On the third day that she was imprisoned in that room, Anna was looking at the cars passing by below, interested in actually throwing herself out of that window, when she heard angry voices coming from inside the house. After a while, she realized that they must be in the next room, and she put her ear to the wall to hear what they were saying. That maid hadn't come back, and she needed to distract herself with something.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Stop any lawyer from having access to him!” said an older woman's voice.
“And what exactly am I supposed to do? Have the legs of every lawyer who presses the doorbell broken?”
“You know more effective ways of stopping people...”
There was a silence and Anna was livid. They really were dangerous. In those seven months, she hadn't heard All relate to her business in any direct way, and perhaps this had created a false illusion in her that he was a good man.
“Even if I killed all the lawyers in our country, I couldn't kill all the lawyers in the world.” The man's voice said with a certain resignation.
Anna heard the sound of a chair being dragged and imagined that one of the two had stood up.
“There's another solution...” The woman's voice said as if hesitating to say the solution out loud.
“I'm listening.”
“Only one person would have to die, if you accept...”
“No, Mom! I can't do that to him! All is my father and I don't want him to spend the last days or months of his life thinking that I stole his joy!”
“Then maybe you're ready for this proposal.” She said and the sound of a drawer opening piqued Anna's curiosity. “I've presented you with all the solutions I could think of for an emergency...”
He took such a deep breath that Anna imagined the man was about to suffer a heart attack.
“What about your eldest son?”
“He says he won't get involved.”
“He's hiding something from us.”
“That could be a problem for later.”
They were silent. Anna imagined that they must be staring at each other. Until the man's voice came back menacingly.
“You know what the firstborn's secret is.” He said angrily.
“I don't. I've never seen him act as if he's hiding something from us. You became very sensitive after you discovered that you can't give him commands, like you do with everyone else. Isn't having everyone enough for you?”
“It's not my ego that's hurt, woman! I feel something strange in his presence.”
“That's called jealousy.”
“It's not that simple... I've never seen him be like one of us.”
Anna squeezed her eyes shut. What were they talking about?”
“He doesn't need to transform to prove himself, my son. You are mistaken for twins. You are both biological sons of the same father, no doubt about it. And even if he's not my biological son, I love him as much as I love you. Maybe more than I love you.” She said in a teasing voice.
“Doesn't that make him even stranger? He's thirty and looks my age.”
“Are you accusing your brother of something? Be more objective, please.”
“I suspect something, yes. But I'm going to investigate before... You're right about one thing. He's definitely my blood.”
Anna heard a knock on the door and another, more jovial voice come in to greet them.
“So, cousin. You sent for me. You know we've gone two years without our usual distraction and I get annoyed when you force me to abandon my adventures for no apparent reason.”
“My father is in hospital.”
“What happened?”
“He's having some tests...”
“Well... He's still young, soon he'll be traveling again with that whore of his... Sorry, auntie.”
Anna was furious. But she couldn't stop listening to that strange conversation. Was Allister young? A man of 64? Or were they talking about someone else?
“Don't worry, I was just leaving. I like that you see her like this, you won't have any trouble doing what needs to be done.”
The sound of chairs dragging again and the sound of high heels walking through the next room.
“My son... You have to decide soon. He's being discharged from hospital today.” She said and after a kiss, the door opened and closed carefully.
“I don't think we should refer to our next product like that.” Her son's voice said, but Anna realized that there was no recrimination in it, but amusement.
“You called me because something bad is happening, right?”
“I don't know if my father will survive.”
“And you want to cry on my shoulder?”
Anna heard the sound of laughter that she was trying to contain.
“Don't be an idiot. I want all the arrangements to be made.”
“Arrangements?”
“My father got weak, cousin. He's in hospital now, because he abandoned the constant vigilance we must maintain. Even if he survives, I will no longer leave any part of the business in his hands.”
“That means...”
“That I want you to hand over to me the part of my father that is in your father's control.”
“Has my father done anything wrong?”
“No. But... Dester is Allister's friend, not mine. He's not going to look after my business so closely. I feel him trying to resist my authority every time I use it with him.”
“Give me your computer and I'll ask him in an email to send you all the reports.”
Anna realized that they had been silent for almost five minutes.
“Okay, cousin. The reports will reach you soon. But now let's talk about more... spicier matters. Should we wait to take the product home?”
“I have plans for it. But I can't do anything to upset my father.”
Anna heard the sound of chairs being dragged and shoes being kicked out of the room and the door opening.
Anna ran back to the window. What were they planning? Were they thinking of killing her? They probably were. The part where the man talked about making All suffer... They had to be talking about her. But why didn't they want to see the lawyers?
Lunch was served like every day and this time they left their clothes too. Anna felt grateful. She was tired of wearing men's pyjamas that were too big and baggy on her body.
The door opened and the maid, Sarah, who hadn't shown up for three days, arrived with a forced smile. “Hello, Anna.” “You've disappeared.” “I work at the boss's mansion, and I only swap places with the maid who works here when he comes over. I know how to do everything the way he likes it, so...” Anna stared at her uncomprehendingly. Did Allister's boss son have a relationship with that woman? “Oh! You two...” The woman smiled and her cheeks turned red. “Yes. When he comes to see me... But not very often. Anyway, I always like to be around if he needs me...” “I see... Why don't you two date, get married and...” “I'm twice his age. A bit more than twice, I'd say... Although, I know I look younger even than you yourself.” She said, fixing her hair and Anna noticed her face covered in make-up and felt pity. She looked to be in her fifties, but she thought she should cheer her up. “Age doesn't make much difference. All is old enough to be my grandfather, and yet w
Anna didn't understand what that man was up to. It didn't seem like she was living in reality. Maybe it was just a nightmare. “What's in it for you?” “I've surrounded my family's assets with care, and there are two loopholes left. One of them, I hope All doesn't remember it, because I won't be able to intervene, but one of these loopholes is that you become his heir if you marry him. And the only way I've found to stop him doing that is this. You can't officiate two marriages.” “I can marry any man to avoid that, it doesn't have to be you.” “Believe me, I don't want that. But I'm not going to put myself in the position of someone who can be blackmailed... I don't trust anyone and... I can't let my father go without his toy.” “What happens if I don't sign?” “There's no chance of that.” “You can't make me!” She saw his gaze flash dangerously. “Do you want to bet?” “If you say you're going to kill my father, do it. I'll be sad, but that's all there is to it.” “
There was an older woman, wearing a fur coat and a leather bag, which was what very rich people wore in those days, standing there. She looked down at Allister on the bed as if she were someone far superior to him. Anna wanted to see All, but not with that woman inside. She was sure she was his wife. She left without them noticing, and went back to her room. But joy accompanied her. Now, it would only be a matter of days before All was well and they were back home and back to their routine. She would research healthier foods and prepare his meals herself. While she was thinking these things, the door opened and Sarah appeared. “Anna... The boss wants to see you.” “What does he want now?” Anna asked with no intention of confronting the monster. That's what she'd call All's son. “He said he misses you.” Anna rejoiced. It wasn't the 'monster. Only two people would miss him. His father and... All! “All wants to see me? But... His wife was there...” “She still is, but..
Anna entered the room and locked the door. She started pacing back and forth. It couldn't be happening, but it was. She had to be realistic. She couldn't live without the man she loved. He wasn't just the man she loved. He was her only friend. She had no one else. Without him, she had no will to go on living. She looked at the window. She was so distressed, and her thoughts were screaming so loudly in her mind, that she didn't hear the people calling her name, desperate outside the door. She went to the window and tried to pull it up, but it was jammed. She pushed for a while, but the handle wouldn't budge. Anna discovered at that moment that she hated that kind of window. Who had been the asshole who had closed it? She remembered that it had been raining, and the window had probably been closed so that it wouldn't get wet inside. That didn't matter now. She went to the bedside table and picked up the lamp. She began to break the glass of the window and then the sharp shards, a
The two left the house, and Anna realized that it was small, despite having large rooms, it only had two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. From the outside, Anna realized that it was also isolated. The house had a kind of synthetic grass on its walls, very green, covering the whole house. There was a large wall surrounding the house and an electric fence on top. It was a well-guarded place. She passed several men and women in black suits until she reached the gate, along with the woman who let her out, and when she opened the gate, there were more men watching outside. They got into a green car, a jeep, and while the woman was driving, she explained. “There's not usually this much movement around this house, not even when it's occupied...” Anna realized that there was something bad in that story, and that the woman was hesitant to tell her, but she didn't ask. She wasn't interested. She leaned back in the armchair, feeling pain. She kept her eyes closed for just a few second
Anna took All's hand and felt his grip. She began to talk about everything she felt at the news of his illness. She talked about what his son and his foreman had done to her, and then she talked about the house. Anna talked about the mansion so excitedly and with such wonder that she didn't notice Allister's gaze become dark and thoughtful, nor the angry line that formed on his lips. She only noticed his silence. “Something wrong, All?” He forced a smile. “No. I need a lawyer. I've called a reliable lawyer and she should be here any minute... Call my son.” “No. He doesn't like me, and that feeling is mutual. What do you want with a lawyer?” “I need to resolve some issues. It's business I want to get settled. You don't have to think about this bureaucracy.” “I don't know anything about business, but if it's something for me... Just release my father. There's nothing more I want.” Allister seemed to reflect on her words. “I want to ask you for something.” “You
Anna was happy again. This surprised her, as she had thought it impossible. Allister was now sitting down and spending even more time with her. He talked to her about things she didn't understand, but liked to hear anyway, and didn't ask her to leave when she had problems to solve, as he did when she was healthy. His son appeared three times. The look in his eyes was still cold, but there was no longer as much anger in them. His wife also came to visit him. More often than his son. “You need to renew your closet, Anna. I've already decorated all your clothes.” All's wife said one afternoon, after sitting down with a magazine in her hands, as she always did, and reading as if she wasn't in the room. She ignored Anna's presence so naturally that Anna came to believe that she herself was some invisible friend of All's, so surprised was she by his wife's words that it took her a while to realize that it was her she was talking to. “Excuse me?” That was all she could think to
