Rune.

I blinked once. Twice.

I racked my brain as I watched Kane, trying to make sense of what he’d just said and why he wasn’t telling me it was a poor attempt at a joke since he wasn’t one to crack jokes.

“You’re serious?” I raised a brow at him and received a frown in response. I scoffed and got up from the bed, maybe I hadn’t heard him clearly, maybe he didn’t just accuse me of making Caden lie about the curse.

“Just so I understand, you’re telling me right now, that Caden said I put him up to this?” Kane’s silence told me I was right, and that was in fact what he’d just said.

“Where is he? Where’s Caden? I need to hear him say those words with my ears because this is by far the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard all week, and you know very well I’ve heard a lot of ridiculous things this week.” I released a breath and placed a hand on my chest.

“This doesn’t even make any sense, because what was I supposed to gain from that? There was no one more heartbroken than me when he told

Rune. As I suspected, the envelope on the bed turned out to be a letter from an unknown sender, but in a different handwriting. My fingers trembled as I held the open letter in my hand. I stared at the written words but I was unable to assimilate them over the sound of my heart beating rapidly. It felt like some sort of ploy to get me wrapped up in trouble again, because why would anyone on my side with direct access to the pack house send me anonymous letters instead of pulling me to the side to tell me everything I needed to know about who was after me, or who I wasn’t supposed to trust. It didn’t feel as though whoever was sent the letters was on my side, but it also brought to mind who the mastermind was, if they had this strong of a connection with the wolves working in the pack house. I didn’t bother with trying to look for who must’ve sent it like the last time because by now, I knew I wouldn’t find them, and it would only be a waste of my effort, and judging from the thin

Rune. I quickly headed downstairs, to the kitchen, where I was met with Marian and Soph. Kimi had gone for her training. They’d all been waiting for me and had gone to the kitchen from the living area because they thought Kane and I were about to get into an argument, according to Soph.I guess they weren’t the only ones who thought so, because I noticed that the omegas were walking on eggshells around me when I stepped out of the room, with their heads bowed. They had no idea we fought last night, and we were in the process of giving each other some space. “I’m hungry,” I announced with a sigh, ignoring Soph’s words, and Marian jerked to her feet, eager to give me some food. We had our breakfast at the dining area, over a conversation about Caden and everything that had been going on in the pack in the past days. “I went to the human market the other day, and on my way back, I heard a few wolves talking in hushed voices about wolfsbane and…” Marian paused and put her index finger

Rune. “I think you should be more focused on what we have to do!” Soph cried, but I was more focused on how to find Kane.“That’s why I have you.” I wiggled my brows at her and she rolled her eyes with an annoyed puff. “I’m not the one who was falsely accused.” As her words sunk in, I realized she was right. “I fear you’re not taking this as seriously as you should,” she paused, “what are you going to do when you find him? What are you going to tell him?” She asked. I blinked back at her, my mind blank. Just a few seconds ago, I had a list of things I wanted to say to him, starting with an apology, but when I thought about it, I remembered I was annoyed at him for a different reason entirely. I sunk back into the chair with a sigh. Even though I was untouchable right now, clearing my name was supposed to be the first thing on my list, because nine months was a long time, and no one could tell what would happen in that time. I was untouchable now, but what if I was framed for some

Rune. I took Soph’s advice and tried my hardest to stay away from Kane, which felt like the hardest thing I ever had to do since we shared a room and couldn’t even talk to each other. Yes, I was still mad at him for what he did, but over the past four days since that night, my anger had died down and I was only mostly annoyed that he didn’t try to apologize to me.Looking on the brighter side, it meant Soph was right about Kane staying away from me since he thought I was angry with him. Our situation made it easy to have the meeting for the mission and how it would go down. Myself, Soph, Kimi, and everyone involved, were counting the hours till the m would be set in action, and as the day drew closer, my heart beat faster. I didn’t think I’d be capable of going through with it, but every time I voiced my concern, Soph and Kimi would calm me down and tell me everything would go according to the plan. Their words helped, but just a little—at least until they left and I was alone wit

Rune. “Rune, are you okay? You don’t look too good.” Soph pointed out. I raised my eyes from my empty plate to meet her narrowed ones filled with concern. “Huh?” I widened my eyes to appear brighter, “I’m fine. It’s just that…” I gulped hard. “Just what? Don’t tell me you want to back out when we’re just hours away from doing this,” she said, referring to the mission. I sighed. “No. I don’t want to back out. I can’t,” I sucked in a breath. “Then what is it?” She probed.“I might’ve reconciled with Kane last night,” I bit my lower lip in shame. Soph’s eyes widened, along with Kimi’s. Kimi was up to date with everything, including the plan to put a little distance between myself and Kane. “He came at me unexpectedly. I tried to stall but it didn’t make sense to keep being annoyed after he apologized.” I explained. Soph sighed, rolling her eyes. “This is what I hate about wolves in love.” She barfed, rolling her eyes again while I froze. Wolves in love? As in I was in love with

Rune. We didn’t get caught. At least up until we infiltrated the dungeon. It wasn’t by any means an easy task, but with the rigorous planning, we were able to go in undetected. The dungeon was nothing like I imagined it to be. Surely, it was an underground building with huge iron rods here and there that made up most of the building. With cells that were equipped with silver doors making it impossible for the wolves held inside to escape even in their wolf forms. It was dark and eerie, and the overall stench of the place could send normal humans into a heart attack, but I had expected it to be smaller and tight. “What are you looking at? Keep moving!” The hefty guard in charge barked at Soph and me, causing the tray in my hand to falter. Soph and I disguised ourselves as serving guards for the prisoners, and thankfully, we found a way to situate Aaron at the first gate and Rodney at the second gate, or else it would’ve been impossible for us to make our way in. The guard in charge

Rune. “Whew! I’m happy we didn’t waste so much time there. We have enough time to treat ourselves to a midnight snack before heading home. You in?” Soph whispered as we retraced our steps away from Caden’s cell. I heard her and understood all that she was saying, but my mind was focused on something else. I was right there in the dungeon, the same place my mother and sister had been kept for almost ten months now. I’d been dying to see them, to let them know that I was alive and working to find a way to let them out of bondage even if it would take a while. “Are you even listening to me?” Soph nudged my side and I turned to her. “I need your help,” I told her. Soph sucked in a breath, as though she could already tell what I needed her help with. I blinked a few times, letting my eyes roam around the long hallway to see if we were being watched. Thankfully, the Commander guard was nowhere to be found and the hallways were empty, save for us. “Rune…” she dragged. “I just want to s

Kane. There was nothing I loved more than playing my role as Alpha. I’d been at it for years and I never thought I needed a break until Jett’s interruption in my plans. I wanted to spend time with Rune to make up for everything that had happened in the past days, but I couldn’t do that. I released a sigh, pulling myself out of my thoughts and focusing on Irem, one of the squad commanders of the pack. Irem and his squad were out patrolling and they came across a freshly dug hole just a stone’s throw away from our border, with lots of charms in it. It was the first I heard about such a thing even from the other alphas, which only added to the severity of the case. “We’re being targeted, and we can’t tell who’s targeting us,” Irem said and I scoffed. “You can’t tell? Isn’t it quite obvious?” I asked him and murmurs erupted. “Alpha, we can’t be so sure Alpha Levi is behind this,” Greyson said and I shot him a glare. The goddess was a witness that I never felt satisfied with the vic

Rune. I stilled as I watched Kane fall to his knees, covered in his blood and others, and more flashes of my dream engulfed me.But things were supposed to be different. We changed our fate, he was supposed to save me and take me back with him to our territory, so why?I looked up to the sky, and the full moon stared back at me, but the more I stared at it, the more I felt as though it was coming to me. Suddenly I felt a sharp pain all over my body, and cracks as though my bones were breaking. “Zarah! What is happening?” I yelled out, but Zarah remained silent. I didn’t know what was happening until my claws began to lengthen, and white fur emerged from my skin, coating my entire body. “We are shifting,” Zarah finally said, “and I will end this!” She added and I watched as she lunged at Black, growling dangerously at him. “Rune!” He called out, but Zarah wasted no time in biting off one of his limbs, giving him no choice but to shift. We ran around the pack in search of my fathe

Rune. Black had arrived shortly after to show me to my room, claiming I’d have more time to talk with my father at dinner because he wanted me to rest since I was pregnant.I didn’t want to leave my father, but I was grateful for the solitude the room provided because I could finally think. I replayed everything my father said to me, picking out the most. My father was innocent, and he knew where my mother and sister were kept, which meant we had to be careful if we didn’t want to be caught. When my father said Black planned to kill him and force me to stay with him, I believed him instantly, because a person who could conceal his real identity to carry out various plans was dangerous and was capable of doing plenty of damage. Before we parted, my father had told me to find a way to contact Kane because he was the only one who could save us, but I doubted I had such skill. I had never initiated a mind link with Kane when we were in the same territory, talk more of doing so while

Rune. Black had suggested we visit my father, claiming that it would help me make a better decision; the decision to go to him. I was so confused, and numb that I couldn’t even cry or scream, instead, I sat stiffly on Black’s back, laying out my thoughts and thinking about what my next course of action would be. It was then I recalled my dream. My dream had some truths to it, like how I’d seen my father with Black, and some Elders, while the entire Shadow Moon pack was wiped away. “I know you’ve missed your father, so I knew this would warm your heart,” I heard Black say, but I was not bothered by him. I didn’t know what was happening, but I knew I couldn’t do anything until I heard all the sides of the story, the most important side being my father’s.Black ran for a while and stopped at the border of territory nearly thirty minutes later. My brows knitted in confusion as I recalled that the nearest pack to Shadow Moon pack was Pearl Crest, and if I was right then that meant Bla

Rune. I woke to the gentle warmth of sunlight filtering through the small window of the cabin. Blinking away sleep, I stretched and sat up, realizing I was still in Black's cabin. The events of last night came rushing back to me—the unexpected reunion with Black, the cozy cabin, the little talk we had. However, when I noticed the sun shining brightly, I realized I had slept in and Black did not bother to wake me.Frowning, I slipped out of bed and padded to the door, intending to find Black and ask him to let me leave. To my surprise, he was nowhere to be found. A sense of unease settled in my chest as I searched the cabin, finding only silence and emptiness.Resigned, I located a pen and paper on a nearby table and hastily scribbled a note:Black,I appreciate your hospitality, if you’re reading this it means I’ve gone. I’ll see you some other time.Rune.I folded the note and placed it on the kitchen counter, intending to leave immediately. But as I approached the door, I realized

Kane. The night air was thick with tension as I returned to Shadow Moon Pack after my secret mission. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a pale silver glow over the familiar grounds that now felt haunted by the feeling that something was wrong, but I deduced that it was my finding that made me feel that way. My mind raced with the revelations from my short trip to Pearl Crest, where I found they were the ones behind the charms and wolfsbane plaguing my territory. On my way home, I had made plans of what I would do and how to go about ending that pack and everyone in it for good, but upon entering the pack house, I found Soph, Jett, and Kimi gathered in the living room, their expressions somber and troubled. My eyes swept over them, dread pooling in my stomach. “What is going on?” I demanded, my voice low and urgent. No one spoke for a tense moment, their silence deafening. "Where is Rune?" I repeated, my voice rising with each word.Jett shifted uncomfortably, avoiding my gaze

Rune. “Black?”The cool evening air whispered through the dense trees as I stared at Black, my senses on high alert. Scanty rays of sunlight filtered through the branches, casting shadows on the forest floor. It was unusual to find anyone out here, let alone Black. He stood before me, tall and imposing, a smile in his eyes. "What are you doing here?"His smile widened, his eyes a mixture of relief and uncertainty. "I wanted to see you, Rune. I... I wasn't sure how, but then you appeared, as though the goddess herself guided you to me.""In Shadow Moon territory?" I raised an eyebrow, eyeing him warily. He nodded solemnly. "Yes. I had to see you."“What are you doing here though?” he asked, his eyes traveling up and down my body. I shifted uncomfortably in my tank top and black shorts. I ran out of the pack house without thinking and ended up leaving in such little clothing."I... I came out for some air," I stammered, feeling foolish. His gaze lingered on me, his expression unreada

Rune. A sigh escaped my lips when I no longer felt Kane’s presence in the pack; a dreadful feeling of emptiness settled in immediately, as though it was waiting for his departure. However, I had to wipe the sadness from my face when I headed downstairs nearly two hours later, taking note of the omega’s cleaning the pack house instead. Kane was away on a mission and I had a mission of my own; to track down the wolf sending those notes to me, and to make sure no one could tell Kane was gone.“Good morning,” An Omega greeted, making her way up the stairs.“Are you going up to clean my room?” I asked her, and she turned, long black hair swaying behind her before she nodded.“Don’t bother. Alpha is still sleeping,” I told her, pulling off the best nonchalant attitude I could muster so she wouldn’t suspect me, and thankfully she didn’t.Everything was going well, and no one came to ask if they could clean the room again, but it seemed our luck ran out when a group of elders came to seek K

Kane. “I hate to say it but her dreams bother me,” I said with a deep breath, “Especially when it shouldn’t,” I added, running my fingers through my hair.“Does it bother you because you think it could happen or because she’s the one who had those dreams?” Jett asked with a raised brow, and I frowned at him. We were lodged in his house, an hour after I had put my mate to bed. He had opted to drink, but I was more worried about the pack and Rune’s dream to indulge him, and now he was just trying to get on my nerves.“Are you crazy?” “Not quite,” he replied with a little laugh and I shook my head before I turned serious.“On a more serious note, I think I’ll have to visit the Fay soon, to hear more about this dream my mate had. I think we’re missing something very important here,” A sigh escaped my lips at the same time Jett nodded, taking a sip out of his alcohol right after.“If you’re making plans to see her, then that means you accept her? I thought you’d turn to your precious pri

Rune. “Talk to me,” Kane inched closer, staring intently at me. “I don’t know how accurate I am, or if this will mean anything to you, but I had a bad dream that the pack was set on fire, and a lot of wolves died.”My words were met with silence and Kane’s head hung low.“Did you hear me?” I tilted my head to search his face. “Fire you say?”I nodded. “I’m sure Soph has told you about the charms we found in the pack?” I nodded, patiently waiting for him to explain to me the relationship between the two things. “I’m forced to believe there’s a new pack targeting us, and they work closely with witches.”The seriousness of his words settled in and I found myself sitting up straight, my hands in his.“But what do you believe?”“I believe Pearlcrest is behind it. I mean it makes no sense that it’s a new pack because all the leads are somehow connected to Pearlcrest but yet, I’m being told something entirely different.”“Soph told me they are the ones with sightings of more charms?”H
