CAMILLA'S POV

The bar was in twilight, heavy with the smell of ages of whiskey and cigar smoke. The low murmurs of conversations and clinking glasses alike seemed to fade into the background, my attention was on Dante and Rocco - they sat at a corner table, but a single lamp cast sharp shadows across their faces.

The tension between them was palpable from my seat: Dante hunched forward, his knuckles grazing the table; Rocco leaned back, his face impassive, save for the gleam of ice in his eyes.

I sipped my wine slowly, the coolness of the glass a balm against the palm of my hand, but doing little to settle the queasy twist of my belly. Next to me, Annie seemed placid, but I noticed how her fingers gripped the stem of her glass just that little bit too tightly.

“Why do they always look like they're about to kill each other?" I asked, trying to sound light.

Annie smirked. "You're witnessing history in the making. Rocco doesn't listen to anyone-except me, sometimes. If he's even conside

CAMILLA'S POVI heard the sharp shatter of glass as the room froze in place; it was as if the air formed into ice. My pulse thundered in my chest as instinctively, I pulled Annie's arm back from this stumbling man and his predicted random movements. He sneered, his frame unsteadily swaying, but a dangerous mixture of arrogance and intoxication gleamed in his eyes. The scrape of a chair leg across the floor cut through the silence before I could get another word out. I whirled to see Dante storming toward us, an expression blacker than I'd ever seen on his face. Every step he took was deliberate, as if some sort of predator closing in on his prey."Dante…" I started, but the words died in my throat. In an instant, he was beside us, his towering figure completely blocking me from the man's line of vision. "What the hell do you think you are doing?" Dante said in a low, controlled voice full of threat. The man was either utterly unaware of the serious peril he found himself in or simply

DANTE'S POVThe door softly shut behind us, nestling us into the silence of the hotel room. There was still friction from tonight hanging in the air, but at least some of the weight was off my shoulders at any rate. It was huge, and Rocco agreeing to go to Chicago was just a major first hurdle of many different obstacles going forward. Twenty years of hate and all the reasons that it had created were never going to get solved overnight.Camilla stood at the window, staring out at the Italian city below, where the lights sparked on like diamonds in a polished velvet case. That soft glow came alive in her silhouette, and for a moment, I simply looked at her. There was something about Camilla where convoluted situations seemed doable. She muttered to herself, in the otherwise silent room: "I just can't believe it. Rocco actually agreed to meet your father. It is not real."I crossed the room, leaning against the edge of the bed and folding my arms as I watched her. "Wouldn't have happene

Dante's POVCamilla's questions and suspicions grew thicker as we rode to the animal shelter."Where exactly are we going?" She crossed her arms over her chest as she stared at me. "What are you up to, Dante?"I smirked, my eyes never once leaving the road ahead of me. "You'll see soon enough."She frowned, her brow furrowed, and grumbled, "I don't like surprises. Especially your surprises."I laughed, really impressed with how well she knew me already. "Trust me, you'll love this one.”We pulled in, I stopped the engine and climbed out, opening her door with a flourish. She hesitated immediately, her eyes flying to the building."An animal shelter? You have got to be kidding me?" she asked, dumbfounded, maybe a little bit fearful.I nodded, unable to hide the grin. "You've been talking about a pet for weeks. I figured we'd take a look."Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. "Dante, you know I'm not great with animals, especially dogs. Talking about them doesn't mean I want them around.” "

Camilla's POVDante teased my naked body under the shower and I was already on edge, waiting for him to take me. “Fuck Dante. Will just take me already.” I finally let out.He let out a chuckle. He was enjoying every bit of my frustration. “You have to beg, Camilla.” He said with his hands nibbling on both my nipples and his mouth sucking hard on my neck. I got annoyed and pushed him away. “You're evil.” He almost slipped but he steadied himself with the bathroom walls and laughed out hard. Before I could grab my towel, he pulled me back and pin my front to the wall, my breast collided with the cold wall of the bathroom. “Where do you think you are going?” he began to feast on my neck again. “Dante, stop it.” He came out more as a moan than a protest. “This is torture.” “Stop being stubborn and beg Camilla” his hands were already in between my thighs, spreading my legs. I wasn't going to beg him, I planned to be adamant till he gave up.Without warning, he slipped two fingers i

Camilla's POVI sat up in bed, and my breathing was fast and shallow. My hands were knotted in the sheets, yanking them as though somehow the friction could steady me. The images flashing through my mind a second before were sharp, crystal clear. No, it wasn't just a dream. A memory of some dark leftover of my past life. Tom had spoken in a very low, threatening whisper in my dream, commanding his men to hijack that crimson shipment. The room had been lowly lit, thick with tension, and smoke in the air; the way he spoke, his words were weighted as they settled deep in my chest even now.I sat up in bed, the realization hitting me like a punch to the gut. It wasn’t just a random memory resurfacing—it was a warning. Today was the day. Dante’s shipment of the crimson drug, the same one I’d overheard Tom plotting to hijack, was happening today.Throwing my legs over the side of the bed, I sat, the racing of my heart drumming in my ears as I tried to think. I couldn't tell Dante the truth

Red drug-sized crates going onto unmarked trucks, all rather well-planned.Anthony stood beside me, crossing his arms as sharp eyes scanned the view. "All clear, ma'am," he said. "Nothing out of order."I nodded, my lips pressed tight, but the knot in my stomach wouldn't untie. "Keep watching. I don't trust this."Anthony turned to me, his face wary. "Ma'am, are you sure there is something to be concerned about? Mr. Draven has done this a hundred times. He knows how to handle things like this.""He doesn't know everything," I said under my breath, for my ears more than anything.Anthony merely raised an eyebrow and said nothing. . CAMILLA’S POVAnger brewed in Dante's storm, it was beyond darkening skies. Of course, it was in his eyes, all afire, and also in his stance-broad shoulders tense, fists clenched at his sides, as though physically holding himself from an explosion. Every single nerve in my body seemed to burn with anticipation of the inevitable impact of his anger against the truth so about to be laid bare."Where were you when all this was happening?" Dante's voice was low and modulated, but the menace behind wasn't to be mistaken. His words rumbled into the room as he took a step closer to Anthony, who seemed stuck in place, a bead of sweat rolling down his temple.Mumbling, Anthony's voice broke beneath the dead weight of Dante's glare. "I-I was-"Don't stutter!" Dante snapped, the edge of his voice slicing through the air. My body jerked at the sharpness of it. "Answer me!""I'm sorry, Boss. Her steely resolve faltered to tears glistening in her eyes."What did you just call me?" shaking she whispered "Mom? Do...do you know me?"I swallowed hard, my stomach twisted up with nerves. "Yes, I know you," I said, and I could barely keep the shaking out of my voice. "I grew up seeing your picture in my parent's house. They told me you were my biological mother… but that my father, John, killed you. I—I thought you were dead.”“Who were the parents who raised you?” she questioned with a stern expression.“Your brother, Benson, and his wife, Olivia.” Carol's face crumpled, and the sight caught at my chest. She shook as she extended her hands toward me. "Camilla…my daughter. I—I had no idea.""Mom," I whispered. Dante's POVThe air hung heavy in the room. Ella sat on the ground at the center of the dimly lit basement, her face a mask of defiance though bruises colored her pale skin. I was leaning casually against the table with Ella's phone in my hand, observing her."You're going to prove stubborn to the end, aren't you?" I said icily. She sneered, her swollen lip curling in defiance. "You'll get nothing from me, Dante."Alex was leaning against the doorframe, his arms folded over his chest as he regarded Ella. "We've tried every method. She's either too loyal or too scared."I clenched my fist. The image of Anthony pulling strings behind her seemed seared into my brain. "Or both," I muttered. The phone buzzed on the desk, and I sprang up, and picked it up-the flashing unknown number danced across the screen. Alex took another step closer, taut."Answer it," he said.I nodded and took it to my ear but didn't say anything. The other line was silent too. And then I just waited. The silence hun

Camilla's POV"Dante, you need to sit down for this," Alex said. His voice came out measured, and I could feel the weight of it. Even Dante's eyes seemed to fill with tension though he leaned against the pillows, he looked much better than this morning, but the body still wasn't up and working just yet.I sat on the edge of the chair beside him, watching as the flicker of every emotion crossed his face. My heart could be pounding against my chest, and I wasn't about to show evidence of it."What's wrong?" Dante asked more like jabbed.Alex gave a quick glance my way before he turned back to him. "Ella faked her pregnancy."His face contorted further, a scrunched-up mess as his gaze soured into an accusing scowl. "What?”"She bribed the doctors," I said. "Also the one that diagnosed and confirmed your condition the first time, the doctor knew about the poisoning but gave us a wrong diagnosis on purpose.” The silent seconds ticked over before Dante's hands actually fisted. Do you want to back up?” I bit my lip, my fingers dancing on the wheel. "No. Go back home and keep an eye on Dante. It's something I need to deal with myself. Weeks of suspicious behavior on Ella's part had set warning bells ringing in my mind, and today I was going to finally confirm what my gut had been screaming at me all along.I pulled my coat tighter against the biting cold and stepped out of the car. The air was sharp, that kind of chill that burrowed deep in your bones, but I didn't notice. My attention was razor-sharp as I walked briskly across the parking lot and into the warm, sterile lobby of the hospital.Keep your head down. A bit of blood trickled from between his lips and onto his palm and down his hand, spilling onto the sheets. My heart boomed in my chest loud enough to block everything else."Dante!" I shrieked, scrambling onto the bed beside him. "What's going on?”His head swung once in a poor attempt at shaking. "I. I don't know," he spoke in low tones.I grabbed a towel, pressing it to his mouth in hopes of halting the stream of blood while my hands violently shook. "Don't speak. Just breathe. I'm going to call Alex," I said, reaching for my phone. It rang once, and then Alex answered."Camilla? What's going on?""Get here! Now!" I ordered. "Get a doctor, the one that knows what he's doing. "I just need some sleep, Camilla. That's all.""No, it's not," I said, laying a hand on his forehead. He wasn't warm, but his skin felt clammy. "You have been pushing yourself too hard. You look sick, you are going to see the doctor.""I'm fine," he muttered, waving me off. “I don't fall sick.”"Dante, stop being stubborn," I snapped. "If you're fine, then just humor me. Camilla's POVThe chill of the night leaned against my skin as I watched Dante's car and a few other cars following him disappear into the distance. Something wasn't quite right with it; it sat in my belly like a weight of bad news. The gestures had been measured, urgent-unnatural. Dante just wasn't one to go off without a scheme in his pocket, and experience told me his schemes came with danger clinging to them like an over-attached lover.I slid into my car, grasping the wheel. "What are you up to now, Dante?" I muttered under my breath.I hung back, careful to stay several car lengths behind. The road opened up before me, twisting and turning into a secluded area. My headlight was off, guided by the dim light of their tail lights.A place where they had stopped gave me the heebie-jeebies; it was dark, isolated, and quiet except for the rustling of leaves in the wind. I could feel my pulse as I drove a distance away and got out of the car.I dropped into a crouch, quiet, and made my

I answered immediately. "Anthony," I said smoothly, careful that the eagerness didn't leak into my voice. "What a surprise."His voice came through sharp and urgent, and for once betrayed his façade of calm. "Ella, how are things going? Has there been any progress?"I let a small, appeasing smile slide onto my face as my eyes strayed to the window where, below me, sprawled the estate. Dante's empire was heady to look upon, and for the first time, I was inside. Well, it had taken years of planning. "It couldn't go any better," I replied, my tone airy but edgy. "I have gotten closer to Dante, and he has started trusting me again.”"And Camilla?" H
