Anika's P.O.V

Heartbroken, devastated, and filled with despair, I leaned against my locked bedroom door, refusing to open it for the betrayer on the other side who continued to beg for forgiveness.

Eventually, silence filled the air as Richard ceased his pleas and retreated, driving off into the distance.

I knew it was Richard's car, and I felt a sense of relief. I had no intention of ever seeing that scoundrel again.

After everything I had done for him, I couldn't believe he would betray me in such a way.

"Why did he do this to me? Was I not enough?" I thought bitterly, tears still streaming down my face.

Throughout the night, I sobbed relentlessly, my eyes undoubtedly red and swollen. I cried until darkness enveloped the room, unable to release the pain coursing through me.

It wasn't my fault that I was born into privilege; all I longed for was genuine love and care.

I wanted someone who would hold me close, whispering "I love you" each night with sincerity, someone who could bring me solace during moments of anger, showering me with the affection and adoration I deserved. But it seemed as though such a person didn't exist in my life, as all the boys I had dated had turned out to be nothing more than greedy and selfish people.

As the night wore on and my mind wandered through memories of the past, exhaustion finally overcame me. I noticed my eyes aching, the tears no longer able to flow.

With unsteady legs, I rose from the floor, swaying back and forth. Sniffing back the threat of more tears, I made my way toward the bed, seeking solace in sleep's embrace. Closing my eyes, I surrendered to the goddess of slumber.

***

The sound of my alarm clock jarred me from my thoughts, filling me with irritation. I switched it off and tossed it randomly, not caring where it ended up.

Yawning, I rubbed my face and groaned, feeling the remnants of a headache lingering behind my closed eyes.

With a sigh, I finally opened my eyes, the pain subsiding slightly. I sat up and begrudgingly acknowledged the start of a new day, cursing the morning for its early arrival.

I stretched my tired limbs, preparing myself for the tasks ahead, and stood up to go wash up but I caught sight of the destroyed alarm and I sighed, I shouldn't have destroyed it after all.

I had set the alarm for 6:00 am for work, a decision made to distract myself from the turmoil caused by Richard.

Taking over my father's business seemed like a logical step for me, providing me with a focus to move forward and heal.

The decision I hurriedly made last night surprised me as I had always despised office work and instead spent my time partying and indulging in a carefree lifestyle. However, my parents' untimely death had acted as a wake-up call, urging me to let go of the unbeneficial habits Richard had influenced.

Staring at my reflection, I couldn't help but be taken aback by the disheveled mess that stared back at me.

My eyes were bloodshot, my hair unruly, and my once-perfect makeup was long ruined by hours of crying. I resembled an eerie figure, far from my usual self.

Realizing I was running late, a muttered curse escaped my lips. I hurriedly opened my wardrobe and laid out a neat white shirt and black trousers, then selected an expensive bag.

A wave of nostalgia washed over me as I remembered my mom giving me these bags. She had always loved fashion and treated buying accessories as an art form. I couldn't help but smile at the memory then said a silent prayer for her, hoping her soul was at peace.

Crouching down, I chose a pair of black heels and placed them beside my clothes. Grabbing my yellow fluffy towel, I made my way to the bathroom, hanging it on a pole behind the bathtub.

As I stepped into the warm shower. The water cascaded over my body, washing away the remnants of yesterday's tears. I let the hot water soothe my aching muscles, allowing myself a moment to just breathe and reflect. I felt a brief relaxation from the chaos in my mind.

Once I finished preparing myself for the day, I took a moment to gather my thoughts. Today marked the start of a new chapter, an opportunity for growth and healing.

With revived determination, I stepped out of the bathroom, ready to face the challenges that awaited me. Today was the day I was going to take control of my life and I was ready for it.

I got dressed and sat down in front of my vanity mirror and began fixing my makeup. I caked on some concealer to hide the dark circles under my eyes, hoping it would make me look more presentable then brushed through my tangled hair and tied it up into a neat ponytail.

Finally satisfied with my appearance, I slipped into my black heels and grabbed my bag.

As I reached for my bag, I felt a buzz emanating from inside it. Curious, I retrieved my phone and discovered a plethora of messages from Richard.

There were about fifty messages and more than thirty missed calls from him. I wondered how I had somehow managed to sleep through all the notifications and buzzing.

I scrolled through the messages, and my heart sank as I read Richard's attempts to apologize and justify his actions. He was trying to gaslight and manipulate the situation like he always does as if I were oblivious to what I had witnessed - him and my so-called "friend" making out.

Taking a deep breath, I pushed the hurt and anger aside, striving to keep my emotions in check. I didn't want to think about him while starting a new job.

My eyes moved to my wristwatch and I gasped when I saw the time displayed on its face. I was dangerously close to being late for work.

"Omg! I'm almost late for work," I exclaimed and rushed downstairs.

With a calmer mind, I made my way downstairs toward the kitchen, my stomach rumbling with hunger.

It had been hours since I last ate, and the thought of a delicious breakfast made my mouth water.

I muttered, "Yummy..." as I got lost in the tantalizing aroma of bacon and eggs, one of my favorite breakfast foods.

"You're finally awake," a familiar voice said, interrupting my food-filled daydream. I instantly recognized it as my Nana's voice.

She had been a pillar of support for me since my parents' tragic demise, taking care of me selflessly. Sometimes, I felt like I didn't miss my mother as much because Nana had filled that void in my life. I loved her dearly.

"Good morning, Nana," I greeted her warmly, showering her with a hug and a peck on the cheek.

"Morning, love," Nana replied, her voice filled with love and warmth. She began dishing out the breakfast onto a plate while I took a seat at the table.

"Mm... Bacon and eggs are my favorite morning food," I mumbled, my mouth watering at the sight of the delicious breakfast.

"That's why I made them today, especially for you," Nana said, her eyes twinkling with love and care.

"Thanks," I replied gratefully, accepting the plate of bacon and eggs she handed me. She then poured some orange juice into a cup before joining me at the table.

"Mm..." I moaned appreciatively as I took a bite of the crispy bacon, immediately savoring its flavor. The eggs were perfectly cooked, adding to the delicious taste.

"That reminds me, I saw Richard yesterday. He was apologizing to you," Nana mentioned casually, her curiosity getting the better of her.

"Did you and your lovebirds have another fight?"

I almost choked on my food upon hearing her words. The mention of Richard brought back a flood of emotions, and my appetite disappeared in an instant.

"We are no longer together. I realized he was just like everyone else, using me for my money," I responded, my voice filled with a mix of sadness and frustration. I fought back the tears threatening to escape my eyes.

Nana gasped, her eyes filled with concern and empathy. "Oh, my dear Anika, it's not your fault. You're not cursed. You were born into a good family for a reason," she comforted me, her voice gentle.

"I thought Richard was a good person, a nice guy, but I was wrong," I sighed, wiping away a stray tear that escaped. It hurts to admit my vulnerability.

"Men can be jerks," Nana proclaimed, trying to lighten the mood, and it worked. I let out a soft laugh, finding solace in her words.

"Let's forget about him," I declared, making the conscious decision to leave Richard behind and focus on the present instead.

I picked up my fork and resumed eating, determined to appease the grumbling hunger within me.

"Don't worry, Anika. You'll find your prince charming one day," Nana reassured me, her voice oozing with optimism and hope.

"I doubt it," I muttered, downing the rest of my orange juice, trying to swallow the bitter taste of past heartbreak.

Changing the subject, I eagerly asked Nana, "Guess what?"

She teasingly replied, "You've got yourself a new boyfriend."

"Nana!" I whined, rolling my eyes playfully at her comment.

"Sorry, love. I'm awful at guessing," she chuckled, her eyes twinkling mischievously.

"I've decided to work at Dad's company," I gleefully announced, a sense of pride washing over me.

"He would be so proud of you," Nana beamed, her smile radiant with joy.

"I know," I grinned, feeling a surge of happiness at the thought of making my father proud.

Glancing at my watch, panic seized me. "What? I'm late for work! I only have seventeen minutes left. Bye!" I exclaimed, grabbing my bag and rushing toward the door.

"But Anika, you haven't finished your food," Nana called out, her voice filled with concern.

"I'm late," I shouted back but in a moment of impulse, I turned back, hurriedly returned to the dining room, devoured the remaining bacon, and rushed out after I was done.

As I stepped outside, the fresh morning air greeted me, filling my lungs with a sense of freedom. I got into my car, ready to tackle the challenges that lay ahead.

My heart may still be broken, but I knew that with time, it would heal and in the meantime, I was going to focus on building a life full of love, success, and happiness.

Anika's P.O.V I parked my car in the company's parking lot behind the building. It took me quite a while to find it. Thankfully, I had the address and the internet maps helped a lot. I chose to work at this branch because it was conveniently located near my house; only an hour's drive. Plus, it was my dad's favorite company, as it was the first company he built. As I stepped out of my car, I couldn't help but admire the changes the company had undergone. It had become even more beautiful than it was before. The last time I visited was when I was in 9th grade and my dad insisted on taking me out of school for the day to teach me about 'handling a business'. I was so angry at him that day because I had never been fond of work, especially since I was an only child. Looking up at the big sign with the words "ADOWNS OIL AND GAS" inscribed on it, I couldn't help but chuckle at the name. It seemed a bit lame and made no sense. My parents could be a little crazy when it came to me, espec

Kelvin's P.O.V I was awoken from my deep sleep by a familiar voice, my mom's. I groaned, still half-asleep, and slowly opened my eyes. "Ooh...leave me be, Mom. I'm tired and in need of some more rest," I mumbled, yawning with my eyes half-opened. Regrettably, those words earned me a hard slap on the back, causing me to yelp in pain. "Oww...Mom, why did you do that? I was just about to get up," I protested, standing up and stretching my body. "Do you realize you have a job interview today? So why aren't you up yet?" my mom inquired, clearly not pleased with my laziness. Suddenly, the mention of a job interview jolted my memory. "Oh, yes! I have one today," I exclaimed, immediately taking off my sleepwear. "Mom, you should have woken me up earlier," I complained. "I really should have, but you're such a heavy sleeper. Your interview is at 8 am, and it's almost that. Now, go and take your bath before you're late," she said, pushing me toward the bathroom. A bit startled by her ur

Kelvin's P.O.V A man was called into the interviewing office ahead of me, and after about five minutes, he came out with tears in his eyes. I then knew that he didn't get the job, and I could only imagine how tough the interviewer must have been. I felt a sense of fear creep over me as I thought about what I was about to face. The next person was called in, and as he walked out, he had a disappointed look on his face and it was clear that he hadn't been successful either. I felt a surge of pity for everyone who got denied, the interviewer must have had extremely high standards and I needed to be ready for them all or I would have a bad look like them. Needing a moment alone, I excused myself to go to the restroom. After asking for the restroom, I walked toward it and it was surprisingly huge, almost the size of my room. It provided a serene atmosphere, a welcome relief from the tension building up inside me. I approached one of the stalls and took a moment to relieve myself. Af

Kelvin's P.O.V I arrived at the location indicated by the lady and knocked on the door. "Come in," I heard a deep, muscular voice. It was obvious that it belonged to a man; his voice was immense and powerful. Upon entering, as I had expected, I found a young man seated at his desk in the office, spinning around in a swivel chair. He warmly welcomed me and proceeded to show me to my office, providing me with detailed instructions regarding the do's and don'ts of the company. He also explained my position and responsibilities moving forward. I was informed that I would be sharing the office with someone else. I couldn't help but wonder who it would be. I hoped it wouldn't be someone strange or unpredictable. Nonetheless, I felt immensely happy and excited, knowing that I had finally secured a real job. Gone were the days of idling at home, feeling aimless, or dealing with the frustration of job hunting. It was undeniably the happiest day of my life so far. With a heart filled with

Kelvin's P.O.V Using my spare key, I unlocked the door and stepped inside my house, knowing full well that Mom was still at work. Closing the door behind me, I headed straight to my room. My bags found their place in a drawer, and I neatly arranged my shoes where they belonged after taking them off. Unlike the typical messy stereotype, my room was impeccably organized. I was different from most guys, not a fan of untidiness. Disorder always got under my skin with everything I saw. I was a neat freak. Shrugging off my office attire, I tossed them into the laundry basket for the dirty clothes. Opting for comfort, I changed into a black T-shirt and blue jeans. Although I initially considered microwaving leftover pasta from the freezer, I changed my mind and chose to order pizza instead. My phone emerged from my jeans pocket, and I swiftly ordered a pepperoni pizza from a nearby restaurant. Grabbing an orange juice from the fridge, I poured it into a glass, taking a sip to curb m

  • STONE HEARTED   CHAPTER EIGHT

Anika's P.O.V I awoke and let out a yawn. I was expecting my alarm to rouse me, but it stayed silent. It suddenly dawned on me that I had broken it, though Nana should have replaced it already. A groan escaped as the memory of the dream I had resurfaced. It would have been interesting to know the taste of his lips or whether he was a good kisser or not since I couldn't do that in real life but Laura had to ruin it all by yelling my name. She had quite a talent for ruining dreams. What even triggered such a silly dream in the first place? I should put an end to the absurd thoughts I was having and find a way to make amends with her. Maybe I'd visit her at her workplace, the only spot where we can talk. I got out of my generously sized bed and stretched my body. As my gaze swept the room, it landed on a photograph of Richard and me encased in a frame on the wall. Why hadn't I noticed it there all this time? I lifted the frame, took out the picture of us, and tore it before disposi

Kelvin's P.O.V "Hello, handsome," the lady who flirted with me and made me feel uncomfortable said. "Hmm... hi," I answered plainly, trying to distance myself from her advances. "I asked for your number yesterday; you promised you would get back to me, but you didn't," she pouted, feigning disappointment. "I forgot," I lied, hoping to put an end to the conversation. I settled down on my new office chair, deliberately positioning myself a bit farther from her. "So, you're the person I would be sharing this office with?" I inquired, attempting to change the subject. "Yeah, we would be great together, right?" she asked, a hint of seduction in her voice. "Hmm, I guess," I replied nonchalantly, not interested in entertaining her flirting. "I'm Stephen," she introduced herself, offering her hand for a handshake. "Well, I'm Kelvin," I responded, politely shaking her hand. "Nice name," she complimented, still holding onto my hand a bit longer than necessary. "What do you think of t

Kelvin's P.O.V I had a wonderful time with Stephen; she was quite humorous and pleasant. However, she occasionally engaged in flirtatious behavior. Nonetheless, she was a cool and intelligent person. I had the opportunity to meet all of the staff members, and they were all enthusiastic about my presence, welcoming me warmly, especially the women. Why must I possess such handsome looks? I wasn't complaining though, I love my looks ;) During lunch, Stephen and I dined together, and I shared details about my life, including my past relationship and its breakup. She chuckled and mentioned that my ex-girlfriend was foolish to let go of someone as charming as me and I couldn't agree with him less. Following our meal, both of us remained busy. Stephen needed to work on some files, while I was occupied with transferring documents between offices. "Goodnight, Kelly. See you on Monday," Stephen remarked as our workday came to an end, placing a kiss on my cheek. It was a bit unusual, but

The restaurant had grown larger, more spacious, and more beautiful than I remembered, but the name and location helped me recognize it. It struck me as somewhat strange that Kelvin had chosen this particular spot. We had been on numerous dates over the past three months, yet he had never brought me here before. I couldn't help but wonder why he had chosen it for this occasion. Upon entering, I greeted the waitress with a simple "Birtch." She nodded and guided me to the same table where Kelvin and I had shared our first date. This place now held special memories for me, and I will cherish them forever. Our table was positioned in the middle of the restaurant, offering a lovely view of the city's night sky and the glowing street lights outside. As I approached the table, Kelvin stood up to

He patiently waited for me, for nearly six years, hoping that I would eventually return his love. He did everything within his power to make me happy. He became my source of solace during my darkest hours. He risked his life for mine, shielding me from Richard's threat. He detested seeing me in tears and always went above and beyond to bring a smile to my face. I was blinded by my fear of love, unable to recognize that Kelvin's love for me was unwavering. I used to think all men were unfaithful, given the pain my exes had caused me. But everything changed when I met Kelvin. Cherry had finally returned to her country, clearing up the rumors about her and Kelvin, stating that they were just friends and business partners with nothing more, emphasizing that they wouldn't become a couple since there was someone else in both of their lives. It had caused quite a stir among their fans, and I knew this because I had been stalking her on social media, as well as Kelvin. Since our encounter at the event, I hadn't seen or spoken to Kelvin. I sighed as I glanced at the calendar on my phone. Today was the day he had given me to decide what he meant to me, or else he would leave. The truth was, I didn't know the answer. Ever since that event, I hadn't been myself, and we hadn't exchanged a word. It was tearing me apart. So, what on earth did Jordan see in Cherry, or whatever her name was? "Wow, you look stunning. Can I take your picture and post it on my I*******m?" a makeup artist asked, and I nodded. It was Kelvin, his arms wrapped around some woman as they exited a hotel. He looked genuinely happy around her, even smiling at the camera. The woman was undeniably attractive, but in that moment, all I wanted was to see her radiant smile turn to sadness because she was clinging to Kelvin's arm like he was her boyfriend. My fury intensified when I read the headline: "Did the town's most handsome and eligible bachelor have a one-night stand with last year's Miss Beauty and a Victoria's Secret model?" accompanied by two wide-eyed emojis. I was surprised that I kissed him back. It was as if I was already used to him. During that kiss, I felt a spark inside me, and my heart raced so fast, it felt like it might explode. I was so confused about my feelings, and it was incredibly frustrating. He was leaving the next day, and I might never see him again.
