Apology

<< . Riley . >>

Dimitri walks away, and a praise is on the tip of my tongue.

But thank goodness I don’t say anything. Because Mikolaj is giving me the same look he gave at Neon Oasis VIP restroom that night.

Now what? Can’t I even talk to people?

“What the hell is your problem?” I ask.

“Why would I have a problem?” he says, his voice laced with irritation. He presses his phone to his ear, then walks into the house.

I scoff. Judgemental jerk. He has no right to judge or dictate me. I am not his servant.

And I am sure he used the phone to avoid the confrontation. I feel victorious. I shouldn’t let this slide.

I look back at Jessica. She is picking up tiny flower pots and arranging them as she likes.

“Hey! Jessica! Wanna play hide and seek?”

“YES!” she says.

“Go Hide! Go Go!”

She giggles and runs inside the house.

“That was easy,” I mutter.

I cannot talk to Mikolaj while playing with her, so I play a trick. I pretend to search for barely a minute, then I catch her.

    31. Open house >I step out of the cab and gaze up at the towering buildings. I am in downtown to meet Mom and Dad. It’s been several months since I’ve seen my parents, and I can’t wait to catch up with them. Dad had some work and conveniently the cafe they chose is near Josef corporation highrise. I make my way towards the cafe, weaving through the crowds of people rushing to their jobs. I freaking hope I don’t bump into someone from the office. Not that I know many of them. But on a bad day, anything can happen.Oh Wait. It’s Saturday. I don’t need to worry.I look around, and a huge grin spread across my face when I see mom. She is wearing in a casual jeans with a thin sweater. I snort. At least there is someone who feels winter is coming.I rush over to her, engulfing her in a hug.“Riley, it’s so good to see you!” my mom exclaims, hugging me back tightly and a sense of warmth spreads across my chest.“Where is Dad?” I ask and pull away and take a seat next to her.

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   32. Abomination

Abomination>Dad looks at me expectedly and I swallow hard. It wouldn’t create a problem. Right? “It’s-its a,” I stammer, as I weigh the pros and cons of so-called breach of contract. How will I explain that Mikolaj wants it a secret? The car door opens, and mom hops into the driving seat.“Oh Fuck Garrett. We are not buying this cursed house. Give me the key.”Wait what?“What happened?” Dad asks. She turns, her expression is bewildered.“I asked the agent to show me the basement-” She shakes her head. “I am sure I saw a Devil’s door.”I stare at her, confused. Then it clicks and I sigh.Mom is superstitious as hell. It’s super easy to spook her. “Mom! Relax.” I squeeze her shoulder. Dad gets out and opens her door. “You are not driving like this.”Mom nods and they swap seats. The listing agent comes out, and Mom snaps at him. “Sell your haunted house somewhere else. I’m not buying this Conjuring theme house.““There goes an option I liked,” Dad mutters as he

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   33. Kiss

    33. Kiss>This is not the first time she has called me out for lack of empathy. When it comes to her, I cannot help it.It’s been a long time since I thought of Lena. Yes, Riley is a striking image of her. But do I see her when Riley is around? No.I stopped making associations between them long ago. I never would have offered her the job if I hadn’t. But the sight of Riley in my kitchen put a sour taste in my mouth today. It reminded me it was a bad idea to let her mingle with Jessica. A mistake. Even worse... She has been creating a constant simmering urge inside me. An urge that seems wrong for every reason.Forbidden fruit is the sweetest. Maybe that’s why I’m losing my restraint. Her gaze meets mine as she inhales deeply. I let her arm go, giving her a chance to step back. To save herself. I expect her to flee. But little Riley has other plans. She stays rooted in her spot, mere inches away from me, and I know I am not alone in this.As I inhale her captivati

    34. Pierogies, Games, and Jealousy.>- 21 Years ago -As we walk home from school, I can feel the excitement building inside of me. Lena is eager to meet Mom and Maria. Garrett is interested to see the car dad bought a week ago.I am just happy that I will get some time to spend with them.“Miko!” Lena looks at me with a twinkle in her eye and asks, “Can we take that car for a spin?”It’s a Renault Clio V6.I chuckle. “Well, it’s not my car. So No.”She rolls her eyes and I add, “I hope it would be at home or you would be so disappointed… Because Antoni takes it for a drive sometimes. Her shoulder slump, and Garrett holds her by the waist.“Don’t Worry. I can take you out for a spin,” he murmurs in her ear, and I look away.….We walk and talk away, shooting questions to each other in between. Conversation somehow falls at our choices of college next year. Lena laments about the fact that she can’t leave the city because financially her family cannot afford that.

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   35. Power Imbalance

    35. Power Imbalance >Riley runs out and it takes me a few moments to get a grip of myself. It’s Jonas’ call that distracts me at last.“Hey Miko… I have picked up Camilla.”“Bring her here. I am not ready yet,” I say as I walk out of study to check on Jessie. I’m not sure if Riley ran out of the house. She looked determined enough.“ummm okay… She is not gonna like it.” He chuckles.“She doesn’t have much choice now… Does she?” I say, distracted as I see Riley’s purse lying in a corner while Jessie is surprisingly calm, engaged in herself. That’s good. Riley is around. I can take a bath in peace.“I, of course, don’t have any choice, Miko!” Camilla’s voice chimes in and I rub my face. Here we go. Was the phone on speaker? I think it was.Camilla is keen to start her own business. She has refused to accept help from the Josef corporation. A few Investors she met so far were pricks and sexist. So Patterson convinced her to attend this party with me. It will deter oth

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   36. Slave

    36. Slave“You are quiet.” Jonas says, munching on cashews he offered me a while ago. “I’m bored….“ and outraged. Mikolaj and Camilla left a while ago, and I am still fuming in anger. He slipped his arm around her waist, just to agitate me.He can judge me for talking with Dimitri. He can give me degrading glares because he thought I had made out with a bartender. But he can whore around with anyone he wants. The audacity. If Camilla is his girlfriend, should I rat him out? Would Camilla believe me? What if she kicks me out of this job for kissing him?Not that she can... I made sure it’s super difficult to fire me. Thanks Dad for teaching me that much.Jonas pauses the tv, and fixes his gaze at me. “You said he fired you. What happened?”Jessica whines, annoyed at the interruption of her entertainment.“I have seen this stupid movie at least ten times, Jessie,” he says and resumes the movie. We are watching ‘Frozen’. We have little choice when a 2.5-year-old is watching TV with us.

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   37. Smoke

    37. Smoke > Riley scurries behind Jonas, and I walk towards the balcony to pick up my ringing phone. I can’t believe him. Like father, Like son. Never missing the chance to annoy me. “Where we going?” Jessica asks, looking around in my lap. “To see city lights…” I point. “from the balcony… Would you like that?” I ask her, and she nods. Great. I need some privacy to pick up Antoni’s call. He knows I don’t like to talk to him during public appearances. So it better be urgent. “Antoni.” “I have found the boy’s name for you.” I chuckle. During our meeting, we struggled to figure out the hierarchy of the gang Antoni wants eliminated. So I guess he has called me in excitement. “Alright. You could have emailed me.” So it turns out a few years ago, a local thug went global. His name is Borris. Pretty ballsy move, to be honest. He sent his son, Maxim, to Moscow to establish the chain of supply into the USA. We are not clear what his main business is. Antoni insists he

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   38. Control

    38. Control >High-end hotels prioritize customer privacy. If someone is cheating on their significant other or doing shady deals, they won’t like to be captured on cameras. This is why Beverly Hills Hotel doesn’t have CCTV inside the premises. That’s one point in my favor.I knock on the door of 904, and a gruff voice asks through the intercom. “Who is it?”The suites are usually sound proof. Even a person roaring behind the door cannot be heard. That’s one more point in my favor.“It’s Mikolaj,” I say as I remove my jacket.Suits are terrible for mobility. All those movies we watch where men fight in suits. Fuckin unreasonable. James Bond would be dead in a day if he fought in suits. “What the fuck do you want?”Someone is still bitter. “I would like to apologize, Victor. I was wrong to dismiss you so quickly. I am here to make an offer.”He chuckles and unlocks the door. People are always eager to see others grovel, and this is gonna cost him.The door creaks ope

. - Riley - .“Lie down with me?”Mikolaj nods and pulls out his phone, typing a quick message. I watch him, feeling an odd tightness in my chest that I can’t quite understand. When he finally tucks his phone away and lies beside me, I turn onto my side to face him. It’s then I notice the slight hitch in his breathing, each breath rough and uneven, his face etched with lines of pain.“How bad are your injuries? Your liver?”“It’s fine. She was creating a fuss for no reason,” he says with an air of annoyance towards the stern lady. “My ribs are still a mystery. We will know more after x-ray.” His voice trails off, and I glance up at him, raising a brow.“And…?”“Nothing serious. I’m hoping it’s just a hairline fracture, not a full break…”“Sounds awful.”“Not that bad, trust me. I am just worried about how I will handle Jessie jumping around in bed.”I go quiet when I hear Jessie’s name. How things will be when I get back to my life. West could try to kidnap me again, or Maxim. Would I

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   112. Test

. - Riley - .As they wheel through a dimly lit hallway, lethargy and dull pain wash over me like a heavy blanket. My back aches, my left arm throbs, and there’s something digging into my neck that’s becoming increasingly annoying. The stretcher carrying Miko pulls away from me and he protests, “Take us to the same room!”“No…” the medic who tended to us in the chopper says pointedly.“Oh, for fuck’s sake, it’s not a hospital!” Mikolaj snaps at her.“Our commitment to our work rivals that of an emergency room.” She claps back in a mockingly professional tone and I am wondering if I should laugh or be wary of her statement. “Plus, do you want to die of internal injuries?”“Yeah man… We need to make sure the person paying us doesn’t drop dead,” the guy with the dislocated shoulder croaks, eliciting a round of chuckles from the others. “I feel fine,” Miko mutters, sulking.“She needs some privacy, and you need an ultrasound.” With that, she rushes into a room with the man who has a bull

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   111. Ride

Ride. - Mikolaj - .“All clear.” The Merce ahead of me says after a quick sweep of the room. A brief glance behind tells me the man limping along with me is losing his strength. “Stay here and make sure no one comes from behind,” I tell him. We both know it’s unlikely—everyone in this building is either dead or incapacitated. Still, I would rather he conserve his energy than exhaust himself before the mission is over. We’re not safe until we’re out.“How is it going?” Raylan asks over my ear piece and I grunt.“Not sure if she is here,” I reply, keeping my focus on the bodies lying down. My urge to drill another bullet in each of their heads is strong, but there’s no point in disrespecting the dead, especially when it would invite more legal complications than we already have.“Fuck.”My heart hammers in my chest as I ask, “What?”“Yours is the only team having some action. Rest of the sites were… Not the one,” he says with a slight pause.Based on the analysis of the sunlight and

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   110. Rescue

    110. Rescue . - Riley - . My hands tremble as I grab the door handle and pull. It doesn’t budge. Did West come back, or is it just the seven of us under attack? A small part of me wonders if it's the police. I have no choice but to wait and watch my luck unfold. So I do that. I sink in a corner and flinch with each gunshot. Rapid sharp cracks make my heart jump as I realize someone is firing an automatic rifle. This can't be a rescue mission. Considering the chaos outside I will definitely die before the night ends. Chewing on my lips, I glance towards the bathroom and consider. I should try 911 again. My legs are weak beneath me as I tiptoe inside and lift the lid off the toilet tank. I reach in and feel the cold plastic of the phone. Next, I go to the mattress and lift the edge just enough to grab the folded piece of tissue that hides the unused pregnancy test. I shove the test into my pocket, promising myself If I survive this night, first thing I will do is take the test. My

. - Riley - .Thankfully, I am already on the move to put the toilet tank lid back on when Scarlett slams the door open.“What did you do?” she demands.“One of them grabbed me… I- I just reacted,” I say, reaching to flush, praying that the flimsy plastic bag somehow saves the phone. She nods, her expression unreadable as she turns on her heel. “Come with me.”Her silence makes my heart thump and I follow her down the hallway, my mind racing. “Scar?” I ask in a small voice.“You could have come to me!” she snaps. “Reed is trying to seal a deal with them, and the man you attacked is someone important.” She is quiet for a moment, breathing hard as she asks, “Seriously, tell me, are you seeking trouble for no reason?”“I am NOT!” I defend myself, my anger rising. How could she say that to me? “He was groping me. What am I supposed to do? Let him feel me?” “As long as he is not screwing you without payment, I don’t see a problem. Get down on your high horse and focus on keeping your head

  • Ruining My Enemy's Daughter   108. To-Do

. - Riley - .As West locks the door from outside, I turn and my eyes meet the stare of security camera, its red blinking light taunting me. Is Mikolaj really watching or is West just playing mind games? Doesn’t matter. I am pissed at both of them. West kidnapped me, but Mikolaj... He literally forced me to live with him so I would be miserable.“Does my misery make you delighted, Mr. Josef?” Slight shake of my head I add, “I fucking hate you… Hate that you used me to get your stupid revenge.” I know he cannot hear me, but if he could, would he even care? Turning on my heel, I stroll into the bathroom. As my hand grips the cold knob, the rage drains away, leaving the hollow ache. My emotions are a chaotic mess, bouncing between hurt and fury. I should blame the sex party West forced me to stay in. The atmosphere of lust and excess made my eyes bleed. Figuratively. Then he had the nerve to ask for a kiss. And the worst part… First thought that crossed my mind was how Mikolaj would re

Deal. - Mikolaj - .“They will try to squeeze you dry, Miko. This 10k stunt was just to put you at ease with the idea of spending money. I know you’re stressed, and this is why you need to consult others before spending any more money,” Raylan says as he pulls over in front of Camilla’s house. Apparently, paparazzi are still lingering around my house, hence Camilla brought her here.“I will also look for an expert who can advise us on negotiations. If they contact during the night—which we both know is highly unlikely—ask me or Camilla first. Don’t decide anything alone.”I’m too exhausted to show my annoyance. So I simply nod and grab my bag to walk inside. House is dark with a dim glow pouring from the laptop on dining table. Camilla is sitting there, clenching a tissue in her fist.“Camilla?” She closes the laptop and straightens her back.“Took you a while…” she asks in a strange voice.“Yea,” I reply, my eyes searching her face. She seems somewhere between upset and composed.“I

Since the website Jacob told me about is inaccessible, I am hoping to find some answers here. “I-I meant no offense.”The door knocks and Camilla’s voice comes through. “Are you guys in there?” Raylan lets her in and her eyes widen, seeing Victor. “Where the fuck are your clothes?” Then she frowns, her eyes searching for something. “

Party of sorts - 2. - . Riley . - .I had asked West last night if he had contacted anyone, but he didn’t spit out a word either.“Why are you here, Tank? Do you need something?” Scar says as before I can ask Tank anything.“A blow job,” he says with a twinkle in his eyes. I know he is talking to Scarlet, but his fixed gaze at me pisses me off beyond no explanation.“Try that and I will bite it off. Then maybe shove it in your mouth,” I grit through my teeth. His face contorts with anger as he strides towards me. Scarlett rushes between us, creating a barrier while my fingers twitch to grab the knife on the counter behind me.“West won’t be happy if you create a mess in here.”“He isn’t my fuckin boss.” He snarls.“Even others won’t be happy. This is an important meeting, Tank. Please… Calm down.”With a jerk, he grabs Scarlet’s hand and backs away. “Join us for the party or die in the kitchen, but you cannot leave this area until the party is over.”“I was looking forward to attend
