Chapter 2

Author: Last Light
I gritted my teeth before forcing a sweet smile on my face. I said, "I'm fine with sleeping in the living room. My parents' photos are placed in the living room, anyway, so I'll pretend they're keeping me company. But…"

I was hesitant to speak. Nancy frowned a little as she looked at me, prodding, "But what?"

I whispered, "Aunt Nancy, I read in a book that you're not supposed to use a dead person's belongings. It's really bad luck! Look, my mom's photo is looking right at you!"

I extended my hand and pointed at the photos of my parents placed next to the TV in the living room.

When Nancy heard that, she looked up to find that she was meeting the gaze of the person in the photo. Startled, she looked like she wasn't interested in the high-end skincare products anymore. She shoved them aside in disdain.

I subtly turned up the corners of my lips, deciding to add more fuel to the fire.

I went to the living room and retrieved the first aid kit stored there. Taking out a tube of ointment meant for skin abscesses, I graciously handed it to Nancy.

I said, "Here, Aunt Nancy. My mom always had skin infections when she was alive. I'm not sure if it can be transmitted via clothing, though. Anyway, this ointment is the one she always uses. It's pretty effective."

"Skin infections?" Nancy frowned deeply as she leaped off the bed in panic, exclaiming, "You brat! Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

With that, she hurriedly grabbed her clothes and ran into the bathroom connected to the master bedroom.

I exited the master bedroom and proceeded to sit on the couch. I stared at my mom's photo.

I said in my mind, "Mom, I'm sorry for lying that you had skin infections. I should've been more respectful of you. Still, I was doing it to protect your belongings. I had no choice.

"Dad, Mom, please protect me as you watch over me from above. I have to protect everything our family has and teach these evil people a lesson for trying to hurt us."

Just then, Amy tossed my school bag and books out of my room, treating them like trash. My stuff crashed heavily onto the floor. "Julia, this room is mine now, so take your garbage with you."

The pink princess-like dress she was wearing was a dress my mom had bought for me. It was an expensive branded item.

As expected, the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Both Amy and her mother had a weird tendency to wear other people's clothes.

"Well, Amy, since all my stuff is garbage to you and you hate me so much, why don't you take off that dress and give it back to me?" I retorted nonchalantly.

Amy instantly had a foul look on her face as she said, "Did you think I'd care? From today onward, you're nothing but my maid, so your things naturally belong to me, too."

"I'm your maid, you say? Who made that decision, you or Uncle Charles? Why don't we go ask him about it?" I retorted. Then, I took her hand and pretended that I was going out to look for Charles.

Amy's expression froze as she silently retracted her hand.

She turned around to go back to her room, but then, she happened to catch sight of my parents' photos in the living room. Stopping in her steps, she said mockingly, "Do you suppose you're the sort of person who brings bad luck, Julia? Were you the reason your parents died when you were only 14?"

My gaze instantly turned cold. I didn't mind them mistreating or bullying me, but I couldn't tolerate them talking bad about my parents, especially when they were taking over my house like robbers!

Just then, I heard the sound of the key turning in the door lock. Calming down, I put on a look of indignation as I said, "That's not impossible. If you're worried that I might bring death and bad luck to you too, I can get Uncle Charles to revoke his guardianship rights."

Charles had just entered the house when he heard me talking about getting his guardianship rights revoked. His expression shifted in anxiety. "Julia, don't listen to Amy. We don't think that at all."

They hadn't gotten their hands on my family's house and the password for the bank cards. Of course, they wouldn't want to have the guardianship rights revoked right now.

Getting the guardianship rights revoked was a clean hit to Charles' critical weakness.

"But Uncle Charles, Amy just said that I was the reason my parents died. She might be right. I don't want to get you and your family in trouble too," I said, biting my lip and trying to look as pitiful as possible.Fearing that I might actually get the guardianship rights revoked, Charles hastily glared at Amy and shouted angrily, "Amy, apologize to Julia right now! I'll teach you a lesson if you say those things again!"Amy was Charles and Nancy's only daughter and the apple of their eye, so of course, Charles' harsh tone startled her. Her eyes instantly reddened as she began sobbing pitifully. She said stubbornly, "No way! She really does bring bad luck, and she'll be the death of our family!"When I heard that, I pursed my lips and put on an even sadder expression. I lamented, "It's all my fault, Uncle Charles. I don't think you should take me in, after all. Just leave me alone to fend for myself."In his panic, Charles raised his hand and slapped Amy across the face. He shouted

That night, I curled up under a blanket and spent the night on the couch. The couch was too narrow, so I woke up several times from the cold to look for my blanket which had fallen onto the floor. The next day, my whole body was sore and in pain. Before daybreak, I went out with my bag on my shoulders. I got on a bus and had to make several transfers before I arrived at my Aunt Elizabeth's place.Even from a distance away, I could see Elizabeth with the child carrier as she carried my baby cousin, who wasn't even a year old, on her back. She was pushing her cart full of breakfast wraps as she walked out the door.It was summer then, and the heat was unbearable. She hadn't taken more than a few steps when her forehead was already full of sweat.I called out to her from behind, "Aunt Elizabeth!"Elizabeth looked at me in surprise. She probably didn't want me to witness her predicament, for she tried to send me away after getting an egg-filled breakfast wrap from her cart and stuff

When everything was over, Amy and her lackeys gleefully walked away.I crouched in a corner. When they had gone out of sight, I slowly made my way back to the classroom.I committed their appearances to memory, making sure to remember the faces of Amy's two lackeys. In the days that followed, I carefully minded my behavior so that Amy wouldn't have a chance to pick on me.At the same time, I secretly observed the habits of Amy's two lackeys. One of the lackeys, Anna Clark, was a mobile game addict and didn't care for her studies. However, she lacked skill, so she seemed to be forever stuck in the Diamond rank in the game. The other lackey, Betsy Turner, was trying to improve in her studies, but she failed all her subjects, and she couldn't even turn in her homework sometimes. It was easy to deal with people once their weaknesses were located.I thought, "Amy, it's about time I give you a taste of your own medicine."During a break, Anna went to the bathroom, and I followed sui

After school, I asked Anna to keep Amy distracted while I got Betsy to meet me alone in the school field. When Betsy realized that it was me, her expression shifted. "So, it was you who bribed Anna?" she asked."That's not a very nice way to put it. I just think of Anna as someone I can genuinely be friends with," I replied calmly."Quit playing tricks with me. I'm not Anna, so I won't fall for your tricks. Amy and I are best friends, and we're super close to each other," Betsy said, glaring at me warily. "I'm telling Amy that you're trying to bribe me."She turned around to leave.I called out to her, "What's the rush? You think of her as a best friend, but what about her? Give me a few minutes. I have something to show you." I took out the voice recorder in my pocket. Then, I pressed the play button. For some reason, Betsy paused in her footsteps.Amy's and Anna's voices rang out from the voice recorder. "Amy, who are you closer to? Me or Betsy?" Anna had asked.Amy had repli

The next day, Amy made her way toward me after school. Then, she forcefully rammed into me.I hadn't even said anything when she shouted arrogantly at me, "Look where you're going, Julia! You bumped into me!"I frowned a little. Then, I simply stepped aside to avoid her."Stop right there! Are you going to just walk away after bumping into someone? I want you to kneel and apologize to me!" Amy shouted as she suddenly pulled me back. Her eyes were filled with malice.I finally realized what she was trying to do. Bumping into me was just an excuse. Anna and Betsy were right. Amy had put on this show just for me.I didn't get mad at that thought. Instead, I said in a pitiful and helpless tone, "You want me to kneel in front of the whole class just because I bumped into you? Isn't that a little too much, Amy? I'm even your family! If you have any complaints about me, just tell me. I can change my ways."Amy spat and said mockingly, "Oh, you're backing off now? Where has that high-and

When I got home that night, Amy stormed toward me. Her eyes were puffy and red. She lifted her hand, clearly aiming to strike me."This is all your fault, Julia! You got me expelled! I'm going to make you pay!"I stayed calm and held up my phone. "Have you not bullied me enough at school? Maybe I should record this and send it to the reporters to expose your true colors."I'd already collected quite a few contacts for this very reason."I don't care! I'll kill you!"Amy was relentless. She grabbed a ceramic bowl from the table to throw it at me."Enough, you idiot!" Charles bellowed, slapping Amy hard across the face. "It's bad enough you got caught at school. Must you cause problems at home too?"I glanced at Charles, aware that he wasn't stepping in to help me. Amy was sentenced to several years in a juvenile detention center for poisoning me. After I was discharged from the hospital, Charles and Nancy completely turned against me.They stopped giving me food or even a drop of water. Left with no other option, I had to dip into my savings again to discreetly buy meals outside.I was constantly on guard and watched their every move. One day, when I got home from school early, I overheard a conversation between Charles and Nancy through the door."Julia's about to turn 18. I say we marry her off and get rid of such inconvenience," said Nancy.Charles hesitated. "Isn't that a bit too much? She's barely an adult.""Why, are you getting attached to your niece now?" Nancy's voice sharpened. "Have you forgotten how Amy ended up in jail because of her?"Charles fell silent, and Nancy continued, "I've already found someone to help us. He promised to find a man for Julia. There's no way she will escape this. It's settled."Charles didn't protest

After Amy had been thoroughly beaten, she showed no sign of remorse.Still sporting bruises, she stormed up to me and roared, "Julia, everything that's happened to me is your fault! Just you wait, one day I'm going to kill you!"Seeing her rage-filled expression made me want to laugh. Every time she planned to come after me, she had to announce it first with a dramatic threat.Yet, the malicious glint in her eyes sent a chill down my spine. Amy wasn't exactly smart, but when she was pushed to the edge, there was no telling what she might do. Thus, for the first time, I used another bank card Mom had left me.I withdrew a few thousand dollars and purchased a set of high-definition, hidden cameras. When the house was empty, I discreetly installed them in the corners of the living room. From that point on, every day before coming home from school, I would check the footage to see what had been happening at home. And it turned out my precautions weren't in vain.Three days later,

About half a year later, Amy reconciled with her parents. The moment she returned, she came straight for me."Julia, you wretch! You ratted me out. I'll kill you!" she spat furiously."You're the one who crossed the line. You poisoned your unborn brother. I'm really tempted to post everything you did online," I shot back.Amy's face turned pale. She didn't care if videos of her bullying me surfaced, but the truth about poisoning her unborn baby brother was a whole other matter. It could land her in jail. The bravado she had just mustered quickly faded.Nevertheless, she wasn't ready to give up just yet. Gritting her teeth, she said, "You did me wrong, so you owe me compensation. I'm broke right now. Give me a thousand dollars."I shrugged. "Your parents treat me so badly that I can barely eat in this house. Do you think I'd have any money? I don't even have 50 dollars."Amy eyed my clothes, which I had worn since last year. She seemed unsure if I was telling the truth. I guessed

After lunch, Charles and Nancy went to their room for a nap, but Amy lingered in the kitchen. As I cleaned up the dishes, she continued to taunt me."Julia, you act all high and mighty at school. You've got Anna and Betsy wrapped around your finger, but let me remind you that you're just an orphan in my house. You're nothing without your parents."The word "orphan" made me flinch. I stopped what I was doing and stared at her. "This is my house. What makes you think it's yours?"Amy scoffed. "It's only a matter of time before it's mine. We'll see."Amy must have figured out that Nancy was pregnant. Fearing Nancy might neglect her after giving birth to another child, she frantically went to desperate lengths. It was true what they say—like mother, like daughter. That afternoon, I sat in the living room, pretending to study the postpartum care book. Her poor grades dropped even further, and she ended up at a vocational school. She started coming home less often, and when she did, it was only to ask her parents for money.By the end of my freshman year, Nancy got pregnant. Given her age, it was considered a high-risk pregnancy, and Charles treated the situation very seriously. On the first day of summer break, Charles called me into his room and commanded, "Julia, Nancy's pregnant now. Since you're on break, it's your responsibility to take care of her."I frowned and immediately refused.
