“Ouch..” my dad flinched as mum cleans the amputated area with saline solution. His hand was swelling already and I fear it may already be contaminated. My mum applies less pressure and once she is done, she starts to cover it in gauze wrap.
Audrey returns from the kitchen with a bag of ice and lays it on the table while my mother wraps his entire palms in a waterproof bag and goes on to dip it inside the bag of ice. The care she showed this man, the feelings she had for him, the love she showered him with her every touch.
I’m still trying to process all that happened this afternoon. My father lost his tiny finger today, who knows what may happen tomorrow? Or the day after? How do we raise a hundred and ninety grand within three weeks? Even if we sold this whole house and everything in it, it wouldn’t amount to anything, and where would we live after that? I don’t even have a penny saved up anywhere, and it hurt to see Audrey give out her college money that way. Audrey is smart, I know how badly she wants to go to college, now everything she had saved up was gone, just like that, and we have Harold Edgar to thank for it. The man we call father.
The sight of my father hurting was painful, but knowing he could have avoided this made me angry. He never learns from his mistakes, and even if we somehow manage to get out of this – which I doubt- he is still going to fall right back into his bad habits.
“I’m sorry Peaches,” My dad says gently. Peaches. His pet name for my mum. I used to like how that name sounded on his lips, but right now I just feel irritated.
I don’t doubt my parent’s feelings for each other. There are days when my dad can be overly sweet, there are days where he would cook for her and they would sing happily together while doing the dishes together, but mostly he caused her pain. They say love is pain, and if this is what it feels like, I don’t dream of ever falling in love.
“Sorry is not going to change anything,” My mother murmured.
“You know I had plans for you, for us,” he lifted my mum’s chin with his index finger so that she would meet his eyes. “I know I promised you I was going to quit, but I couldn’t resist. I want to do so much for this family, I want to take you and my lovely girls out of this slum, I want to do better, and I just thought it was the right move. The reward was so tempting Peaches. I could have won up to a million bucks. That kind of money would have changed our lives forever. The girls can go to college, we could have gotten a bigger house in the city,” he sighed “And I was this close to winning. I’m sorry it turned out this way,”
“Stop it Harry,” she slapped his hands away from her face and stands up from where she was seated opposite him. “Audrey gave up any hopes of going to school to save you,” She dabbed her hands on a towel and tossed it harshly on the table “You always make promises you never keep, and look where that got us. I mean, how are we supposed to raise that kind of money? Just how Harry?” she screamed.
“We should run,” Audrey suggested.
“There’s no running from Pablo,” Father says “He has his thugs watching me. If I make any attempt to run, then I’m dead, and besides, where could we possibly run to in this present condition? We can barely afford to feed, what would happen when we wander into unknown territory?”
“Maybe you should have thought of that before betting away such a large sum, Harold,” I snapped.
“Aria!” my mum snaps “He’s your father, and you must respect him, no matter what,”
I rolled my eyes “Then when is he going to start acting like one? Look around you father, nothing is working. And it’s because of all the wrong choices you ever made. We are all suffering because of your incompetence and your greed,” I went off at him.
“Aria…” mum’s warning voice did not stop me from glaring at my father.
With slow calculated steps, my father sauntered towards me. His face was bruised badly, but my father was a fine man, despite his abject state of poverty.
“You hate me so much Aria, and I totally understand why,” he says “But you have no idea the decisions I have to make for this family. You do not know what it takes to be a father …”
“I can see the effects of your decisions father,” I make a quote sign in the air with my index and middle finger “It’s the reason you have nine fingers left, and if not for Audrey’s selflessness, you probably would have…”
“Stop it right now Aria,” my mum screamed. She steps in between me and my father to glare at me. “You can’t say things like that to him. Not now, not ever,”
“Why do you always defend him?” I screamed, “Why mum?”
She shook her head “Just stop it Aria. He’s in pain already. Don’t make this worse than it already is,”
“Nothing could be worse than this, Mother,” I scowled.
“Guys, we should be cooking up ways to fix this instead of fighting,” Audrey says. Audrey is the peacemaker. Our characters are just as contrasting as our looks. She is soft and gullible, unlike me.
“Thank you, Audrey,” Father cast her a thankful glance and limped back to his chair. The old chair creaked as he deposited his weight on it and adjusted to a comfortable sitting position.
“What other options do we have?” my mum turns to him “We have sold out all our assets. We could work for Pablo if he wants,” she suggests.
My dad scoffed “I know Pablo, and I know what he wants,” he stated.
“And what’s that?” mum asks.
“He likes Aria,” dad says flatly.
My fists curl up in a ball beside me.
“What do you mean Harry?” mum’s eyes widened.
Father dips his hands back into the bag of ice and wouldn’t turn to make eye contact with any of us “You heard him, he said so himself. He likes Aria. The only way we can have him forget about the loan is if we let him have her,” he says.
I feel like the air had just been sucked out of my windpipe, and I had to hold the wall for support.
“What!” mum exclaims.
“Don’t scream like I just said something that isn’t unheard of. Right now, that’s the only solution I can think of. If any of you has any other ideas how we can raise two hundred grand in three weeks, then let us know,”
I blinked severally and once more, I feel my stomach begin to churn. He did not just say that. No, he can’t possibly be suggesting that I give my body to that swine to pay off his debts.
“Father, how can your mind even conceive a thing like this?” Audrey screeched, rising to my defense.
“Let’s be logical. What else can we possibly do? You all want me to die? I know how it sounds, but give me a better idea if you have any. I’m not saying you get married to him. Just be his mistress, what do you have to lose?”
His words were accompanied by a deafening silence. I stared unbelievably at the man that sired me. I didn’t think a day would come when we would be reduced to this. When I would be reduced to this.
“Please Aria. I feel terrible as it is, and this isn’t the life I’d hoped to live, hell, this was never the way I envisioned raising you and Audrey, but it has come to this, and we have to find a way to survive it,” Father says. “Please,”
“Harold. You do know what you are asking of your daughter? She’s seventeen,” My mum shrieked.
“Eighteen in a few days,” my father corrected. I’m surprised he even knows my birthday. He never buys me gifts or even says a simple ‘Happy birthday' but it appears as though he’s already thought about it. When he’d taken that loan, he had it somewhere at the back of his mind that if it didn’t turn out well for him, he’d make any of his daughters sell their bodies to pay back. Monster.
“I would do no such thing,” I spat out.
“Aria…” my mum start to move closer to touch me, but I ducked before her hands rested on my arms and made for my room.
“I can’t believe this,” I hear Audrey say, as she turns to follow me “You’re unbelievable,”
I slammed the door to the room hard with a loud thud but Audrey yanks it back open and joins me in the room.
“You are not going to sell your body to pay off dad’s debts especially not to that mongrel,” Audrey tries to reassure me.“The fact that he would even suggest it is appalling,” I paced the lengths of our small room. Small as it is, it happens to be the only place I find comfort in this house. I have shared this room with Audrey since we were little, but we learned to respect each other’s spaces. We decorated our sections differently and my side of the room is not as colorful as Audrey’s. We have two separate beds on each side of the room. Audrey always has a pink or multicolored bedspread laid, her medium-sized teddy bear sitting comfortably on the bed, a small reading table where she keeps all her favorite books, and a reading lamp by the side.On Audrey’s reading table is an old family picture. Mum held me cradled in her arms, with dad’s arms around her waist. They looked happy and so much in love. Audrey i
SLADEListening isn’t one of my favorite things. I learned to turn a deaf ear to a lot of things, particularly if it is coming from the werewolf council or any of the pack elders. It gets irritating having to listen to the same sermon over and over again when I am even more worried about the situation than they are. My nights are filled with nightmares, and my days with unending pressure.I didn’t grow Dark wolf Pack to be the strongest, largest, and most feared pack only for it to be taken away from my bloodline because of me. I made Dark Wolf Pack what it is today. My efforts brought us here, and I’m not scared of dying, far from it. In fact, if I die, I die a noble man, I die because of the sacrifice I had to make for my pack. I accomplished what I planned for my pack within six years of my reign. Something my father failed to achieve in his twenty-eight years on seat.I took on the role of alpha of Dark Wolf P
“I’ve been waiting for you, Alpha,” The red head sprawled on my couch licked her lips and caressed her thighs seductively. She is wearing black lingerie with matching black pencil heels, batting her eyelids at me like a cat.I grabbed her roughly by the arms and yanked her off my seats, anger rolling off me, but she squirms like a little school girl who’s just been offered cotton candy.“You know I like it rough, alpha,” she giggles.“What the fuck are you still doing here?” I barked. She flinched, Maybe I raised my voice a little too much, but I made it crystal clear before leaving this morning that I didn’t want her here when I got back.I had a one-night stand with the red head once, and that’s all it was supposed to be, that was our deal. Her name, I can’t even remember, but she wouldn’t give me breathing space after that night. She isn’t from my pack, I know better than to
ARIAMy eyes scanned the bathroom for the tenth time, checking to make sure I didn’t leave any spot unattended. It looked perfect to me but I doubt Mrs. Brown would be pleased with the result. She is never pleased with anything and I learned that within two days of working with her. I spent the last four hours scrubbing this particular toilet because Mrs. Brown wanted it perfect, as it was situated in the master’s bedroom of her mansion, and she spends most of her time in here than in her actual bedroom according to her.I looked longingly at the bathroom again. What I would give to have a proper shower in a bathroom so luxurious. It is even bigger than the living room in my house!Sweat trickled down my forehead, chest, under arms, and even my thighs. I’m exhausted. Within the last three days, I have taken up all kinds of jobs I could get my hands on to make money, and so has Audrey and
I thought Pablo and his gang were the scariest-looking men I had laid my eyes on in a long time, but the man standing adjacent to me reminded me of Hercules. He stood a reasonable distance away, yet one could easily see he was brawny. His well-defined muscles hugged his shirt that had a few buttons opened and the top and the sleeves rolled up as if he had come prepared for a fight, but his hands were tucked casually into his pant pockets.“Who the fuck are you?” Pablo brawled.“Leave the girl alone,” He repeated, his tone was quiet but commanding.I take the opportunity to wriggle my arms again in an attempt to get them free, but Pablo’s grip tightened even more. His colleague had released me to move towards the stranger, cracking his knuckles as he did.“You have a chance to turn around and walk away like you didn’t see anything,” Pablo’s colleague warned, but his words do not move this stranger
“You don’t need to, I can walk,” I doubled my steps, but his strides were way longer than mine, and in no time, I had to occasionally jug to meet up with his pace. There was no use being so strong-headed. Pablo could still be anywhere around here watching me.“Are you not interested in knowing what we need you for?” Marcel apparently wasn’t backing down. I’m not exactly short, but I feel like an ant walking beside him.The offer sounds tempting, but I don’t want to get my hopes up. Things just never worked in my favor. Nothing I ever did or hoped for went the way I wanted them and I gave up dreaming a long time ago. It’s almost like the universe worked against me.“What is it I have to do?” I asked casually. My ears were itching, and my mind was trained to receive whatever ridiculous thing he had to say.“We need an heir that only you can provide!” he rasped.&ldquo
The rumbling sound from my stomach served as a reminder that it needed food. Since I wasn't cleaning for Mrs. brown today, I had to return home earlier than usual, something I wasn't exactly happy about. Being around the four walls of that house was torture, the air around the gloomy environment could easily drive one into depression, and father's surly attitude made it even worse. These days, I hated seeing him. The mere thought of him angered me, and if I had anywhere else to be rather than in that house, then I would gladly go there.Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of friends. No one wants to mingle with a low life like me, rejection was nothing new to me and I can't say I am exactly the friendly type. I learned to keep to myself and maintain my own space as a child because no one ever really wanted to be seen with me.Did I get male advances? Yes, a lot. Nine out of the ten men I meet just want to get into my panties, but I learned quickly to differentiate bet
Everything I own fits into a small box, so packing wasn't difficult at all. There wasn't anything to leave behind, except for my bed of course and Audrey followed behind me as I wheeled the box to the middle of the parlour. Asides from mom and Audrey, the only thing I would miss in this house would be my room.My mum pulled me into a bone-crushing hug while dad was outside with the two men. Tears spilled out her eyes."I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner," she says, releasing me only to take me back into a tighter hug."Tell me what," I squeezed my brows together, but she just shook her head and clutched her mouth in her hands, her eyes red from too much crying."You will find out soon enough," she responds amidst tears. She checks me over, then crushes me into another hug."You're being weird. I'm coming back soon mother. Once the deal is completed, I'll be back. You're acting like you are never going to set eyes on me again," I lamented.Mo
I opened my eyes slowly to find Slade watching me and a small blush crept up my cheeks. “Why are you awake?” I asked him with a sleepy voice.“Just wondering what I did to get so lucky,” He smiled at me. “And you can go back to sleep, your mom is attending to Zion already,”I have gotten used to waking up at this time to feed my baby, but I had the night off today. It’s been three days after the mating ceremony and I have had to deal with a lot after that. We were also moving into a bigger house. Slade thought the penthouse wasn’t big enough to start a family which is just off considering how large it is. He wants Zion to have the best. Now that we share a mate bond, communication was easier between us. When I was overwhelmed, he’d feel it too, and did everything he could to make me feel better. He was a great dad to his son, and many packs were sending in gifts every day since the birth of Zion, wanting a form of friendship with Dark Wolf.Sapphire was sentenced to death, but only a
ARIA“You look so adorable,” my mom wiped her eyes with the back of her hands as she stared at me “Reminds me of when I married your dad. We didn’t have an elaborate wedding, but it was the best day of my life. Everyone thought I was crazy for marrying him, but it’s the one thing I know I did right and I’d walk down the aisle with him again if I had to,” she finished.“Mom,” I fought back the tears that threatened to fall to my cheeks. Luna Evelyn specifically warned me not to ruin my makeup, and I didn’t want to have to listen to her complain if I did the exact thing she warned me not to do.Today is the mating ceremony. The day I become Luna of Dark Wolf pack, and the day I have dreamed of since I set eye on my mate. It’s funny how much things have changed, almost unbelievable.I didn’t have any expectations coming to dark wolf, but I started to have expectations as the days passed. Expectations that I didn’t expect to come through. I’d hoped my mate will come to love me, but I’d al
SLADE“What happens to Sapphire?” My beta asked me. Since she was pregnant, I knew the council will not put her to death until the baby comes, but she’d lost her right eye completely and could not clearly see with her left. I don’t deny that I want her dead though, and by my hands. After all she did to my mate and my pack, she does not deserve to live. We’d lost several warriors and it saddened me. In all my years as Alpha, I’d not witnessed so much loss in my pack, even during the days of my invasion. My heart was heavy, but the thought of my son brought me joy. People were beginning to ask questions since many of them expected me to die. I did not just survive a curse, but also a silver bullet. I sighed, my right hands reaching up to clutch my chest while I drove with my other free hand. I needed to make a stop at the dungeon where Sapphire was being held and then to Allegra’s hut. I also know I need to address the members of Dark Wolf tonight. I had meetings with the council as w
ARIAI tore my eyes from my baby and turned to my mate. He was smiling down at me while our child slept peacefully. I’d gone into labour at thirty-two weeks, earlier than the doctor had predicted but my baby was surprisingly healthy. A full-breed werewolf would carry a child for six months, but as an hybrid, I was expected to carry my pregnancy for nine months, but my little boy had come out at thirty-two weeks. It’s been almost twenty four hours since I put to bed and I was not to be discharged until tomorrow. Slade has been beside me, only leaving my side to take his own medications. He was healing, the doctor had said, but he still had a bandage around his chest. It wasn’t hard to see that he was obsessed with this child. In the last twenty-four hours, Slade barely allowed anyone near him, not even those who’d come bearing gifts. There was still a lot going on in the pack after the fight. Dark Wolf had won but with many casualties. Audrey helped in taking care of the sick as I was
MARCEL“The hunters have fled the pack,” Alpha Hance informed me through mind link “They are outnumbered, but they still pose a threat,” he says.“We need the prisoners back in the dungeons. Every one of them that survived,” I tell him back.“Many of them have gone into hiding. Where the fuck are you and where the fuck is Slade. Alive I hope?” He asked with a concerned voice. I didn’t respond but cut off the mind link instead. How can I explain the situation to him? Someone needs to keep things going out there. Daryl was dead and Sapphire had been apprehended. From the way Aria disfigured her eyes, it’s unlikely that she will be able to see again. She’d still face judgment by the council, but her recruits were not backing off. It seems like some of the packs that agreed to work with her had ideas of their own. While many have surrendered and others fled, some of the packs were still going on with the war even though they were clearly outnumbered. Our warriors were not backing down,
ARIA“Slade!! No!” I screamed, wrenching my arms away from the man that still had his gun trained on me.“I swear I’ll shoot-“ I didn’t hear the rest of what he was saying as I rushed towards Slade, but Sapphire threw herself in my way, blocking me from reaching him. I heard gunshots behind me, then Marcel’s voice. When I turned, the man who had his gun trained at me was laying lifeless on the floor, and Marcel had Daryl by the neck, the two of them battling each other. Sapphire gripped my hair, pulling it hard, but I didn’t feel the pain from her hold. The only pain I felt was seeing Slade lay lifeless on the floor. I hit her jaw with my elbow and dodged a blow she aimed at me. I haven’t done a lot of training but I have watched the warriors train countless times. I’d watched Sapphire train and I was able to predict her next move. I saw her lunge for the gun on the floor, and I moved fast, kicking it out of the way. She rolled on top of me, punching me hard on the face before going
SLADEI clawed at the wolf in front of me while trying to shake off the one on my back. He fell to the floor and using my hind legs, I pinned him to the ground, making sure to finish off the first wolf before returning to him. Four others approached me with speed. My wolf was covered in blood, but I wasn’t tired. I took them down, one after the other but sustained an injury on my right side. I knew I had a lot of enemies, but Sapphire had gone overboard to bring them together. Even the warriors of Cross Shadow were involved, the pack I’d refused to join Dark Wolf. I wasn’t surprised, because I knew Sapphire was preparing herself and taking her time. What surprised me was that she’d sold us to the werewolf hunters.I felt a mind link coming through and I connected to Marcel while fighting off the last wolf.“We have another problem, Slade,” My beta tells me through mind link. I could hear him panting, his hard breath indicating he was fighting off an enemy.“What is it?” I asked him,
Of all the things Sapphire said, I knew she was right about one. Slade will not kill her if what she says is true, but then she isn’t going to walk out of Dark Wolf a free woman either. That much is certain. I stared at the phone in my hands many minutes after the call ended, pacing the living room and trying to calm my seething beast. There’s no way Slade expects me to sit here and not know what is going on out there, especially after the call I just received. The penthouse was full of members of the pack, young and old, and several warriors stationed inside and outside, and I know these guards will not let me out since Slade instructed it. I was getting frustrated as the sounds of gunshots continued outside. I was scared. I cursed when I felt a vibration again only to realize it was Slade’s phone this time. I picked up without hesitation, listening to hear the voice on the other end before speaking.“Alpha Slade, are you there?” A deep husky voice asked.“This is his mate. What’s
The crowd dispersed in chaos, everyone running to shelter. Silver bullets, the type that’ll kill a werewolf in seconds. My wolf recognized the scent as it filled the air. The screams of women and children, men trying to protect their wives filled everywhere. “Sapphire,” I muttered under my breath. It could only be her. She chose the right time. “Take them inside and keep them safe, Marcel,” Slade turned to his beta, handing me and Audrey over to him. “No,” I and Audrey chorused at the same time. Many guards had surrounded us, protecting their alpha and his heir. “Aria, Listen to me. I don’t have time to argue with you. You are carrying my baby. You have to be safe,” “So you expect me to just sit inside and do nothing?” I asked. “I’m not pregnant, I can fight,” Audrey said stubbornly. Slade groaned. He glanced at the men around us, and next thing I know, I’m being lifted off my feet. Myself and Audrey were taken into the house, along with many orders. Slade was gone in seconds as
