Acceptance

Savannah’s eyelids fluttered open with a start, her lips parting on a sharp intake of breath. Slowly and inexorably as she stirred, she realized she was lying on a disgusting, bug-ridden mattress in a dimly lit room—which wasn’t exactly a downgrade from her previous life back at Hybern. But where was she? She had no idea how she got there.

Sucking in the stale and musty air, she tried to sit up but fell back down as her weak arms gave way beneath her. The only sound in the room was her own ragged breathing. Where was she? She wondered again but unsurprisingly, the mattress nor the walls gave her an answer.

She swallowed and instantly regretted that decision as a sharp pain pierced her chest. It felt like there was a lump inside her throat, and trying to push it down sent a hot path of pain lacerating down her lungs.
