She tried. She fought. But a glance at the sneering smile on Rachel’s lips which was finally covered by Reginald’s, created a crack in her weak neutral mask.

Savannah felt a sharp blade twist in her chest, tearing apart the fragile threads that held her heart together. Air punched past her lungs and her eyes burned with tears, but they couldn’t wash away the grueling stain of her hurt. Pressing a hand to her chest, to rub out some of the ache, she clutched at her heart, but it bled out in her hands.

It wasn’t the words that hurt her. It wasn’t even being abused by Reginald that turned her into a hurting, emotionally stunted, bleeding mess. It was the bleakness of her existence, the realization that no one would ever regard her as someone with blood running through her veins. She’d just taken the fall for them, to keep their secret, and…they said those words to her.

Shaking her head, she turned and stumbled out of the room, her heart pounding in her ears, so loud she was sure it echoed
