Nicholas turned to see Jessica, who should be in the hospital, standing at the door. What was going on? "What was she doing here and not there?" "Why was she even here even after he had broken up with her?" he thought as he got out of bed and casually picked up his pants from the floor.
"Jessica, aren't you supposed to be at the hospital?" he said, raising his brows as he put on his trousers.
Jessica was stunned by his words. Was that what he was supposed to be asking her after what she had just witnessed? "Aren't you supposed to be at the hospital?" Wow!
"I was in the hospital for 7 days, 7 whole days, and not even once did you come to see me. Yet you have the time to have sex with my cousin? My own cousin, Nicholas!" She was furious, her anger evident in her voice.
"Well, it's a good thing you caught us. At least this, I believe, will help you move on." He leaned on the side of the door with his arms folded across his chest as he stared at Jessica. Her mouth gaped open; she couldn't believe what she was hearing. Had he really broken up with her the way he did because of her cousin?
"W...what did you just say?" she stuttered.
He lifted his body from the door, his eyes still fixated on her. "Like I told you earlier over the phone, I came to the hospital and met with the doctor two days after the accident. He told me everything. You see…"
He walked around her. "I was so infatuated with the thought of getting married to a pretty medical doctor that earned a decent living, someone I could be proud to show off to my grandmother and the entire family."
He stood in front of her, glaring at her with a look of contempt in his eyes. "Imagine the pain I felt when I realized you would never get to use your hand again. I cannot date a disappointment, let alone marry one."
A piercing sound cut through the air as Jessica's hand landed on Nicholas' face. "You wanted to marry me just because of my profession as a medical doctor?" Her voice quaked with a mix of pain and fury.
Nicholas clutched his face where he had just been struck. It stung pretty bad, but he managed to maintain his composure. He was the second son of a rich family, born with a golden spoon in his mouth; no one had ever dared to slap him
. After being slapped by Jessica, his face became very stern. "Don't you ever hit me again!", he said through gritted teeth "£nd yes, you heard me, Jessica. We can't be together anymore. Get over it!"
He looked over his shoulder at Sonia, who held the bedsheet over her body, staring at both of them as if she were stunned, when in fact, she wasn't. "At least your cousin is a medical doctor; she would serve as your replacement."
Everything was playing out as Sonia wanted it to. She had been jealous of Jessica for a very long time. She wanted everything Jessica had. Even when Jessica decided to study Medicine, Sonia also decided she wanted to go into the same field of study.
Jessica, who didn't know anything about her jealousy, as she had always done a good job at hiding it, doted on her. She always trusted her. Their relationship was so strong, and Jessica even considered her her best friend. She was the only other person aside from her mom and fiancé who would have her back at any time in this cruel world.
Jessica looked over at Sonia with disdain. "How could you do this to me, Sonia? How could you sleep with..." She wanted to mention her fiancé, but he wasn't that anymore, not after what she had just witnessed. "...Nicholas? How could you betray me this way? You are family, I trusted you. If anyone could ever do this to me, I would never believe it would be you!"
"I am so sorry, Jessica. I don't know what came over me. It was a mistake. Please forgive me," Sonia pleaded while she rejoiced deep inside. This was all her plan after all. She had gotten information from a friend of hers who was a nurse working at the hospital where Jessica was admitted that Jessica was getting discharged this morning.
After getting the information, she knew the first place Jessica would want to visit was Nicholas' apartment to sort things out with him regarding their breakup. Knowing how much Jessica loved him, she didn't want to take any chances because it was possible Jessica would plead with Nicholas, and he would take her back out of pity.
She couldn't let that happen. She needed to make Jessica so angry she wouldn't beg. Bearing this in mind, Sonia knew she had to act quickly. She went to Nicholas' apartment very early in the morning, and as luck would have it, Jessica arrived at just the right moment.
She smiled inwardly; everything was working out perfectly in her favor. The only reason she was pretending to be sorry was because of Nicholas. She didn't want him to think this was all she had wanted all along. She wanted him to think her humane and empathetic.
"I am so sorry, Jessica. I never planned for it to happen this way. Th... this affair has been going on for just a little over a year," she confessed with a stutter as she clutched tightly to the bed sheet around her body. She was gloating inside. This was her moment. She had finally made Jessica know that it didn't just start now; it had been going on for a while.
"You mean you have been sleeping with each other for over a year now, right under my nose?"
"I wanted everything to stop. It was going to stop once you both got married. I planned on leaving Nicholas for you. I love you so much I didn't want to hurt you like that," Sonia sobbed.
Jessica shook her head. "You don't need to apologize. There is absolutely nothing to forgive." She bent down, picked up her bag, stood up straight, and locked eyes with Nicholas. "You can have him all to yourself. He was always a scumbag to begin with. Too bad I let myself be blindsided."
Jessica stormed out, walking gracefully down the hallway. She wouldn't break down in front of them, and she wouldn't let them have the last laugh.
As soon as she got to the staircase, hot tears flowed freely down her cheeks as she laughed painfully and muttered to herself, "Oh Lord, what a fool I have been. Mum had always been right."
Jessica and her mother often had clashes and misunderstandings because of Nicholas. At one time, her mother had told her, "I wish the wool over your eyes would fall off so that you can see this man for who he truly is." Now it dawned on her just how right her mother had been.
All the thoughts of begging Nicholas to take her back had vanished immediately she saw him with her cousin. She could forgive anything, but never a cheating partner.
She got outside the apartment, the bright sunlight shining onto her face, making her very lightheaded. Although Jessica had had a quick recovery, she was advised by the doctor not to stress herself to avoid complications. Unfortunately, she had stressed herself beyond her limit during her confrontation with Nicholas and Sonia.
She staggered and fell to the floor. Just before she became unconscious, she saw the face of a very handsome man looking down at her. He wore a frown on his face, and there was just a certain coldness about his gaze.
"Get her into the car immediately," she heard him say before slipping into unconsciousness.
Jessica woke up in the hospital again. This scene was becoming too familiar to her. She immediately jerked up from the bed. She heard voices outside the door and footsteps approaching. The door opened, and three men walked in: the doctor, a tall man with a striking figure, and an average-sized man who stood behind the tall one. Jessica looked at the tall, elegant man; he was oddly familiar. His extremely handsome face was masked in a cold and vicious aura. He had a height of at least 6'3 and wore a well-tailored blue suit that outlined his muscular yet slender body. With his natural dark hair and cold blue eyes, he gave off an impeccable aura. He must have been the person who brought her to the hospital because he had been the last person she saw before drifting into unconsciousness. But that was not the only place she had seen him. She racked her brain, trying to remember where she had seen the strange man before. "She is awake already. I told you she wouldn't take long to regain
Jessica stared at the door for a long moment after they had left. Her thoughts drifted back to the day's events. Her phone suddenly rang in her bag, startling her. She walked over to the table and retrieved it. A quick glance at the screen revealed that it was her mother calling. She answered the call."Hello, Mum.""Sorry, this number was saved as 'My Baby girl,' so I assumed you'd recognize the owner of this phone," a deep male voice came through the phone. Jessica double-checked the phone to ensure it was indeed her mother's number displayed on the screen. Why was someone else calling her with her mother's phone? She wondered."Hello, are you there?" The man's voice broke the silence."Yes… yes, sorry, what did you say?" Jessica replied, her confusion evident."Are you related to the owner of this phone?""Yes, she's my mother," Jessica's eyes darkened, "who are you, and why are you calling me with my mother's phone?""Calm down, Miss. Your mum was knocked down by a driver. It was
Jessica saw a man in grey pants and a blue shirt with a tie fixed around his neck. He had a mysterious aura about him, with dark hair, a slender body, and a perfectly structured face. He could easily be a model; maybe he was one. She noticed him looking around frantically and immediately knew he must be the one.She stood up and rushed towards him. She had been sitting in the waiting area, as the receptionist had told her that loitering around the premises was highly prohibited."Excuse me, Mister," the man spun around to look at Jessica. He was incredibly good-looking, but that was the least of Jessica's concerns. All she cared about right now was her mother. "Are you the one I've been communicating with over the phone?"."It depends," he said sarcastically, "Are you the one whose mother was involved in a hit-and-run accident?" He arched an eyebrow. How can someone be so arrogant and kind at the same time?, Jessica thought."Yes, that's me. Please take me to her.""Follow me." Jessica
Jessica, with a calm tone, replied, "It's Jessica, the woman you saved earlier today and proposed a..." She halted herself, realizing the importance of maintaining secrecy around the contract marriage. Only the two of them and his personal assistant should be privy to this information.Justin's fame made confidentiality crucial. If the doctor or even this stranger discovered it, the news could spread rapidly. She couldn't afford to take any chances.Jessica walked to the door, opened it, and moved to an isolated location to ensure her privacy."I am ready to do what you asked," Jessica declared.Justin furrowed his brows, "What I asked? What was that?"Jessica rolled her eyes, impatient with the back-and-forth. She spelled it out clearly. "I'm ready to enter into a contract marriage with you.""Okay, come to the address on the card and sign the papers. Let's make it official.""Okay, I will..." The call abruptly ended before she could finish her sentence. She redialed the number. This
Jessica opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She shut them and just stared at him. The enigmatic glint in his eyes as he gazed into hers made her very uneasy. He finally drew in a long breath, "I thought as much." Glancing at his gold-plated wristwatch that looked like it had cost a fortune, he said without looking at Jessica, "I really should be on my way right now."He looked up from staring at his wristwatch, their eyes met. He immediately wore a serious expression, "I hope your mum's surgery goes well, and I also wish her a quick recovery after that.""Thank you," was all Jessica could mutter as she cleared her throat of the lump that had formed there."Goodbye, Jessica," Lawrence said and held her gaze for a brief moment before turning around. With long strides, he left the premises. Jessica stared at his retreating figure. When he was finally out of sight, she heaved a sigh of relief."What a day it has been," she thought to herself as she sank into the seat behind h
Kelvin led Jessica to Justin's study upstairs. The room's interior was painted in grey, matching Justin's personality. Kelvin opened the door, ushered her in, and closed it behind her. Jessica was now alone with Justin. She felt very nervous. She couldn't understand why she was feeling this way. There was just something about Justin that made her feel uneasy. His facial features were attractive. He hadn't even looked up from the papers he was working on; he just acted as if he were the only one in the room, ignoring her presence. This made Jessica feel even more uncomfortable."Mhm mhm," she cleared her throat, trying to draw his attention. He looked up, his indifferent dark eyes sweeping briefly through her entire body before he diverted his gaze back to the papers in front of him."I see you have come," his voice was as cold as ice. Jessica didn't know how to respond, so she kept quiet. He looked up at her again. "Please, have a seat, Ms. Jessica," he leaned back in his chair and st
He walked stealthily towards them in long strides, holding his suit jacket in his hand. Jessica couldn't take her eyes off him; he had a very intriguing aura about him. Why did he ask Kelvin to hold on? Did he want to join them? Jessica thought. As soon as he got to them, he stretched out his hand and demanded the car keys from Kelvin."I'll drive; I have somewhere I need to be right now." Kelvin looked at his boss in shock. He wanted to argue, but the menacing look Justin shot him left him no chance to do so. He immediately handed the keys to him. His mind was filled with so many thoughts at once. What if Justin had a panic attack on the way? What would happen then? He couldn't risk his boss getting into an accident. It was his life's mission to protect Justin, and he wouldn't fail at his job.Kelvin looked over at Jessica, "Can you drive, Ms. Jessica?" She was surprised. "Yes, why?""Nothing really, I just wanted to know."Kelvin knew that asking her that wasn't enough. There was no
Jessica immediately recognized the voice of the person on the other side of the call. It was Kelvin, Justin's assistant."Kelvin!" she called out as she glanced at Justin, who was still on the floor."You need to call 911 now!" Jessica's voice was filled with panic."Calm down, Ms. Jessica. Just tell me where you are," Kelvin tried to get her to reveal her location. As soon as Justin drove out of the house with Jessica by his side, Kelvin rushed into the house and took the keys to the black Mercedes Benz. He knew he had to follow Justin from behind just in case something happened on the way.He feared that Justin might have one of his panic attacks. He drove two cars behind them. He had been right behind them until two other cars managed to overtake him, keeping him two cars behind. He suddenly noticed that the car wasn't moving as it should. That was his cue that something was wrong. Before he could catch up with them, the car had suddenly disappeared into the bush. He followed after
A month later, at the Hemsworth family mansion, everyone is seated at the round dining table, having a family dinner. Nicholas's health was totally restored. He had also helped the police in apprehending Kennedy and his men, who were already behind bars. Sonia had also been prosecuted, and her license was revoked due to her crimes.Nicholas's last request before being prosecuted for his own crimes was to have dinner with everyone in the family, a request they all had granted. Everyone tried to put on a smiling face, even though their hearts ached on the inside. The energy in the room was really low. Nicholas, noticing this, raised a glass and clanked it with a spoon to get everyone's attention as he cleared his throat. All sets of eyes were averted towards him as everyone eagerly waited to hear what he would say.Nicholas smiled brightly as his eyes swept across the faces at the dining table, acknowledging each of them in an endearing manner. "Father, Justin, Grandmother, Mother, Je
Deep in thought, Justin drove to Jessica's mother's apartment. It had been two weeks since his discharge from the hospital. Two days after leaving the hospital, under persistent pressure from his grandmother and stepmother concerning Nicholas, Justin reached a decision. He chose to implore Jessica to perform the surgery on Nicholas, solely to prevent him from dyinf. This decision didn't signify forgiveness. In fact, he adamantly declined to visit Nicholas in the hospital. Fearful of what he might do to him as he remained vengeful and resentful, harboring deep anger for all he had endured at Nicholas' hands. The problem, however, was that Jessica had refused to treat Nicholas. In fact, they had engaged in an argument that led to her moving out of his apartment. All attempts to persuade her to reconsider proved fruitless. Since then, he had been trying to reach Jessica through her mother, with whom she had sought refuge.Surprisingly, when he called her mother that morning to inquire a
Having recovered from the shock of Jessica's stern attitude, Nicholas looked at her with pleading eyes. Determined to make it work, he ensured everything he said seemed to come directly from his heart. Although he had mentally rehearsed this moment repeatedly, he didn't anticipate the scene playing out so soon. When he asked his father to help him plead with Jessica the previous day, he hadn't expected his wish to be granted. However, knowing he would see Jessica one day, he prepared ahead of time. Now, she stood before him. This was his opportunity, and he promised himself to make the most of it.Rising from the bed, his gaze fixed on Jessica, Nicholas's hand was cuffed to the bed, limiting his movement. Despite the constraint, he had enough room to do what he wanted. Jessica's eyes narrowed with hatred as she witnessed his eyes clouding with tears.Scoffing, she remarked, "I am listening. Say what you want to say; I need to be on my way soon." She eagerly waited for him to beg her
Mr. Hemsworth arrived at the hospital with his mother and wife an hour later and stormed in the direction of Nicholas' ward. He had informed the hospital earlier that day to update him once his son woke up. The hospital was heavily guarded, as two sons of the most powerful and influential man in London, whose lives were still in imminent danger, were in different wards. For all Mr. Hemsworth knew, the culprit who had shot his second son was still at large. Until apprehended, Nicholas and even Justin were not safe. Who knows, the person trying to kill Nicholas might be attempting to cover up a dark past. Justin had mentioned that Nicholas was working with a cult. Could it be they wanted to silence Nicholas for good to prevent him from confessing to his crimes and thereby mention their involvement in money laundering and the attempt on Justin's life?Whatever it was, he would hear it now that his son was awake. As soon as they entered Nicholas' ward, Mr. Hemsworth motioned for the gua
The doctor suddenly remembered he had given the nurse a task earlier and asked her to inform him as soon as it was completed. That had to be what she had come to tell him about. He corked a brow up and asked curiously, "Are the test results out?" Laura nodded in response to his question. She wore a grave expression on her face, which was really unsettling to Mr. Hemsworth, who was clueless about what was going on."What test results? Can someone explain to me what exactly is going on here?" he snapped in frustration. The doctor immediately felt the need to explain before things escalated any further. "I am sorry, Mr. Hemsworth, for keeping you in the dark. The thing is, in this hospital, it is standard procedure to conduct a full check-up on our patients to ensure they are medically fit," he exchanged glances with the nurse and continued, "we ran some tests on Nicholas, and it appears the results are out," he concluded.Mr. Hemsworth was a little tense. The girl's reaction hinted t
Mr. Hemsworth stormed into the hospital an hour later with his bodyguards, looking as ferocious and angry as ever. No one dared to stop him; just the sight of him alone was very intimidating. The security stationed at the entrance had to make way for him after seeing how he had been greeted by the policemen. They already knew who he was; if the police, sent to protect the hospital, had allowed him to gain entrance at this crucial time when security was heightened, then they felt they had no choice but to do the same.Nicholas had been brought to the hospital in his disguised state, so the security men had no clue who the person being protected in the ward was. The hospital kept his identity a secret, and only people who had the right to know due to a role they had to play were informed. Seeing Mr. Hemsworth storm in, the security men gave each other a knowing look; whoever was being protected must be related to him in some way.Once inside, Mr. Hemsworth stood still as his ferociou
The man who had accidentally knocked Nicholas down immediately alighted from his car. Upon reaching where Nicholas lay in a pool of his blood, being washed away by the soft patter of rain falling, he gasped in shock but immediately recollected himself. "Is he dead?" he thought in fright as he fell to his knees beside Nicholas."Hello? Hello?" he said as he shoved Nicholas lightly. No response!"Oh my God! What have I done?" the man cried in fear. His heart was thumping heavily against his chest. With trembling hands, he brought out his phone and dialed 999, London's emergency contact."I knocked down a man; he needs help!" he cried as soon as the call connected, staring down nervously at Nicholas. The road was a lonely one. He contemplated carrying Nicholas into his car and taking him to a nearby hospital. He glanced at Nicholas' unconscious body again, and a thought crossed his mind, one that chilled him to the bone, causing his jaw to drop as his eyes widened."What if he is dead?
As soon as Jessica turned, a slight frown etched her face. Standing behind her was Dr. Martins, the same man she had heard from Nicholas, accused her of having a hand in the attack on her husband. When Dr. Martins found out few days ago, just like everyone else, that Jessica was Dr. Alexandra, he was absolutely gobsmacked. He wondered how that could be and thought back to the day Jessica was acting a little nonchalant in his office, realizing it was because she already had a solution to her husband's predicament. He had been scared to approach her due to the way he had treated her in the past—all the snide and sarcastic remarks he made in her presence hadn't gone unnoticed. From the beginning, he had made it clear he really didn't like her, but Jessica always responded to his ill treatment with kindness. To him, she was just acting, being the badass actress she was, which even infuriated him more.Pondering on the next steps to take, he had summoned the courage to meet Dr. Alexandra,
Sonia was petrified, visibly shaken. Just who is this man, she wondered? The seconds it took for the man to respond felt like a million years to her. Her heart kept thumping against her ribcage."Who am I?" the man asked mockingly as he snorted a laugh. Sonia's eyes widened.Hearing the man speak again intensified her fear. She knew she had heard that voice before, but to whom did it belong? She cried pleadingly, "Please don't hurt me. Whoever you are, please don't harm me.""Hahaha, you should have thought of that when you decided not to keep to your own end of the bargain. Now move, slowly," he snapped angrily, pointing the gun more aggressively towards her as he motioned for her to go in the direction he wanted. That was when it hit her!"Is it you? What are you...wait, how did you know where I live?" she asked, trying to mask her fear."How the tables have turned. It wasn't difficult to find you at all. All I had to do was a little investigation. You said you would find me and kil
