09. Contracted

Thomas's entrance was like a breath of cold air in the stifling room. Eva's cruel smile faltered for a moment, but she quickly pulled herself together, throwing him a disdainful glance.

"Nothing much, dear. Just a little chat with... our candidate for governess." Eva emphasized the word "candidate", as if it were something insignificant, of no importance.

I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm as Thomas looked at me. His eyes assessed the situation, and although there was no apparent emotion on his face, I sensed that he knew something deeper was going on there. Eva, on the other hand, remained impassive, as if she were absolutely in control.

"I hope Eva was... fair to you, Bianca." He finally spoke, his voice low and controlled, as he walked to the center of the room. His presence was overwhelming, and even Eva seemed more tense with his proximity.
