The following night everyone was feeling more cheerful and merry than usual as we tucked into the array of fish we had caught from the river. We sat around the fire feasting with a sense of pride in how much we were progressing, and I found my restless nights weren’t occurring as often as they used to. Miles away from our old pack, we were starting to see a future ahead of us, one in which we were safe and no longer grieving from the tragedy that had kicked us all down. There still wasn’t a day that passed where we didn’t think of it, or ask ourselves why it had to happen, but at least now, we didn’t feel as though we were looking over our shoulders every minute of the day and night.

I didn’t tell anyone though, not even Lacey that I’d see that man’s yellow sinister eyes glaring right in front of me, whether I was awake or sleeping, they’d just appear right in front of me. I’d be busying myself with hunting, training, assisting with the house builds, gathering whatever we needed for the pack. But whenever I felt a sense of calm, there they would lurk in my view, as if I could reach out my hand and touch them. The first time it happened, I believed it was real and I instinctively reached out my claws to slash them, only to smash my hand into a tree. It felt like a warning from my wolf that the worst of things were really not over. I’d feel her restlessness whenever we’d journey back to the village, or at night if we’d hear a rustle or scuffling in the distance She’d immediately jump at the noise, startling me, making me feel on edge. I trusted her though, her instincts, and I had to admit, my own  were telling me it was only a matter of time until he’d come looking for us all. At first I thought I was just being cautious, paranoid even from the weight of responsibility to keep them all safe, but the more often it happened the more I knew, both me and my wolf wouldn’t feel secure until we saw him die right in front of our own eyes and burnt his body with the rest of his clan.

I naturally smiled as I watched them start to tap some old tins, bang their palms on the upturned logs and shaking pots of herbs, encouraging everyone to get up and dance to the beat. Men and women got up and pranced around the fire, when Lacey got up with a chuckle, grabbed my hand and pulled me along with her. Others clapped and whistled in tune as we swayed and twirled around one another, skipping along with everyone else.

See, how could I tell them anything…. How could I wipe away the little bit of joy they’ve managed to find by telling them my concerns? Instead, I laughed along, danced with the pack and chose to be cheerful with them tonight and deal with my worries tomorrow. I had our gruelling trip to the village and back again to mull over my thoughts… tonight, I wanted to be happy, and seeing Lacey’s smile, it was hard not to be.

After making our way back to the village, we did what we had become so routine in. Pick a house and together we start to pull it apart. Taking as much of the furniture and wood as we could each time. Today we picked the house myself, Emma and Max had used, and I helped two of the women gather more blankets, clothes and toiletries. We still had more than enough in our new home, stacked up to ration through, but we never stopped bringing more. I pulled down the curtains in my old room and stuffed them into one of the bags as I glanced out of the window to see the sun was already setting.

“WE DON’T HAVE MUCH TIME! GATHER WHAT WE HAVE, WE NEED TO LEAVE!” I shouted through the house, and my eyes darted to the woods that sent a shiver down my spine every time.

“WE’RE ON IT!” One of the guards, Jason shouted back.

I grabbed the bag, and made my way out of the house, hauling up a long plank of wood to add to our pile outside. I chucked it all down and as I looked at the sun growing dimmer, I gulped. As much as my grandfather wanted this place to be a refuge for his pack, it only ever gave me the creeps. I hurried myself along, running in and out of the house, gathering the wood and bringing it back out as the others repacked the tools. There was only four of us today, and I could feel the time ticking by with each second we were here. The night sky starting to set in and the sun fading behind the cornfields.

I threw down another plan of wood and decided that was enough for today. We could come back for the rest, next week, I didn’t want to spend another minute here!

I turned away from the pile, about to run back to the house, and call down the guards to leave everything and move their arses out here. All of a sudden, my skin bristled, and my wolf growled, I looked over my shoulder to see a tall man with a seedy smile glaring at me. I extracted my claws, prepared to swipe him and shout for help, when two hands wrapped around my mouth and my chest pulling me against a hard body, towering over me. I tried to slash his arm as the tall man came bounding toward me, I lifted my leg and slammed my foot into his gut. He staggered back, then looked at me and hissed. “You’re lucky I’m not allowed to kill you”. He snarled as he kicked with his heavy boot, slamming it onto my ankle, causing me to yelp against the man’s large, rough hand as it tightened to muffle the noise.

The tall man leaped toward me, pulled back his arm and smashed his clenched fist into my face, then again and again until I collapsed against his friend still holding onto me.

My eyes started to flutter open dazed and disorientated as I felt the sense of my body floating. Cracked stone and metal wire moving past me as I looked at what seemed to be a burrow of some sort. I tried to blink away the blur and I let out a croaky breath when I realised I recognised it to be the tunnels. The same one that I came through when we ran from Sun pack. I could feel then, the arms against my back and the chest against my face… I wasn’t floating, I was being carried.

“She’s starting to wake up”. The man carrying me grumbled.

“Good, then she’s just in time, we’re nearly there”. Another man in front replied.

I subtly extracted my claws, looked up at the man who’s attention was focused ahead, and I quickly rammed them into his chest. He yelled out in pain and dropped me to the floor as the other man turned around to see the commotion. He flashed over to me and wrapped his hands around my neck, and I slashed his face, whilst the other man fell against the wall clutching the wound on his chest.

“Ahh, you fucking bitch”. The tall man seethed as he let go of my neck. He swung his arm up to punch me like he did before, but I blocked him, just as Kent had taught me, then uppercut him in the chin, knocking him back.

“Don’t you put your fucking hands on me!”. I snapped back as I took another swipe at him and tore the skin on his arm as he tried to cover himself from my attack.

The other man tried to balance himself as he came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my own and my torso, trapping me in his hold. I flung my head back hard enough to smash against his mouth, his arms loosened from the sudden blow as he fell back on his feet. The tall man who was seething from the bloody marks I left on him came for me, I quickly gripped one of his arms that were stretched out in front of him, ready to grab me. I rammed my claws through it, seeing them poke out the other side covered in his blood as he yelled in pain. I pulled them back out then kicked him hard against his ribs, as he flung back onto the floor.

Just as I was about to make a run for it, a sudden forceful blow struck my head and I collided into the wall. My hair was pulled, yanking my head back as another blow hit my face, then I was thrown down face first to the floor. Big, strong hands were wrapping around my wrists, pulling my arms behind my back as I coughed out blood that splattered along the dirt floor.

“There’s not a fucking chance we’re going back without you! But this time, I’ll make sure you can’t try any of that shit again”. The man with a wounded chest spat as he started to bound my wrists with his leather belt, pulling it tightly until it dug into my skin, then wrapped his jacket around my arms and hands to cover my claws. He hauled me to my feet, chucked me over his shoulder. “Get the fuck up”. He demanded to the other man who was groaning from the holes in his arm. “The sooner we get her back, the sooner she’s no longer our fucking problem”.

The man’s hands suddenly grabbed my waist and yanked me off of his shoulder, causing me to fall to the floor. He wrapped his hand around the back of my neck, as his friend just ahead opened the secret doorway… Shit! My heart thumped. I’m back! “Get to your feet now!” The man glowered as he tightened his grip.I gingerly got to my feet as he pushed me forward into the main hall, and I gulped at the foreboding feeling lurching in my stomach. My eyes darted toward the entrance doors at the spot where my mother had been ruthlessly killed. I inhaled a deep breath, pushing away the tears that were springing to my eyes. This room had always felt so bright and elegant, a place to socialise, dance, gather for plays and candlelit dinners my parents always arranged. We’d held so many ceremony’s here for fated and chosen mates, or mixers as a chance for all the singles to get better acquainted. But now, it looked so gloomy and dark, it had lost it’s joy and cheerful memories. They led me through

“Get in there!” The man ordered as he pushed me into one of the cells. I scraped my knee against the rough gritty stone as I stumbled in. “The day your alpha decides to kill you, I’ll be first in line to see it”. He sneered, clearly he was still pissed I had shattered two of his teeth in the tunnel.“He’s not my alpha!” I retorted, imagining all the ways I’d love to kill them right now.“Well, you’re down here, and he’s up there, so, I think you’ll find he is and will always be your alpha”. “And the day I decide to kill you, I’ll make sure it’s slow and excruciating” I seethed as he locked the door, standing on the other side of the bars.“And how are you going to do that, now you’re stuck in here with the rest of the pieces of shit?”. He grinned. “Play nice with your new friends!” He added before walking away, swinging all the prison keys on its chain. As soon as he mentioned the word ‘friends’, I turned around to see I wasn’t in the cell alone, but only one of them I recognised.“B

My first night in the cell was a real awakening to the horror they had all been living through. There were points in the night that you could hear the desperate wails and sobs of women held in the other cells in the building, or the sounds of someone being dragged out by a guard, then thrown back in. Everyone would tense the moment the main door opened, and you’d hear the sounds of footsteps coming for any one of us. I had no idea what they were being dragged out for in the middle of the night, and I chose not to ask any of my new cell mates, as they kept as still and quiet as they could, hoping not to be picked. Our morning breakfast consisted of stale bread, and a cup of tepid water to share between all five of us. The four of them practically flung themselves across the floor the moment it was placed through the bars. They shoved their share of the bread into their mouths, and each took a sip of water like it was a rare delicacy, passing around the cup, then anxiously waiting for i

“What did they want?” Molly asked in a hushed tone as she crawled over to me the moment a guard had pushed me back into my prison.“I was taken to a room….”“Was it all made of metal?” Tyla quizzed, looking like she already knew the answer.“Yes”. I nodded in response. “Even the chair was rock hard steel”. “Well, that would be known as the torture room. The last place you want to be taken to”. “What do they do to you in there?” I pressed, as I looked around at them all. But apart from Tyla, they all remained quiet and sheepish.“Well, what happened to you? Though from what I can see, it doesn’t look like you have a scratch on you”. She observed with a suspicious squint in her eyes, like I had something to hide.“Marco came in. He didn’t hurt me, but he made it tremendously clear what he did want to do to me”. “What do you mean by that?” She shrugged, still holding her wary expression.“He was practically on top of me, breathing all over my face and told me that he’s going to consid

“Wow, who else is still starving?”. Tyra groaned as we finished nibbling at our bread. “I think we could all devour a feast right now”. Molly sighed as she licked her fingers. “If we do ever get out of here, the first thing we do is eat, and we don’t stop until our bellies are full”. Toby said dreamily. “Oi, you, get to your feet!”. A guard ordered as he pointed at Toby. He huffed as he stood up and the man unlocked the door, clasping the cuffs around Toby’s wrists as another guard supervised to make sure the rest of us didn’t attack. He was taken out of the cell and the door locked before they started pulling him away. He glanced back at us, and we all gave him an encouraging smile. He flashed us a wink to let us know that he’d start to put our plan in motion. With only us women left in the confinement, I took the opportunity to shamefully relieve myself in the waste hole that had been dug in the ground for us to use, with only a wooden flap to cover it back up. The girls were p

“So, what should we do now?” Toby asked as we glumly sat around the cell. It had been two days since any of us had been picked to work outside or in the palace, and the enthusiasm we had was starting to diminish.Toby had returned from his last chore telling us that he’d only been taken to the other end of our building to muck out the waste holes that were starting to block. He had the most furious look on his face when he came back. The only thing he could tell us was that there weren’t many guards inside the building, and they only seemed to enter when they were choosing their next workers.“What if one of you makes enough racket for them to come into the cell?” I said aloud as the risky plan came into my mind. “And I attack… there would be no more than two, as long as I’m quick enough, I think I can handle it”. “You’re going to take on two guards, and then

We woke up to another dreary day stuck in the prison, with only the tiniest crack in the wall to let us know whether it was day or night. We could tell the sun must be high In the sky today as we constantly wiped away the beads of sweat from our faces as we sat in the humidity of the building. One by one the guards came in and out, taking one or more prisoners each time, and to our confusion, Tyra, Toby and Zola had all been picked. “Something must be going on today, for them to take so many of us”. I said to Molly as we both took turns to breathe in what little air we could from the crack in the wall. “It’s never usually this empty down here”. She replied, as we could hear hardly any chatter or shuffling in the cells around us. “Hmm, perhaps he wants them to start building his ghastly statue!” “Perhaps..” Molly replied despondently as she sat back in her usual spot. “They’re going to be knackered workin

Since the news about the wall yesterday, we had all been rather quiet, lost in our own thoughts and doubts. When I was taken to the kitchen today to clean, I caught a glimpse of all the bricks and tools, and the captives that were starting the first layer, being watched closely by Marco’s men. I was seething inside at the wave of barriers between us and our freedom…. Prison bars, guards, the open field, the men patrolling those grounds and now that damn wall! Time would be ticking each day that wall got bigger and higher, not that I could really see us making it all the way there alive, with just me fighting our way through with the only few lessons of training I had, and although the Sun pack’s guards were skilled, I needed to be better! I needed to be able to floor them without breaking a sweat to then go against an alpha! But not once did I manage to take any of our guards down during our lessons. We solemnly ate our dinner, sitting on the floor in a circle, huddled over the small

They ran through the trees and Conan giggled and squealed every time Roman pretended to catch him. I’ve seen Roman smile or laugh a million times, but I never knew he could smile with his whole soul and being until he first held Conan.Every day we’re either with the earth wolves in their territory or with the sun wolves, and to Conan, both lands are his home. They’re all so protective of him and I had noticed that my guards as well as Roman’s had become even more vigi

“Thank you for coming”. I smiled with a respectful bow as more shadow wolves walked into the ball room.Me and Roman stood at the entrance witnessing all four clans coming together for a celebration I had decided to arrange. The ball room and entrance hall was already filled with all the different pack members dressed in their gowns and suits as bubbling champagne and delicately decorated food was being passed around on silver trays. I didn’t let go of Roman’s hand as a giddiness kept weaving through my stomach and wanting to burst with excitement. What was even more breath-taking was that as soon as people walked inside, they began mingling with one another straight away. There was no wariness, no one looking uncomfortable or uneasy, it was just as sight to see, a sight I was unbelievably proud of.The idea to do this came to me a month after Henrick had spoken to each of the other three clans face to face and once we had returned to s

“I see he’s here again”. I sighed to Richard and Roman as we stepped out of the palace together.I’d been back for a week since mine and Roman’s getaway and every morning I came outside, I’d always see Henrick sitting under the trees just outside our border. All day every day he’d be there, just sitting and waiting. Any time I walked across my land, or in and out of the palace, at the corner of my eye, or in the back of my mind, I knew he was there. It didn’t concern or scare me, and I definitely didn’t see him as a threat, as far as I was concerned, being my father or not, if he stepped a foot against me, I’d kill him!“Yep! Still here”. Richard responded as he shook his head with exasperation. “Unfortunately, unless he’s on our land, we can’t do anything about it. The forest is free reign to anyone who lives there”. “I know, and I don’t think he’s planning on leaving any time soon”. I said in agreement.“Have you given any more thought about what you want to do?” Roman asked as he

I knew that now I’d had a taste of what sex with a bonded mate felt like, I was now addicted to his smell, his touch and the ecstasy he gave me every time he was inside me.He smiled joyfully as he took my hand, and we headed outside and walked toward the river. We sat on the grass and dangled our legs in the water as I nestled into his side with his arm wrapped around me. The autumn sun peaked through the clouds glistening along the water as we looked out onto the horizon, savouring the peace and quiet we had alone together. He lowered himself into the water then turned to face me as he ran his hands up my thighs until they held my waist. Emma smiled at me as she pinned a green and yellow flower she had made herself into my hair as my curls cascaded down my back. She had set up an awning with the help of other sun and earth she-wolves for me to get ready in for my ceremony. She’d even had a long mirror placed inside so I could see how I looked in my white lace dress with a heart shaped neckline and hugging my waist, all the way down to my feet. I looked at my reflection and I was instantly reminded of when I was last standing in another bridal dress with a different man waiting to become my mate. I let out a quiet exhale as I remembered how I had felt that day, how scared, alone and lost I was, feeling as though I had no control over my own fate. But now…. Here I was! It was only then that I really let myself think of how drastically things had changed and how everything led me to this moment. N

But my gaze momentarily glanced just behind his shoulder and my smile vanished when I noticed my father standing by the treeline.
