After going to bed with a nagging headache, I woke up the next morning with a strange heaviness in my heart but I wasn’t going to allow it ruin my day.

After everything that had happened the day before, I had made up my mind to focus on getting my mission done and also stop getting bothered by whatever Damien and Cloris did, because our relationship was private and it didn’t matter what he did in public. Their relationship, whatever it was, was their business. Not mine.

I repeated that mantra to myself as I got dressed for work, pulling on my favorite blazer and neatly combing my hair into a low bun. Today wasn’t about Damien. Today was about me. My job, my goals, and my peace of mind. If Damien wanted Cloris, fine. That was his choice. But I wasn’t going to lose my mind or keeping feeling hurt because of him, I knew what I was getting into.

I let out a small sigh before grabbing my bag, walking out of my apartment and headed to take the bus to work. Before I walked into the office

“Or what?”“You’re playing a dangerous game, this girl,” she says in a low and dangerous voice. “One you’d regret.”“I’m not playing any games and quite frankly, you know nothing about me,” I spoke up, already tired of her behavior. “If Damien wants to be with you, then that’s fine. But, don’t try to drag me down to make yourself feel better.”She let out a loud and dangerous laughter before walking to me and only stopping few inches away. “You’re so stupid, Amanda.”“No,” I spoke up, my voice firm yet calm. “I am not stupid and I won’t take any more of your insults just because I’m trying to respect my boss. I’m not interested in any of this.”She didn’t say anything, didn’t react it even act like she had heard me and the room fell silent. The silence stretched out for a very long time and we just stood there, staring at each later. The air was filled with a tension so heavy and thick that I started feeling suffocated. I could feel my heart beating faster but I refused to back down.

I didn’t want to risk Cloris carrying out her threat so I stayed away from Damien and sanded him like the plague. If I saw him coming, I passed the other side, if he called, I transferred it to voicemail. I even stopped going to meetings to avoid being in the same space as him and risking a personal contact with him. It was hard but definitely not impossible, I could feel Cloris’ eyes on me whenever she same to the company. It felt like she could see through me, and if I didn’t like living my life on somebody else’s terms, I had no choice but to do this. It had been week since I stared ignoring Damien and I could tell that he was already noticing something was wrong but I paid him no mind. I had always gone to work, sort out the documents that I had to and used my extra time to keep trying to find information on Ryan but that too was difficult. I was currently in my office, going through the stack of documents that were on my table when Damien walked past with Cloris by his side. M

The next morning, I woke up with a start and as I prepared for the day ahead I kept repeating the conversation I had with Jay in my head. I headed to work and settled in behind my desk as usual but instead of getting to my normal routine, I decided to spend my time to dig dirt on Cloris but I got no information. A few days passed and I still had not gotten shy information on either Cloris or Ryan. I was seated in my room, going through files and documents I had copied to my laptop. It was dark outside and way past midnight but I was not sleepy, the only thing keeping me going was the words I kept telling myself, willing myself to believe I was getting closer to the truth. For now, my focus was singular- Cloris. The dim light of my laptop casted faint shadows across my body but I was focused on going through the files throughly. In the days that had passed, I had been going through every piece of information I could find on her and taking every lead that I got. Social media accoun

The next morning, I woke with only one thing in mind- go to the board and expose everything in front of all of them seated. It was easier said than done though because I wasn’t going to be allowed to enter since I was not part of the board. I had stayed up most of the night, planning my moves carefully and gathering concrete evidence so as not to be caught off guard if asked different questions. Cloris and Ryan were trusted members of the board, so my words were not going to be so easily believed. I grabbed my bag that was now filled with documents I’d be needing and my laptop. The folder on my laptop contained everything needed for me to expose them to Damien and the board. With a small sigh, I walked out of my apartment and headed for the office. Once I got to the office, I stood outside with my beat pounding and my mind racing. With a made up mind, I walked into the building and headed for the elevator with my heels silently clicking against the floor. I was going to do this no

I stood frozen in the empty conference room, Cloris’s ultimatum replaying in my head like a cruel echo as I kept staring at her retracing figure until she disappeared from my view, leaving me to stare at the empty hallway. What am I going to do?Was I really going to risk all of this and break Damien’s heart or was I going to give up on my mission to ruin Ryan and make him suffer for all he had done. But, my relationship with Damien- though it was barely holding on- and my entire career would crumble if she went public with my secret. She knew who I truly was- knew everything and the reason I was here. And her threats weren’t empty. If I didn’t leave, she would destroy me.I stood there for a few more minutes contemplating what to do. Finally, I came to a conclusion, I wasn’t going to let Cloris win but I had to leave- leave so I could see another day and think of a better plan. Just going in there and acting without thinking wasn’t going to work because she could twist my words and

Looking up to see who I had bumped into, it was not one else other than Andrew. “Oh it’s you,” he said as his eyes met with mine. I quickly averted my eyes and dropped it back to the floor, increasing my pace in trying to gather my things together so I could run- run as far as possible away from him and this building. “Amanda?” He called, his tone soft but probing. “What is going on? Where are you rushing to? And why are you carrying a box of… everything?”I had no idea of what I was going to day to him, how was I even supposed to reply him? I kept my eyes glued to the floor, unable to meet his eyes. “It’s… it’s nothing,” I finally managed to say, my voice trembling. “Amanda,” he called my name again, his voice firmer this time as he placed his hand on mine to stop me. “Talk to me, you know you can. What happened?”The dam broke. The tears I was holding back fell free, one slipped down my cheeks followed by another and then another. I bit my lips gently, trying to get myself toge

“I know that you are,” he replied almost immediately. “I know you and I can tell that you’re lying.”“Did you call to argue about my mental state or what?” I asked him, my voice filled with mock seriousness. “Okay. Okay, I’m sorry,” he apologized, his voice filled with sincerity. “But, you really do sound like someone that run over by a big emotional truck.”I huffed out a laugh despite myself. “Thanks for that visual, Andrew. Very helpful.”“See, I can make you laugh,” he said and I good tell that he was smiling. “But, seriously Amanda, you don’t sound like yourself at all and it’s quite heartbreaking to see you that is always strong like this.”He meant to make me feel better with his words but I couldn’t help but be reminded of how far I had steered from why I really came back to this city. “Thank you, for looking out for me,” I whispered into the phone, not sure if he had heard me. “So, this is what we are going to do to help you feel better,” Andrew started, his voice now fille

“Andrew,” I called, my voice soft and cautious. “I need to say something to you.”His smile faltered. “Okay…”I exhaled, making an effort to speak carefully and avoid offending him. “I am really sorry for the way I have treated you up until today. I know I’ve ignored you, been distant and even rude to you when all you tried to do was to be there,” I started, my voice filled with sincerity. “You didn’t deserve any of that.”“Amanda-““Wait, let me finish,” I spoke up again, cutting him off. “I have been cold to you. I know you… care about me, like me even. Probably more than you should. And I hate that I can’t feel the same way.”Andrew kept looking at me with an unreadable expression, but like I asked, he didn’t try to say anything or cut me off. “It’s not that you’re not handsome or amazing, because you are,” I continued. “And I know any woman would be lucky to have you as their partner. But… I can’t reciprocate your feelings. My heart is… elsewhere. And I’m sorry if it seemed lik

AnnaI couldn’t stop looking at the woman that was in front of me. She walked closer to me and wrapped her hands around me, pulling me into a hug and that was only when I realized that it was real and I wasn’t dreaming. Emma- my Emma was really standing in front of me.She was alive and well after all these years. I had cried and looked for her every day even after I was told she bribed in the fire, I had refused to give up on my search for her because they provided me with no body.Only after searching years did I stop, and now she was standing right in front of me. She was alive, just like I had believed it, I wrapped my arms around her tightly, tears welling up in my eyes as I hugged her like my life depended on it. “Emma…” I managed to say, pulling away from her and holding her by the shoulders, staring at her intently. Her eyes were glistening with tears and her lips trembled as she tittered my smile. “Let’s go sit,” she said in a soft tone. “I need to explain everything.”I g

AndrewAfter Amanda and I planned out how things would go and how she should meet Anna, she finally left, happier than she had come. I was grateful that she was safe and they things had turn out amazing for her. Immediately Amanda left, Anna had called me and told me how busy she was and that she only had a few minutes for break and she decided to check in on me. I assured her that I understood and I took that as the right opportunity to ask her out on a date, using the excuse of her being stressed out and we could use that time to destress while spending time with each other. She agreed and we ended the call. I immediately called Amanda and told her about what I had planned, she thanked me profusely and I ended the call, going to get ready for the date. After I was done dressing, I got into my car and headed to Anna’s apartment. When I got there, I got down from my car and walked to the door with some flowers I had picked up on my way there. “Okay, you can do this, Andrew,” I sa

Andrew “I find it hard to believe you,” Anna finally said, her voice cracking. “If you were able to hide this from me, what more are you hiding from me?”“I’m not hiding anything from you, Anna. I swear it,” I replied her. She didn’t reply but she turned away from me and started pacing around the room. I looked at her silently, waiting for her to say something. I had been so worried about Amanda and I had said what I shouldn’t have and now I had angered her, I prayed silently, hoping that she would forgive me. “Anna, please,” I murmured again. “Just listen to me.”She stopped pacing and turned to face me, her blue eyes filled with uncertainty. “Do you swear, Andrew? Swear to me that’s there’s nothing more to you and Amanda expert being friends.”I quickly got up and walked to her, taking her hands and holding on to them firmly, my eyes locking with hers. “I swear by everything I have, Anna. There’s nothing. Amanda is just a friend and that is what she would forever remain.”“Prom

Andrew “I’m sorry okay?”“Apology accepted,” I replied, mirroring her smile. We pulled away from each other and she went to turn on the TV picking movie of her choice like I had asked her to.We sat on the floor, my legs open and her in between them, resting on my chest as we watched the movie. We watched the movie for a while before we started talking about other thing, barely paying any mind to the movie that was playing. “Do you want more cookies?” She asked, picking up the plate and bringing it closer to me. I grinned. “If I eat any more, I won’t fit into my jeans tomorrow.”“Your loss,” she teased, biting into one herself. This was what I loved about Anna- things with her always felt so easy, so natural. But with Amanda, it was the opposite, I still couldn’t wrap my head around how they were related, they were different. Anna sat up before turning and facing me directly, bending her head slightly with a small smile on her face. “So… how’s Amanda? I haven’t seen her around

The air was filled with a suffocating tension as I drove, I held on to the steering wheel tightly, driving through both empty and busy streets trying to get to the location Amanda had sent me as fast as I could. She was sitting beside, silent and nervously staring out the window. I knew how badly she wanted to save Damien, it was weird to me, when she had left the office without a word, he didn’t even look bothered or try to reach out to her. But here she was, trying all her best to save the man that could have possibly killed her father. She didn’t mind, all she wanted was for him to be safe, even if he’d never get back to her. I admired her and how trusting she was because she was going to meet a guy names Jay. I didn’t know why, but the minute she mentioned his name, I started feeling weird about it because something about the man even though I had never met him seemed suspicious. I tried telling her but she brushed it aside and said he had always helped her. I wanted to stop h

After I settled into my apartment, I showered and had a change of clothes then headed to Damien’s house, I wasn’t going waste anymore time or let doubt could my mind. I was going to do this now. I needed to tell him everything. Damien’s house loomed large and imposing as I approached the gates. My heart pounded with each step. Would he even let me in?The guard at the gate must have somehow recognized me and he allowed me through without hesitation. I walked to the front door of the house, my hands shaky and my stomach in knots. Hesitantly I ringed the bell, expecting the maid to come open the door but, instead, it was Damien who came to open the door. My breath caught in my throat as I stared at him and for a moment, none of us said anything. “Amanda?” he finally spoke up, his voice soft and filled with surprise and an emotion I couldn’t quite place my hands on. I let out a small sigh. “It’s Emma,” I said softly. “And I came back… for you.”His eyes widened in shock me he moved

Damien’s words kept replying in my head over the weeks that passed. He was right, I had to live my truth if I really wanted to make things right. There was no need in pretending to someone I wasn’t, I had done that for a reason and even if I had been successful with my mission. I was still unhappy and I felt bitter. If living my truth was what would make Damien forgive me or even come back to me, I didn’t mind. But, most of all, I was doing this for myself. I needed to reconnect with my family and give myself the chance to be happy. I booked an appointment with the surgeon that had changed my face years ago and started packing my things for the trip to Miami. A few days later, my trip was booked, my bags were packed and I headed to the airport. The flight there was long but it was worth it, I hated traveling but I had to do this. Immediately, the plane landed, I ordered a ride to the hotel I had booked down and I didn’t bother resting before I headed to the clinic. I alighted

Few days after Jay was arrested and I was saved from almost dying, it was aired on the news. Apparently, Jay was not what he had painted himself to be to me. He was evil and sinister, in fact he had been diagnosed with a mental disorder and was supposed to be treated but he didn’t get help. All he wanted was revenge, just like… me. They had also raided the creepy looking building he had been staying in and they had found the documents that contained all the necessary information to prove that Damien was innocent. Jay had it all this time but still lied that we had to go to the warehouse just because he wanted to get rid of me, he knew Damien was innocent but was blinded by revenge that he wanted him to suffer no matter what. A tear slipped down my face and another and then another. I was now fully crying and I just couldn’t stop myself. My life was messed up, no one in it was good and I feared that the one person that might’ve been the truth would want nothing to do with me. I wa
