THE MEIR FAMILY
Brooke opened up her bedroom window, letting air into the room but pushing a boy out. Sandino held onto the small ledges of the single family home as tight as he could as he made his way over to the ladder, which sat in a dark corner. Its one thing to sneak in when the sun is up, its another to sneak out in darkness. The wrong footing could send Mr. Lovett falling, hopefully landing on the soft grass of the yard, instead of the concrete patio. He moved at such a fast pace, it made Brooke nervous, but he reached the ground safely. Brooke found herself able to breathe again, not realizing she has been holding her breath in suspense. She pushed the window down to a close, just as her bedroom door swung open. Her younger brother stood in the doorway with a disapproving look upon his face.
"Don't you knock?" she spoke, annoyed, plopping herself on to her queen sized bed. Micheal stared.
"Sneaking boys out of your room again?" He assumed with a chuckle. It was no secret to him that his sister was friendly when it came to men. He had tried to talk some sense into her before, but she wasn't ready to listen. He wondered if she ever would be. In the end, the conversation always ended with her being the big sister, and him being the little brother. He had given up. She'd find out on her own how men could betray and be up to no good. All he did was tease now. She stared at him, no response to his comment.
"What do you want Mikey?" She asked, arching her perfectly plucked brows. He wished she would stop calling him that. He was seven-teen years old now. Not a little kid, which is when the nickname Mikey came up. Mike bit into an apple that he had in his right hand, smiling as he chewed. What he was about to tell Brooke would change her attitude quickly. It was something they both could be very happy about. Brooke waited impatiently for him to swallow, her pointy narrow nose wriggling in frustration.
"Damon's here," he responded, grinning. Brooke's face lit up as she raced past her younger brother, down a small hallway and into the living room. A dark haired man sat on the couch, turned towards their mother Ella, his back facing Brooke. She felt her heart race with excitement, as she let out an ecstatic shriek, causing the broad shoulder man to turn around. His light green eyes went straight to her face.
Damon moved away when when he graduated, and hadn't been back much since. It had been about a year since the last time he had visited his family. He may have called almost every day, but that didn't tell him how much his family had grown. His mother had lost a lot of weight appearing thinner in the face and smaller in the hips. Micheal looked like a man now. He was taller than his big brother, however, he still seemed messier. Damon had based that on the fact the it was only eight in the evening, and he walked around in a semi stained bath robe, opened, where everyone could see his blue and white striped boxers. And his hair was newly dyed brown with highlighted strands of blond, and it laid messily over his head. Micheal and Damon didn't have a close relationship. Maybe that was Damon's fault. After all, when you move away you tend to lose contact with some people. Damon never thought it would be with his siblings though. Thinking about it, Micheal himself could be at fault. He wasn't a big communicator. He was quiet and kept to himself most times. So much had changed. Damon's eyes wondered over to Brooke. She was a young woman now. It seemed like it was just yesterday that she was a toddler, following his every move. He used to work so hard to get away from her. Secretly he missed that. Brooke was his best friend once upon a time. She had long, gorgeous, dark brown hair and a bright smile. She was an elegant woman. She looked like their mother used to when she was in high school. Everyone had grown, and Damon hadn't been around to witness it. But it didn't matter. He was here now, and he was hoping all of that would change. He wouldn't miss anything else.
"Hey Brooke," he said with a grin as he got on to his feet. She hopped over her mothers short stubby legs, and into her other brothers arms.
"Damon, I'm so glad to see you!" Brooke Exclaimed. "I thought you weren't transferring for another week." That was the plan. He wasn't supposed to be home until next weekend. Funny thing about plans though, even if you believe they are definite, they have a way of changing. He could have called and let them know, but the element of surprise was much better.
"Things changes," Damon replied. "My client moved earlier than expected."
KAHLAN AND TINA
I had explored the house on my own, while Ernistina talked away on the phone. Within two hours I felt like I knew my new home inside and out, taking notice in the number of possible exits. There weren't many. Tina had reached her goal as well, telling the judge back in Ohio how great everything was going, and how excited I was about the move. Obviously she had lied. But I let it go. She was only looking out for me, as always. When Tina was first telling me the details of the house, she never mentioned the fact that I would have my own little pool in the backyard. This was one thing that did excite me. Unlike the ocean, I knew exactly what was at the bottom of a six foot pool, and it didn't scare or worry me a bit. I was free to get lost in my thoughts here. I was free to wash away everything bothering me. It may not have been the rainy days in Ohio, but it would do. While Tina continued to talk to others who had no concern to me, I found myself getting comfortable on the gray love seat in the living room. I felt like I was being swallowed by its large cushions at first, but with the right amount of shifting, I found the perfect spot. I pretended to watch reruns of I love Lucy, but within a few seconds of the first scene I drifted off to sleep.
"Kahlan! Get up!" My eyes rolled around as I tried my hardest to focus on the face in front of me. My social worker stared down at me. I sat up, using the back framing of the couch as a crutch, so I wouldn't fall back. Tina was on her fragile knees beside me, hands resting on my legs. "You gave me a scare," she said expressing her concern, moving my light brown bangs out of my face. I sighed. I didn't think you were going to wake up for a moment." I smiled at her sleepily. How long had it been since I got a good nights sleep, no interruptions, no nightmares? It had been awhile.
"How long was I asleep?" I asked.
"About an hour," she replied, feeling my forehead as if she were checking for a fever. I wasn't sick, I thought. Not in the way that she thought anyway. I may have been a little sick in my mind, considering the fact that I could hear Ryan's voice in my head, and even sometimes had hallucinations of him. Sometimes, I could smell the cologne that he would usually wear, and it would make me sick to my stomach. I just wanted to sleep and dream a good dream. Was that too much to ask for? "I'm sorry I had to wake you," she continued, getting on to her feet, as she saw me rubbing my eyes. "I just... I need to show you how to work the alarm system." This awoke me much faster. To me, an alarm system was the difference between life and death. If the alarm were to sound, it would either give me time to prepare myself and be more alert, or scare off the intruder. An alarm system might be a step to getting better sleep. I got on my feet and followed Tina out of the living room, down the white empty hallway of marble looking tiles towards the main door. Beside the main door was a white box.
"What do you need me to do?" I asked.
"I just need you to pick a four digit code that only you would know." I stared in thought.
"It could be anything?"
"Anything number form, yes." She confirmed, opening the box, revealing numbers, a few symbols and colored buttons. I took a deep breath. What was something that no one else would ever guess? I didn't have to think too hard or too long. I put in the numbers. "Don't tell anyone this number," she continued as I stepped back. "Not even me, do you understand?" I gave a quick nod. She could count on it. Giving this number out would be a mistake. I knew that. She showed me how to disengage the alarm, and how to sound it off. I had it down pat in a couple of minutes.
It was time. Ernistina Bail stood at the main door, on the porch, hair flapping just a bit in the light breeze.
"Are you sure about this?" She asked, gripping the handle of her russet snakeskin purse tightly. I gave a little nod. "I don't have to leave Kahlan. I can stay in the guest bedroom a couple of nights if you need me to." I stared at her. It suddenly dawned on me that she was afraid for me. But why? She had said herself that everything was going to be okay, and when she said it, I believed her, and I thought she believed in her own words, but as I looked her in the eye at this moment, I saw doubt. Was there something wrong? Was she hiding something from me? No, of course not. Tina would tell me everything, just as I swore I would do the same for her. I took a deep breath.
"Tina, I have to learn to be by myself," I replied, "I can't be afraid anymore." My response scared me. This was not me talking. This was me using Tina's words against her. I really did want her to stay, but at the same time I didn't want to be this person anymore. I had to start somewhere. She nodded. She began to back up into the darkness, away from the little light of the porch, blending in with the large bushes that hovered over the door just a few feet away. "Tina?" She stopped and looked as if she hoped that I had changed my mind. "Tomorrow, do you think we could cut down the bush and add more locks to this door?" She gave a slight grin.
"Of course, anything for you Kahlan."
KAHLAN The next day started early, six am to be exact. Today I started school. Tina told me to get a good nights sleep, but I was quite restless; too many bad dreams. Though he went away, the dreams didn't. Along with today being the first day of school, I also had an appointment with a lame therapist. Doctor Damon Meir. It was an agreement between the Judge and I. It was the only way he'd sign my emancipation papers. The only thing worse that could happen to me that night was being placed in foster care. To be placed with people I didn't know, maybe participate in some sort of group therapy and talk about my feelings and the past. No, I didn't want that. As far as I was concerned, I wanted to act like nothing had ever happened. I wanted to just start life over and move on. That's when the idea of emancipation popped up. It surprised Ernistina that I was approved, even with the conditions and rules that I had to follow; though they were all very simple. Stay low, stay out of trouble,
THE BOYS "I hate this place," Brandon muttered to his friends, gripping the two straps of his backpack, which hung from his shoulders. Chad gave his friend a little pat, as if he were encouraging Brandon. Chad didn't really mind school. He could see his friends, and all of his teachers loved him. It was going to be sad when he left this place. In high school he was famous. Everyone knew him. Who knows how it would be out there in the real world. Brandon didn't like it because he had a tutor for almost every class he was taking. Hence, why he needed scholarships to get into college. For Jason, school was school. He came in and did the work that was asked of him. That was really all it took to survive high school. They made their way to the side doors that led to the cafeteria, in hopes to get some breakfast before the bell rang. They were on their way through the steel gray doors when Brandon unexpectedly threw his muscly arms out in front of the guys, causing them to stop. "What is i
KAHLAN AND CHAD Some job Ashley did, I thought to myself as I stood outside of the door of my first period class. I think I was expecting her to be at my side through out the day, but instead she dropped me off at my first class, followed by general directions to all my others. Here we go. The new girl was my title now. I didn't like it, but it was better than some of the alternatives. I walked into the class, keeping my head down. The female teacher who sat at her desk rose to her feet, smiling. Her red hair was tied to the back, where loose curls hung. Her hands went automatically to her side, and I could tell she hadn't been a teacher for more than a few years. She wore loose tan jeans and a navy blue button up shirt. After all, not many teachers got the excited look in their eyes when getting a new student. I could tell she had been expecting me. She explained that the students were doing an independent reading for the remainder of class, and since I had yet to check out a history
JASON AND AMY "There she is," Jason said aloud, as if there were people around who could hear him. He had watched Amy long enough to know that she was always the last person to come out of Ms. Rockwell's fourth period English class. Watched? Thats the wrong word to say. He admired her from afar. She was perfection. She was beauty. She hugged her English book to her chest, arms crossed along the back, and hands gripping the sides. She stared ahead, almost as if she were lost in her own thoughts. Her hips swayed to a rhythm only she knew. And for a moment, he could have sworn time slowed. Possibly even stopped. The ends of her dress swished loosely around her thighs, stopping at the knee of her bronzed legs. He took her in. Her eyes met with his, and he swore he could have swallowed a lung. It became harder to breathe. She smiled. Did she really see him? Or was this her being friendly, as she was to most everyone in school. She looked away. He took a deep breath. Now that it seemed like
KAHLAN AND THE GIRLS Walking through the lunch room, I felt another panic attack coming on. The cafeteria was packed. Every circular and rectangular table had been taken. The lines to get your food were long and slow paced. I knew that it would be this way, no matter how much I tried to deny it. My fellow peers had already settled into their groups. I at least hoped there would be one empty table where I could sit alone. I was good at being antisocial. I practically perfected it over the last few months. As I scanned the lunchroom, there was a table that I didn't mind sitting at. There weren't any young men. And I knew two out of the three girls sitting. So I grabbed my lunch tray and went straight to Carly's table. As I sat, I felt a little tension, as all three girls' eyes were on me. Carly's blue eyes looked ice cold. "Hi Kahlan," Ashley greeted, looking up at me, remembering me from his morning. She was the only one who made me feel welcomed. "Hi." I still looked Carly in the fa
JAMES AND MICHEAL "So what was up with you and Justin today man?" Mike asked as he and his best friend made their way through crowds of students to the parking lot. The school day was finally over. It was kind of a dumb question though. He knew how James felt about Justin. James hated him, for reasons he could understand. First, Justin and Carly had a past. It was a very special past. Justin and Carly were each others first, and no one could ever replace your first. The people around James, Justin and Carly remembered, and the halls of the school held memories. First dances, first kisses... it could be a lot to take in, especially when your girlfriend and her ex boyfriend were still friends. Though they didn't flaunt their friendship in front of James. Just the fact that he knew was a problem. "Its the same thing everyday," James replied, "He always has to bring Carly in the picture." That also was the problem. When an argument went down between the two, Justin would always bring up
KAHLAN AND DAMON The bus ride home was terrible. I already had a frustrating day. The mixed smells of perfumes, cologne, and sweat was making me nauseated, and having Carly scowling at me the entire time was not helping. She looked so angry. I finally looked away, focusing my attention on the fast moving houses outside the window. It seemed that I had a 'friend' that lasted all of ten seconds. I wasn't in the mood for all the drama that high school came with. I had bigger problems on my plate. I really just wanted to go home. But I couldn't. My day was not finished quite yet. I got off the bus, looking down the street and seeing my home. I wanted to go inside and lay under the covers of my bed, but that was going to wait. I had one thing to take care of before I locked myself away from the world. I had a meeting with my therapist, compliments to Judge Atkin. I had a few blocks to walk before I would reach my destination, so I figured I'd take time to decide how I was going to approach
BROOKE AND JAMES I love this, Brooke thought as she lay in tangled sheets with James Blake. His thick eye lashes lay against his cheeks as he slept. His bulky arms wrapped around her tiny body as if he were trying to protect her, as if he wanted to keep her close and snuggle with her. He wasn't the type to snuggle unless it was in his sleep, or unless it was with Carly. Carly. Brooke rolled away from his grasp and on to her side. She sighed. Carly was like her sister. She could tell her anything and everything and trust that it would stay between them always. She could count on her like no other. And this was the way that she repaid her. She was a terrible friend. What was she going to do? She had never meant to sleep with James. It was something that happened. And then it kept happening, and before she knew it, she was too deep to get out. He was addicting. She tossed wildly onto her back, causing James to open his eyes. "Whats wrong?" He asked her with a stretch. She looked. "Carl
~ELLA~ Ella rushed up to one of the cops on the scene. The waiting around was killing her. The cops had begun to clear out one part of the building. There was an automotive class-taking place, and their escape was out the garages of the North side of the building. Officers were planning on storming through there. That was the last that she had heard of their plans. There were two students hurt, but at least ten evacuated. That gave some hope. There were no fatalities. Ella wanted to help."I'm an off duty nurse," she stated, "I'm here to offer any assistance." The cop looked at her."Do you have your badge?" She pulled out her nursing badge and let the cop examine it. At least he was being thorough."Go on over to the par
~JUSTIN, EMETT AND MYA~ Mya snuck the guys into one of the pool exits. It threw them off course just a bit to get the front office, but as long as they got inside, Justin didn’t care. He would find a way to Kahlan."How did you know this would be open?" Justin asked quietly. He wasn’t comfortable with Mya leading them. As men, they should be protecting her. She should be behind them."They cut the electricity off," she whispered back, "That means that the doors that were usually on manual locks, would open." Justin never paid attention to things like that, so he was glad that Mya did, otherwise, they may have still been outside, trying to find a way in, or they would have given up."How did you know there were
~KAHLAN AND BROOKE~ "It’s been five minutes!" Brooke shouted at me as quiet as she could when I returned to her side. She had gotten loud as if she was angry, but she was scared. She was sweating bullets, her face looking as if she had gotten caught in the rain."I know, I'm sorry," I said, "Did anyone text back?" She shook her head. "Damn it." Brooke looked at me. She wanted so badly for me to have good news for her, but I didn’t."What are we going to do?" she asked as she placed a hand over her belly. I stared down at her stomach. It was more than out lives at stake, it was the life of this unborn child. I couldn't give her an answer; so instead, I looked around, trying to come up with our next move.
~AMY, CHAD AND JASON~Jason looked, asking himself the same question. What was his problem? The fact that his friend and girlfriend lied to him… yep, that was it."I don't have a problem," Jason answered softly."Well you sure do stomp around like you do," Chad said."I'm upset," Jason replied. "I don't know how I should feel, but I know I don't hate you. Most of me misses you guys, but there is still a part of me that can't get over the fact that you two lied. And when I think about it, I can see you guys in my head, and it just makes me sick to my stomach.""Let us help you get over it," Amy said getting to her feet, "trying to avoid us and staying mad at us obviously isn't helping." Jason looke
~JUSTIN~ Everyone got to their knees outside, at the sound of another gunshot. The group was pushed back further from the school as more people escaped. Now officers had arrived on the scene. They had begun pushing everyone back across the parking lot, closer to the street and the surrounding homes. Justin couldn’t just stand around and do nothing. He was not the type to feel powerless."I have to get in there," he demanded, pushing past Carly. He didn’t even get a few feet, before he was thrown to the ground. He landed on his left knee pretty hard, feeling the pain of the pavement. He looked up and saw Coach Myers on top of him."Where do you think your going boy?" the coach growled."I ha
~KAHLAN AND CARLY~“So you have a date tonight?” Carly asked as we made our way to the front of the school. I glanced over at her as we walked down the hall. I had to stop by my locker to drop off my textbooks. We agreed that to car pool for a while. It saved time and gas money.“Its not a date.” “Yeah, but you want it to be.” She grinned. I looked over at her. It seemed that Carly might have knew more than I did. Justin and I had discussed going out together. As far as I was concerned it was just as friends. Though I wasn’t sure exactly what we were doing. Justin just said it was a birthday surprise.“Its two friends hanging out.” I responded. She looked at me. &l
~CARLY AND JUSTIN~Justin rushed through the crowds of teens pooling into the lunchroom. He was chasing one particular person down, and wanted to get to her before she reached their lunch table. He reached out and touched Carly’s shoulder, pulling her back.“Hey,” she said with a slight chuckle, his force a bit surprising. The last time she was grabbed like that, James was the one with the force. She was able to push the thought away from her mind rather quick. “What’s going on?” He seemed eager.“What do you think I should get Kahlan for her birthday?” That wasn’t a question she thought he’d ask.“Well, what do you think she wants?” She questioned, “besides you naked in a bow?”
~BROOKE AND SANDINO~ Brooke knocked on Sandino’s door. She had heard that he didn’t go to school, and figured now would be the best time to go over, since his mother would be at work. Dino opened the door, looking at her through the screen."What do you want?" he asked. She looked. So far, this was going better than expected. She didn’t even think that he would open the door, let alone speak to her."Just to talk.""I don’t want to talk. Not to you anyway.” He looked as if he had been sleeping the day away, hiding from the embarrassment that she caused."I don’t want you to hate me," she spoke out. Hate was a strong word, but if anyone was going to
~KAHLAN AND JUSTIN~ I stood at my locker, putting away my books when Justin walked up to me. I could feel his presence before I saw her. He stood behind me."Hey," he said. I turned around to look at him. We hadn't talked since what happened in my pool, and since I blurted all my thoughts and feelings at the lunch table. It seemed that our time had now come. I was ready to talk to him and it seemed that he was ready to talk to me."Hi," I said quietly."How are you?" he asked."I'm good," I answered, "You?""Not so much," He responded, putting his hands into his pockets. I looked at him. He did look a mess, as if he were losing sleep
