My eyes fluttered open, the world a hazy blur. My chest felt heavy, and I struggled to breathe. The scent of the hospital room invaded my senses, and I blinked against the harsh light above me.

As my vision cleared, I noticed the breathing mask strapped to my face, the plastic pressing against my skin. Panic surged through me—succubi venom. The memory flooded back—the betrayal of Gracie and how she attacked my mother then me when I tried to subdue her.

I heard the beeping of the heart monitor picking up as I remembered Gracie screaming at me as I tackled her to the ground, trying to protect my mother.

“Easy there,” a familiar voice said, snapping me out of the memory. I turned my head, wincing at the ache in my neck, to see Eddy.
