CHAPTER TWO

Emily woke up. Glancing around. Her gaze rested on a metal IV stand with saline bags, and a woman in white trying to connect it to her arm.

“Where am I?” Emily frowned.

“Oh good, you are awake.” the woman smiled at Emily.

“. leave us," a dark masculine voice said .

Emily turned towards the voice. He had a hard and handsome face. The nurse turned to leave, but Emily instinctively held the lady's hand.

“Don’t worry, you are in good hands,” the lady encouraged her. as she pried her hands from Emily and stepped out.

Emily’s face turned white. She tried sitting up and felt pain shooting up her stomach.

“Relax, if I wanted to do something vile. I would have done it the night I saved you. But I guess you don’t remember.”

“Are you the one that helped me?” Emily said in a shaky voice.

He looked at her intently before he answered. “You are lucky I stopped the car. Because I actually thought it was a ploy to rob me. People hardly venture that road at night.”

She nodded her head and looked away. “I guess I should say thank you. "

“Do you know the perpetrator?” he asked.

“Someone I trusted with my life.” She scoffed.

“Then you have to do better with who you trust.” He replied.

She glared at him.

“Do you want to report to the police?”

“No, I will only be cutting the tail of the snake.” Emily said.

He nodded in agreement.

“To whom do I owe my gratitude to?” Emily said.

He stood up. Stretching out his hand."Logan… Logan Miller.”

“I am Emily, by the way.” Emily said, taking the hand Logan offered.

“I know. I took the liberty to investigate you. "

“What!”

“I wanted to know who I rescued. Plus, there was no ID on you.”

“So I take it, you know my family.”

“Yes. Thanks to your stint with the police for driving under the influence. It was easy.” Logan placed his hands in his pocket.

“I didn’t do it, but no one would believe me. It was my sister…”

She wondered why she was trying to convince this stranger as if he cared.

“Its start with taking responsibility,”

“You don't believe me either. No ever does.” she laughed bitterly, shaking her head.

“The evidence is there,” Logan shrugged.

“For you to have the resources to investigate, you are no ordinary person. Are you, by chance, related to the owner of Miller’s airline?”

“Miller is a common surname,” he said

What a clever way to dodge the question, but he was right. It's common, she thought.

“What do you want? I know you didn’t go to this length just because you are a good samaritan. I learnt the hard way.”

“I have a proposition for you. I want your shares in the Henderson hotel.”

“But I don’t have any shares.”

“Not yet but you will when you get married according to what was stipulated in your grandfather's will.”

“I can see someone has done his homework…. Wait, are you asking me to marry you? "

“What if I am?” Logan replied

“Then I will have you know there is another clause of me turning thirty, which is three years from now,”

“What if I can help you come into it sooner?”

“You mean to go this far. Just to get your hand on some shares,” Emily looked at him, dumbfounded.

“why not?” Logan asked.

“I am sure my family would reward you richly for your kindness. But as far as that, I can’t help you.”

“You have been out of it for days. What makes you think that your family, who hasn’t reported you missing for days, would reward me richly?” Logan said through clenched teeth.

“How many days exactly?” Emily asked, massaging her temple.

“For three days now,”

“You mean no one asked for me?” Emily asked in a disbelieving voice.

“What do you think?” he said, staring at her.

she didn’t know who to trust at this point. She stood up and ripped the drip out of her hand. She didn’t care that she was in pain.

“Whoa! be careful.” He said, trying to stop her.

“I am getting out of here. And you can’t stop me,” Emily screamed.

“Okay, let’s get the nurse and we can go.” he waited for her to nod in agreement before he left the room.

Logan stops her in front of the apartment complex she pointed at. When she attempted to step out of the car, he stopped her.

“Here, have my card.” He said.

“why? I won’t need it.”

“Just in case you change your mind,” Logan insisted

Emily looked at it for a while before snatching it from his hand and stepped out.

“And call me if you need help.” Logan yelled out the window.

She rolled her eyes and walked straight into the building.

“Why are you obsessed with getting your hands on the Henderson hotel shares?” she mused as she studied the business card he gave her. “Hmm… CEO of a tech company.”

The elevator door opened at the floor her boyfriend's apartment was in. She tucked it into the pocket of her jeans.

“I guess I need to thank him for the outfit.” She muttered as she punched in the code.

She knew Ryan would be mad at her because she came to his apartment unannounced. But this was the only place she felt safe for now until she could figure out which one of her family wanted her dead. A strange noise coming from the bedroom caught her attention.

“Ryan?” Emily called out, walking tentatively toward the bedroom door.

She pushed the door slightly. She froze, shaking her head in denial. The noises she heard became obvious. It was a man and a woman in the tryst of passion. The man being her boyfriend, Ryan.
