FREYA’s POV

I stand at the foot of the hill that leads to Light Paw Village as the sun above me begins to set.

The place no longer looks like it used to. The once clear path is now overrun by weeds and littered with garbage. There are even carcasses of little animals lying around. Bats, rats and even rabbits. Hmm…did the rogues come after we all left the village?

Perhaps.

I sigh and close my eyes, tilting my head up towards the sky. It should be raining. Though a sudden downpour might slicken my climb, surely, it would cut the stench.

Yes, there is a stench. But it is not from the garbage and carcasses. My brows furrow and my eyes narrow as my gaze trails up the path up to my old village.

Strange. Someone is up there. My breath quickens and I twist my head to look at the clearing from where I came from. Perhaps I should come back another day. At least until the stranger who now roams the village is gone.

But I ne

FREYA’s POV Our bodies are covered in sweat as I lay on Clyde’s chest, listening to the sound of his beating heart. Trailing a finger down his chest, I ask, “What’s your plan?” At this, Clyde chuckles and pushes my head away. He gets up from the creaky wooden bed that once belonged to both Elena and I and starts to put on his shirt. “Kill Hunter, and conquer a whole new world.” My brows furrow, he is not making any sense. And as if he understands my confusion, he turns around and cups my chin, lifting my head slightly so my eyes meet his. He’s scaring me. “You see my missing eye?” I gulp and with a trembling breath, I stare into his empty eye socket. “Yes…” Clyde’s face contorts into a sickening smile. “It was a price I had to pay to find the gateway to the new world. The Sorceress demanded for it.” The Sorceress? The Sorceress from the Dark Forest? She is the sister of the infamous Witch who liv

HUNTER’s POV All is quiet in the car as Helios drives south on the coastal highway. Conner and a few others trail us from behind in another car. Clyde…if that son of a bitch dares to even touch a strand of Elena's hair, I swear I'll tear him into pieces. But deep down I know it will not be that easy to take him down. He did not become the Alpha of the Blood Stone pack for no reason. I have to admit, the man is a formidable enemy, even at his lowest, he has still managed to elude his capture. We slow down as we reach the winding road that will eventually lead us to the foot of Light Paw, but there’s been an accident. The road is jammed. I signal for Helios to pull to a stop and he does. He opens the car door and gets out of the car while I remain in the backseat, my fingers tapping at my phone. I’ve tried calling Elena more than ten times but each time, I can only get her voicemail. Damnit, should have installed

ELENA’s POVWhen I was eight, father brought me to the cinema. It was a war movie and there was this particular scene where a bomb exploded, blowing everyone into smithereens. But watching an explosion on screen is vastly different from the sight before me.I have just run past Ian and am but a few feet away from the entrance of Light Paw village when a sudden flash of light erupts, followed by the sudden slam of a shockwave. It sends both Ian and I tumbling backwards and I feel grit stinging my skin.I taste blood in my mouth; my lungs burn, and I realize that I’ve been knocked to the ground. Then there is total silence for a second or two before my ears start ringing.I look around, suddenly confused.A fireball rolls up into the night sky and I can feel its heat as I stare at the house before me. It is on fire.Someone starts screaming. I groan. Is that Ian? I stagger to my feet as bits of cloth a

ELENA’s POV I am dressed in scrubs and brought into the operation theatre. Hunter lays in the middle of the room, and I hear the horrific beeping of the heart rate monitor. The beeping does not sound good. My eyes dart back and forth between the doctor who led me in and another few surgeons who are frantically trying to save Hunter. An old woman whom I had not noticed before steps out from the shadows. Instantly I know she is no ordinary woman. She is the pack’s witch doctor. She takes one look at me and flashes me a toothy grin. “So this is the omega who has come to save her Alpha.” I understand now. I understand why they need a female omega. They need someone without a social standing, someone whom the pack will not mourn if she were to bite the dust, someone who will not affect the power struggle in any pack. Someone like me. But I don’t mind. I would go to the ends of the world and back if I co

ELENA’s POVI open my eyes to the soft rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor and am greeted by a magnificent dark blue skyline outside a rectangular window. It is breaking dawn.Slowly I turn my head away from the window and find myself in a private hospital room. The room is sparse but clean, and the lights had been switched off, with only blue and yellowish hues of the peeking sunlight illuminating the room. The place has a hint of a metallic tang from stainless steel in the open air and bleach wafting from the bed where I lay.I do not remember closing my eyes. Everything feels dull and hazy when I try to recollect my thoughts. I groan, think Elena, think! Then I remember, my last conscious memory was of Hunter laying next to me.Hunter!I sit up, pushing back a light grey blanket and attempt to jump off the bed only to feel a tug at my wrist.Oh.Looking down, I see a tiny IV tube poking out from

ELENA’s POVOnce upon a time, I championed a vision. A vision where life would be full of smiles and handshakes, a vision where life would be only a bed of roses. And as a child, I had told father of my dreams to live such a life and he would always laugh in return, ruffling my hair before stooping to my then childish height and tell me, “Elena, have you forgotten that even a bed of roses has thorns?”Father was right. There is no such thing as a perfect world full of happily ever afters. Worlds like that exist only in fairy tales. The time for dreaming is over and I need to wake up. I must stay strong.I made a vow to end the life of the man who ruined mine. And today will be the day he will die.We tear through the woods, our howls echoing through the forest, one followed by another, Ian, Helios and I.Helios leads us and we all run together under the covers of the trees even as the moonlight shines throug

ELENA’s POV The Sorceress tells me to leave with her but that both Ian and Helios are not to come. She orders them to stay in the cabin. Hearing this and realizing the gravity of the situation, Helios gives me an apologetic smile and for the first time, I see hesitance worming its way into his eyes. The man who laughs in the face of danger is afraid. “Be careful,” he says softly to me. I give him my most confident smile and nod. We depart immediately and the Sorceress brings me deeper and deeper into the forest. We come to a halt at the bottom of a hill and I frown, this place looks just like – “Light Paw?” I swear the Sorceress is a mind reader. I need to be careful to guard my thoughts against her. She laughs. “Silly child, I am no mind reader. Your naïve expression betrays your thoughts all too clearly.” She then points to the top of the hill. “The forest belongs to me, as does everything in it. I can

It flies through the air and as lightning flashes across the night sky, I catch a glimpse of the gun landing right at the edge of the first step of the staircase. From the corner of my eyes, I see it dangling like a little seesaw, tipping up and down, up and down. I estimate myself to be roughly six to eight feet away from it. Damnit, I need that gun!It is then I finally snap out of my fear like trance and the wheels in my brain begin to turn.“Where’s Freya?”Clyde smiles but his eyes are dark, I cannot tell what he is thinking.“Where do you think

ELENA’s POVI creep silently to the door. Freya has back facing me and my blade over her head. The situation is desperate. Fear seeps into me as I stare at the dire situation in front of me. Hunter has fallen on the ground and he stares at Freya in confusion. It is still my face he sees.Time is not on my side. With just one stab, Freya can kill Hunter. I curse myself for having fallen for Freya’s trick earlier, if only I can shift right now!“Remember this moment Alpha Hunter.” I hear Freya say and she moves to bring down her blade. It is time to rise to the challenge. I lunge forward, effectively catching Freya by the waist and we both tumble to the side.“Freya, no!” I yell, holding tightly onto her. She screams in anger, turns around and we come face to face.I gasp. Her face is melting, her skin is peeling off and blood drips from the raw skin underneath. I am staring into a nightmare.

HUNTER’s POVElena does not talk as she stays in my arms and I have to wonder why.She pulls back from our embrace with a smile still etched on her face and I palm her cheeks, looking into her eyes, searching for an answer. But when I stare into the windows of her soul, I see nothing. I see only coldness in her sea-blue eyes. There is a tinge of fear too.Something is not right.“Is something the matter?” I ask her. I am concerned about her, she has had a lot on her mind of late. Especially now that Freya is back. Her blue eyes do not blink and her smile does not change. She merely shakes her head and pulls my hands away, motioning towards the bow tie that lays innocently on the bed.I notice that her nails are long. That’s odd, I don’t recall ever seeing Elena having long nails like these before. She usually keeps her nails trimmed and neat.“Are you going to choke me with th

We’re werewolves for goodness sakes, not some high strung politicians who prance around in suits and do nothing but talk and play golf all day long.Conner gingerly picks up my tie and passes it back to me. I grunt and grab it from his hand, trying and failing at fixing the bow tie yet again. It sucks that I suck. And by wearing her clothes and carrying her scent, I might just be able to trick Hunter into thinking that I truly am Elena.I cannot wait to see the look on his face when his ‘dearly beloved’ stabs him in the heart. The thought of plunging a knife deep into his chest sends me into a peal of laughter.Wait.I quickly cover my mouth even as the real Elena stares at me through her bloodshot eyes. She goes completely still, just like how she used to whenever she got caught with her hand in the cookie jar as a child. For a moment, uncertainty and fear crack her face.“You knew?” she asks, her voice wavering.I take no pride in this moment. And when I speak next, there is pain in my voice; pain that mirrors how my heart feels right now.“You don’t have to do this Freya. You can still have your old life back. You have mother, Dylan and me. We love you. I love you.”She blinks and I sense a remnant of the old Freya existing deep inside the woman who stands before me. FREYA’s POVElena steps into her airy and spacious bedroom and I follow suit, quietly closing the door behind me and locking it. She turns around at the sound of the lock clicking and blinks her doe-like eyes at me. I hate it when she looks at me like that, she’s making me feel she is the innocent princess in a fairy tale and I, the evil witch or something. My lips pull into a smile and I walk over to her, taking her hands in mine.“We don’t want any interruptions when we doll you up, do we?”Elena giggles and shakes her head. So gullible, so dumb.I lead her to the bed like a lamb going for slaughter and make her sit on it. Then I walk over to her wardrobe and pull open its doors to reveal a limited selection of t-shirts, blouses or jeans. Her choice of clothing is appalling; my sister does not dress up, nor does she primp herself. Starting today, Hunter will no longer be just an Alpha of the Storm Riders pack, from today onwards, he will be king above all packs and rule throughout the lands of the northern region. It feels all so surreal and I have to pinch myself just to make sure that I am not dreaming. I remember being so excited that I could not sleep at all last night, tossing and turning in bed until the crack of dawn. And because of the lack of sleep, I feel like a zombie right now. A thrilled one nonetheless. This morning, the packhouse is abuzz with excitement. Everyone is busy preparing for Hunter's coronation. ELENA’s POVI find Hunter later that night, strolling along the fields where we once practised our shooting for the trial. It was here that he trained me to become the marksman that I am today. Here, I am reminded of how he held me in his arms on this very field, steadying my then trembling hands and teaching me to look past the pain and to just focus on the target at hand. I look at him and my lips curve up into a smile, I would not be who I am today if it were not for Hunter.I owe this man my life. He is the light of my life, the reason I live and breathe. But tonight, his scent is grave and thoughtful and I walk by his side without speaking as he strolls with both hands clasped behind his back. It is a clear night and the stars shine bright above our heads without twinkling.“How’s Freya?” he finally asks after what feels like an eternity of silence.I kneel by the side of a little pond next to the field

Her face is soiled and her once beautiful blue dress, torn and tattered.Nevertheless, she smiles when she sees me. I suck in a deep breath and fist my fingers so hard my nails create indents in my palms.“Freya.”The conversation with Hunter is still very fresh in my mind. My sister tried to kill him. And now she is back.“I thought I asked for you to leave and never come back,” Hunter’s voice calls out from the foyer. He strides over to where I stand and links his hand with mine, intertwining our fingers together.Freya gulps and tugs at her dress.
