Aiden is mad at me, Madeline.” Drew’s voice blared through her phone’s speaker, echoing in the kitchen.

She chuckled. She turned her head from the frying pan towards her phone. “Well, what were you expecting? We both knew that there was no way Aiden would take it nicely, but it was a risk we were willing to take.”

“It was not really that bad, was it?”

She cringed. “It wasn’t. If one liked a barbie talkative. Which obviously Aiden doesn’t.” Eleanor didn’t stop talking throughout the dinner. Perhaps it would not have been so bad if she had not been so intent on knowing everything, being in on every inside joke, and digging deep into the soils of their histories. For Aiden, who was really a private person, that had been a big strike against her.

“How was I supposed to know that Bammy’s sister’s cousin was going to turn out that way?”

“From the way the family tree sounds? How can she be Bammy’s sister’s cousin but not be his cousin?”

“I told you the other time you asked. Lillian is Bammy’

“No!” Aiden shook his head vehemently. His friend shot him a ‘seriously?’ look. “I can’t believe you have the guts to ask me to accompany you and Maddie to another friends only outing. After what you did in the last friends only outing you invited me to. I’m pretty you’ve heard that idiom that says ‘once bitten, twice shy.’”“Come on, Aiden. I am sorry. I didn’t know Eleanor would be…you know...”“Reminding me that you were the one that chose that barbie as my date is not going to make me forgive you faster.”“Fine. Come to this outing not for my sake, but for Madeline’s.”“Last I remembered she was the brain behind the blind date, the one who has somehow decided that I need to be thrown into the dating waters.”“Now, you are exaggerating.”“I am not exaggerating, Drew. There is a reason I do not date and you know it. I expected that as my friend you would guard my decision. If nothing else, you would respect it, not gang up against me.”“Even if that decision is not exactly good for

Maddie picked her tote bag off her bed and hurried out of the room. She really needed to stop keeping Drew and Aiden waiting. Aiden had been around since eight a.m. The time they all had agreed to. Which was forty-five minutes ago.Sincerely, it was never her intention to take so much time. It was just that choosing a cloth that was not revealing too much skin but still had the ability to cause Drew’s jaw to drop was no easy feat. Her messy bun bounced as she raced down the stairs into the living room. Aiden seemed to be playing a kind of game with Bane and Marlowe. Drew was talking with a young man who she didn’t know but who seemed to be a close friend of her husband.“I am ready. I am sorry for the delay.”Drew’s head shot up. His eyes crinkled in a smile of pleasure, sending a shot of satisfaction through her. “You are always forgiven, Madeline.” He stood up and stretched his hand to her. “Come meet Adrian, Aiden’s brother.”She looked at Aiden. “You have a brother?”Once she had

He had a yacht.Well, if you were looking at it from the perspective that all he had was hers, she had a yacht. She flipping had a yacht.Oh, mother. Days like this Maddie wished she was here to see this. To experience this. Crazy, she knew but she wished it anyways. She wished her mother had not died in not just a toxic relationship with father, but also in a sad existence of lack. She wished that somehow her mother would have experienced fine things like this. It would not transform the relationship with her father from toxic to healthy but perhaps it would have made the pill easier to swallow."Hey," Drew's voice brought her back to the present. "Are you okay? You look sad all of the sudden.""Thinking about my mother."He drew her into his arms and pressed a comforting kiss to her temple. "What brought it on, though?"She pulled back to look up at his face. "I own a freaking yacht, Drew.""What does that have to with anything?""Mom always wanted to hangout on a yacht. She would

Aiden called them that he had received feedback from Xavier, the mole they planted in the accounting department, and that he was coming over to relate the news to them.Aiden arrived in the middle of their breakfast with sleep bags under his eyes, looking completely drained out. He looked like he slept in his clothes.Drew eyed his friend with concern in his eyes. "Don't tell me it's our case that has got you looking like this."Aiden dropped on a chair and shut his eyes. "No. It's a new case that landed in my laps three days ago.""What is it about?""You know I can not go discussing cases with you. Client confidentiality and all."Feeling that the two friends needed time to themselves, Maddie stood up and excused herself on the pretense of getting Aiden breakfast. When she looked back, the two friends were whispering to each other. She took her time serving Aiden's breakfast and delivering it to him. When she returned to the breakfast nook, the private conversation was over."Thank y

Maddie was struggling to make head and tails of it all and judging from the look on Drew's face, she was not the one suffering from that malady. The villain seemed to have one goal, which was to destroy McBride Foods. How he seemed to be going around it was what had her tied in knots.First, he attacked the quality of the company's products. Then he spread rumors that the company was going to bankrupt.Reducing the quality of the company's products painted him as one who wanted to profit off the company at the detriment of the company. On the other hand, spreading rumors about the company losing money was not going to get him as much money as just sabotaging the company's products would. So why was he…?Unless…She snapped her fingers. "I've got it."Two pair of eyes rested on her."Brand image." She stood up. "Think about it, Drew. A company is only what the public think it is. Sabotaging the company's products is not to get more profit. It is to paint the picture of a low-quality pr

Madeline was curious about his games. At first he thought it was just a way of her trying to distract him from the latest development in operation save McBride Foods, then he looked into her eyes and saw the sincerity in them."What do you want to know?" He cocked his head towards the stairs, silently asking her to follow him."Everything.""You can get bored.""Your passion would make up for your bad teaching skills.""I am not a bad teacher. I taught you water skiing.""That was a practical course. This is more theoretical.""I am not a bad teacher.""Alright. A boring teacher then."He laughed. "The reason I mentioned that you might be bored is because of the jargon I will be using to explain my games. And not because I am a boring teacher.""You will break them down.""Even then, it can be overwhelming.""Not if I am interested in what you have to say. And I am.""Alright then." He opened the door to the study and stepped back for her to step in first. "Have you ever been here?"

Drew rubbed circles on Maddie's bare back. Her fierce proclamation had landed them both on the bed. Now they were trading twenty questions. "Mom wanted a brood of children." Drew answered her question about why his parents had only had one child. "But?""But Dad wanted one.""And she just agreed?"He shrugged. "Dad brought forth his strong reasons and she considered them and found them reasonable enough.""What were his strong reasons?"Drew chuckled. "Calm your horses, Madeline. It was their choice.""I am calm. I am just finding it hard to understand why your mom agreed to one kid. This is babies we are talking about.""I thought you didn't want plenty kids.""I said I want three. Two times more than one."That only tickled him the more."Weren't they supposed to come to a compromise?"He ran his hand down the bridge of her nose. She turned into the living room while Drew went to get the door. She wondered kind of update from Kendall had caused Aiden to rush back when he had just left few hours ago."Hello, Maddie." Aiden sat on the couch opposite hers. "Apologies for interrupting what was obviously going on.""Oh, for Pete's sake!" Drew exclaimed. "You just could not look and pass away, could you?""What? Drew’s heart was full as he watched Aunt Lauren fuss over Madeline and their daughter. She, Uncle Keith and Aiden had come over immediately they got home from the hospital. He noted the look of wonder that came upon his wife’s face as she stared at the face of the precious baby in her arms.Melissa Vivianne McBride.Melissa because Madeline had always loved the name. Vivianne after his mother. He may or may not have choked up when she named their daughter after his mother.A tap on his shoulder turned his gaze away from the two people he had been staring at all day. “I have something to tell you.” Aiden said, his eyes so serious. He remembered when Madeline told him that Aiden would let him know what had been going on when it was time. It seemed now was time. With a nod, he stood up, mouthed the words, “be right back” to Madeline and headed to his study, Aiden keeping in step with him.He opened the door and allowed Aiden to step in first before bringing in the rear. “What’s it, Aid

“Wait, what?” Aiden’s eyes bounced between Drew and Maddie.Drew nodded. “You are going to be an uncle.”Aiden swallowed hard. The hard guy looked as if he was about to tear up. “I wanted to ask how but I remember how many times I had to excuse myself out of the room so that you guys could…”“Aiden!” Drew exclaimed while she just laughed. “We get it.”Aiden’s face softened in a smile. He stood up and pulled her up into a hug. Then he gave Drew a one-shouldered hug. “Congratulations, guys. I am so happy for you both. To think that I was so opposed to all these from the beginning.” His eyes got flooded with emotions. “I am so glad it all worked out. Does Mom and Dad know?” “Aunt Lauren was the first to figure it out.” Drew answered. “Even before we did.”Aiden laughed, then suddenly got caught up in his thoughts. When he pulled himself out of his thoughts, he flashed them a bright — perhaps a tad overbright — smile. “Whether a boy or a girl, I am the child’s godfather. You guys going t

“I am fine!” Maddie esclaimed for the umpteeneth time that day and it was only just one in the afternoon.“I will believe that when you stop sleeping like a log of wood.” Drew shot back. Her mouth rounded in an ‘O’ of surprise, then she burst into laughter. “That was not so very nice, Drew. You don’t go around telling a woman that she sleeps like a log of wood.”“Not when the woman is my wife and is stubbornly claiming that she is fine even though clearly she isn’t.”She had been sleeping alot recently. And she might or might not have just woken up from what was supposed to be a very short nap that elongated into a good sleep. But that was not the point. She was fine. “I am fine. Everyone has the right to feel overwhelmed once in a while.”“What is overwhelming you, love.?”“School. Classes. Reading. It was like he lost his parents all over again.Drew stared at the headstone marking the remains of his parents, and his heart constricted within him. His grip on the bouquet of flowers tightened. Never had he felt so much anger. As he read the epitaph, the words “they shouldn’t be here” kept echoing in his mind. And that did nothing to help his anger. Or grief. He wasn’t sure he felt grief. Not when it felt like his heart was a hollow basket, and the lacrimal glands in his eyes had gotten so dry, he was no longer capable of producing tears. Was this what grief felt like?A soft hand covered his hand holding the flowers. Feminine fingers pried his fingers from their chokehold, collecting the flowers in the process. Without a word, he watched his wife lay the flowers on his parent’s grave. When she turned, wrapped her arms around his waist and laid her head on his chest, he held her tightly. Like she was his anchor. And she was. In this time when he felt out of touch with everything,

Aiden looked like death warmed over. Maddie opened the door wider and stepped back. “You look terrible.”Aiden chuckled. “Thank you.” He sobered. “It is good to see you.”She smiled back. She really must have given Drew the scare.”This is where I belong.”“Glad you realized it before I had to lasso you and drag you back to my friend.”She laughed. “I would like to see you try. Drew is asleep and you look like you could use a good nap yourself. Why don’t you make use of one of the guest rooms?”Aiden nodded and started towards the stairs.“This was what you suspected, wasn’t it?” She asked, stopping him on his tracks. “That day I accused you.”“I won’t say accuse. It was more of a challenge. And yes, it is what I suspected. After his parents’ will was read and he disappeared to his mountain cabin, my dad mentioned it in passing one day that Rich had been the one to suggest that the caveat be tied to Drew’s inheritance. According to Dad, the caveat was supposed to be on all of his inhe

Since Maxwell lawyered up, the questioning as it were was over — or at least till his lawyer arrived. But Drew could not find the strength to move from the spot he had been standing since the questioning started. Maxwell’s confession was still echoing in his head. His parents’ accident had not been an accident but a murder. His parents should not have died. His throat closed and it was all he could do to breathe. The door to the observation room opened and Aiden walked in. his friend’s eyes were pained. He moved towards Drew. “it is going to be a long night. You should head home.”All he could do was nod.Aiden was quiet for some moments. “I am sorry you had to hear that.”He shook his head. “I am not. It hurts like dickens but it is better than never knowing.”Aiden’s hand came up to squeeze his shoulder in an act of comfort. “Take care. “So what do you have against Drew?” Kendall’s question traveled through the headphones into Drew’s ears.He wondered just how his sneaky cousin would answer this one. There was a pause, then Maxwell said, “I do not exactly have something against my cousin. I just can’t stand hypocrites. Smile in the public but is ready to kill in the shadows.” Another pause. “We are probably the only ones that realize what a scam Drew is.”“Why have you never confronted him or maybe reported him to your aunt and uncle? When they were alive, that is.?”“I never had evidence. Plus he was their star child. Their only child. They would never believe the poor brother’s child.” Maxwell’s voice dropped to a mutter. “Plus just because a person shared your blood or is married to one who shared your blood does not mean they are family.” Aiden looked at him. “Am I missing something?”He shook his head. “I am as lost as you are, Aiden.”Then in a voice that was loud enough for Kendall to hear, Maxwell said, “ca

Was this how death felt like? The existence of nothingness. Swimming in the pool of hopelessness. One might say she was exaggerating. But nothing could deny the fact that perhaps love was not for her. She could not stand the uncertainty. And the realization of that hurt.Probably hurt more than a real heartbreak. The person who said it was better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all probably never knew what it meant to live a life where the reality you knew was always been let down. Inhaled deeply. “This,” she raised the picture up, “did it really happen?”He shut his eyes. “Yes.” His eyes opened, pleading. “But…”“The yes would suffice, Drew.” She cut in. she closed her eyes.
