LOGINChapter 12
Francis
“FUCK”, I shouted
Of course, the stupid little girl would get herself into more trouble. Trouble was Charlie’s middle fucking name after pain in the ass, which she had been since I took this post. I was a fucking enforcer, for god’s sake, not a freaking babysitter. I should be at the Alpha's side protecting him, not his mate.
Another growl left my lips as I struggled in my haste to throw on the t-shirt, shorts, and jeans I discarded on the floor the night before. Sleeping naked was easier after a run, not that I could go far, considering I had to have an eye on the pain in the ass down the corridor at all times.
Aggravated, I left my room sands footwear to get to my charge, all the while pondering what the hell I had been thinking to take this post. I must admit when the Alpha first approach me with his asinine plan for the new gig, it sounded easy enough.
“Take the job Francis,” he said. “How much trouble could one seventeen-year-old girl cause, particularly one with chunks of memory missing.”
How stupid the Alpha was, not that he would dare say that to his face. That little spitfire was a fucking handful. When Charlie’s memories finally returned, I wanted to be nowhere near when she got her hands on Naja. The poor bastard. He would be in a world of trouble. The little hellion would most likely bring my big strong Alpha to his knees in a heartbeat. Hell, she already wore his balls around her little neck, even if she wasn’t aware of it.
I rushed out my door, practically jogging to Charlies’s room that was four doors away from my own. Stupidly thinking she would be fine and I had the advantage of being a natural-born wolf in my prime. Charlie was human although I questioned how the doses in the drugs given to her wore off so quickly, kind of humanly impossible until I started mixing stronger drugs together just for her, those drug-induced days was like a respite from the constant worrying what the idiot would do next, I even found myself at a bar near to the institution, drank, fucked and then fucked again. It was like heaven until I was dragged back to hell.
A blood-curling scream pierce the air, and I was two seconds from ramming the door down before rational thoughts stopped me. I quickly peered around, suspicion narrowing my eyes as I scan the area. I really didn’t want any of the patients to witness something they shouldn’t. Then a whimper hit my ear, and I thought fuck it, I really didn’t want to end up on the bad side of Naja. Not after I witness him tearing Micah limb from limb, and Micah had been his family, just the thought of that ran shivers up my spine. Nope, definitely not taking the chance. Naja was one crazy S.O.B. I really didn’t want to know what his fucked up mind could imagine for my punishment. Fuck that.
I kick the door in with my bare feet. The loud smash of wood told me I had to act fast. Someone would appear soon, this time of night the place was usually quiet, and already the noise I made with the broken door and the screaming would alert someone, the security I could handle the patients was another matter, this place was a bucket full of crazy on a good heavily medicated day, at night the shit got real.
There was no time to spare. Crossing the threshold, I stopped again. Years of instinct and battle readiness told me something was off. There was no movement, and no one seemed to be in the room. A few seconds ago, there were loud screams and someone whimpering in pain. Possibly Charlie. Now, a penny could drop. The stillness was utterly disconcerting. It took my eyes a minute to adjust to the darkened room because of the heightened adrenaline pumping through my veins. That’s when the scene clicks into place. Slacked-jawed, I stopped dead in my tracks.
“Holy fucking hell,” I whispered, panic and the thought of my Alpha tearing my throat out hastened my steps as I walked into the room towards the bed, which seemed to be my sole focus, taking in the gruesome scene. What the eff was I seeing right now. For a second I contemplated whether to turn the lights on, but thought better of it, and thank fuck, I had the foresight to leave the lights off.
The room looked like an episode from CSI. Anyone walking into this room would think its sole color was red and not the stark white room of a mental institution. Chunks of flesh and clothes were all that was left of the poor bastard. But I could still smell Legolas even if parts of him were unrecognizable.
The bed was in a disarray; the sheets were half off and half on, dragging on the blood-soaked floor. Legolas had attacked Charlie. I stupe, at eye level taking in the splattered blood laying the walls like Christmas wrapping paper, and that’s when I saw the gooey substance in a puddle in the center of the mattress I had missed it cause the blood had covered the entire surface of the bed except for the middle where a small indent still laid. Legolas had been over Charlie, maybe forcing her into the bed, then her wolf had taken over, shifted, then tore Legolas to pieces, hoping to protect her. Mrs. Edwards, the crazy bat, had been right all along. Someone had been in Riley’s room the night before, and he had gotten away with it until he tried to rape the wrong girl. There was kama being her usual bitch self.
Charlie had accomplished the unimaginable she had gone from a human to a shifter after being bitten, the first-ever bitten wolf. Goddess, Naja was so fucked. If the elders ever found out, Charlie would be dead. Standing up and made my way to the opened window and saw two silhouettes running in the distance, one wolf and another small figure with blonde hair, I knew I had to give chaste eventually but I allowed them to go, allowed them the illusion of safety for the time being. I had to report to Naja, and that was a conversation I would give my left nut to avoid. I walked out of the room, closing the door gently behind me. I headed back to my room and to call my Alpha, who was likely to chop my said balls off in retribution for losing his shifted mate.
Chapter 30I found him in the office. The same one where we’d lost control. Where the bond between us had gone from a slow burn to wildfire. It looked the same—cold, controlled, all dark wood and leather, like a throne room disguised as a war map. But the air was different now. Tighter. It hummed with unsaid things. He stood with his back to me, hunched slightly over the table. Red markers lined the northern border like pinpricks in old scars.“I’m not furniture, Naja,” I said. “You don’t get to keep me in the background and expect me not to notice.”He didn’t turn.“You’ve doubled the patrols. You’re holding meetings behind closed doors. Everyone’s walking around like a storm’s already here—except nobody’s saying a word to me.”A pause. A muscle ticked in his jaw before he finally spoke.“You’ve been training.”“Don’t change the subject.”“I’m not.”“Really? Because from where I’m standing, I’m still on the outside looking in. And I’m tired of it.”He turned now—slowly. The gold in h
Chapter 29CharlieI didn’t sleep. Not really. The walls in this place might’ve been quieter than Bellmoore, but that didn’t mean they didn’t hum. The air was too still—the silence, too loud. I stared at the ceiling, breathing through the ache in my chest, replaying every word Naja said. My parents were dead. My brothers had been abandoned. I’d been thrown into a psych ward while everyone else moved on like I didn’t exist. And now? I was here. Changed. Bitten. Claimed. Tangled up in a war I never signed up for. I wasn’t angry anymore. I was scorched through. By the time morning cracked across the trees, I’d made my decision—I was done waiting. Done following half-truths and protective silences. If this place wanted to keep me, it needed to start giving me more than secrets and shadows. I pulled on my boots, laced them tighter than necessary, and headed out. The compound was quiet. Too quiet. No early training. No chatter. Even the sentries were whispering. Something felt
Chapter 28Andrew “They’ve been gone two days.” Andrew’s voice was low, even. Measured in that way that made the others nervous. The pack stood in a wide circle around him, shoulders tense, expressions drawn. The kind of silence that followed bad news—and waited for worse. “Roman and Joshua don’t just disappear,” he continued. “They knew protocol. They checked in. They were trained.” No one spoke. He let the words hang in the air like fog. “If they’re dead, I want proof. If they’re being held, I want blood.” That’s when a patrolman came sprinting in from the tree line, breath ragged. “Alpha!” he shouted. “We found them.” Andrew didn’t wait for details. He didn’t ask how bad. He just moved. He passed the edge of the encampment without another word, heading straight for the northern border of their territory. The patrolman led him until the trees thinned and the air shifted—wetter here, colder, the kind of quiet that felt unnatural. Then came the stench. It hit before the
Chapter 27CharlieI hadn’t come to this compound for a mate. I hadn’t come for a war, either. I came for answers. And somewhere along the way—between surviving Joggernut and being knotted into next week—I got distracted. Now, my head was clearer. Pissed, but clear. This place had buried me in heat, in blood, in politics. But I remembered now. I had two brothers out there—somewhere—living lives they didn’t choose. And I was going to find them. I cornered Naja in the hallway before he could disappear again. He’d just come back from the council meeting, still reeking of elder musk and stone-walled power plays—but I didn’t care. “What happened to my family?” I asked, voice flat. He stopped mid-step. “My family, Naja,” I repeated. “That night. Five years ago. After the attack—what happened to them? Where are they?” He turned slowly, jaw tight. “Charlie—” “No more avoiding it,” I snapped. He leaned against the wall, arms folding across his chest. “Your parents were killed that n
Chapter 26CharlieThe gym was quiet, the faint hum of fluorescent lights echoing against the walls. I stepped inside, the scent of rubber mats and sweat faint but familiar. Riley sat in the far corner, her knees tucked to her chest, arms wrapped tightly around them. She stared straight ahead, her expression distant, her usual spark nowhere to be found.“Riley?” I called softly, approaching her cautiously. She didn’t look at me, but her shoulders tensed slightly like she was bracing for something.I lowered myself onto the mat beside her, leaning back on my hands. “Hey. What’s going on?”For a moment, she said nothing. Her eyes remained fixed on a spot on the floor, and I wondered if she would even acknowledge me. Then she let out a long, shaky sigh.“I tried,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “I tried to help him.”I frowned. “Who? Naja?”She shook her head. “No. Sam.”I blinked in surprise. “What happened?”Her hands tightened around her knees, knuckles turning wh
Chapter 25CharlieI rolled over, and my hand felt space. I knew in an instant that I was alone. Wakefulness soon took hold of me, and my eyes flew open. I sat up in a massive bed, confused, and my body aching as fuck. The last thing I remembered was Naja retaking me; how many times had I blacked out from the pleasure? My body told me too many to count. My gaze swept the room, and the sheets fell around my naked body as my eyes took in the multiple bite marks and bruises on my hips and breasts, including the one on my right shoulder. My core heated at the memory of Naja thrusting deep inside of me as he bit down on my shoulders, sending me over the edge.If I didn’t know better, I would think a dog had attacked me. Which made me laugh. I was such a moron. My head hit the pillow as peals of laughter erupted from me. I slipped off the bed and gathered the sheets around my body, taking them with me as I snooped around. My stomach growled in hunger, and I figured it prudent to take a quic
