ELEANOR

My eyes met Sophie who stood by the door with her hands folded across her chest. I jerked my head towards Jeremy who had been silent since he plopped his tiny ass on the couch in my office.

“What’s wrong with him?” I mouthed while subtly pointing at him.

“I don’t know” She mouthed back and shrugged.

Jeremy laid across the couch with his brows furrowed while twirling a pen between his fingers as he stared at the ceiling, lost in his thoughts.

“Penny for your thoughts?” I asked and he glanced at me.

“What?” He asked, having not heard my previous question.

“You’ve been quiet since you came in which is unusual for your loud ass so something’s up. What is it?”

He sighed and sat up with a grimace “You are not going to like this”

I got serious, closing the opened file on my table and pushing it aside as I gave him my full attention. “Out with it”

“Victoria is digging into Eleanor Sterling”

“What?” I froze in shock “How deep?”

Jeremy shrugged, frustrated “I don’t know but one of th

Like all the others I had worn in the last few months since I'd been back, the dress was body-fitted but I barely felt it. It wasn’t because it wasn’t tight, but because my mind was elsewhere, scheming. I knew tonight was going to be tough. Everywhere with Theon was like that. Filled with people underestimating me and what I could do while trying to bully me. They never learn. Theon wouldn’t give me details of the function, so I had no idea who was going to be present there and Jeremy was busy with a school project, so I didn’t want to have him hacking into Theon’s secretary to find details. And I didn't trust any other person enough to let them do the work as well. “You don’t have to worry that you are going in blind today. ELEANOR “I think you are more excited about the visit than Mils” Sophie teased. Today, it was just going to be the two of us, so I had given the driver a day off, so Sophie was driving. It had been almost two months since I saw my baby and I missed him like crazy. I couldn’t risk Theon seeing Milo, so I had him and Jeremy living at a secluded location far from where Theon or his family lived. I didn’t want them to run into each other. “I miss my baby, Soph. I hate every minute that I am away from him. He is growing so fast, and I am missing important parts of his childhood” Sophie softened and reached over to hold my hand “You are doing this to protect him” “I know but I still hate it” I mumbled, and she laughed softly. We arrived at the house, crawling with security on my insistence. The car rolled to a stop in front of the entrance and my shoulders eased. I was home. The only one that mattered. ELEANOR The soft rustling of silk and lace filled the air as I twirled softly for the second time to admire the wedding dress I had on in front of the mirror. The dress clung to me in all the right places, accentuating my slender frame before cascading to the floor. I was currently in the private show room of Bridal Dreams, a shop owned by the renowned Lisabelle Jones, the most sought-after bridal dress designer in the country and this was my fourth fitting so far. My wedding was going to be happening in less than a week and I couldn’t wait. Every move I made was filled with nerves as though something would go wrong but it’s so close now and I couldn’t wait any more. It still felt like a dream even though I knew it wasn’t. I was finally going to be the bride I always dreamed of. I turned to my best friend, Isla who was sitting on the couch behind me. “So, what do you think?” I asked, my voice edged with excitement and nervousness. Isla Crawford, my best friend since childho

ELEANOR It was time for the engagement dinner, and we were currently in the grand dining hall of the Blackwell’s estate. The place was a show of luxury. Every piece looked like it cost millions of dollars, and it made me go back to my discussion with Isla. I guess I could consider myself lucky. I was sitting beside Theon, my fingers curled tightly around my glass as I forced a smile on my face while pretending that Theon’s cold behaviour wasn’t getting to me. He had been distant ever since I walked through the door and while this cold demeanor was nothing new, I had expected him to be a bit warmer since the night was for us. I know some people would say Theon didn’t love me since he wasn’t very vocal about his feelings, but I had learnt to read the unspoken language of his subtle gestures. His love for me was present in the way his hand rested on the back of my chair anytime I sat close to him or how he always positioned himself between me and anything that would cause me the s

ELEANOR The world tilted beneath my feet, and I held on to the chair, so I didn’t fall from the sway that rocked me. The whispers around me grew but none of it mattered. At that moment, I didn’t care about the whispers, the horrified and disgusted expressions, the accusing eyes. None of them mattered. The only thing that mattered was him. “Theon, please” I choked out, forcing my legs to move as I ran after him. Theon didn’t stop. He didn’t even glance back when my leg made contact with a chair, and I winced out in pain. I managed to grab his sleeve, desperate for him to listen to me first. “Theon, listen to me. At least let me explain” I voiced desperately “These emails, the photos, they are fake. I don’t know who did this and why, but I swear to you, I would never betray you” My world stilled as he stopped. I waited for him patiently but desperately as he turned to me but the man who turned to me wasn’t the same one, I had planned to marry. “Theon” I whispered, my voic

ELEANOR The beeping of the hospital monitors was the only thing keeping me company in the quiet room. I sat beside my father’s bed, my hand gripping his tightly as I prayed to whatever was up there to save my father. And maybe my relationship. Dad was still unconscious, and I couldn’t help but blame myself. I caused this. Everyone else thought the same as well. The doctor had said he fainted because his blood pressure was high so we needed to make sure he avoided anything that would stress him out. Mom had not looked at me since. She stayed at the other end of the bed and had not stopped crying as well. I knew she blamed me. I could see it in her body’s telltale signs that she blamed me. “Aiden” Mom suddenly called out and I looked up to see that Dad had indeed woken up. His eyes fluttered open and he looked around the room first to see where he was. A shaky breath of relief escaped my lips and my eyes watered from the relief, but my relief was short-lived when I saw the emotio

THEON I didn’t know how to feel or react. The only thing I was certain of was that betrayal had a taste, and I didn’t like it. It was bitter, metallic like blood and lingered even though hours had passed since I first tasted it. I sat in my home office, staring at the countless articles written about Eleanor. Images and accusations lined every title, each one more vicious than the last. They were not taking it easy on her and somehow; I felt responsible. Eleanor and I had met after an arranged blind date by our families, and I had to be truthful when I said I wasn't fond of her at first. I had met countless girls like her in my grandfather's effort to make sure I got a wife. I didn't know how it happened. Maybe it was her persistence, but I became fond of her. I looked forward to every meeting. I wanted to be around her all the time. I wanted to touch her, spoil her. Maybe I was not as open in my affection, but I tried. Did my lack of display push her to betray me? Was I so des

ELEANORFIVE YEARS LATERI lingered and I hated that I did. I was not supposed to, but I guess this was a big moment. It was something I had carefully crafted for years, and it was time for it to happen.“Don’t hesitate, Eleanor. They won’t recognize you anyway” I muttered to myself and took a deep breath.I held on to my limited edition pursed and stepped into the room. The moment I stepped in through the oversized double doors of the grand ballroom where the event was happening, the air became electric, and the attention shifted to me.The room that had been loud with chatter, laughter and excitement became quiet as all eyes turned to me.Yes. I wanted to scream out loud while wearing a proud grin, but I couldn’t. The image I wore wouldn’t permit me to act so foolishly like a child.Everyone’s attention was drawn to me immediately. Their eyes held more than mere curiosity. I could taste the awe, the intrigue and the envy and God, did it taste and feel amazing.I was back.I could s

ELEANOR “Are you ready?” Theon asked, meeting me in the living area of our suite. He hadn’t been happy since my decision to stay alone, but that was his problem. “Yes. Let’s go” Sophie handed me my purse, and we left. Today, Theon was going to formally introduce me to the Board as his wife and a new addition to the Group. If Theon had his way, I wouldn’t have anything to do with the group, but he had no choice. Every Blackwell had to contribute to the success of the empire, and I was no exception. I wouldn't be given any official position since I had my investment firm to run, but I could contribute and make minor decisions during meetings as his wife and a member of the board. Theon sat quietly across from me in the car as we rode to the corporation headquarters. His head was buried in his phone as he typed furiously with a frown on his face. “You have to be careful during the meeting,” he finally said, breaking the silence as he lifted his head to look at me “The board is

ELEANOR The wedding was finally over, and I couldn’t be more relieved. I had spent hours greeting and thanking the guests who had taken time out of their precious busy schedules to attend a wedding they literally salivated over. Currently, my attention was on Victoria as she conversed with the first lady, smiling as though she had won the lottery. “Elle darling, come here and greet the first lady” I blinked twice to check if it was indeed Victoria who was talking to me. Her smile was so wide, it was almost creepy and the pride on her face as she gestured me over had got the be the fakest genuine expression she had seen. I needed her to sign me up for her acting class. All A-list actors and actresses on the big screen must have had the acting coach who taught her as their teacher. I searched for Theon, and he was busy with the president himself, so I had no choice. Sophie had taken Jeremy back home on my orders. I didn’t want him to stay long enough for people to start asking

ELEANOR Today was the wedding. It was my first wedding, but I felt nothing as I stood in front of the mirror. The wedding was everything I had ever dreamt of what my wedding would be. The wedding gown Theon had gotten for me on his insistence was even better than the first one I was supposed to wear five years ago. My eyes were cold as I met them in the mirror. I felt no trace of joy, flutters of excitement or anticipation that I would have if I were Eleanor. Because this wasn’t a fairytale. This was war, and I was about to step onto the battlefield. I reminded myself silently. “At least try to smile. You look like you’re being held hostage,” Jeremy muttered behind me, and I looked through the mirror at him. I wanted to keep Jeremy hidden, but he had insisted on giving me away today. When I told him that Theon was suspicious of my identity, he suggested that showing him as my brother would squash Theon’s suspicions, since Eleanor was an only child. “I can’t. It’s not like it's

ELEANORIf I had my way, I wouldn’t be here but Jeremy called me and said Victoria had instigated some gullible women to bully me whenever they saw me.It was such a childish move considering the kind of person I knew she was. Was her urgency to get me out of the way making her run out of options?Anyway, I told Sophie I was going to come to the small gathering of socialites so I could give the women in her circle the opportunity to play bully. Immediately I entered the room, the conversation halted and instead, murmurs rose as they eyed me while they judged. Like I said earlier, children. I smiled, unbothered by their veiled disdain and envy and walked to the middle of the room where I had Sophie book me a table at the function. The person I had bet my money would be the first to speak approached me and took a seat beside me.Marjorie Sinclair, wife of Nathan Sinclair, a powerful man with an even bigger shipping company but not bigger than the Blackwells. She was dressed to perfec

AUTHOR’S POVThe next morning, the world woke up to the announcement of the engagement between Elle Davenport and Theon Blackwell. Every major news outlet, social media blogs, and gossip pages had the news on their front page. They were all going into a frenzy. Comments sections were flooded with the same set of questions.Who was Elle Davenport?Where did she come from? How did she appear from nowhere and get engaged to Theon in less than a month?Nobody knew anything about her. Even the influencers who were popular for knowing everything about elites had no idea about her past or where she came from. Victoria Blackwell threw her tablet across the room. The object hit the wall with a loud clash and hit the floor. The screen turned black immediately but it did nothing to soothe the rage she felt. “That snake” she hissed with barely concealed fury “She managed to get her way after all. How dare Theon not listen to me?”Her assistant, Lara stood stiffly with wide eyes and tremblin

ELEANORAfter dinner, the maids cleared the table but the atmosphere was still tense but I didn’t mind. I loved tense places. I thrived better in them.“Theon, there is something I have to discuss with you. It has to do with those new deals” Julian spoke up.“Let’s go to my office then,” Theon answered, getting up.He turned to me “Excuse us” He said and left with Julian. I pondered if I should just go home or wait for him since I didn’t have anything else to do or say to anyone. Victoria had gotten a feel of her opponent and she had been quiet since. I didn’t believe she was done, I just knew she was cooking something in that sly head of hers but maybe it was for later. However, as soon as I heard a door opened and closed in the distance suggesting that Theon and Julian had entered his office, the atmosphere changed again as Victoria cleared her throat. She took her glass of wine and sipped it slowly and I could feel her gaze at the side of my head so I turned to meet her gaze.Ma
