Serena woke up with a start, squinting at the bright light that shone directly on her face. Raising her hands to block the sunlight, she sat up straight, searching for the clock. She found it and was surprised at how late she had woken. It was almost time for breakfast. Stepping out from the bed, she glanced at her beside table, her gaze resting on the picture that was placed there. Her chest tightened as she remembered the day it was taken. Although she was smiling, her thoughts were far from happy.

Sighing softly, She stood up from the bed when she heard a knock on the door.

" Who is there?" She called out, her voice slightly hoarse. The door opened and Lana, one of her personal maids peeked in.

" It's me Ma'am." She replied.

" Come in," Serena replied as she dropped back on the bed. Lana walked in with a basket in hand, bowing slightly.

" Good morning ma'am. How was your night?"

" Hmm..." Serena murmured, shuddering as she remembered the night before. Glancing at Lana, she managed a small smile. " Why are you here?"

" The Duke calls for you. He wants you to have breakfast with him."

Her heart skipped a beat but she nodded, the smile not leaving her face.

" Okay."

" I'll prepare your bath." Lana said as she began making her way to the bathroom.

" No need..." Serena began saying but Lana had already disappeared into the bathroom. The smile disappeared the moment Serena realized she was alone and she drew a shaky breath. Balling her hands into fists, she let it out and stood up, heading towards the bathroom.

Moments later, After bathing and dressing up, Serena headed to the dining room. Descending the stairs, she could spot Gerald sitting cross legged, his face buried in the newspaper he was reading. Peering closely, she could see he was done eating. Of course, why would he wait for her?

" Good morning." She greeted when she got closer but he only mumbled a reply, not sparing her a glance. She settled down into a chair and the maids began serving her own breakfast while packing his plates.

The atmosphere was tense as neither spoke to one another, only the sounds of paper flipping and plates clinking could be heard. Serena glanced at him a couple of times and from the way he was dressed, you could tell he was going on a long of trip out of town. That wasn't suprising either.

" I'll be leaving for London today." He announced. Serena's hands froze mid air, her hands shaking lightly. Swallowing the food in her mouth, she set her spoon down. Clenching her fingers.

Even though she had guessed right, she couldn't help but feel hurt. She knew there was more to why he was leaving but she couldn't fight him for it. She swallowed, trying to keep her voice as neutral as possible.

" How long will you be there?" She asked quietly.

" Probably a week. I don't know yet." He replied. Gerald would be gone for a week. She should be happy that he's leaving the house, Serena thought to herself. But despair wrapped itself tightly around her heart, strangling it. She bit her lip, willing herself to act normal.

" Okay. Have a safe trip." She muttered and continued with her food.

Gerald stared at her then. He was expecting a reaction but as always, all he got was this usual indifference. She maintained her calm demeanour, taking her food in small bites. Wasn't she the same girl who was terrified of being intimate with? The more he watched, the irritated he became till he felt he was going to explode. Drawing in a sharp breath, he closed the newspaper and stood on his feet. The Butler appeared immediately, taking his briefcase for him.

" No farewell wishes?" He found himself asking. She glanced up at him, her face blank.

" I'll walk you out." She said, stopping him on his tracks. Gerald huffed, but continued moving.

" Don't bother." He murmured, still edgy.

" I insist. Let me walk you out." She said again. He pursed his lips, not saying anything else. His face even harder than before, he led the way while she followed. She stopped just meters away from the carriage and when he got in, waved at him, a smile on her face. Clenching his fists, he stared ahead, Grateful that the carriage was moving. She soon disappeared out of sight and that's when he breathed out, feeling relieved. Good riddance.

Blinking back tears, Serena kept the smile on till Gerald's carriage disappeared out of sight. Only then did she let her hands fall dejectedly, taking in a shaky breath. Tears blurring her vision, she stood there, lost in her thoughts. If only she could fulfil her duties as a wife. Maybe all of this won't be happening.

" Lana?" She called out and moments later, the maid appeared in front of her.

" Yes ma'am?"

" I'll be in my room and I'll pretty much appreciate it if I wasn't disturbed."

" Okay... But, what about your classes?" Lana asked worriedly.

" I won't be attending any today. Can you let the teachers know?"

" Okay Ma'am. I'll tell them."

" Thanks." She said, still staring at the empty road.

Gerald is going on no business trip. He's leaving to see his mistress, Scarlett.

.

.

.

Hours later, a soft knock was heard on her door. Serena, who was lying awake the entire time was startled by the interruption as she had instructed everyone she didn't want to be disturbed.

" Who is it?" She grumbled, uneager to get out of bed.

" It's me Lana. Gerald's mom is here." The voice announced and Serena jumped on her bed. Mother Wilson was around? That was unexpected.

" Okay... Tell her I'll be down in a minute." She said aloud as she hurriedly got dressed. Satisfied with the way she looked, she took in a deep breath and walked out of the room, looking for and finding Gerald's mom, Sarah.

The older woman beamed the moment she laid her eyes on Serena, causing her to grin. Running the last few steps, Serena engulfed her in a hug, feeling warm all over.

" Mother! You came to visit!" Serena said as she pulled away. The older woman cupped serena's cheeks as she leaned in.

" Of course... Why shouldn't I?"

" You didn't have to. I would've come visit you myself."

" No need. How are you?"

" I'm fine mother. " She replied, staring at the woman lovingly. Leading her to one of the chairs, she helped her seat as she instructed the maids to get some biscuits and a cup of tea.

" You didn't attend your classes?"

" Umm... I wasn't feeling up to it. So I decided to cancel today's classes." Serena replied.

" Where's Gerald?" Sarah asked, glancing around.

" Oh... He went back to London. Wanted to check on business there."

" London? He was back just days ago." Sarah said, rather displeased. Serena chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of her neck.

" He must love it there of he keeps going back." She muttered

" How are you going to have kids if he keeps travelling? That boy...." Sarah muttered. The maid arrived with the biscuits, interrupting Sarah. Serving Sarah the cup of tea, she bowed and left. Silence descended until Serena spoke up.

" Mother, if you came to see Gerald, he isn't here."

" Well, I did come to see him. But I also came to see you." Sarah announced and Serena sat up straight, a bit cautious. " I hope everything is alright between you and him."

" Of course... Should something be wrong?"

" Well, I don't know... Gerald can be quite tough sometimes. But as long as you're doing your duties, you'll be fine. Plus, you're very beautiful and well behaved. No one could possibly resist you"

Of course, no one can, Serena thought rather sadly. Smiling at the older woman, Serena tried to keep the painful thoughts down. " Thanks mother. " She muttered.

" That's it. That's all I came to say. I have to go now." Sarah said, standing up.

" So quick? Why don't you wait a little longer?" Serena asked, standing up too.

" I wish I could, but I can't. I don't really enjoy the silence of this big house." Walking over to Serena, she hugged her." I hope the next time I come, it's to see you with a grandchild." She whispered and Serena stiffened for a moment. Sarah pulled away, turning to leave. She stopped, turning back to Serena.

" One more thing dear, can you tell Gerald to see me once he comes back?"

" Of course. I'll do just that."

" Thanks love."

Serena watched her leave before running her hands through her hair in frustration.

How is she supposed to do that if she can't even do what leads to having grandkids!?

Her eyes clamped shut and sweat dripping from her forehead, it was obvious she was enjoying it. Way too much." Oh God... I'm coming... I'm cumm..." she didn't get to finish her sentence as she groaned aloud, her body spasming, jerking uncontrollably. Gerald continued for a few more moments and pulled out just in time to have his release on the bed. Scarlett lay slumped on the bed, unduly satisfied. Staring at Gerald with lazy eyes, her face broke in to a grin." I missed you so much." She muttered, her voice dripping with satisfaction.Gerald shrugged, breathing heavily as he arranged his clothes. He had come here to release all the pent up energy he had stored after Serena's rejection. So, he couldn't really say he missed her. He realized Scarlett was still talking and gave her his full attention." Can't believe you s

Silence was the order of the day as they settled to have their dinner. Thick, unbreaking silence. Serena had stopped crying a while ago and she looked calm and collected. Gerald on the other hand couldn't say that about himself. He couldn't shake off the previous guilt he felt, no matter how hard he tried. He glanced at her as she ate, noticing she barely ate anything, just picking on her food. Beyond her calm exterior, he could see how tense she was. She definitely didn't like being around him. " I'm sorry…" he mumbled, half wishing she didn't hear what he said. He glanced at her and she was staring at him, her eyes slightly widened. She caught herself in time, rapidly shaking her head. " It's okay. I shouldn't have bothered you." " No it's not. How can you say it's okay? I should not have have treated you like that." He continued, stil

" What!?" Serena muttered, her voice faint. She glanced at him but he just looked at her, the grim expression on his face. With blurry eyes, she turned to the papers. It's true, she thought as her heart kept breaking. Gerald does want to divorce her. " Why?" She asked, her voice barely a whisper. Swallowing, she tried again. " Did I do anything wrong?" Gerald shifted in his sit but he looked at her. " We both know this isn't working. We're both not ready for it." " But it's never something we can't work out." She stressed. " Well, I don't think we can." Gerald muttered with a note of finality. " It'll be much better if we divorce now before things get messy." Serena took in a shaky breath, cleaning off a stray tear. " Does your mother know about this?" She asked and Gerald stiffened. " What has she got do with this?"

He couldn't believe he was listening to this. " This is most absurd thing I've ever heard. I can't believe I'm listening to you." Serena smiled, her chin raised. Her eyes sparkled as she spoke the next words. " I know you're attracted to me, you deny it but it's there. I plan to use it to my advantage." " What if it doesn't work?" Gerald found himself asking. (Six months later) Serena stood outside the church doors, staring longingly at it, a smile on her face. It had been there all morning and though she knew her cheeks were probably hurting from when it faded, she knew it won't be happening anytime soon. This is the happiest day of her life. Beside her was Clara, whose arms was intertwined with her, a smile on her face as well but it was more gentle. She reached up to pull the veil over her face, shielding her vision. " Nervous?" Clara asked. Serena nodded, unable to help herself. Yes, she was nervous but she was also giddy with excitement. " Don't be." Clara whispered, going on to hold her hands. The chorus soon came and it was time to walk into the church. Serena took in a deep breath, letting it out slowly. She let Clara pull her along and she followed, falling into steps with her. They soon entered the chapel and everyone eyes turned on them. Serena's hands gripped Clara's hands tightly even as her gaze settled on Gerald, who wa

The past few seconds was the most horrifying seconds of his life as Gerald stood in the room, watching as they tried to resuscitate Serena. He'd broken into the room at the sounds of their yells, disregarding everyone that tried to hold him back. It felt like a nightmare. A terrible nightmare. One that made his blood run cold and terror climb up his spine. He stood there, his eyes fixed on a pale-skined Serena, the same words repeating in his head, over and over again. Don't let it be! Please, don't let it be!! A long time passed before the mid-wife came with the reply that she was conscious again. But he still stood there frozen, imagining the worst. His eyes blurred with tears and body trembling. When the words finally sank in, he turned to the mid-wife who flinched on seeing the expression on his face. He glanced at Serena who eyes opened tiredly, color returning back to her cheeks. He ignored whatever the mid-wife was saying, marching up to Serena. Her dazed ey

The second Gerald walked into the mid-wife home, he immediately began asking for Serena, his eyes searching frantically for her. The women in the room restricted him from going further and kept telling him to him go back. Their noises and arguments forced the mid- wife out of the room she was in, wondering what was causing the commotion. She paused when she saw the strangers in the room. Clara saw the woman and immediately rushed to her, asking for Serena's health. " Not good," The woman told her and Clara's hands flwe to her mouth, stifling a gasp. " She's having complications wen we've just discovered the baby might be a breech baby. " She told Clara and watched at the color drain from her face, blanketed with horror. Gerald was there and he heard what they said. Shock was his first reaction and he stiffened all over. When the meaning of the words finally sank in, he turned to the mid-wife, rage in his eyes. Gerald finally arrived at Araith, he watched as the trees whizzed by, his heart light and racing in excitement for the first time in months. He was going to see Serena again, the knowledge wouldn't stop replaying in his head over again, his lips curled into a smile. He didn't try to brush it off. He intentionally didn't write when he'll be coming in his recent letters because he meant it to be a surprise. He imagined what kind of look she would have on his face and his smile only grew wider. He probably looks stupid now. He was already free from the responsibilities of being a Duke and now a regular person with a way too much money. That didn't matter now, all that mattered was seeing Serena again. Slightly impatient, he watched as the carriage rode till it got to her house. He sat up straight, It was so small, a huge contrast to the cold mansion he'd been living in. But he was the happiest here. Getting down from the carriage, he paid the driver his fees. The driver bo

While he worked that day, he had a smile on his face. He decided later on, he'll be sending her a letter.... Serena decided to tell Clara the good news. (Four months later) Months went by and Serena never told Gerald about her pregnancy. Though she receives his letters and occasionally writes back to him, she hasn't found the courage to write that she's with a child. That, more than anything made her worried. The questions wouldn't stop running around her head. What if he stops caring? Or he hates her for it? She couldn't bear the thought. On the flip side, as the baby grew inside her, she found herself loving it. Her worry and initial fear for being pregnant had dissolved to reveal the joy that was contact on her face. Occasionally she got stares and murmurs from people around her for being pregnant and not having a husband nearby. She didn't let those words get to her as she focused on herself and the baby. She couldn't wait to have the baby in her arms and hoped to God that gerald would e happy about it. One day, Clara asked if she had already told Gerald about the pregnancy. She's pregnant, the words were a little too hard to believe. The doctor already confirmed it. She could still remember the shock she felt when he told her how far long she had gone. She's six weeks pregnant. Sinking to the ground, Serena wrapped her hands around herself, feeling cold all of a sudden. It was still so hard to believe. She bit her lips, the fear and dread threatening to cosume her. It made her unable to feel the happiness that came with such news. " There's nothing wrong with being pregnant. You're going to be fine." Serena whispered to herself, trying to sound positive. Instead, her throat closed up and she began crying instead. Any elation she has in her heart had died with this information. Now, she was just scared. Scared out of her mind. She didn't know if this was good news or not. She didn't know if she should tell Gerald or keep it to herself. She knew she couldn't, they were all going to find out sooner or later. The unknown was threatening to drive her crazy.

Still, she tried to work like before, ignoring the way her body protests all the time. Part of what made her push through was the letters she receives from Gerald on a weekly basis. They never hesitated to put a smile on her face and she found herself anticipating his return. Today, she had visited Clara to spend some time with her. She found it hard to concentrate in their conversations as she kept stifling yawns and zoning out. Clara eventually noticed and decided to ask her about it. " Dear, are you okay? This is the third time you'll be yawning in the past minute." She called out gently, genuinely worried. Serena glanced at her, a small smile on her face. But her eyes look tired.
