At cheerleading practice, the three girls sat exhausted on their favorite bench, taking a break from practice in preparation for the state championship.
“I wonder why Mr. Quinn asked just that guy and mandated it on everyone else” Bridget complained.
“I wonder why he refused” added Elena.
“I guess when he heard Amanda was Miranda, he froze in fire” Bridget said figuratively.
“Brid, I’m not sure anyone can freeze in fire” Elena voiced, confused at Bridget's expression.
“Uh, that’s the idea. Ask Mr. Quinn” she replied.
Bridget words shocked Amanda as she exclaimed,
“What!”
“Are u surprised? You haven’t shown an atom of niceness in school, I guess he’s scared of you” Bridget continued.
“I don’t need to prove or show anything, I have you guys. And I don’t care about what he thinks of me. All I care about is that I got the part” Amanda replied.
“You all will agree with me" Elena adjusted her shoulders as she parted her legs on the bench "that guy is fine, fresh, and his voice is, hmm, to kill for”. She commented.
“That’s true, I felt the vibration of his voice right at the depth of my chest, girl I was tripping” Bridget admitted.
“I felt it too.” Amanda said smiling. “I’ve never noticed him in our class before” she added, a little uninterested.
“That’s because you are clouded with Jake Bush the football captain” Elena said mockingly.
“You are right, you know. I guess I’ll stick to my Jake” Amanda lowered her head coyly.
“Uhhh, how romantic” Bridget and Elena chorused. Then they all burst into laughter.
******
“I’m hungry!!!” cried Drake, Amanda’s nine years old brother. “My tummy hurt” He complained holding Amanda’s skirt almost causing her to drop the pan.
“Stop it Drake, I almost ruined dinner” Amanda scolded.
“But I’m hungry”
“Me too, but one of us have to prepare the food”
Amanda returned to what she was doing not minding the pressure from the little man grumbling beside her.
“Go get dad, dinner is almost ready”
“No need, I’m here” Mr. Michael Udoh, Amanda’s dad said walking to the dinning smiling at is daughter and wondering when she got all grown up to take responsibilities around the house. For a second, his countenance changed.
“I’ll miss her a lot when she leaves for college” he admitted to himself.
“What's wrong dad?” Amanda asked with concern as she paused arranging the table.
“Nothing sweetie”
“You’re sure, dad?”
“Yes love” Michael said convincingly.
“Oh thank God, it’s ready” Drake said as he pounced on his food.
Amanda and her dad laughed as they watch Drake.
“Drake!” his father called, reminding him that they were yet to say Grace
“Sorry Dad” he apologized
“Lord, thank you for providing for us, thank you for upholding this family. Lord, as we are feasting on this meal which you have provided us with, also provide for those who have nothing to eat. Lord, bless and sanctify this food, in Jesus Name.” Michael Prayed.
“AMEN” they chorused
“You know, Drake. You need to appreciate your sister more instead of grumbling all the time”
“Yeah, I will Dad” Drake barely said with a chunk of food in his mouth.
“I wish” Amanda said laughing.
“So how was school today, dear?” Michael asked.
“Fine dad” she replied lifting a fork of spaghetti into her mouth.
“Anything new happen today?” he asked meeting her eyes as she nodded back and forth in reply.
“Like she’s going to tell you anything dad” Drake said knowing the kind of sister he had.
“What?” she asked mystified.
“Yeah Amanda, You never share your day with us” Drake pointed out.
Amanda sat motionless and shocked at her kid brother. She never realized how distant she had been and how it had affected her relationship with her family.
“But I tell you everything, even when you don’t want to hear it and I’m only nine". He complained "Do I always have to act like an adult to show example?” Drake asked seriously upset with his hands folded across his chest.
“Drake I’m still alive that means I’m the only adult here" . Michael pointed out, making sure Drake understood what he said "And that’s too harsh besides; your sister has a lot going on" . he leaned forward "Now apologize to you sister” he ordered.
“Sorry Amanda” Drake apologized in his little voice. “But dad” he went on but was interrupted by his father's irritable responds.
“I don’t want to hear it”
“She was my mother too” Drake muttered underneath his breathe, making sure he wasn’t heard.
“Well something tremendous happened to me at school today” Amanda said with a little smile on her face.
“I finally get to play Miranda in TEMPEST!!!” Amanda exclaimed.
“That’s great Amanda, I can't think of a day you stopped wanting that role” her father said ecstatically. “I don’t understand how you come to love Shakespeare so much but, I’m excited for you. I’m proud of you and I Know your mom would be proud if she was here” her dad concluded.
“Thanks dad” she said only wishing she could have that conversation with her dad. You know, the one with Jake in it.
Little Drake had been quiet for a while then suddenly he asked, “Uhh, dad I feel tired, can I go to my room now?”
“Sorry buddy, yeah sure you can” he replied.
“Thanks”
“I’ll clear the dishes” Amanda as said watched her brother leave.
Few minutes later, Drake heard a knock on his door. As much as he wanted to be alone, he was too young to barricade his door.
“How is my little man doing?” he heard his father say but he didn’t reply.
“Son, I know you are not asleep yet. I can see penny on the floor and you don’t throw him down except when you are angry” Michael bent
over to pick up the teddy bear “what did I do?” he asked, concern about his son.“Nothing dad”, he replied finally. “I’m only exhausted”
“Are you sure? Cause Penny here tells me a different story”
“Yes dad” Drake said maintaining his position on his side of his bed.
“Sure? Cause Penny here wants to play and his taking a step, another step, another –"
“Dad”, Drake said trying to avoid the hard laughter from bursting out.
“—another, another step, just one more and we made it!!!” Michael said jumping on his son bed, playing with him and danced the teddy over his face.
Drake couldn’t help it, he laughed so hard it was infectious even to Amanda who had been standing at Drakes door, unobserved.
Mr. Udoh loves making his children laugh, which alone makes him feel at peace.
Never let your child go to bed angry. That was his policy. And he was not ready to let his only beloved son sleep unhappy and worried.
“I’m sorry son. You know, we just need to give ourselves a little more time to go through this process. Your mother’s passing has made a hole in our heart, I know how you and your sister both loved your mother, I loved her too. We will go through this together, as a family. So don’t be too hard on your sister, give her time, ok?” he said to his son. Lifting his head up towards the door, he saw his daughter standing with tears pouring down from her eyes.
“You and your sister don’t have to act so tough and strong, not at all. Look at me son, I don’t carry those weights for nothing and--" Michael rolled up his short sleeve on his right arm to show his son his muscles. I am strong enough to carry us all, ok”
Drake laughed again at his dad last statement and so did Amanda.
“You can go to bed now, I love you so much”
“I love you too dad, good night dad”
“Good night son” Michael replied pecking him on his forehead. He stood up, covered his son, put off the light and went out of his room closing the door behind him.
He held his daughter hands.
“I love you too dad” she said hugging her dad.
He kissed her forehead and said “good night, sweetie”
“Good night dad” she replied and went into her room.
Michael felt something heavy in his chest, he understood what it was. So, he dashed into his room, locked his door, went into his bathroom, undressed, put on the shower and stepped in and just like a little child scolded by his parent, he wept.
And the thought of his dead wife made him weep even harder.
*********It was a beautiful morning, a beautiful morning indeed, especially for Amanda. Resting her back on her locker, smiling down on the piece of paper she was holding. Unknowingly to her, she had maintained that position for thirty minutes. She took a break from her reading and glanced at her used to be mum's brown leather watch, which she inherited. Returning her gaze again to the love letter which she held, she immediately realized as she quickly looked at her watch again."Oh shit, Mr. Quinn will be so pissed," she said. She quickly kept the paper inside her back, locked her locker and dashed to the theater.
Amanda and Bridget left together to the school field where they used for their cheer leading practice. They sat on a long bench with there eyes staring at nothing. Silent, listening to the chattering of students who were at a distant.“I broke up with Max.” Bridget Pierced through the silence between them.“What!" Amanda exclaimed, turning to glance at her friend who was still looking straight ahead. “Why? I mean, you guys were the highlight of romance when he was still at Sultan High and even when he went to College. I remember I always and still wish I was in your shoes.”“Amanda, you won’t fit in these shoes. Besides, if wishes were horses, beggars will ride on it.”“Ok, please tell me what happened.”This time facing Amanda, she said. “Babe, I’m picking the pieces of my shattere
“Mark! No mistakes this time. Go over your lines again.” Mr. Quinn ordered“Yes sir.” he replied“Amanda, are you ready?” Mr. Quinn asked“Yes I am,” she replied“Very good then, let’s begin.”FERDINANDOh most dear mistress, The sun will set before I shall dischargeWhat I must strive to doMIRANDAIf you’ll sit down,I’ll bear your logs the while. Pray give me that;I’ll carry it to the pile.
Tonight was one of the nights Mrs. Tonia Robertson prepares dinner for both families. Amanda and Bridget helped set the table while the men sat in the living room watching football.“Men, they love sport. If you allow them, they can watch it forever and forget about everything else.” Tonia, Bridget mom said. Dropping a large bowl of rice at the middle of the table. Both girls laughed at her humor.“My dad pretends he hears us whenever we ask for anything when he’s watching the game. He grant us his permission, every time. Just to get rid of us.” Amanda said laughing again.“You see what I mean? Eric is the worst when he’s watching the game. He keeps yelling like the team is in the living room with him." Tonia added."Exactly, that too." Amanda concurred"But You shouldn’t take advantage of your dad lik
*********The long anticipated day was finally here and the Sultan champions were rushing out of the school bus into the school hallway, letting out a victory cry. Amanda and Bridget held high the giant cup, flaunting their achievement to all of Sultan high while Elena announced its entry. This was the greatest moment Amanda had anticipated for a long time and now, it had come to past in her time as the Cheer Captain of the Sultan's Flower.“Coach Susan!” Amanda called leading her squad to where their coach stood talking to Principal Gregory. And when they got closer to Susan, Amanda and Bridget, handed the cup to her.“Oh, my girls!” she exclaimed ecstatically, collecting the cup from both girls
The news of Elena's mom shocked Amanda and Bridget. Digesting this new information was quite unsettling for both girls.“Sharon? What does she want this time, doesn’t she like, have a new family now?” Amanda asked infuriated.“Yes she does. Do you remember what happen the last time she came?” she asked, checking if they could still recall the event that transpired when Sharon last visited.“Huh, yeah that should be three years ago.” Bridget replied, vaguely remembering what actually happened. Scratching her forehead gently, she said “She came by to return all the photos she had of you which was wired because every mother should want to keep something of their child as a memento."“Not my mom. She said I look so much like my dad and looking at me reminds her of him. This annoys her more than life itself, so she told me. She wants nothing to do wit
*******Amanda was so furious, she felt the urge to go over there and confront Bridget. “She knows how I feel about him, how could she do this to me?" she wondered sorely "What could she be doing with him and why will he ask me to meet him here?” Not caring about the answers to her painful questions, she was most interested in their discussion even with the thought of what she would hear might hurt her, she still didn’t care. Amanda gently and quietly took few steps backward and then finally made her way behind the burger truck. She made sure she could clearly hear them as she squat down, resting her back on the truck.
********Amanda walked to the bench in front of the table that has their shoes and dresses on it and sat there; she slightly pushed the dresses and shoes aside as she crossed hands on the table.Amanda thought so hard on how to construct her words so it won’t sound harsh and all she could say was “Start talking.”Bridget and Elena sat on the opposite bench facing Amanda. “We heard rumors about Jake’s dealings but we were not sure, not until Elena brought facts.” Bridget said. Flashing back to the event that transpired before now, Elena went on “I was in the ladies when the trinique walked in. Juliet was furious and she promised to send Jake to Jail for what he did to her sister, I saw it as an opportunity." she paused, catching Amanda's confused stare, she quick
Eight years later (after SEE ME) ______________________________________~~**~~**~~“I don’t have a problem.” Amanda yelled at the group, who had their seat form a large circle in the hall while she stood in front of her seat. Amanda has been with the group for two weeks and she already hated everyone and every moment of it. The room was filled with traumatized females, people who did worse than she ever did.“Besides, this punishment doesn’t fit my crime. Which what I did wasn’t even a crime.” she continued immediately.“We are not saying you have a problem, Amanda.” the group leader, Augusta said “we are just saying you should go through the fixing process with us.”She continued, giving a phony smile to hide her frown. “Why waste your energy
For Amanda, her story had only just begun. She may not have found her secret admirer to feed her curiosity but, she believed that she had time on her side or so she thought. ************That day tagged graduation was finally here, holding so many mixed feelings in the air. Although many of them would miss their days in high school, as many couldn't wait to leave, they still all could not avoid the feeling of facing the new phase of their lives. Amanda, sitting in between her two best friends, stretched out her hands and held firm on their hands as they listened to Sam Turner, the Sultan high Student body president speech. “-- High school doesn’t end the same for everyone." He went on, placing both hands on the glass podium. "Some have happy endings and some don't. I have come to realize that a high school achievement is not all about your date to prom but about passion, diligence and dedication. We have learnt from each other positively or negatively, we'v
**********Margret helped Elena set the table for dinner. Arranging each delicacy accordingly on the long, rectangular, glass dining table. It was indeed the best moment to celebrate. Elena was very happy with the news her dad came back with, she couldn’t imagine how her life would be like leaving with Sharon. To her, Sharon was her mother by nature and not by heart and she was replaceable. “Margret, can you finish this up while I go get ready?” Elena asked politely. “Yes ma’am. You should also check on your father. I’m sure he’s having trouble figuring which shirt is appropriate for tonight.” Margret said with a wide grin. “I will.” Elena said laughing at Margaret jokes. She went into her room, had a quick shower and the
Sharon felt she was splurging her precious time on her ex husband. Derek was never going to comply. She had come to realize, even then, she still had to try knowing Elena was his only weakness. Sharon was so angry that she attempted to leave when an elderly man approached them, forcing her to land back on her seat. He was dressed in a black suit and his gray tie tugged firmly around his neck. All the years Sharon spent married to Derek, she had known he had many tricks up his sleeves. This time, she was curious on what new trick he would display. But, seeing this elderly, cooperate dressed man holding a suitcase, she said to herself "So, he's eventually going to give in." She smiled, praising her hard work. “Mr. Maxwell, you made it. Good to see you.” Mr. Benson stood up and
**********Amanda was yet to recover from the emotional state she had been since the whole secret admirer drama. Although she had convinced herself that he wasn't real but, anytime she goes over his letter, some part of her still believed he was. It was a sunny afternoon, the fresh air traveled the nice fragrance of the different flowers around Elena's house. Amanda and Bridget sat in the kitchen table while Mr. Benson made orange juice for them.“Mr. Benson, please speak to Sharon. Elena can’t—" Amanda withheld her last words as soon as she saw Elena walk in through the front door, carrying a basket filled with groceries and an extra nylon bag with fruits and bottled drinks in it.“Ah, she’s back.” Mr. Benson said out. Elena walked into the
*******The girls rushed into the theater, it was almost empty the receptionist had said the show ended two hours ago but Amanda asked if she saw any teenage boy standing alone probably waiting for someone. "How could she have?" Amanda thought. "This is a theatre. Of course there could be a million people, including teenagers standing and waiting for someone." “Not exactly," Amanda leaped in hope hearing the lady's voice "But there was one teenage boy pacing back and forth the lobby. If that was the boy you wanted to see, you just missed him. He just left few seconds ago with an older guy, who looked like his elder brother, I presumed. I noticed he paraded the lobby for hours and checked his wrist watch each second. I was forced to ask if he was waiting for someone out of curiosity, that w
