Joshua and I gawked at each other while he still hesitated to answer my question. The kids clung to him tightly.
“Answer me,” I demanded, my eyes weakened with frustration. If Joshua was already married with two kids, why did he marry me? What was going on? My heart pounded so quickly. Had I been deceived yet again by a man, just like in the past? I desperately hoped not. Before Joshua could respond, another voice cut in. “Jay, you're back!” A beautiful woman, who seemed to be in her mid-sixties, descended the glassy stairs. She bore a striking resemblance to Joshua. She wore a gorgeous black gown, and her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders. She stopped in front of us with a striking height. “Mom,” Joshua said softly, slanting his head to kiss her on both cheeks. She smiled at Joshua, then turned to me with a sick glare as if we had been enemies from birth. Her eyes made me feel like garbage. She had the same cold stare that Joshua had. “Good day, ma’am,” I greeted, the awkwardness between us overwhelming. I guessed that was me opening the door to doom. Joshua’s mom frowned, wrinkled her nose, and took a step backward. “Gosh, so much smell,” she whizzed. That was the worst embarrassment I had ever experienced. I didn't know whether to feel humiliated or angry. In the end, I felt both. “Who is she, Jay? Don’t tell me she's the new cook you hired because she’s not getting the job. Her mouth smells like rotten beans, and she looks too dirty and unkempt. I'm sure we would die of food poisoning because of her poor hygiene,” Joshua’s mom lashed out at me, as if my mere presence was offensive and with prejudice. Her words stung. I knew prison had made me feel like a piece of shit, but her words were especially hurtful. I was still human. No one had ever insulted me in this manner. Even before leaving the prison, I had bathed thoroughly and scrubbed my skin to get the stench of prison off my body. Joshua looked at me, then back at his mom. “No, she’s not the cook,” he said firmly. His mom looked at him, confused. “Then who is she, and what is she doing in my house? Why bring a beggar to my house?” she spat, another insult. Oh goodness, this time I was triggered. I clenched my fists tightly to hold myself back. Joshua's eyes met mine before turning back to his mom. “She’s my wife,” he declared, his voice steady and audacious. I saw his mother’s spirit seem to leave her body. Her face turned frigid and pale. She took another glance at me from head to toe, making me feel extremely uncomfortable. Then she suddenly broke into a classy laugh. “That’s an expensive joke, Jay. Your dark humor always gets me.” She laughed so hard. I couldn’t believe I was ridiculed to the point of becoming a laughingstock. Once the biggest name in the city, now I was the butt of the joke. It was a staggering transformation. “I’m not joking, Mom,” Joshua insisted, his confidence unwavering as he looked his mother in the eye. “She is my wife. We just got married in church and in court.” His mother’s face was so dazed and pale, as though she had just seen a ghost. My heart raced as she looked at Joshua, dumbfounded. I wondered what was going through her mind. “You’re lying. No, I know you wouldn’t do something this stupid!” She shook her head disapprovingly. Joshua stared at his mom before bending a little towards the kids hovering around him. “Y’all go to your rooms with your mom. I’ll be with you soon,” he whispered, pecking them on their foreheads. They rushed off to their mom, the woman who had been standing quietly, also in shock. The children went upstairs, and Joshua watched them before turning back to his mom. “You’re joking, right, Jay? Tell me this is a joke. I’m not even in the mood for this right now, so cut the act already. There’s no way you married this... pig. Why am I even overthinking it?” She laughed it off again. Joshua pulled out the marriage certificate and presented it to his mother. Her face went pale as she took the papers and skimmed through them. “I’m not joking, Mom. Claire is my legally wedded wife,” Joshua reiterated while his mother still went through the wedding agreement. It was as though she had seen a ghost. She lifted her eyes and looked at Joshua with fury, her eyes blazing like a fierce lioness. “What have you done, Jay? You married this... thing? Why? What is wrong with you? What is this?” she growled, her voice like a thunderstorm. Fear gripped me as I watched her transform from a human to a beast. Her eyes shone with rage. While I stood there in fear, Joshua remained unbothered, unshaken, confident, stoic. What kind of man was he? I asked myself. “I love her,” Joshua said softly. I was as shocked as his mother. I looked at him, but he kept his eyes on his mother, as if he hadn’t just done something extraordinary. Who even gets married without telling his mother? “You love what? Her? This old hag with a smelling mouth? Is this some kind of joke? Huh? You, out of the blue, without informing anyone, go out randomly and bring this old, unkempt beggar and say you’re married to her and love her? Make it make sense!” His mother's voice reverberated with anger. That was the most insults I had ever received in one sentence. I wished the ground would open and swallow me whole. The insults were overwhelming. “She is my wife, and I love her, Mom. I don’t appreciate you calling my wife such names,” Joshua said, reaching for my left hand and locking it tightly with his. “What stupid wife? What stupid love?” Joshua's mom screamed, her voice echoing through the room. She turned to me angrily. “You vile, pig-looking, old haggard bitch! What have you done to my son? What did you do to him?” She grabbed my right arm, her nails digging into my skin, causing real pain. I contorted my face in both pain and confusion, unsure of how to react. “Mom!” Joshua growled. “Stop hurting her. She has done nothing but show me what true love is. Let go of her!” He pulled his mother’s hand away from my arm. “What stupid love? This is no marriage! You do not have my blessing! This is just a sham,” she shouted, tearing the marriage papers into tiny pieces. “This is no marriage!” She flared and threw the shredded paper in my face. Joshua watched his mother coldly. “Whether you accept it or not, whether you believe it or not, Mom, Claire and I are legally wedded, and I love her. You will learn to come to terms with it. For now, my wife and I need to freshen up after a long and stressful wedding rite. I will talk to you later, Mom.” Joshua remained confident and bold. He kissed his mom on the forehead after speaking. His hand held mine firmly as we walked past his mother, heading for the stairs. “Jay! That old hag should not enter my house!” she screamed, our backs turned to her. Neither Joshua nor I responded, but I felt so much shame and ridicule. “Speaking to my wife more nicely will make you look more beautiful, Mom. Please do,” Joshua smirked, leading me upstairs to his room. His room was a den of dark aesthetics, a beautiful work of art. I was awestruck at the entrance while he walked deeper into the room. I stood there as he immediately began to take off his suit and then his white shirt, exposing his heavily built body. “I know I’m a beautiful work of art, but I suggest you get yourself seated, just like in a cinema, so you can enjoy a better view, my wife,” he said, still with his back to me. Embarrassment flushed through me, and I sat on a large couch in the room. He was surely bold and quite arrogant. I averted my eyes from his body, feeling both irritated and intrigued. He went to the shower, and while he was there, I enjoyed the beautiful ambiance of his room. A few minutes later, Joshua emerged from the bathroom with damp hair, wearing shorts and still bare-chested. He got into bed, checked his phone for a while, and then picked up a book from his bedside. Despite having multiple questions, my tongue failed me. I didn't know if it was fear, but I just couldn’t bring myself to utter a word. “You could still come continue your movie after taking a shower,” he said, his deadly green eyes flashing at me. I instantly felt uncomfortable and jerked up from the couch. I just wanted to be out of his presence. Had he cast a spell on me? My tongue felt useless. I rushed to the bathroom and showered. “I didn’t find anything to change into, so I wore this shirt and shorts. Hope it’s fine by you?” I said as soon as I came out of the bathroom, still feeling uncomfortable. Joshua was still engrossed in his book. “Whatever belongs to me belongs to my wife,” he said casually. Just then, the door flew open, and a woman stood at the entrance. She wasn’t Joshua’s mom. She gave me a deadly look, walked up to me, and grabbed me by the neck. “So, you are the witch?!” she growled.“Let go, Emma,” Joshua’s voice vibrated in the room while the angry-looking woman grabbed my hand and was pulling me out of the room.Emma flamed a stare at Joshua’s hand, which was holding hers firmly. “You are holding me? What is wrong with you, Jay?” Emma wagged her head with a wrinkled forehead.I was in the middle of all this and I was far from terrified. “She is my wife, let go of her,” Joshua said slowly and confidently.“Your wife?” Emma dimmed her eyes and looked all astonished.I looked at him because the sound of him saying that was ecstatic. As much as I knew it was just an act, it still freaked me out. Emma, on the other hand, didn’t say anything further. She stared at Joshua intently and then looked at me with a hiss before she freed her grip on my hand and yanked her hand out of Joshua’s grip.I softly rubbed my hand, which was red then. “What is going on here, Joshua? You got married to… this old, tattered-looking thing? Some kind of joke, isn’t it?” Emma looked at me
The nights refused me rest; I kept staring into the darkness as whispers of my guilt kept me awake. The next morning, Joshua got out of bed while I remained, my eyes enjoying the little rays of sunlight that managed to penetrate the room through the open edges of the curtains.I couldn’t sleep on the bed with Joshua, so I slept on the couch. He looked at me, surprised, as he realized I had slept on the couch and not on the bed.“Hey,” his deep early morning voice sounded even more heavenly than usual. He groaned and rubbed his hand through his scattered hair. “Why did you sleep on the couch?” His sleepy eyes darted at me intently. What could I tell him? I didn’t even sleep. I felt so much guilt that I wondered if Marcus had felt this same guilt when he sent me to prison for a crime I did not commit. Had he sold out his conscience? My heart was so heavy.“We didn’t finish our conversation last night,” I started and sat upright on the couch, my hands folded and rested on my chest.Joshu
“I don’t have a dress to wear,” I whispered from the bathroom after drying myself off. “I can’t wear the shorts and shirt I wore yesterday for breakfast and our supposed outing,” I added, my voice tinged with frustration. There was silence after I spoke. “Can you hear me? Are you there?” I asked, my eyes narrowing with worry. While still in the bathroom, wondering if Joshua had heard me, the bathroom door slightly pushed open. “Who is it?” I jerked back in fear, taking steps backward as I stood stark naked. There was silence after the door creaked open. Was it Emma or Joshua’s mother coming to get me? Multiple questions thundered in my heart as my eyes darted toward the door.“Who is it?” I asked again, my voice trembling. All of a sudden, a hand popped into the bathroom, holding clothes. “Take this,” Joshua’s baritone voice accompanied his hand, which dangled in the bathroom holding a dress.I picked up the dress. “Thank you,” I whispered reluctantly, staring at it before quickly put
The air in the room became even more tense and toxic. Joshua and his mom locked eyes in a silent battle. From the little I had studied of Joshua so far, I knew he was going to insist on having me at the table. I could guess his next move.“I don’t think I’m hungry anymore, Jay. I’ll just go upstairs,” I coughed and forced a smile that wasn’t even consistent. I don’t know why I smiled, but I just did. Probably the situation was too awkward for me.I yanked myself out of Joshua’s grasp and hurriedly turned to leave, but he held me back by my right wrist. My legs froze. What I feared was about to happen. I closed my eyes firmly and just hoped he wasn’t going to force me to have breakfast with him.“You don’t have to go upstairs,” Joshua began. My heart pounded hard against my rib cage with my eyes firmly closed as I waited for his next words. “I’m not hungry either. Let’s just go for our outing,” he completed.I opened my eyes, relieved he didn’t force me to stay for breakfast and indire
“No!” I shouted in the car, catching Joshua’s attention.“What is it?” He immediately pulled up the car, his forehead wrinkling and his eyes narrowing. My heart started pounding, and I swallowed large gulps of saliva.“What is it?” Joshua asked again, his voice louder.I didn’t know how to tell him, but the words burst out. “I do not want to attend any press conference,” I blabbed, jiggling my head frantically.“Why?” Joshua’s eyes dimmed with a stern frown. How was I going to tell him the reason? How could I explain that I didn’t want to attend the press conference with him because Marcus was surely going to see me? I was certain he would watch the press conference. In fact, he watched anything that related to Joshua. I couldn’t take that risk, at least not yet.“Could you answer me and stop staring at me as though you just saw a ghost?” Joshua’s baritone voice echoed in my ears, holding a whiff of growing anger.I opened my lips tensely, blundering to control my ragged breathing.“I
“She’s my wife!” Joshua’s statement brought silence to the room as he looked at me, smiling confidently.I couldn't break eye contact with him. If there was anything I expected after covering my face, it wasn't him smiling at me. I was prepared for his fury, but instead, I got a smile.“Your wife?” one of the journalists asked. Joshua turned to him, and his smile faded into a stern gaze. “I said, she’s my wife,” he repeated firmly.Whenever he called me his wife with that deep, resonant voice, it sent a shiver down my spine. The boldness in his tone gave me a different feeling, making my ears tingle.Immediately, murmuring erupted in the crowd. They were clearly caught off guard. If my face had been uncovered, everyone, including Marcus, would have seen me. This news was surely going to make headlines.“Mr. Hensaw,” another journalist with blonde hair raised his hand.Joshua flashed his eyes at him and nodded. “Why does she have her face covered? Let’s see the beautiful face of your w
“You are Jay's wife, right?” Joshua’s grandma asked, her eyes darting toward me.I didn’t know what response to give her; I was stunned. She looked me dead in the eye, and it made my legs feel extremely vulnerable.“Yes, yes I am,” I stuttered and gulped down a huge wad of saliva. His grandma released a small smile. Did she like me? I asked myself, as the smile seemed welcoming.“Why did you accept to marry him?” Joshua’s grandma pushed forward another question. At that point, I was already sweating. I glanced at Joshua, but he wasn’t looking at me. He seemed more composed than I had ever seen him.“I’m waiting,” Joshua’s grandma chipped in and snapped me out of my oblivion.“I married him because I love him,” I lied, trying to maintain composure. I didn’t want them to know I was lying. For a brief moment, his grandma and I locked eyes, and then she looked at Joshua and nodded her head. I was right; she liked me. Apart from her, Mrs. Henshaw was there as well, along with Emma and Josh
“My grandmother is inscrutable by nature,” Joshua said as his eyes darted towards me.I wrinkled my forehead in confusion. “What do you mean?” I asked, shrugging softly.Joshua stood up and walked over to me. “What I mean is, you have to prove to my grandmother that you are meant for me. Otherwise, we…” Joshua spoke and trailed off, his demeanor a bit shaken. This was one of the rare moments I saw Joshua with such a vulnerable expression. “Or else what?” My heart raced as I asked.“Or else I think we are going to have a hard time keeping our marriage contract,” his baritone voice finally came back together.I narrowed my eyes. “Why?” I asked.Joshua stared at me intently for a while before he moved backwards and relaxed on the couch, the same couch I had slept on yesterday. “If my grandmother doesn’t approve of you, then we cannot make this work. I can’t even consider staying married if she doesn’t approve of it,” Joshua explained while seated, his eyes lowered. My ears tingled at the
Authors POV Mia was in her room the next morning. She was pondering on her encounter with her supposed arch enemy, John. She sat on the bed, feeling much better than she felt the other night. The flashback of how John came so close to her yesterday stuck to her brain. It was a feeling that she couldn’t explain, just like genuine love, but she didn’t think it was love, probably immense disgust. Her hands wrapped around her chest, she sat on the bed silently and also strayed her thoughts to the new bride, or rather old wife as she claimed. The colossal part of Mia felt she overreacted about the whole situation. Why was she even angry? Was she married to Him or was he entitled to telling her about his past life? Irrespective of this incongruent thought of hers, she still felt bad, or rather angry.“Good day, ma’am”. A voice popped from outside which was accompanied with a knock on the door. It was the new cook “Yes, please come in” The cook came in with a tray in his hand. It had the
My heart raced so fast when Lucifer walked into the room. Thankfully, before he walked in, I collected Rogers hoodie and wore. I was sure he saw him when he came in and that’s why he came to my room. Lucifer never visited me so late at night, so the red flag was very glaring.I managed to convince him and he left the room not so suspicious. Thanks to God that my ears are very sharp and I heard the creaking floor boards as he approached. I guess God was on my side too.“That was a close one” I sighed with my hand pressing my chest after he left. Rogers who hid behind the curtains also came out.“You need to leave now!!” I snapped at him as he tried grabbing my arm romantically.“ and why should I?” He held my cheeks and tried kissing me but I tossed him aside.“Don’t do that again… please” he dragged and looked at me sternly. I looked back at him and held my breathe. A little bit of fear gripped me as I remembered what I had seen in his house. The drugs I saw made me a little terrified
" hi, Mister," A young chap greeted me with the Spanish accent. He was a bright looking boy. He had a confused smile on his face. With his blonde short hair." Good day Chap, you must be Jose ain't it?"I queried and squatted down to his level. He stared at me befuddled, but then I was smiling at him. He had a clear face and did have semblance with his father."Yes I'm Jose, how do you know my name, Mister?" He questioned with a childish voice. His left eye was slightly closed. I was about to answer, when there was a thunder clap.I looked upwards and the clouds where forming and sure a heavy rain was about wetting the soil."nada de qué preocuparse, chico (Nothing to worry about boy)" I said in Spanish. I scoffed and placed my hand on his face. " Jose, con quién estás hablando? (Jose who are you talking to?)" A feminine voice resounded from behind. " Who are you?"A lady questions with weak English and Spanish accent. The lady drags Jose away from my clasp. I huffed and stared at my
" Why did you summon us all? Brad snapped at me. It was the next day after I came back from Carl's house and I summoned everyone to the living room for a pack meeting. Carl was also invited but he hadn't arrived then."Just wait for Carl, there is something important I have to discuss and share with everyone." I said while Brad folded his hand gloating at me.The whole pack members were gathered and itching to hear what I had in store. Usually, I always did the listening but this time, doing the speaking did come with some ecstatic feeling."I don't have the whole fucking day Alina, you either speak now or I will waltz out of here."Brad bawled pointing his hand at me. My hands were now folded."Calm down Brad, she has never asked for permission to speak so give her this one chance"Lady Macbeth said. She seized a moment with my glare. We gaped at each other and she nodded first with a smile and blinked her eyes for about half a minute."Okay then" Brad said and sat back on his seat.
"I Armnado Luca, this day reject you, Elsa Roland as my mate" These were the words of Armando, my mate or rather my Ex mate now. It was my twentieth birthday and everything was going smoothly before this happened. Ironically, the party was hosted and organized by Armando unknown to me that he had a hidden agendum. Tears filled my eyes on hearing this and I stared deeply into his eyes and I saw no remorsefulness in him but rather he looked all serious." Armando, what is this, you are joking with me right? '' I playfully said and touched his arms as he was used to playing silly pranks on me and so i thought it was one of them. But unfortunately, my thought was not it and so it just remained my thought alone and not his."I am very serious Elsa. This is not a joke" He sternly uttered to me. My eyes became watery and my breathe ceased for some seconds. How was it even possible that Armando who had only shown me love would do this to me publicly. He was actually holding a microphone when
“So what is the situation back there?” Asher bashes Ma Trisha with his questions. she looks at me and then right back at him. I know from her looks that what prolly happened was out of the ordinary. She looks very pale and her eye can actually speak out the full story. I thrutch backwards and allow her move forward. She sighs but still on, she doesn’t say a word. I ponder in my heart wondering nd what king her she going her kind and what hodge might have gone through but I still can’t still figure it out. “It was a lot”she manages to spit out at last. I can only but imagine all that she went through. I can literally pick out the pain from her voice. “Please tell me more” Asher says with the utmost urge to want to know what happened. He is gritting his teeth right now with his hands clenched firmly. She doesn’t speak further. She continues to ogle at the both of us as though we are the one who are expected to speak and explain. I lock my lips and gulp down saliva while I allow
" You stand there and tell me you are sorry?" I bellowed. I brought the knife very close to his neck. He stayed there and moved not. "I do not care what you want to do with me. I know whatever comes my way from you, I really do deserve it. I was a son of a bitch and treated you like scum. You did everything to please me, but I was too stupid to have seen it." He voiced with a shaky voice that passed so many emotions, like a strummed guitar. His hands are still pointing downwards. His eyes quirked a second. I glared at him for seconds. My hands trembled as I had a very strong grasp on the knife. My face contorted and my eyes narrowed. All I felt in me was total bitterness. I really felt the urge to stab him but I was trying so hard to resist the demon." I just feel like killing you Rogers!!!! " I growled and placed the side of the sharp knife to his throat. I pressed slowly, but then it tipped on his neck. Suddenly blood started dripping little by little. I gnashed my teeth and wa
"When we have cookies, I play a game with her", Zelda said smiling and also relaxed on a seat." Game? What game is that?" I inquired, quite eager to find out what it was. My hands were laid on the table and eyes fixed on Mrs Zelda."It's a kind of questioning and truth" she said." Do you mean truth or dare?" "No, not that. Now the question and truth session is slightly different from truth or dare. In this game, before you pick a Cookie, someone would ask you a question and you have to be truthful to the core to answer the questions asked or the God of cookies is gonna take the cookies away." Her mom said and I chuckled." Disclaimer, Its just fiction and it's just some fun thing I do with her . She think it's true, so I use it to get answers from her when she lies to me because she loves cookies so much" her mom whispered to me because she was seated beside me. " Oh okay"I chortled."I will be right back, I need to get some milk" Zelda said and got up from her chair.I sighed de
"What is the plan?” Sir Luca questioned looking at us all. My eyes went to Adrain and wanted him to explain it because he made it.“ We do not really have a plan as of now because we are still not ready. Alina is the one who would be fighting Tiana…” he was still explaining when Sir lUca cut in.“ Why is it Aloka that would he going against Tiana? You should know how strong Tian is now at this moment. You know she is a witch and Also a balck wolf. I really do not think it is that great an idea for Alina to be the one that fights Tiana. I think you should be the one because she still has a soft spot For You and you can use that as namn upper hand to get her” Sur lUca said. In as much as I didn't want to get pissed but then I felt awkward. He sounded a though I was worthless.“ Let me out, let me show this Asshole what I am made of '' Maddy roared at me. The tone with which she used in vocalizing made me chuckle slightly.“Alina is the best person to go against Tiana not me because she
