It's a Big Day

“Ava!” Bella shouted, adding, “Snap out of it and get to your son.”

Ava shook her head, her thumping heart overshadowing every other sound in the airplane. Then her eye, which had suddenly become blurry, cleared up as she saw those who were gathered around her child.

“Such a poor boy,” one of the passengers on the other line murmured as they watched what was going on.

Ava unbuckled her belt with clumsy hands as she fell to the ground beside Jordan.

“Jordan, can you hear me, baby?” Ava said as she lifted him to her lap.

“What is wrong with Jordan?” Jenna asked, her little voice trembling and filled with fear.

“Jordan is going to be fine, sweetheart,” Bella said, pulling Jenna away before asking one of the air hostesses, “Do we have a doctor on board?”

“Someone is making that announcement now,” the air hostess replied.

Just then, someone walked up to them and said, “Everybody move back; let me take a look at the boy; I’m a doctor.”

The doctor looked at Ava and said, “Hello, I’m a doctor; I am going to take a look at him first, okay?”

Ava nodded, her eyes clear now. Over the years, she had learned to become strong for her children despite the situation.

“Get me the first aid box,” he said to an air hostess and then added, “I’m going to need every other person to please step back.”

The doctor placed a hand on the boy's wrist to check for a pulse, then pulled out a penlight to check his eyes.

“He is breathing fine; what happened before he fell?” he asked Ava.

“Mhm, he wanted to use the restroom; he was actually scared of the plane landing.” Ava answered.

The doctor looked up at her and then quickly checked the boy's pulse again. After which he performed a head-to-toe check.

The doctor picked Jordan up and rested his head in his lap as he said, “What’s his name?”

“Jordan,” Ava replied.

“Hello Jordan, can you hear me?” He tapped the boys cheek slightly before looking up and saying, “His fear of the plane lading and then standing up suddenly probably caused the dizziness. He should come around in any minute. I suggest you give him some water, and he would be fine.”

Ava let out a deep sigh of relief as she looked from him to her son. Her hand going to her heart as if to stop it from beating fast.

“Thank you, doctor, that’s such a relief,” Bella said, a smile of relief on her face.

“You’re welcome; I’ll just place him in his seat,” he replied.

“Here, he seats here,” Ava said, standing up and stepping back to allow him to place him.

As soon as he did, Jordan’s eyes opened slowly, and he said, “Mom.”

“Yes, baby, I’m here; I’m right here; you gave me such a scare,” Ava said.

“Jordan?” Jenna called.

“Jordan is fine, sweetheart,” Ava said, turning to pull Jenna to her.

As she looked up to thank the doctor, he was nowhere to be found.

"Bella, where is the doctor?” Ava asked as she strapped the twins into their seats.

“He left,” Bella replied.

Ava took a bottle of water and handed it over to Jordan as she said, “I didn’t even get a name. Did you get a card or something? I didn’t get to thank him properly,” Ava said.

“No, I didn’t; he left before I could say anything,” Bella said with a shrug as she turned to Jordan.

“You gave us a mild heart attack there; I’m not sure you’re going to be flying after this trip again,” Bella said, rubbing his head.

Ava looked up and down the aisle, hoping to catch a glimpse of the man who had helped them.

As an air hostess passed by, Ava stopped her and asked, “Sorry, but please can I get the name of the doctor who helped us earlier?”

“I’m sorry, but he didn’t give us a name as well,” she replied apologetically.

“Okay, uh, thank you,” Ava said.

A few minutes later, the plane made it’s decent, and as it taxied to a stop, Ava sighed deeply as she said to herself, "Well, this is it.”

She had no idea if what had been said in the letter she had received six months ago was true, but she was about to find out. Even though that was not the main reason she had come back.

“Mom, hurry, there is a whole lot to see,” Jenna and Jordan said, holding their mother’s hand as they pulled her towards the exit.

Bella laughed out at their side, wondering if it was not the same boy who had everyone experience a mini heart attack a while ago.

As they walked, Ava suddenly stopped and said, “Bella, I think I forgot to get a bag.”

“Really, what bag?” Bella replied.

“My laptop bag,” Ava said, adding, “Can you go with them to the exit? I’ll be with you shortly.”

“Okay, come on, guys, let’s go,” Bella said as the twins took her hand.

As they neared the door, they almost ran into a trolley of luggage. Bella pulled the twins away quickly, but Jenna ended up slipping, and she fell with her hand hitting the trolley and let out a loud shout of pain.

“Hey, watch where you’re going!” Bella shouted at the porter, taking Jenna's hand to examine the small cut on her elbow.

"What the h*ll, don't you have eyes? Shouldn't you be the one to watch where you go?"

Bella heard someone say it from behind them.

"Excuse you?" Bella said, turning back to see who it was.

It was a lady, and she looked faintly familiar, but Bella could not quite place the face.

"I'm going to let this slide because of your kids; you should go pour your frustration on someone else; you know, maybe get a man that would take care of those two," the lady said with a dismissive wave of hand, without as much as a glance at the twins.

Bella felt a wave of anger, and before she could reply, the twins tugged at her hand, a soft reminder of their presence, and she took a deep breath, deciding to let it go.

"Here, take this," the lady said, throwing a few dollars at Bella's feet before adding, "That should be enough to compensate for that cut, right?"

"We don't need your f*cking money," Bella muttered loud enough for just the ladies ears.

"Whatever," the lady replied before walking away, as she muttered to herself, “It’s a big day for me; I shouldn’t spoil my mood.”

As Bella stared after her after one of her bodyguards had picked up the money, she felt Jordan pulling at her hand again and saying, "Aunt Bella, see."
