The idea ended miserably... and very embarrassingly! I kicked the blanket in the air, then smothered my face with a pillow and screamed as loud as I could. What a fool! What a fool!

The incident a few minutes ago flashed through my mind again. After taking a greedy swig of wine, I pulled the lower part of River's T-shirt collar, intending to bring his face close to mine so that I could tease him. However, due to my raging anger, the force of my hand was too strong. River, who was unprepared and already under the influence of alcohol, was caught off guard and slammed into me, causing me to fall off the high chair with my back and head touching the floor and my feet still caught on the chair legs. Luckily for River, he still had time to hold on to the table attached to the wall. His other hand hung in the air, trying to prevent me from falling, but he wasn't agile enough. For a split second, we glared at each other. It wasn't until later that pain shot through my back and culminated in

(What time are you coming home? I'll pick you up.) The text from River took me by surprise for a moment. Indirectly, he was hinting for me to stay at his place again. I then typed a reply. (I'm staying at my friend's place tonight. Girls' night!) "Is that him?" asked Addy when I showed her River's message. "Evan's uncle?" I nodded. "I think he's worried that Evan will come to my place again." Addy nodded. She was still adapting and digesting the story I was telling her. Seeing me crying because I was devastated a few days ago, it was clear Addy hates Evan, maybe even more than I do. "Until when are you two going to pretend to be lovers?" Addy probed. "Until I get a recommendation from Rory." "Isn't that still long enough?" Addy looked thoughtful. She tucked her brown hair behind her ear. "A year...?" "Ten months," I corrected, then took a sip of the bourbon cocktail I'd ordered, which was already half gone. "That's a long time, M." Addy protested. There was concern on her fac

The digital clock on the table displayed the number 07:21. I observe my looks in the mirror from top to bottom. River's handpicked dress fits my body perfectly. A sleek silk weave shapes this elegant dress with adjustable spaghetti straps and a cowl neckline. The A-line maxi skirt with a thigh-high front slit showcases my legs, which are set in silver ankle-strap high heel sandals. My shoulder-length brown hair was slightly wavy, with a deep side parting. There was a knock on the door, and I invited him to come in. River's figure standing in front of the door is reflected in the mirror. We stare at each other for a few seconds. He was wearing a gray suit that somehow made him look so charming and classy. From inside the mirror, I could see that we looked good together with the clothes we were wearing. "Are you all set?" River asked, breaking our gaze. I exhaled and turned around, staring nervously at River's approaching steps. And when we were only two steps away, River took my righ

"You bastard," I said while pretending to giggle. My hand hit his arm hard, then disguised it with a swipe. I thought he wouldn't bring up that embarrassing incident, dammit! Ha! What could I expect from the bitchy River Lynch?River laughed crisply even though I could tell from his expression that he was in a bit of pain. "You beat me too hard, Mia." He was still trying to disguise his pain with laughter."Who cares," I said as sweetly as I could.River suddenly looked alert. Her eyeballs glanced quickly. "We should kiss.""Excuse me?" I asked, unable to digest his words.River took a step forward, making me reflexively take a step back. However, River's right hand slipped beside my body and kept me from moving away. "They're coming." River rubbed my cheek gently. I was mesmerized for a blink when our eyes met. The feel of River's fingertips on my back made my heart beat crazy for a moment. And when he pressed his lips to mine, I actually remembered what my duty was.The world seemed

A week later ...."Finally got my work done." I let out a long sigh, stretching in the chair as I looked over at Emma's desk. She was still struggling with her computer, looking very focused and couldn't be bothered."Where are you going anyway?" Cody turned his chair to face me.This morning, when I finished the meeting, I asked Rory for permission to be able to leave first, with in exchange I had to finish my work quickly. And I finally did it. Two hours before normal dismissal time. Not too bad."I have an appointment to visit someone," I replied as I tidied up my things."Your family?" asked Lukas suddenly.I thought for a moment. Were they my family? "You could say that," I replied hesitantly.Lukas just nodded, and I assumed he had ended our brief conversation. My bag was tidy and I was ready to go. "I'm going home first. Happy Thanksgiving!""Happy Thanksgiving!" replied Emma, suddenly sounding excited."You too!" Cody and Lukas replied simultaneously. And a few other people.I

I didn't realize when I actually fell asleep until River tapped me lightly on the arm. "Hey, wake up. We're here."My eyes blinked for a moment. The sound of the car door closing brought me fully awake. I looked forward. Benjamin was no longer behind the wheel. My eyes looked around, the car stopped in front of the yard of a magnificent house with a classic design. The soft light from the garden lamps illuminated the yard, giving the house an elegant feel. The shady trees around it give a beautiful impression and add to the beauty of the environment. The house didn't look too big, but the grandeur of the building was reflected in the carefully chosen architectural details."I think I only closed my eyes for two minutes," I yawned, then stretched without caring about River's presence near me. The man gave me a small smile, then leaned in to adjust my hair, which inevitably made me reflexively throw my head back. His hand movements stopped in mid-air, but he tried to disguise it by smo

  • Revenge in Silk   Chapter 19. Are you ready to face Evan?

The next day, when I woke up, River was no longer in bed. I sat up and stretched while yawning widely. For about a minute, I stared blankly at the half-open window, quickly replaying yesterday's events from morning to night. The bathroom door opened, making me turn my head to the source of the sound. River came out of there with only a towel wrapped around his waist. His hair, which was usually neatly combed back, looked messy and wet this time. And sexy. Oh, my goodness!"Hi," I greeted, suddenly feeling silly. He rubbed his feet on the mat while looking at me with nonchalance. "Take a shower, then we will go downstairs together. I think Evan's here."I got out of bed when he had disappeared into the walk in closet. Before going to the bathroom, I poured half a glass of water from the pitcher on the table near the sofa and drank it all down. The smell of River's soap and shampoo greeted me as I entered the bathroom. The warm steam wrapped around me, feeling cozy and pleasant.A few

  • Revenge in Silk   Chapter 20. He loves you very much

Later that evening, River and I watched a soccer game on television. Both our bodies were wrapped in a thin white blanket. He leaned against the back of the sofa, while I leaned against his chest, feeling his left hand curl across my back.I shifted my body to get closer to River when I saw Evan coming down from upstairs. River's left hand went up to my head, rubbing it gently and-seemingly-affectionately. From the tail of my eyes I could see Evan walking past the television room, but I deliberately didn't look at him at all and pretended to focus on watching the television."Is it normal for people to watch soccer while cuddled up in a blanket like this?" River murmured after a moment, confident that Evan was no longer within earshot."I don't know," I replied in a whisper as well, staring blankly at the big screen in front of us that showed two presenters - dressed in navy suits with red and white striped ties - talking about something I didn't understand, referring to soccer terms.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" asked River, hopefully for the last time. I'm sure he didn't really expect me to think when he asked that with his lips still brushing the tip of mine. And from the hardness of the bulge I felt under my ass, River clearly wanted this to end the way Sharon wanted it to. The heat in my body was becoming excruciating. My hands stopped moving on the buttons of his shirt in desperation. "We'll both die if we don't," I replied, then captured River's lips again. My hands quickly remove his shirt, pausing our kiss and allowing River to pull off my sweatshirt as well. His lips go to my neck, while his hands easily remove my bra and toss it carelessly to the floor. "I don't have a condom." River's face suddenly turns frantic, as if he just realized he's missing one ear. "I took a pill," I replied, then grabbed his lips again. Our kisses became deeper and deeper, more demanding, leading us to the brink of passion. River growled as my body writhed and I fel

  • Revenge in Silk   Epilogue

Looking in the mirror in the bridal room in my wedding dress, I repeatedly exhaled in nervously. I was a picture of pure joy, my cheeks flushed with a rosy glow and my eyes sparkling with love. I couldn't help but smile at my reflection, knowing that in a few hours, I would stand before River and make a promise to love him for the rest of my life. Addy entered the room, her eyes wide with excitement. "Are you ready?" she asked, helping me fasten the remaining buttons of my dress. I took a deep breath and nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be." The anticipation of the ceremony was all-consuming, yet I knew that everything was going to be perfect. As we walked down the aisle, there were sounds of people gasping and rejoicing. My little girl and Danielle (Emma's daughter) walked as the flower girl, I couldn't help but feel warmth in my chest when I remembered how excited Shannon was when she heard that I was going to marry River. She was beaming with joy, her tiny hands holding the bouq

  • Revenge in Silk   Chapter 63. You are my woman.

Lost in my thoughts, I didn't hear the sound of footsteps approaching until a voice broke through my ear. "Hello, love," he whispered as his arms wrapped around my stomach. "River ...." My voice was a sigh when I felt his lips kissing my neck. "Let's continue where we left off, shall we?" he teased me, his hands reaching into my pajamas. I leaned back into his embrace, feeling the warmth of his body against mine. The desire that had simmered between us earlier reignited with a fierce intensity, sending sparks flying through my veins. His touch was electric, igniting a fire within me that threatened to consume everything in its path. I turned in his arms, capturing his lips with mine in a passionate kiss that spoke volumes of unspoken promises and longing. As we kissed, the warmth of his hands traveled down to the waistband of my pajamas. He pulled it aside slowly, his fingers tracing the curve of my hip. I could feel the heat of his breath on my skin, sending shivers down my spine.

A few months later, River brought Shannon and me back to Manhattan. Meanwhile, Addy stayed in Chicago. She said she wanted to take her relationship with Shawn more seriously. And after I left with Shannon, Addy invited Shawn to live in the house with her. I gave my half of the rights to the house to Addy for free, more or less as a token of my gratitude for what she had sacrificed for me. I knew it couldn't make up for her help, but at least I felt like my burden was lessened. Shawn was not a typical man, but still he was very kind and considerate. I knew Addy would be safe with him. The thought of my best friend starting a new chapter in her life brought a smile to my face as I watched her wave goodbye to us from the porch. As for River, the past few months had been a whirlwind of emotions and adjustments as he stepped into his role as a father. Watching him bond with Shannon filled my heart with a warmth I hadn't felt in years. It was like witnessing a piece of my past come to lif

  • Revenge in Silk   Chapter 61. May I meet her?

His arms enveloped me in a tight embrace, the familiar scent of his cologne bringing back a flood of memories. We clung to each other, seeking solace in the comfort of each other’s presence after all these years apart. The carnival noises faded into the background as we held onto each other, two souls reunited by fate and the passage of time.“Mia, maybe it's too late,” he said softly in my shoulder, “and I'm very sorry for never saying it, but believe me; whether it was then, when you disappeared, until this moment; believe me that I never stopped loving you.”As River's words lingered in the air, a sense of peace washed over me. The tumult of emotions that had consumed me for years seemed to quiet down in that moment. His confession, filled with regret and love, reached deep into my heart, stirring feelings I had long thought buried. I gazed into his eyes, seeing the sincerity and vulnerability laid bare before me.Those words, the words that I wanted to hear three years ago, that R

  • Revenge in Silk   Chapter 60. Don't you understand, Mia?

"River ...." My voice trembled at the mention of that name, a name I still sometimes say in my unconscious.I couldn't think straight, my gaze shifted to the distance, Addy was standing there frozen. Both of her hands were holding the popcorn bucket. And just as my words were about to come out of my mouth, a voice from below broke our focus. "Mommy, why are you crying?"Shannon's innocent question pierced through the tension in the air, grounding me back to reality. I quickly wiped away my tears and crouched down to her eye level, forcing a smile on my face."It's nothing, sweetheart. Mommy's just really happy to see you safe," I replied, my voice quivering slightly as I gathered her in my arms once more.Addy finally snapped out of her daze and came over to where we were, her eyes flitting between Shannon, River, and me with a mixture of confusion and realization."River Lynch," Addy breathed out his name in disbelief, her gaze narrowing as she took in the scene before her. "What are

  • Revenge in Silk   Chapter 59. I would love to marry her

Hearing Addy's words, for some reason I was reminded of what happened three years ago.**About a week into my stay in Chicago, I was walking home after a cooking class. I saw a stand on the side of the road selling various magazines. There was something in me that drove me to pull up to that stand, maybe I would find something I was looking for. And when I saw a few stacks of magazines with PAMELA written on them with covers I'd never seen before. Without thinking, I bought them right away. When I got home, I couldn't wait to open it, turning the pages one by one, unconsciously shedding tears because of my longing for some of the names written there: Rory Burnett, Emma Freud, Lukas Cheadle, Cody Vargaz, and even my own name that was still written there as Editor of the Feature Section. And there was one more name that I secretly missed, a name printed quite large on one of the special pages: River Lynch and His Beloved Woman! That's what it says. And I opened that special page, eight

"Who's ready to ride the merry-go-round tonight?!" Addy exclaimed excitedly, her eyes sparkling with anticipation as she clapped her hands together. I couldn't help but smile at her infectious energy, knowing that she was just as excited as Shannon for our evening plans. The carnival had rolled into town, its vibrant lights illuminating the night sky. We had been waiting for this day for weeks, and now it was finally here.My daughter's eyes widened with excitement as she clapped her hands, her face lighting up at the mention of the merry-go-round. "Me! Me!" she squealed, bouncing up and down in my arms.I chuckled at her eagerness, feeling a warmth in my chest at the sight of her joy. Setting her down gently, I took her hand in mine as we followed Addy towards the carnival grounds. The carnival grounds were alive with the sounds of laughter and music, the air filled with the scent of cotton candy and popcorn. Three years later …The sound of laughter filled the air as Addy played peek-a-boo with my daughter in the living room. I smiled from the kitchen at the sound of their voices. A week after moving to Chicago, I decided to sign up for a cooking class for the good of the three of us, considering Addy and the kitchen were also eternal enemies. Other than that, my other goal was to find something to do, so that I wouldn't dwell in sadness for too long.As I dried my hands on a towel, I took a moment to look around our new home. It was a cozy, three-bedroom house with a small backyard, perfect for us. I couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia, thinking about the life we had left behind. Yet, I knew that this was the path we had chosen, and I wanted to make sure that it was the best one possible for my daughter.I really had left everything behind. I changed all my contacts that I could reach, changed my job, and left friends behind to start a whole new life. But one thing remained consta
