After the two of them left, I walked unsteadily out of the hotel, a reflection of the heartache that felt so palpable. The surroundings were a blur, hard to grasp. My mind told me the people I passed were looking at me scornfully. Or were they not? Oh my God, I can't control this situation!
My wild thoughts led me to enter a nightclub, and I then headed for the bar, taking a seat in the corner, slightly away from the crowd. I tried to calm myself down, the back of my hand wiping away the tears that were about to fall. Don't let anyone else see them.
A bartender approached. He was wearing a black shirt. His brown hair was neatly combed back. "Welcome! Is there anything I can make for you?"
"Tequila martini, please. Do you have any?" The friendly-faced man nodded slowly. Perhaps he knew that this was the drink I was going to use to forget something. "A strong one," I added before he started mixing the ingredients.
I looked down anxiously. My chest was rumbling. Evan was cheating on me. He'd betrayed me. He'd ruined everything we'd done together.
After a few moments, the bartender returned. "Here you go, one tequini for all your troubles."
No doubt, I choked back a chuckle. I raised the glass to the same height as my head, turning it slightly to stare at the amber-colored liquid reflecting the lamplight. "Fuck you, Evan Lynch!" I hissed and took a sip of the drink. A spicy and warm flavor instantly ran down my throat. This is better... this is better.
As I continued to sip the drink, the bar, which was originally quiet, began to fill with the music and chatter of other customers. I gazed longingly at the glass that was almost empty. What a great thing!
Until then, the shadow of a towering person blocked half the light from reaching me. I turned lazily to him, finding him smiling. He wore a black suit, light blue shirt, and striped tie.
"I'm not interested," I muttered under my breath, then looked down again, weighed down by the weight of a head that suddenly felt like twice my body weight.
Unfortunately, instead of leaving, the man sat down next to me. "Can I join you?"
"You already joined."
He laughed crisply, then called over the bartender. "Can you please serve me a gin? Any kind."
I raised my glass again, intending to take a sip, but there was nothing left. I stared sadly at the glass. Two seconds later, my right hand rose in excitement. "I want another one just like before!"
"Looks like somebody got you pretty hurt tonight," he said, chuckling sweetly.
I ignored him, my eyes focused on the man behind the bar who was concocting my amazing drink. Come on, come on, let's get my drink, Buddy!
My eyes lit up at the glass of amber liquid presented to me. I took another swig, then a tingle appeared in god knows where on my body that made me laugh. I felt like I was at the top of the Himalayas and on the beach in Hawaii at the same time. Gosh, you wouldn't understand.
"Okay, Miss Mia ...." The man beside me spoke again. "You want to tell me about that jerk you keep cursing?"
Am I cursing? Wait, how did he know my name? What's his name? Geez, I didn't even realize what was coming out of my mouth.
"You!" I pointed right at his nose. He laughed softly, puffing the wind in my fingers. "Promise you won't broadcast this on the news!" He looked like a newscaster!
"O-okey...?"
"Sssuuuushhhh!" I pressed his lips with my index finger. "It's my turn to tell the story!"
He did not answer, just nodded in resignation.
"The man I could see my future with... he betrayed me! I did so much for him! That asshole—" I downed another tequini.
The man was still quietly listening. I told him what happened. The beginning of my relationship with Evan, our plans (or maybe it was just me?), his sweet demeanor, and everything. Until all those beautiful images were shattered when I caught him cheating on me with that Cinderella.
"Trying to seduce me, huh?" The sound of his laughter sent a tingle down my spine. I don't know how it happened, but our faces were now very close. I can smell the cologne on his neck. My hand was on his chest. Everything seemed blurry. It was like I jumped to scene one, then scene three, and suddenly arrived at scene six!
"You came to me." My face gets closer, my hand tugs at his tie. Our alcohol-smelling breaths mingled together, struggling in the center. My heart throbbed when our lips touched for a split second. I wanted more.
He pulled away, leaving me feeling abandoned and lonely. His hand grasped mine between us. "Want to get revenge?" His offer was so enticing, it sounded like a good idea.
"Whatever you want to call it."
He laughed softly in my ear. " I'm not usually one to play around." The sound of loud music played in the background.
"Come play with me," I said, more like a plea. My heart was pounding like crazy. And when our lips finally met, it was as if everything stopped, including my heartbeat.
We each pulled away, breathing shallowly and staring at each other. I'd never seen such beautiful green-grey eyes before.
His hand rose to my neck, circled to the nape of my neck and pulled me in for another kiss. I should have stopped. I should have stopped. But I didn't. Somehow, this feels right. I wanted it. I need it.
I didn't remember exactly when he put a few bills on the bar table that I thought were too much. We went up to one of the suites that were available at the nightclub.
I felt his bare abs in the palm of my hand. His lips kissed my neck while his hands undid the buttons of my shirt. With one smooth movement, he managed to drop me on the bed.
From this position, I could see him towering so tall and huge. My eyes weren't clear enough to see all the details, but all I knew was that he was so beautiful.
I could barely make out his movements until he suddenly crawled on top of me. "What do you want?" he whispered, sending a puff of breath across my lips. His fingers glided along my spine.
"Make me forget," I said deliberately, draping my arms around his neck. "I want to lose myself in it for just a little while."
And then his hand went to the nape of my neck, pulling it up until he could kiss me so deeply, so fiercely.
The sky that morning was so blue when I walked out of the nightclub at a quick pace. My face probably reflected a combination of anxiety, guilt, and panic. I had to get back to the unit and prepare for the office. I gulp after a quick glance at my watch. The dizziness and nausea I put aside, even though my body was literally telling me to stop walking fast and rest. Gosh, there's no time! When the door to the apartment building opened, I bumped into someone who was in the hallway. "Oh my, Mia-hai!"Thankfully, it was only Addy. "Hi, Addy. I'm in a hurry. Later, okay?""No, no." Addy intercepted me, making me not bother to hide my objecting face. "I owe you and Evan an apology-""No," I interrupted, instantly remembering last night. "You're right, uh, he cheated on me. But really, let's talk about this later, please? I'm late for work.""All right. Things will get better with time." Addy looked at me with sympathy, but a moment later she grinned jokingly. "I wanted to sympathize with y
"Good afternoon, Mr. Lynch," I greeted, inwardly wondering that he hadn't turned around. However, when he finally turned around, my heart literally stopped beating for a few moments. I recognized him. For mother earth's sake, I really wish I could get out of here. He's that man! The guy who slept with me last night!I suddenly rummaged through my bag, looking for something.**The man intercepted me at the door of the room. He was already wearing his light blue shirt. His hand held out something, a thin black object that was very ordinary. I glanced at it and could only catch the small golden-colored writing.I looked up, giving him a lazy look. "No need," I replied simply. Because I knew this was just going to be a meaningless one-night stand. Or at least I intended it to be. Not accepting anything from him was the main step to forgetting him. I didn't even bother asking his name, which I had already forgotten under the influence of last night's alcohol. I gestured for him to step as
I entered the press office with mixed feelings haunting my mind. River's statement about her relationship with Evan still plagued my mind, as if I couldn't believe it. Every step I took felt so heavy, and uncertainty crept into my mind. It's still unbelievable that I made the decision I did. The bait River had laid out ... I had eaten it whole. He managed to fool me, doing it as if I decided everything myself. Come on, everything seems easy for that man!Emma, who was busy organizing files on her desk, was the first to notice my presence. She raised her head when I entered the room. Her face immediately turned thoughtful, probably because she saw my very gloomy expression. "Hi! Mia, how was your interview with River Lynch?"Almost everyone in the room immediately turned to me, hoping and worrying."Pretty good,'" I replied, not entirely honest. As they continued to watch, I looked at Cody who was grimacing. I hurriedly changed my expression to match what I was saying, making myself lo
My apartment felt empty and dark. I was too lazy to turn on the lights. The faint light came from the city lights and the moonlight filtering through the windowpane whose curtains I hadn't closed earlier. I sat alone on the sofa—I and Evan often had sex on this sofa, dammit—bottles of liquor lined the table, one of which was lying around. The view of the glittering city from the window only made me feel more isolated. The chaos that had haunted me all day seemed to creep into my mind, filling every corner of the room with confusion and despair.I was tired. This day had been exhausting. And chaotic. The doorbell of the apartment rang a while ago. I ignored it.My gaze languished on Evan's suitcases and boxes of belongings. After coming home from work, I took out all his clothes and belongings. However, it didn't take long for me to finally burst into tears.Without thinking, I grabbed a bottle of liquor and gulped it down with a desire to forget everything. Every sip felt like an esca
"Gracie, apparently you're keeping my guest here." A voice behind me made me and the female bartender turn around. I choked on my own saliva. River towered over me in his gray suit."Hello, Mr. Lynch," she greeted, making me hold my breath. "This beautiful woman is your guest? Wait," she paused, looking confused at me. "So the man you're about to meet is Mr. Lynch?""You guys know each other?" I asked frantically, remembering what I'd said a while back about him being a jerk and all.“Yeah,” Gracie replied, then looked at me and River in turn. "This bar belongs to Mr. Lynch."The man then grinned, and suddenly I felt like I wanted to disappear into thin air."Looks like you got lost," he commented, scoffing at me. I couldn't find my voice yet. River turned to look at Gracie. "Let me take it from here, Gracie.""Yeah-yes," Gracie replied, still confused, "sure, Mr. Lynch.""Put whatever this lovely lady ordered earlier on my bill." River dictated to Gracie, who nodded obediently in ret
"Why do you want revenge on Evan?" I asked, my voice tinged with a mix of caution and confusion. It was a loaded question, and I wasn't sure what River's motivation was. The idea of teaming up with someone I barely knew, especially for the purpose of revenge, was a decision that required careful consideration."I'm not looking for revenge, but rather to teach a lesson." River leaned in slightly, his gaze sharp. "Most of the businesses I run... Evan is the sole heir."I was stunned for a few seconds. "He doesn't seem like a wealthy heir," I commented, remembering how ordinary Evan's life was, how he behaved, and...well, everything about him didn't suggest that he would inherit a business I estimated to be worth billions of dollars. "You fooled me?"River chuckled softly. He shook his head and let out a tired sigh, as
"River Lynch here yet?" asked Rory, without me realizing her sudden arrival at the shoot. The day of River's photo shoot with Pamela Magazine had arrived. Rory had given this responsibility to me, as it should be."Yeah," I replied, silently signaling to the Production Coordinator who had been in discussion with me, to get back to his job. "He's all safe with the stylists and Lukas in the dressing room. Do you want to check him out?""No need," Rory replied, checking the notes on the iPad she was holding. Her eyes glanced around the shooting room, making sure everything was going according to plan. "I'm sure things are going well here. But make sure River knows exactly what our editorial team wants."I nodded, taking note of Rory's advice. "Of course. I'll make sure everything goes well. We want a shoot that meets Pamela's expectations."Rory smiled and continued around the room, giving instructions to several team members who were busy with preparations. I returned to my desk, organi
"What have you done to River Lynch?" Rory walked straight up to my desk when she entered the editorial room. Her gaze was serious, making me feel tense. Inside, I wondered what was going on. My mind immediately drifted to the recent River-related incidents."Wh-what happened?" I stammered, stealing glances at Cody and Emma who were both giving me worried and confused looks. However, Rory continued with a mysterious smile, "He made a proposal to Pamela to report on the anniversary of his perfume brand."I glared, but inevitably breathed a sigh of relief. The people who were watching were immediately shocked."Wow, really?" I said, trying hard to hide my worry. "That's certainly a great opportunity for our magazine."Lukas strutted over to my table, looking cheerfully at Rory. "Oh man, is that for real?"Rory nodded, still carving a bright smile on her face. "And he also specifically asked you, Miss Mia Abreu, to head this project."People cheered even more, and the sound of Emma's appl
Hi everyone!I would like to say a HUGE thank you to all of you who have read Revenge in Silk up to this point! I know that some (or many) of you may think that this book is too short, but I did that on purpose to keep the main plot going. I hope you don't mind and will still love this book. I welcome all your love, criticism, and feedback. So, feel free to write what you think in the comment section! I have one more announcement for you guys, that I am planning to make a book series called Revenge Series. I plan to make it consist of three books with the theme "Revenge" with different characters in each book. However, I will still try to include the interconnectedness of all the characters, even though it will only be a little visible. Once again, I would like to thank you all for your support! You have no idea how much I love you guys! With love, Anne Joyce
Looking in the mirror in the bridal room in my wedding dress, I repeatedly exhaled in nervously. I was a picture of pure joy, my cheeks flushed with a rosy glow and my eyes sparkling with love. I couldn't help but smile at my reflection, knowing that in a few hours, I would stand before River and make a promise to love him for the rest of my life. Addy entered the room, her eyes wide with excitement. "Are you ready?" she asked, helping me fasten the remaining buttons of my dress. I took a deep breath and nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be." The anticipation of the ceremony was all-consuming, yet I knew that everything was going to be perfect. As we walked down the aisle, there were sounds of people gasping and rejoicing. My little girl and Danielle (Emma's daughter) walked as the flower girl, I couldn't help but feel warmth in my chest when I remembered how excited Shannon was when she heard that I was going to marry River. She was beaming with joy, her tiny hands holding the bouq
Lost in my thoughts, I didn't hear the sound of footsteps approaching until a voice broke through my ear. "Hello, love," he whispered as his arms wrapped around my stomach. "River ...." My voice was a sigh when I felt his lips kissing my neck. "Let's continue where we left off, shall we?" he teased me, his hands reaching into my pajamas. I leaned back into his embrace, feeling the warmth of his body against mine. The desire that had simmered between us earlier reignited with a fierce intensity, sending sparks flying through my veins. His touch was electric, igniting a fire within me that threatened to consume everything in its path. I turned in his arms, capturing his lips with mine in a passionate kiss that spoke volumes of unspoken promises and longing. As we kissed, the warmth of his hands traveled down to the waistband of my pajamas. He pulled it aside slowly, his fingers tracing the curve of my hip. I could feel the heat of his breath on my skin, sending shivers down my spine.
A few months later, River brought Shannon and me back to Manhattan. Meanwhile, Addy stayed in Chicago. She said she wanted to take her relationship with Shawn more seriously. And after I left with Shannon, Addy invited Shawn to live in the house with her. I gave my half of the rights to the house to Addy for free, more or less as a token of my gratitude for what she had sacrificed for me. I knew it couldn't make up for her help, but at least I felt like my burden was lessened. Shawn was not a typical man, but still he was very kind and considerate. I knew Addy would be safe with him. The thought of my best friend starting a new chapter in her life brought a smile to my face as I watched her wave goodbye to us from the porch. As for River, the past few months had been a whirlwind of emotions and adjustments as he stepped into his role as a father. Watching him bond with Shannon filled my heart with a warmth I hadn't felt in years. It was like witnessing a piece of my past come to lif
His arms enveloped me in a tight embrace, the familiar scent of his cologne bringing back a flood of memories. We clung to each other, seeking solace in the comfort of each other’s presence after all these years apart. The carnival noises faded into the background as we held onto each other, two souls reunited by fate and the passage of time.“Mia, maybe it's too late,” he said softly in my shoulder, “and I'm very sorry for never saying it, but believe me; whether it was then, when you disappeared, until this moment; believe me that I never stopped loving you.”As River's words lingered in the air, a sense of peace washed over me. The tumult of emotions that had consumed me for years seemed to quiet down in that moment. His confession, filled with regret and love, reached deep into my heart, stirring feelings I had long thought buried. I gazed into his eyes, seeing the sincerity and vulnerability laid bare before me.Those words, the words that I wanted to hear three years ago, that R
"River ...." My voice trembled at the mention of that name, a name I still sometimes say in my unconscious.I couldn't think straight, my gaze shifted to the distance, Addy was standing there frozen. Both of her hands were holding the popcorn bucket. And just as my words were about to come out of my mouth, a voice from below broke our focus. "Mommy, why are you crying?"Shannon's innocent question pierced through the tension in the air, grounding me back to reality. I quickly wiped away my tears and crouched down to her eye level, forcing a smile on my face."It's nothing, sweetheart. Mommy's just really happy to see you safe," I replied, my voice quivering slightly as I gathered her in my arms once more.Addy finally snapped out of her daze and came over to where we were, her eyes flitting between Shannon, River, and me with a mixture of confusion and realization."River Lynch," Addy breathed out his name in disbelief, her gaze narrowing as she took in the scene before her. "What are
Hearing Addy's words, for some reason I was reminded of what happened three years ago.**About a week into my stay in Chicago, I was walking home after a cooking class. I saw a stand on the side of the road selling various magazines. There was something in me that drove me to pull up to that stand, maybe I would find something I was looking for. And when I saw a few stacks of magazines with PAMELA written on them with covers I'd never seen before. Without thinking, I bought them right away. When I got home, I couldn't wait to open it, turning the pages one by one, unconsciously shedding tears because of my longing for some of the names written there: Rory Burnett, Emma Freud, Lukas Cheadle, Cody Vargaz, and even my own name that was still written there as Editor of the Feature Section. And there was one more name that I secretly missed, a name printed quite large on one of the special pages: River Lynch and His Beloved Woman! That's what it says. And I opened that special page, eight
"Who's ready to ride the merry-go-round tonight?!" Addy exclaimed excitedly, her eyes sparkling with anticipation as she clapped her hands together. I couldn't help but smile at her infectious energy, knowing that she was just as excited as Shannon for our evening plans. The carnival had rolled into town, its vibrant lights illuminating the night sky. We had been waiting for this day for weeks, and now it was finally here.My daughter's eyes widened with excitement as she clapped her hands, her face lighting up at the mention of the merry-go-round. "Me! Me!" she squealed, bouncing up and down in my arms.I chuckled at her eagerness, feeling a warmth in my chest at the sight of her joy. Setting her down gently, I took her hand in mine as we followed Addy towards the carnival grounds. The carnival grounds were alive with the sounds of laughter and music, the air filled with the scent of cotton candy and popcorn. The colorful lights from the rides danced across Shannon's face, highlighti
Three years later …The sound of laughter filled the air as Addy played peek-a-boo with my daughter in the living room. I smiled from the kitchen at the sound of their voices. A week after moving to Chicago, I decided to sign up for a cooking class for the good of the three of us, considering Addy and the kitchen were also eternal enemies. Other than that, my other goal was to find something to do, so that I wouldn't dwell in sadness for too long.As I dried my hands on a towel, I took a moment to look around our new home. It was a cozy, three-bedroom house with a small backyard, perfect for us. I couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia, thinking about the life we had left behind. Yet, I knew that this was the path we had chosen, and I wanted to make sure that it was the best one possible for my daughter.I really had left everything behind. I changed all my contacts that I could reach, changed my job, and left friends behind to start a whole new life. But one thing remained consta
