Valerie moved towards the door of her workplace building , and she felt a soft touch on her shoulder. As she turned with fury, she saw a young athletic man, smiling at him, revealing a perfect set of teeth. The man exuded an air of understated sophistication as he stood tall, clothed in a simple yet impeccably tailored black tuxedo. The luxurious fabric, likely a high-end wool or cashmere blend, hugged his athletic physique perfectly, complementing his broad shoulders. A pair of polished black oxfords, crafted from the finest Italian leather, completed his outfit, their subtle brogue detailing a testament to the wearer’s discerning taste. Despite the simplicity of his attire, it couldn’t hide the scent of wealth and luxury that shone from his outlook.

Despite his polished and refined attire, the man’s attempt to disguise himself was evident, particularly around his face. His eyes, were hidden behind a pair of stylish yet slightly oversized glasses, his attempt to disguise himself quite evident.

“Yes?”, she snapped, looking at him. In a bid of hesitation, he smiled and said, “Are you an egg? Because you’re egg-cellent..and also because l love eggs, l guess”. Valerie couldn’t believe her ears. That was the dumbest thing she had ever heard. Whatever he meant! In this moment, she just had to say whatever that got this creep out of her way.

As she reached the end of the hallway, she peeped through the window and quickly ducked. She walked to the door and glued her ears onto the wooden door . She could hear her workmates gossiping about her; that she was rude and inconsiderate, but you could gossip about anyone else and not Valerie. You would not live to tell the story. She banged the door open, angrily.

“ How could you ladies insult me like that? I’m just so disappointed. I thought l was worse than just inconsiderate. You didn’t even mention some of my awful and despicable qualities?”, she said smiling. They could tell her smile was a calculated façade, hiding the seething resentment beneath. The gossipers froze. In this moment of terror, no one uttered a word.

“It’s time to play girls. And l always win”, she suggested, in dark humour. She dropped the caramel coloured purse she was holding to the floor and quickly loosened her tie. She walked towards the girls. They were in for it! She slapped the first girl before she could run, kicked the second, gave a strong fist to the third, straight on the nose and she wailed in fierce pain. In a few seconds a vigorous fight had broken out. People rushed from all directions to witness the altercation as the dramatic scene unfolded before them, their faces engraved with shock and disgust. The girls made such a hullabaloo, the manager came out of his office in full speed. He had to gather up all of his energy to hold Valerie up, rescuing the other girls who had bleeding noses and scratches all over them. He took Valerie out of the room. He could swear she was possessed.

That same morning, Chris Malvins could not concentrate at work after experiencing the most embarrassing moment of his entire life. That same morning as he was going to work, he couldn’t help but notice this beautiful girl in a white shirt , black tie and black skirt, complemented by a gorgeous caramel coloured handbag. She appeared to be in her mid twenties. He was completely mesmerized by the ravishing woman he had seen. He had to recklessly stop the car in the middle of the road, bringing the traffic to a halt.

Chris stepped out of his Bugatti Chiron, he made sure he made a perfect disguise of himself. He followed her to the door of the building she was going into. Unfortunately, he had received the coldest reaction ever. He could still hear her voice echoing in his ears as she shouted, “I’m not looking for a stalker, so get lost you creep”, drawing everyone’s attention and all eyes on him; some looking at him with pity, some laughing their lungs out. How embarrassing!

As he snapped back again into reality, pacing back to his car, the other driver insulted him, “ Maybe you should stick to riding a bike!”.

Chris felt humiliated to death, he literally felt like crawling under a rock. He wondered what went wrong, he had practised his pick up line perfectly, “Are you an egg? Because you’re egg-cellent…and also because l love eggs, l guess”. Couldn’t she just have rejected him quietly, after all her looks and personality were two things, totally different. More like her looks and personality were fire and rain. Judging from her outlook, he had assumed he knew what she would be like, but now he got a little wiser, truly understanding what ‘you never know until they talk’ truly meant.

After talking to her, he thought she was a girl with the most terrible attitude he had ever seen. He was Chris Malvins, the most eligible bachelor in the city, women vied just for a piece of him and there she was, snapping at him. He vowed that he would one day ‘help her understand her mistake’ . Chris was a man of pride, the kind that would never beg nor forgive, so to him it was just a matter of time, they would meet again on a fateful day.

“Aye , Valerie , gannin or ah’ll hae ti call security pet…”the manager fumed.

Valerie could not understand a word he said. “ Oh, great. Another person who thinks l can magically understand their accent”, she alleged angrily.

“I said, get going or l will call the boys in blue!”, he yelled.

“I apologize, sir…”, she said absently then muttered something under her breath. “ Not that it’s entirely my fault but…”

“Which part of ‘you are fired’ don’t you understand, yet? Please exit the premise”, he said firmly, pretending to get busy so she could leave already. He felt annoyed with each second passing.

“Everyone deserves a second chance, you know. This is not fair at all”, she answered.

“Well, life is never fair sweetie, get used to it, besides you can not be asking for a second chance. You already had a second chance, third, fourth and many more chances, but screwed them all”, he fumed.

“But ….”,she tried saying something.

“But nothing Valerie, no…just use the door”, he complained. There was a brief pause and then he heard…

“With great pleasure, I, Valerie, hereby declare my independence from this miserable, stinking gossip factory!”, she vowed and raised her right hand, “I swear to never again subject myself to such toxicity. Oh, joy! I get to leave this ‘wonderful, uplifting environment’ , said no one ever,” she said sarcastically rolling her eyes as she pointed at the door and shouted I’m gone!”.

As she walked out, Valerie ripped off her ID badge and flung it to the ground, and threw a vile mucous- like glob of thick saliva on the floor, as if symbolizing her break from the company.

“What a truly stomach- churning sight indeed”, the manager wondered to himself, but could not speak another word . No one really showed it, but everyone’s heart at the workplace was singing ‘Free at last’ with joy, some air would finally be flowing. To them, her absence would make a whole lot of difference, her absence meant a breath of fresh air.

Valerie’s life took a drastic turn since she lost her job, she had downsized to a way smaller apartment since she lost her job. She had made many adjustments. She had been hoping to get another job in at least five months, that would have suited her budget until she got another job. Unfortunately for her, it happened otherwise and no job came by. She had sold off most of her clothes, her couch, her cupboard, wardrobe and electronics . Infact, she had sold literally almost everything she owned and now she did not really have anything else to sell off to buy food and pay for her apartment.

A ray of hope shone when she was called for an interview at Nexus Global Company and she hoped for the best, hoping they would take her in and save her from starving, and not trace her up to her terrible fight records. In the last hours of the day before her interview, she turned her wardrobe upside down looking for the best outfit to wear from the few clothes she had not sold off. She finally settled for a midnight- blue dress with a black coat and black heels. She definitely had to make an impression, a good one this time. This was her chance to shine again. It was not that Valerie could not do a job well, just her terrible attitude made it difficult to keep a job for more than six months. Or even less.

Valerie stood nervously outside the company's glass doors, smoothing her dress and taking a deep breath. She had spent hours rehearsing her responses to common interview questions. With a confident smile, she pushed open the door and stepped into the bustling lobby. As she approached the reception desk, a friendly face greeted her. "Hi, you must be Valerie. I'm Karen, the HR manager. Please, follow me”.Valerie trailed behind Karen, and finally, she landed behind a long que. Despite her anxiety, when her turn came, she entered the conference room confidently, where two interviewers were seated. The conversation flew smoothly, with Valerie answering questions about her skills and experience. After the interview, Karen escorted Valerie to the CEO's office. “The CEO has requested to see you in his office now," she said, opening the door. Although Valerie couldn’t figure out the reason for this request, she felt quite uneasy.Valerie's eyes widened as she stepped inside the CEOs office. T

Chris observed Valerie speculatively as she loaded her time worn belongings in his open truck, ready to take off to his house. He almost thought he was dreaming, completely swimming in disbelief of what he was doing. Chris felt that Valerie was too naive for a twenty five year old woman. The ride to his mansion was long and boring. There was dead silence in the car, until Valerie broke the silence.“This is going to be the worst decision l have ever made!”,Chris deliberately ignored her comment focusing on his driving.“Well if you must know, l am already planning my escape route. I have another job interview in a week”.“How about you focus on your new job as a housekeeper?”, he responded coldly.“Someone has got their grumpy pants today!”, she snapped. In disbelief of what she had just said, Chris took a glance at her. “ What makes you think you can get away with talking to me like that, you are not intimidated by me at all, are you?”, he asked, intrigued by curiosity.“I’m more in

An hour and half later , the food was ready. Valerie set the table for the two and called them. The two men ate quietly, until Richey broke the silence and said, “Chris you seem to be enjoying the food.”Chris suddenly choked and coughed, he took a few sips of water and cleared his throat.“What?”.“I said you seem to be enjoying the food. Did you just say she is a bad cook? Because l would swear that this is one of the best meals l have had in a very long time.”Chris did not answer, the food was undeniably delicious, he felt embarrassed by how Valerie had made such a delicious meal after he had demeaned her as a bad cook. After they were done, Valerie came to clear up the table.“Thank you very much and you are a great cook”, Richey said as he smiled at her.“Thank you, l am glad you appreciated my meal. Some people are just so hard to please” ,she answered as she looked at Chris with the corner of her eye. She could see how he was creasing his face, his eyes rolling from her to Ric

A wave of relief swept through her face as she realized she had to finally brush off the thought of being charged with involuntary man slaughter. Phew,he was fine!“So he regained his consciousness! A year prior, Chris had been diagonised with diabetes type 2. Upon commencing medication he had endured several side effects for almost over a month. He suffered from headaches, fatigue, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. During those days, he was barely at work at all, all alone in his lonely mansion, no one taking care of him. He not only felt wounded physically but emotionally as well. He felt abandoned and uncared for. He had not shared the news with anyone, even his twin brother Chase. Fortunately as his body adjusted he felt better and eventually he was well again. On the current day, he had collapsed even though he was not quite sure why. On the same day he was discharged, Valerie drove him back home. Brushing off the moments of the day, he felt quite relieved Valerie was there with him. For the first time since his parent's demise, someone was taking care of him. Being drove home by Valerie felt different from being drove by his chauffer. It felt soothing to his senses. Suddenly

Tasha felt her insecurity leveling up. The thought of her fiancé being alone in his space with another woman made her bite her nails. Her idea of Valerie wasn't she being Chris' helper, but rather she was just a woman. An incredibly beautiful woman. The worst part of it all was that, upon her arrival, it felt like Chris was not at all intrigues by her presence, but was rather enjoying Valerie's company more. Regardless of their relationship being more of an alliance, and despite that they had agreed to an open relationship, the reflection of Chris pursuing Valerie vexed her. Yes, she may not have been in love with Chris, but she was confident that someone like Valerie was undeserving of Chris, moreover of taking her place in his life. The entire night at Chris' house had been a nightmare. Normally, he would be all over her, his eyes aflame with desire, however this time she had taken a bath, and radiated a sweet aroma on her voluptuous body. Presenting her furnished body covered in

“So what exactly is your intention here?”, Tasha asked in a low ruspy growl as she moved towards Valerie. Startled, Valerie's grip on the knife loosened and it cluttered on the counter.“Good morning, Tasha. God! "Are you going to pretend you did not hear my question?”, Tasha asked, her temper rising. “No, of course not…well my intention right now…is to make a sandwich for my breakfast", she replied. "And of course, my long term intentions are cooking, washing, cleaning”, she answered, her eyes sparkling with amusement. She continued working on her breakfast preparation. Tasha rolled her eyes. “Well, I don’t believe that. Just then, Chris swiftly changed the subject. “So just be strong friend. Time is like a river. Chris quietly walked around the room, watching Valerie sleep. Without warning, his phone made a loud ringing, disturbing Valerie from her peaceful sleep. It was a call from work and he just had to take the call. After hanging up, he apologized to her.“I’m sorry l woke you up”, he said, sincerely.“Not a problem”, she said assumingly as she yawned and stretched. Valerie felt herself loosening up to Chris’ presence because frankly, he was all she had during this turmoil.“How about you take a shower?”, he ordered. Valerie kept gazing at him, and didn’t say a word.“I was thinking maybe we could order some food, afterwards”, he suggested. She comprehended what he was trying to do.“Chris, l am fine, you really don’t have to…”, she stated.“ I wasn’t asking, it was a command. • Sassy Orphan and The Twin CEOs    Hush now, sweet soul.

Chris stood still, frozen. His phone right in his hand. He didn’t know where to start. He wasn’t at all worried about his twin brother being teased mercilessly on the media for cheating on Valerie. He wasn’t pleased too by the masses claiming he was more organised and trustworthy compared to Chase. His only worry was on poor Valerie, how she was coping , how she was taking the betrayal. The previous day, Chris had felt her dilemma. He couldn’t see through her though, he couldn’t fathom why she kept on giving Chase so much power over her. Right from the moment she had caught Chase having sex with Dora red handed, she should have given him a piece of her mind, shown him what she is made of, sued him even. However, Chase had taken her love for him as a sign of desperation and weakness. He wondered how Chase had been blind to see what an incredible woman he had. Her immense love for Chase was visible in her eyes, and Chris knew it was pure and true. Still, all that worried him was Valerie

Chase woke up to the violent buzz of his cell phone. He stretched his hand to grab the phone but before he could get a hold of it , he noticed something quite usual and off. He closed his eyes and opened again, then now he felt more awake and ready to start the day. Just then, his ears heard a sound. A faint sound, yet undeniably the sound of an angry mob. Just as he started to see a clearer picture of what was happening, he hurried out of his bed and shifted his gaze to the window. His eyes instantly grew larger. Was that an egg that had just landed on his crystal clear glass window? Pacing to the window, he got the shock of his life. His security men were trying to ward off an angry mob off his yard. It was quite visible how the security men were struggling, almost being overpowered. One spotted him standing by his window, clueless and instantly raised a finger and posted straight to him, shouting, “ Cheater! Cheater!”.At once, the visibly angry mob shifted focus to him , and let o

In his vintage, uptown mansion, Chris had been snapping his fingers nervously, his gaze fixed on the blank wall. His mansion was visibly secluded from the rest of the elite neighbourhood. One could describe the mansion as basically lone, and quiet in a bothersome way. Nevertheless to Chris, it was the most refreshing place he could ever be, after that long tiring day of work in the city. He could not shake off the feeling that something would inevitably unfold because of Dora’s sudden arrival. He was greatly concerned about Valerie now more that ever, hoping Chase wouldn’t hurt her as he had predicted before. Dora’s sudden appearance in the city only , he perceived was worrisome and only meant one thing. Trouble. Now only three days to Valerie and Chase’s wedding. Even though he had lost the woman he wished he had to his twin brother, he still cared for her, and hoped nothing bad would come her way. Right at midnight, as the mansion was filled with dead silence, Valerie suddenly woke up from her slumber. She recalled the incident that had unfolded earlier and tears trickled at the corner of her eyes. She had cried herself to sleep and now, she vowed she wasn’t going to start again.Still drowsy, she stretched her hand towards Chase. Still feeling her hand against the sheets, she knew Chase wasn’t there with her. Hours before during diner, an intense argument had erupted between them, but to her surprize, Chase had seemed not bothered at all. Perhaps, he had seen her asleep and thought they’d talk in the morning.Valerie felt her anger was justified. Chase had been excessively rude to her, he had to be the one to apologize. Valerie couldn’t help but feel something was off and…wrong . Why was her husband to be acting so strangely only five days before their wedding? “Had she done something wrong?”, she kept thinking to herself. One thing was clear. By then, it was almost two in the afternoon and he hadn’t even bothered to text. She kept on praying that God keep him safe wherever he was.As she was about to throw her body on the couch, the telephone rang. A private number was calling.“Hello”, she answered, her voice filled with irritation.“Val, how are you?”, a voice responded. Immediately, Valerie knew who it was and her mind geared into an adversarial mode.“You! What is it?”, she yelled. “What do you want from me now?”,“Whoa! Valerie could barely recognise herself anymore as she gazed into the mirror. Her reflection revealed a stranger. Her hair once black and straight, now blonde and curly, cascading down her back in bouncy waves. Her make up too had become bold and flawless. Her nails impeccably manicured. Once she favoured simple, comfortable clothing but now, she would wear designer clothes and sleek dresses. “Just one last show”, Chase would always promise, but there was always another. In the haste of the wedding preparations, Valerie had intentionally erased Chris out of her mind. She had chosen to forget him, but she felt he wasn’t the only part of her life she had swept under the rug. She had forgotten how it felt like to be herself, she had missed the simplicity of life, like just walking on the sidewalk, or strolling in the park without the paparazzi running after you. Now, she felt as if she was slowly loosing herself in the process of being a billionaire’s fiancée.Her life was now plagued by
