Damian

Hope sat silently beside me.

“What is it?” I asked after a few minutes.

“Effie is Tony’s daughter. Isabella confirmed it.”

“I’m not surprised.”

“They fell in love, Damian. They were young and just fell in love. You were right in what you thought. That’s why Papa sent her away, disowning her. He gave her an ultimatum: abort or leave. She left.”

I remained silent, understanding a little more of Isabella. I had pegged her to be a hateful, power hungry bitch. She might well be, but she was also stronger than I gave her credit for.

“Tony was supposed to tell your father, but he never did.”

I glanced at Hope. “I can’t say I’m surprised.”

“He let her go all alone.” Hope looked off into the distance. “He sent her money, though.” She rolled her eyes.

“Hope.” I don’t know why I felt the need to defend Tony. I wasn’t, really; I just needed to explain how things were at our house. How my father was. She opened her mouth to speak, her expression unbelieving. “Wait. I’m not defendin

Damian “I liked that,” she said, kissing me. “I’m glad, because I’ll want your little mouth around me often.” I checked my watch. They had be here in twenty minutes. All I wanted to do was hold her, stay here with her, but I had to take care of business. “Go to sleep, Hope.” I climbed out of bed and covered her with the blanket. She shook her head and rose up on an elbow. “My sister, Damian.” “She will be fine. But if she orchestrated Kyle's kidnapping, she will need to answer for that.” “You are not going to let anyone hurt her.” It wasn’t a question, but I answered it anyway. “No. I’ll keep her safe. My intention is to keep everyone safe and end this.” “I want to be there with her.” “I want you to stay out of family business.” “My sister is my family.” I shook my head, my tone harder when I spoke. “Your sister is in over her head, and I want her out of it too. Can I trust you to stay here, or do I have to bind you?” I needed her to know this conversation was over. She gla

Damian Isabella was a different story. Roman had spoken with her and told her the reason for the meeting. Maybe it was vanity, a feeling of being acknowledged as head of the DeMarco family, because for all intents and purposes, she was. We just underestimated the DeMarco family’s level of activity. It was stupid on our part. Isabella would be here bright and early, as anxious as me to put this behind her, now that she realized what she could have lost. I had Tony taken to a bedroom downstairs, knowing he would raise hell wherever he was just because he was Tony and he was piss drunk. Roman remained with my father while I went to check on Tony’s progress. “You are not boss yet,” was the greeting he threw at me when I walked into the bedroom. “You at least smell a little better,” I said, tossing one of my dress shirts at him. “Put this on.” I had changed too, wearing a suit minus the jacket. “You want me looking respectable for those assholes?” he asked, but he took it. “I know abo

Hope. Damian.Damian, no!” I held his face with one hand and pressed my other hand to the place on his side that wouldn’t stop bleeding. I kissed him. Kissed him and kissed him. When I tried to push the hair back from his forehead, I left blood in its place. His blood. God, there was so much of it. Too much. “Don’t die on me please. ” He hadn’t promised me that. He had made me three promises, but he had never promised me he wouldn’t die. I had never asked him to promise that. I had never… “Don’t die,” I whispered just to him. He was too still, and when my sister touched my shoulder, and I looked up at her through the blur the haze of my tears caused, I sucked in a trembling breath. Her face, the look in her eyes, telling me it was bad. “There is a helicopter on its way to take him to the hospital,” she whispered, kneeling down beside me, holding me when I turned my attention back to him. They would take him away. They would take him away, and I would never see him again. Why

Damian. I probably dreamed Hope calling herself pigheaded, but it made me smile all the same. And every time I opened my eyes, there she was, sitting by my side. At first, she still had blood on her. My blood. Then she looked like she had showered and changed. I saw Roman too, but she was my constant. She had remembered what I had said. What I had promised her. I vaguely recalled her voice, telling me I hadn’t yet kept the promise to give her the life she wanted. I had changed rooms. I knew it from the way the light came in the window. I wasn’t sure how long I had been in the hospital until finally, I opened my eyes, feeling a little less groggy, and the things around me didn’t seem so like a mirage. Was it a mirage? Was Hope a mirage? “Hey.” I looked up at her beautiful, smiling face. She still sat in the same place, holding my hand, watching me. “Hey.” It felt strange to speak. “How do you feel?” “Like I have been run over by a truck.” “Do you remember what happened?” My

Hope. Damian moved into a bedroom downstairs while he recovered. I slept beside him, taking care not to touch the still tender spot the bullet had ripped into. I knew he felt pain, but he insisted on less and less medication, saying he could manage it. Within a day of being home, he could walk on his own to the bathroom, although it wore him out. “I hate this,” he grumbled a week later after one of his visits to the bathroom. “I hate being weak.” I tucked the blanket up to his waist. “You are getting stronger every day.” “Not fast enough.” “You hate having someone else take care of you. You are so used to taking care of everyone and everything and being in charge of it all but can’t stand to be in a position where you need others yourself.” He studied me, then looked beyond me to the waning light outside the window. “Let’s sit outside.” “I’ll get your wheelchair.” I had already stood to unfold it. He hadn’t used it except for the time they had rolled him in here in it. “No.”

Damian. I kept my promise to Hope. Roman came to the house the following morning and handed me the initial contract she and I had signed. I set it aside and had him draw up another one. This one forgave any and all debt any DeMarco owed any spears , real or perceived, and the two families were no longer bound in any way. And it could not be overturned at any time in the future. I signed it and had a copy sent to Isabella. I would deliver a copy to my father personally. This insane vendetta was finished. I ended it as one of the two things I did during my hours long rule over the spears family before I gave everything the reign, the rule, the power over to Roman. It was another week before I could move back upstairs to my own bedroom and another month before I was fully healed. All that time, Hope stayed with me, caring for me like I didn’t remember ever being cared for by anyone apart from my mother. I also saw Naya and Kyle. She came to give me the news she too was moving away, a

    79. Mia glanced at her phone when it chimed to let her know she had a new text message. She was unsurprised to see her father’s number listed. As she started to delete it without reading, she saw part of the message: Must see you now. Urg… Devoid of a flicker of guilt, she removed it without reading past the preview. He’d been texting and calling for several days, and he would eventually realize she wanted nothing to do with him. Slipping the phone back into her purse, she considered changing her number before discarding the idea. He’d be able to find it again if she did. Her father had a number of dubious contacts living in his shadow world that could easily find a new number, so what was the point? He would eventually go away. Vadim Kasilli had no trouble forgetting he had a daughter most of the time, so whatever his purpose for trying to reach her, he’d surely give up soon. Entering the restaurant where she worked the evening shift as a server, Mia left her things in the break

    80. The gun prodded her lower back. “Then do so, miss, before Mr. O’Mara grows too impatient.” The fear in the goon’s voice fed her own. Mia forced her feet to move as she walked between the two thugs. The beauty of the marble steps didn’t impress her any more than the ornate ivory columns. She was too busy dreading her meeting with the mysterious Mr. O’Mara to be impressed by the architecture of his palatial home. The entryway and halls passed in a blur of elegant wallpaper and gleaming marble floors her flats tapped against briskly as the goons hurried her along. When they finally reached the end of a long hallway, her heart was racing from a combination of fear and exertion, since she’d had to take two steps for their one. “Knock, Wallace.” Knowing the brunette’s name didn’t put her at ease. She clenched her hands into fists as he knocked before opening the door. Mia glared at Bruno when he herded her inside roughly. She was several steps into the room before she st

The doorman said. I don’t think it was the same one that had been here when I’d skulked out on Saturday morning…thank God. “Good afternoon,” I told him. “I was hoping that you could call up to Mr. Romo Romalatti’s penthouse and let him know that Alana is here to see him.” “Yes Miss, I can do that. Please have a seat and make yourself comfortable. I’ll be right back with you.” I took a seat on one of the plush, off-white couches in the lobby. They were arranged around pretty glass tables with expensive looking vases full of flowers. I sat there and watched all the designer clothing clad people bustle back and forth while I waited. Suspiciously, I wondered how many of them were linked to the mob. “Miss?” The doorman brought me back to reality. “Yes?” “Mr. Romalatti asked me to send you up. He said that he’s in a meeting in the conference room next door but you should make yourself comfortable in the suite.” “Okay, thank you so much.” The doorman put me in an elevator that he said

  • SOLD TO THE MAFIA LORD   Chapter 130

He was a passive-aggressive son of a bitch. Shooting someone in the eyes meant, “I’m watching you,” in our world. I honestly had no idea who it could be that wanted to send me a message so desperately that they would kill my best friend to do it. “Sit down, Sammie.” Tony told me. I took a seat at the table with the others and Tony said, “Does anyone know of any beefs against us?” Everyone looked around the table and when no one said anything I asked, “Why are the Gambino’s absent?” “Carmine is still put off by the fact I won’t consider that fat fuck christopher for boss. He sent word that he couldn’t make it, made up some stupid fucking excuse so I couldn’t accuse him of disrespect, but we all know why he’s not here,” Tony said. Tony’s voice was getting raspier and he seemed like he had a lot harder time breathing every time I saw him. He was dying of throat cancer….but only he and I knew that. The Christopher he spoke so disdainfully of was the son of Carmine Gambino. Carmine ha

    129. I wanted to punch him for calling me sweetheart. What was with all of these suddenly over-familiar men? I picked up the photo and underneath it was another…it was one of Sammie and I walking arm in arm into the Glass Towers. It was stamped with Friday night’s date. The elevator Nate and I were riding in stopped and the doors slid open on my floor. I felt like my heels were glued down and I couldn’t move. To my horror, Nate had to take me by the arm and lead me out of the elevator. I think I was in some kind of mini-shock state. I found myself standing in the hallway, still gaping at the photos in my hand. Feeling sick to my stomach, I picked up the next photo and the last one was the best. It was a photo of me in Friday night’s clothes and a flagrant case of bed-head, getting into the back seat of Sammie’s limousine. The photo was clearly stamped with Saturday morning’s date. “What—Where---Why are you having Sammie followed?” I finally spit out.

  • SOLD TO THE MAFIA LORD   Chapter 128

    128. After about an hour of that, I made myself a pot of coffee…it was going to be a long day. It had been three days since Alana had walked out. I had made a grave mistake by allowing myself the pleasure of making love to her when she was too drunk to have the capacity to consent. I truly hadn’t meant for that to happen. I tried to tell myself that I was beyond the point of rational thought as well, but truthfully I wasn’t drunk, at least not from the alcohol. I was intoxicated by her. I’d been researching her and watching her for so long…every fantasy I’d had for the past year had been wrapped up in Alana. I had just completely lost my mind the moment I was actually allowed to touch her. The fact that she was allowing me to, and even encouraging it had really sent me over the edge. It was wrong though…I was wrong. I knew from the time I’d spent watching her that she wasn’t a big drinker, and she definitely didn’t sleep around. I should have had more respec

    127. Sammie had stood there looking at me after I’d pulled back. I remember that he had this really sexy grin on his face and instead of being angry, I was turned on. I had smiled back….I think and then I’d put my hands around his neck again and pulled myself back up to continue the kiss. I slid my tongue back into his mouth and that time he sucked on it. It was erotic. His hands were all over me and as I washed my body and slid my palms along my sides and across my breasts I shuddered at the memory. We started stripping each other at that point, a little at a time while we kissed. I could feel his erection pressed up against my hip and I remember that when I moaned he had whispered in my ear so close that I felt his hot breath: “Just you wait, Bella. I’m going to make sure that it’s the best you ever had.” The sound of his voice and the feel of his breath against my ear sent me into another frenzy. In the shower, my hand drifte

    126. “We would act as a couple so that no one wondered about my meetings with a reporter, and we could avoid the fear of getting caught if we tried to sneak around and communicate secretly. You could also be a part of “family” events and get to see and know the people that we’ll be “talking” about first hand. This won’t be a week-long process, Bella. This organization was hundreds of years in the making. It’ll take years to break it open.” I was glad I had finished my meal already…I would have choked on it. Years? This guy was nuts if he thought I would agree to be his fake fiancé for years. I stood up and picked up my purse. Sammie stood up as well. For a second, remembering where I was and who I was with, a dagger of fear stabbed me in my chest. He must have seen it on my face because he stepped to the side, clearing my path to the door. He wasn’t going to force me to do this. I was ashamed of myself for putting myself in a position where t

    125. “With clothes on,” she said. I laughed and said, “Yes, I’m going right now to get dressed, then I’ll order breakfast.” She only nodded, but she hadn’t let go of the doorknob. I half expected her to be gone when I got back, but to my delight and relief, she wasn’t. I found her sitting on the sofa looking out the window. I sat down in the chair across from her and smiled. She shot me a look that should by all rights have set me on fire. “Was this all some big pick-up game to you?” she asked. “A pick-up game? No, Bella. We both had too much to drink. I’m not normally a heavy drinker and last night I was looking for some liquid courage. Once you report what I have to tell you, life as I know it is going to implode. I wouldn’t have had the audacity to expect that a woman like you would ever want to be with a man like me.” She raised an eyebrow, obviously not convinced. I wish she could see inside of my head because I meant every word. I know what I am. I’ve known sinc

  • SOLD TO THE MAFIA LORD   Chapter 124

    124. I woke up in a strange place, in a strange bed, next to an extremely hot – and gloriously naked – strange man. …What happened last night? My mouth tasted like cotton and I had an icky sweet taste in my mouth that literally made me want to vomit. My stomach felt bloated, my head was pounding and I couldn’t hold my trembling hands still if I tried. There was light streaming in from the giant windows that surrounded the bed and it was doing nothing but making my head pound worse and darkening my already foul mood. I sat up slowly, not wanting to wake the strange bedfellow next to me. I tried to shake out my hair, but it was a tangled mess. The motion of sitting up had made me nauseated and once again I had the feeling that I was going to throw up. I looked around me, wondering where the bathroom was. I was humiliated enough just waking up here, the last thing I wanted to do was hurl all over hot guy. I needed to get the hell out of here. I slipped out of the bed and st

  • SOLD TO THE MAFIA LORD   Chapter 123

    123. Even not knowing exactly what Shane had planned for her, Mia was still relieved to see him when he entered the basement two days after Wallace had taken her from the street. Her first thought was he looked like hell. His normally robust tanned skin was pale, and his face looked gaunt, though he couldn’t have lost much weight in the four days since she’d seen him, even with a gunshot wound. Her gaze darted to the sling encasing his left arm, where she could see the bulky bandage covering most of the left side of his chest and clavicle underneath the thin fabric of his T-shirt. It was insane, but she had to physically bite her tongue to keep from asking how he felt and fretting over him being out of the hospital already. The reality of her position and situation made it easier to rein in the concern. She lay on the cold concrete, naked as the day she was born, with her hands cuffed to her ankles, which were spread by a metal bar. It was an obscene, undignified pose, b
