrontation. Rhea had received no phone calls since that day and she convinced herself that she was glad. It was what she had wanted all along. Then she wondered why she was sitting next to the phone and checking more than hundred times whether it was working or not.It was not as if she was wishing for him to call her. She was just surprised he had finally given up on her. When he had promised he would never let her go. Although she deserved it, she knew. She did not know why she was having second thoughts. It was better to keep things as they were; she had managed to destroy everything she had without much help from others.Even Zoey was avoiding her and Rhea no longer knew what to think. It would seem that she had been right to assume that every relationship of hers was borrowed from Adam’s account. She was such a pathetic person that she had to borrow from someone else’s friendship. But it was better that way, she told herself for the umpteen
Adam stopped abruptly as he caught sight of the scene which presented in front of his eyes. Just as he was jogging past Rhea’s doorstep, he saw a couple quite intimately enlaced seeming lost in each other’s embrace. When he got closer he got the shock of his life when he was able to define Rhea’s silhouette. For one second, he stopped short. Why the hell was Rhea standing so intimately close to a stranger? Alarmed, he looked over at Zoey who was trying to signal him frantically. She had her back to them and he could not read her frenzied expression. He was too pissed off to even try.“What’s with you?” he mouthed puzzled and impatient. Thankfully, Zoey was close enough to catch his language.“Good sex,” she was saying over and over again and pointing in their direction in an obvious way. Adam wanted to slap her since she was behaving so crazy in such a complicated situation. Then it clicked.Good sex was the next thing the article had mentioned and instead of showing him that she was
Rhea stood listening to the conversation inside the room and could not budge as shock registered through her. Traitors. That was the first thing which came to her mind. They were all conspiring against her. And she felt rage course through her as she clenched her fists into two rigid balls.Too numb to react, she felt like she was an automatic mode when she turned back from the room and stealthily got out of the house. While she walked down the alley, she refused to think about anything before finding the sanctuary of her home again. When she did in a few seconds and the first thing she did was to bolt the door behind her and leant against the wooden object glad of the dull comfort it was offering. Her body felt limp and she sunk at the bottom unable to bear her own weight as shock still coursed through her. And she finally allowed the earlier events to replay in her head.Bored out of her mind with her own company, she had decided to join them to see what they were up to. Despite the
The next week flew by as Adam got really busy with his latest work assignment. He had little time to get back home and think about the past events. But he knew that Rhea had moved back to her house along with Zoey and that Zach was still invisible.Nothing had changed between them except the fact that Rhea had seemed to put a pause on her plan. He was still unsure of the reason. Maybe it was because he was unavailable for her antics or maybe it was because it was of the resounding kiss they had shared on Sunday.Adam wanted to believe it was the latter but it was too soon to hope. He’d rather busy himself in work for the time being instead of worrying too much. The more he thought about it, the more restless he became and wanted to do something about his situation. And he feared that he might act in haste and it would turn out to be his fatal mistake. It’s been more than two years that he had thought about his mistakes and what could have been. And it was two years too much. There was
