Rune
About A Month Later
Rubbing my hands over my temples, I tried to block out the din surrounding me, the strobing lights hurting my eyes, but I’d promised my friend I would come out tonight while the kids were at their sleepovers for the weekend.
The nightclub, Verve, had different colored strobe lights to complement the loud music, and thrashing bodies filled the dancefloor to the brim, all moving to the hypnotic beat that was pumping through the numerous speakers that I’d seen spaced strategically around the large open area.
Sliding down from the bar stool as I kept a hand at the hem of my dress, worried about the too-short skirt riding up any further, I was regretting my moment of weakness de novo.
I was feeling self-conscious with the clothes I’d let my friend pick out for me, trusting her to dress me appropriately for the unfamiliar venue, and the makeup wasn’t helping anything either, the bold colors making me stand out when I would much rather blend in with my surroundings.
I’d never seen the point in bothering to learn how to put the shit on, much preferring to use that extra time in the morning to sleep in. Plus, who had money for stuff like that anyway?
She’d gone overboard with applying it, and the bright red lipstick she’d selected was difficult to forget about as traces of it was left stuck to the glass that I was sipping my Coke out of, though it was rum and Coke for all Kira knew.
Not to mention, the little black number I presently had on was courtesy of Kira too, or Kiki as she insisted on being called. Still, I wasn’t naïve enough to believe she’d simply had this dress laying around collecting dust.
We’d been best friends since kindergarten, but our body shapes were vastly different. I was a skinny, white girl without much in the way of curves, but Kiki was African American and was considerably more blessed in certain departments than I was.
I hated the idea of her spending her money on me to buy this dress and the makeup that matched my own lighter skin tone, and I tried to tell her I would pay her back again as she led me towards the dance floor.
Cutting me off as she spun in place, she leaned in to yell in my ear so I could hear over the sound of the thumping bass from the stereo, “I already told you to forget about it. If you need to do something to make yourself feel better, then dance with me! You never come out, and you need to loosen up, maybe get laid tonight.”
She’d said the last part as she pulled back, shooting me a conspiratorial look as a saucy smile lit up her features.
“Kiki!” I shrieked, glancing around to see if anyone had heard her, but the music drowned out the relative murmur of our voices.
I registered the comical look in her emerald orbs, but she only rolled her eyes at my protest as she went on, “It’s been over a month since you kicked Damien’s sorry ass to the curb, and I know you weren’t sleeping with him for months prior to that. You can’t forget about yourself while trying to rescue everyone else, Rune.”
Her unusually profound words took a minute to sink in, even if she was wrong about how long it’d been since I’d been intimate with anyone, the length of time extending much further than she’d assumed.
Jostling bodies bumped into us as the dancefloor swelled to envelop us, the tension dispersing as the beat did its thing, working its way through our bodies.
Kiki was a party animal as far as I was concerned, and too irresponsible for my tastes most times, but she’d been by my side through all the pain and suffering I’d endured throughout my childhood, always there to haul me out of my own world when I got too lost in the future I was building for my kids and me brick by brick.
My homelife had been total shit growing up, and school had been my escape, taking every opportunity presented to be outside the four walls I was forced to call home.
As a result, I never took risks, and rarely took time for myself. Roman and Isla had been my sole focus aside from school and work for the past month, and the emotional toll was beginning to get to me.
Maybe Kiki was right, and I did need to cut loose, at least for one night. The kids were safe, and I knew everything else could wait for a short time while I decompressed and enjoyed myself for once.
Without giving myself a chance to find a flaw in my reasoning, I closed my eyes, just letting myself move to the music. It wasn’t long before I felt two strong hands grab onto my waist, but I didn’t open my eyes, continuing to sway to the beat as electricity sparked through me.
The smell of mint invaded my senses as I swayed, spurring me to open my eyes, and I caught a glimpse of Kiki’s shit-eating grin as I spun to wrap my arms around my partner’s neck, getting my first look at the stunning, dark-skinned male who’d moved in on me from behind.
His hair was short, and I instantly wanted to run my hands through the tight, black curls on top of his head. Deep, soulful brown eyes scorched me with their intensity as a slower song came on, and I loved feeling the man’s body moving against mine as we danced together.
I didn’t usually find myself attracted to men outside of my race, but I was mesmerized by the man gliding his capable hands over my body. I returned the favor, pressing up against his muscled chest as a bolt of heat rushed through me, straight to my rapidly heating center.
One-night stands were so far out of my realm, I didn’t even know how to go about making something like that happen, but I realized I would be up for just about anything this man wanted in the moment.
I’d already forgotten about the rest of the noisy nightclub, content in our own little bubble as I let my hands explore his strong shoulders and broad back. This was dangerous territory for me.
Kiki might have been on to something when she’d said I was sex-deprived because all I could think about was what this guy would look like naked, how he would fuck. Damien had been horrible in bed, and I was thinking I deserved a night of fun for once in my life.
Realizing I couldn’t keep calling him “this guy” in my head, I leaned up on my tiptoes, still struggling to reach his ear despite my five-foot seven height, to yell over the music, “I’m Rune.”
As I’d predicted, he responded with his own name, saying, “Shane.”
He had to be at least half a foot taller than me, and I damn near swooned as he nipped at my sensitive earlobe, soothing the hurt with his tongue before he murmured in my ear, “Do you want t…. somewhere quieter…. we can talk, gorgeous?”
It was hard to pick up on all his words over the racket surrounding us, but I registered enough to understand what he was asking.
A flicker of uncertainty washed over me, but it dissipated just as swiftly as it had appeared. I didn’t have much experience in this department, only one male to be precise, but I was forcing myself to be brave tonight, knowing it would be good for me to step out of my comfort zone every now and then.
Eagerly agreeing, Shane chuckled as he snaked an arm around my middle, keeping me securely against his side as we waded through the people still writhing to the beat around us.
I cast a look around for my friend, making eye contact with her green orbs through the flashing lights, and I shot her a thumbs up as Shane continued steering me off the dancefloor. She was surrounded by males vying for her attention, so I didn’t feel too bad about leaving her to her own devices. I was taking her advice after all.
Shane and I were halfway to the door before I knew it, and anticipation was bubbling up with his possessive hold on my hip. Alas, it appeared my night of excitement was not to be.
Shane guided us outside, the cool wind making me shiver as it met my exposed skin, but I heard his phone ringing as soon as we’d escaped the clamor from inside.
Giving me an apologetic look, he stepped away to take the call, and my hope for the evening fully vanished as I took in his agitated demeanor before he’d hung up.
At least I could tell he was as troubled about our failed venture as I was, and I reluctantly gave him my phone number, after some added insistence from him when my nerves threatened to get the better of me that was.
Then, he’d disappeared in the fancy sports car that I’d been eying when Kiki and I’d arrived earlier, leaving me feeling less than stellar after his speedy retreat.
Shane had seemed nice, and there was no questioning whether he enticed me from a purely physical standpoint. Howbeit, I had two kids and a mountain of responsibilities to handle before I even wanted to consider looking for another relationship.
I’d given him my number, but I highly doubted it would go further than that. I rubbed my hands over the goosebumps on my arms, trying to decide what I wanted to do now.
Kiki had driven us here, but I didn’t want to wait around for half the night until she was ready to go or be a third wheel for that matter. The bouncer at the door ignored me as I waffled, but he did open the door for me when I opted to go back inside.
Returning to the bar, I ordered a rideshare as I waited for the same bartender who’d taken my order before. I briefly toyed with the idea of getting a true rum and Coke to make up for the letdown of the night, but I knew myself well enough to know I would regret it later.
With Kiki distracted on the dancefloor, I was able to order my drink without the level of deceit, but I still had the bartender put my soda in the same glass as he would have for a true mixed drink in case she happened to wonder over before I’d left.
I rarely drank due to my upbringing, but Kiki didn’t take no for an answer when we came out on nights like this, which was part of the reason they were so few and far in between.
It was a hassle talking to the bartenders while she was otherwise engaged, but it was easier than arguing with her about it for a few hours or putting up with her childish behavior when she didn’t get her way.
Zoning out as I checked a few emails from work, I sipped on my Coke as I passed the time until my ride showed up. I’d given up on the silly notion of going home with a stranger for the night, so I wasn’t paying attention to the lively atmosphere around me.
Nonetheless, that seemingly didn’t mean that someone else wasn’t watching me, and I felt myself straighten perceptibly as a good-looking man with disheveled honey-blonde hair and a confident gait helped himself to the bar stool next to me.
Rune Pushing my shoulder-length blonde locks back behind my ear, I glanced over at the male who’d sauntered up. He didn’t hesitate, introducing himself as soon as he was within hearing distance as he announced, “I’m Micah, sweetheart. Tell me your name.” His chocolate-brown orbs snared my own silvery-colored ones, making me want to answer his demand in a hurry, but I bristled at the command instead, refusing to comply. I turned away from his incredibly toned physique, noticing how expensive his clothes looked before I’d started ignoring him, but that didn’t make a difference to me. Taking another long drink of my Coke, I jumped a little as my phone notified me that my ride had arrived. My face turned pink as he handed me a few napkins to clean the spill up with, and I softened my tone resultingly when I said, “Well, Micah, it’s been nice talking to you, but I’m out of here.” I shimmied off the stool, by some miracle managing to not embarrass myself in the process, and I rotated
Rune Groaning, I went to roll over as I felt the ache emanating from my muscles, but I ran smack dab into a smooth chest sprinkled with course hair that pointed downward, finding a very naked male lying beside me as my hands explored the contours of his defined pectorals and abs of their own accord. It took me a minute to grasp that I wasn’t in my own bed, that I wasn’t lying next to Damien as I had for so long. It’d been months since anyone other than the kids had slept beside me, but it was difficult forgetting about the years I’d had my ex by my side. I’d begun getting used to sleeping alone at night for the most part, but that didn’t mean I liked it any better than I had over the months when I’d been given no choice in the matter due to my ex’s poor decisions. The absolute extravagance of this bed, and the powerful arms that were locked around me brought back flashes of what we’d been up to late into the night, or maybe even into the early morning, a thrill of heat trickling
Rune I was running late Monday morning as I pushed one of the double glass doors to the office open with my body, and I was trying to concurrently juggle my cup of coffee and all my work supplies, failing spectacularly in the process I might add. Admittedly, I wasn’t the most coordinated at the best of times, so it was a risky move on my part, but I couldn’t sacrifice my morning dose of caffeine, any more of it that hadn’t sloshed out onto the ground at any rate. Bringing the cup up to my mouth, I took a few large gulps so that the liquid wasn’t in danger of splashing out again, and I shot Sara a grateful smile when she’d offered to wipe up the spill for me. She was an angel, always cleaning up after me when I was in a rush, which was practically all the time, and I decided it would be fun for the kids and I to bake her some cookies before I came in on Wednesday. I hurried through the hall as I recounted the events of the morning, well aware there weren’t many days that I wasn’t f
Micah Going to the nightclub this past weekend hadn’t been anywhere on my list of enjoyable ways to pass an evening, but Shane had insisted. He’d wanted to celebrate our move back home, us taking over the company from my dad, but then his sorry ass had ditched me. Howbeit, it’d turned out to be a blessing in disguise because my night had ended with a drop-dead gorgeous woman in my bed, the same knockout who was presently fleeing from the room like a bat out of hell as it so happened, just as she’d absconded from my bed the last time that we’d been together. “Micah?” My dad’s inquisitive voice drew my notice, and I tore my eyes away from Rune’s backside as I met his amused expression. Yeah, I knew her name but only because Shane had laid eyes on her first, something that ticked me off more than it should. I felt smug as fuck about the fact that I’d been the one to bring her home at the end of the night, but I was also pissed she’d run out the way she had. I wasn’t usually Mr. Relat
Micah A while later, my stomach rumbled hungrily, alerting me to how much time had passed since I’d last eaten, and I stole a glance at the ancient clock my dad had left hanging on the wall above the doorway. I was mad all over again at the woman who’d invaded my mind, and I knew deep down the only reason I’d stayed so late putting together my new office space was because I was hoping to catch a glimpse of her, as stupid as that sounded. Shutting down my computer, I gathered my belongings, slinging my suit jacket over my arm as I closed and locked the door behind me. What's more, it was the same one Rune had worn briefly Friday night. It was after six by this point, and there wasn’t a soul present as I strode through the entirety of the fifth floor before reaching the double glass doors at the entrance. I’d debated stopping in to check out Rune’s workspace, having learned which desk was hers when my father had given me a thorough tour, but I knew that would be overstepping my boun
Rune Trepidation threatened to consume me whole as I stepped into the elevator Wednesday morning, clutching a tin of homemade cookies in one hand while reaching out to press the button for the fifth floor as I cradled my coffee against my chest. The divine fragrance of sugar and chocolate was making my mouth water, but I took another sip of my drink in an effort to suppress my appetite. I’d eaten more than enough cookies yesterday while the kids had made a mess of the kitchen baking them, and I couldn’t eat anything regardless with the nerves coursing through me. My phone had been radio silent since this weekend, no more texts or calls coming in from Micah or Shane as I’d expected after my near run-in, but I was more worried about the silence from Micah after locking eyes with him on my way out of work previously. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that he’d recognized me Monday afternoon, and I’d been anticipating how he would react ever since then. Almost two days had passed by now
Rune I hadn’t stopped to think about what my rash decision would cost me, the sensations pouring through me too intense to concentrate on the consequences in the moment. Mercifully, I didn’t have anything personal at my desk with how little time I spent in the office, and I marched straight for the elevator without a backward glance. I stayed focused on putting one foot in front of the other, knowing I would probably break down if I paused for even a second. In the back of my mind, I took note of Sara seated at the reception desk as I passed by on my way out. She’d started to thank me for the cookies, but then she’d seen the fire in my eyes no doubt, immediately leaping to her feet in order to intercept me on the way to the elevator. I jammed the button down repeatedly, my vexation only intensifying by the second, and I knew my anger was the only thing keeping the tears at bay. Normally, I would appreciate Sara’s efforts, but I didn’t want to talk to anyone right now. Not to menti
Shane I’d known Rune was employed at the fashion magazine publication that Micah’s family owned, and I knew it was only a matter of time until we came face to face once more. I’d been looking forward to running into her in passing, but our meeting now wasn’t exactly what I’d imagined. It’d taken me a long minute to realize that she’d been crying, my excitement getting the better of me, but I didn’t push her to tell me what’d happened. Instead, I kept talking, trying to make her feel comfortable as I drove her to her destination, but I had every intention of seeking Micah out when I returned to the office, feeling positive that he’d had something to do with her downtrodden state. I wasn’t pleased with the idea of leaving her at the neglected rec center she’d requested I take her to, but I got the sense of just how important the place was to her, so I didn’t object as she’d jumped out of the car, not that I was sure I would be able to stop her with her mind made up. However, I did m
Shane “So, are you guys going to tell me the whole story now?” I asked once Isla and Roman were tucked into bed, having already ensured the house was secure earlier in the evening with my shadow’s help. Roman seemed to have taken a real shine to me, and I was determined to be the best role model I could be for him, knowing I’d done a shit job of emanating that with my sister. I ran through the things I’d taken note of as I’d observed the kids’ and adults’ behavior since Rune and Micah had returned home as I waited for someone to start the discussion, recalling a few worrisome thoughts I’d put a pin in until later. Rune had given her son a brief rundown of why his sister was injured, but it was obvious at the time that her explanation had been missing quite a bit. Isla evidently had a broken leg and had a few nasty bruises and scrapes that I could see, but I didn’t believe for one second that her injuries had come from her falling down the stairs unless something had caused her to
Shane Micah’s message wasn’t surprising in the slightest, and it only served to fuel the ire spreading rampant through my system. I’d never been a fan of Rune’s friend Kira, having seen what her idea of ‘watching’ little ones was from the beginning, but I’d been able to push my reserve to the side when my girl had explained how close she was with the other female and all she’d done for her. It helped that Kira had seemed to be doing better with the task the last time we’d interacted together, but I could see that my intuition had been right from the get-go. In any case, I was positive that Rune’s emotions had to be running the gamut, and I was glad that Micah was the one she’d asked to join her in the back with Isla, knowing he would be able to soothe both girls’ frayed emotions far better than I could for the time being. My go-to in stressful situations was humor, but I highly doubted that Rune and Isla would find anything funny at the moment. I’d noted a few curious looks and e
Rune The change in Kira’s features was damn near palpable after Isla revealed the truth, a truth that my former friend had evidently been hiding for a very long time. I wasn’t naïve enough to believe whatever relationship she’d had with him was new based on her reaction, but I was determined to learn everything I could about her involvement with my children’s father now that I was in the know. Derek hanging around could jeopardize what I was trying to accomplish with Roman and Isla, and there was no way in hell I was going to let that deadbeat delay my kids having a permanent stable home any longer. After years of back and forth with him stalling through the legal system, less than two weeks were remaining before he finally lost his rights altogether. He’d been nothing but a thorn in my side since Belinda had passed away, naming me as the children’s guardian, but I knew he didn’t give a shit about what happened to either child. I was well aware that he only wanted the government
Rune Shane’s words trickled through my brain, slowly registering through the fog that had set in due to all the mental uproar I’d already been experiencing so early on in the day, but the only thought running through my mind once I comprehended what he was telling us was, “What the fuck?” I saw red, and I was intent on flying out of the vehicle with only one thought seared into my head -Kiki was going to face my wrath. I barely noticed the ache the seatbelt strap caused as it dug into the flesh on my upper chest where my tank top had left it exposed, but it did briefly prevent me from advancing forward, only causing my anger to simmer in the forefront of my mind at the delay. Somehow, I managed to unbuckle the latch in my rattled state as I simultaneously flung the car door open, and then I was storming across the relatively short distance separating Kiki’s and my houses. Some small part of me recognized that I was behaving irrationally, but it didn’t take much for my ire to drown
Rune Yawning, I rubbed my hands over my face before concentrating on pouring myself another cup of coffee, feeling a slight thrill at not having had to make it myself like usual. I could already see how easy it would be to get used to having someone else around to help out, or two someone’s in my case, but there was still that voice in the back of my head that worried things were going too smoothly. Some part of me kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, having experienced near constant turmoil in my life it seemed, and nothing I told myself could make that anxiety disappear. Subtly, I glanced over to where Micah was sitting, his laptop opened at the table as he steadily worked to clear the backlog of emails that had been piling up ever since he’d been devoting more and more time to my children and I. The apprehension only continued to coil low in my belly as I realized the full extent that I was affecting my males’ lives to. It was to the point that I almost overfilled my cup w
I am so sorry I haven't been uploading. I swear I'm working on it. My life is just hectic at the moment. I lost my babysitter for standing up for my son, and I'm struggling to find another one I trust and can afford. I'm doing my best. Things are just rough for me for the time being. I've outlined the rest of this novel, but I've been too stressed to sit down and focus on what I want to write. I have to write at least 100 words to post this update, so this is me writing nonsense to meet the quota.
Micah “What messages? What’s going on guys?” Rune’s bell-like voice rung out less than a minute later, slicing through the palpable pressure in the large open area that made up the kitchen and living room. Startled, I turned from where I’d been slouched in a chair at the table, jumping to my feet as my eyes connected with Rune’s sleepy, silver-gray orbs. I was surprised Shane hadn’t noticed her arrival with his view of the hall, but I wasn’t upset that she had overheard us either, guessing I had just missed her when I’d rotated in my seat to look in the direction of where she had been dozing prior. “Good morning, sweetheart. How did you sleep?” I asked, wrapping my arms around her as I did so, and I relaxed some as she willingly accepted my gesture. Shane didn’t need me to lead by example, already moving towards our girl the instant he’d realized we weren’t alone any longer. It appeared that I needed to get my reflexes checked if this morning was anything to go by. That was twice
Micah The day had gone off without a hitch to my relief, and I was well sated with Rune resting in my arms where she belonged, Shane’s big body scrunched up on her other side. It was a tight fit for us all in her queen size bed, the mattress not having been intended for one average height woman and two men over six feet tall, but it only meant I got to hold her closer to me all night. Even so, I felt confident that Shane planned to order her a bigger bed at some point, the other male preferring to have room to stretch out as he slept, but he was wisely waiting for a less hectic moment to spring the change on Rune. We would have to have a deeper discussion about living together more permanently after she was out of danger, which I wasn’t convinced she would be until that bastard was behind bars permanently, or dead, but I was content to follow her to the ends of the earth, regardless. Thus far, she’d been resistant to any attempt on our part to aid her in any way, especially when t
Rune Shane’s lips slammed over mine in a bruising kiss, keeping my pulse rising as I felt someone’s hand glide sensuously down my side and over the curve of my hip. The positioning of it told me it was likely Micah, but I didn’t give a damn who the appendage belonged to when two calloused digits met my sopping wet center, making me whimper with the feeling of them thrusting into my heat without warning. Gasping for air, I tried to catch my breath as Shane’s attention also moved to more erogenous areas on my body, but they gave me no measure, two mouths and four hands being capable of a hell of a lot as it turned out. Heretofore, my one-on-one experiences with the men had scarcely prepared me for the intensity of the moment, and I knew I would swiftly become addicted to the feeling of ecstasy that was coursing through my body, of being at the center of their attention. Someone plucked at the taut buds my nipples had become, but I kept my eyes sealed shut, not caring which male was
