Even with his back turned, Raeya could feel the authority emitted by her brother.

The chief was wearing a cape trimmed with dark gray wolf fur. He also wore wristbands made of black iron etched with old runes. Raeya knew he was shirtless, as was the custom of the Rigiddin, to be bare and raw yet strong. He looked back to her for a moment. A single strip of tattoo ran from his right eye down to his foot.

“Heal her.”

That was when she realized he wasn’t looking back at her.

All around, women in black dresses descended to the ground one by one, their white skin and inked tattooes glowing because of their backless outfit. Each of them held a huge fan almost the size of half of their body which had blades on the tips. Raeya held back her amazement. It was the Rokohorta dancers.

A familiar hand touched her shoulder.

“Sister…”

Ryder was led to the mountain of graves. It was the worst place for a fight. Mount Memoir was a resting place of both warriors and common folk. It was not right for them to battle here. The midnight moon loomed over the dark sky. Grey was there facing a familiar spot with a cemented familiar name—his name. “So this is supposed to be my grave?” He kicked his own tombstone with a fury that made the birds on the nearby trees fly away. Gone was the miniature stature of red glass marbled into his figure. The pieces scattered on the grass and they glinted crimson blood under the moonlight—a color that was inevitable to be spilled any moment from now. Ryder met Grey at Hearth's 300th graduation ceremony. He was this scrawny boy who had nothing to boast but his brain. Aegis was assigned to the security services while Ryder was called as a guest speaker. While the candidat

“Damn it!” Seyin kicked open the door to which the rest of the Aegis members in a meeting turned their attention to. “Where the hell is Ryder?!” he roared, eyeing everyone one by one as if expecting he would find the one he was looking for in the room. He had perfect timing. They were just sitting there anyway, not knowing what to do. Piles of report papers were in front of them, each one had the same message about what happened at the festival. It was ruined. And they were being blamed for the lack of security when in reality, Aegis was tired on their own. They had greatly decreased in number because of the civil war. Ryder was missing in action and Leison was still injured. They just weren't big enough, unlike before. “Calm down," Aura squeaked. "We have already talked about this before." Her usual jolly tone was replaced by fear and it was commendable of her to speak. But Seyin was not amused. “Cal

Ryder woke to the sound of someone whispering his name. His eyes were still half-open. Only then did he realize that the ceiling that he was staring at was white–something he wasn’t really fond of. He sat abruptly and regretted it. A wince escaped from his mouth and tried to push down the pain erupting from his stomach and sore body. That voice… His thoughts flew back to the voice that woke him but as he scanned the hospital room, no one was there. Upon realizing that it was just a mere dream, a different kind of pain weighed him down all the more. He had this feeling or rather longing that he just couldn’t get rid off no matter what he does. Two years has passed since that war yet to Ryder, it was as fresh as his physical wounds. It was not that he wouldn't break free, he just couldn’t at the moment. Ryder just wanted Aegis to be the best warring company in Khenealm. He wanted Aegis to be a source of hope and light that whenever people see their banners flying and the shield w

The boys were getting impatient. Aura kept on rolling her eyes as she was reporting to Leison through the phone. ''We can’t blame them,’’ Keyann said. ’’Five days and we’ve got nothing.’’ Raeya and the girls were tasked to gather intel. They were confident that the conjurers had somewhat special access into Khenealm due to the surprise attack back at the festival. Task number two was to find out their purpose on why would they suddenly attack at a convenient time without any clear objectives like they just wanted the government that they were back. And of course, that troublesome message left by the Hearth conjurers. WE WIN. That was w

''Macy.'' The little girl's name was enough to surprise the four ladies. All heads turned at the sound of the wooden doors opening at their back and in stepped a girl who had her golden hair in a bun and her fierce grey eyes roamed around the room as if ready to devour anyone--a miniature of Aegis' First Lady, though with a much childish expression. ''M-macy? Is that...'' Aura's voice trailed off. Macy looked at her from head to toe. Macy waved her hand without a smile at their direction, making everyone look at the red feather mark burned on the back of her right palm. ''Hello, Aegis.'' Her voice was casual but it sounded like they didn't know ea

When they reached the place, her friends attempted to talk her over it one more time. They were convincing her to back off and just wait for Leison's approval. But Nique shook her head. According to Macy, this was the day and time they entered the bar and so they had no better opportunity than now. She will not fail. Nique was the silent one in their group. It was not that she didn't want to interact with her friends. She was just content being happy for them. If they were playing games and their laughs would echo in the house, deep inside, she was also brimming with happiness even if she was by the windowsill. If they were swimming, whether at the beach or just at the river and seeing how refreshed they are, she was also glad that she came. That was her personality ever since she was a child which people around her hated. Her ac

Though Leison and Nique asked everyone to keep the news low, word travelled faster than they could stop it from spreading. Leison got numerous calls congratulating him, some hollering in laughter, but mostly were happy. News of their contract was like a ray of sunshine amidst all the pressure from Hearth's presence. Not only was it a break in the air, but it was an ace card on their side. Now, the enemy couldn't just attack from all sides because wherever Nique and Leison was, they could detect each other. Leison didn't just have the power of the brains, which was already fearsome enough, but he was also known for his long-range telecommunication skills. That power of his and along with Nique's superb teleportation ability, they were the worst combination for the enemy's favourite tactics which was surprise attacks. Having such a powerful duo would no longer surprise them if ever Hearth would attack again. Leison said that it was just a theory but it worked. There were no more movem

Ryder felt something at his back. He turned around, only to see wooden walls. Ryder was just about to let it slide, not until he heard that familiar voice--a voice that had been hunting him for a year ever since the civil war ended. "Ryder." He turned again, still finding nothing. He felt a chill in his bones. After he left the hospital, he found an inn. He knew that the old man wouldn't let him go tomorrow even if he was discharged because the old man was already making plans of calling the Triad to arrange for them to come and get him. That night, de dreamt that old man Nysou was scolding him in his dream. ''I thought you had already learned your lesson,'' he had said. ''Nothing good comes out of chasing the dead. Jin had a feeling his discussion with Fahazi about leaders going at the forefront jinxed the night.“Go!” He commanded as he pulled Fahazi to his feet and pushed him to get him running. As they ran, Jin looked behind. He could make out nothing because of the darkness but he felt shadows following them. He grabbed Fahazi’s hand and sped across the tunnels. They only had one flashlight. Fahazi must have lost his own light during the explosion.Jin felt something was about to fall on them. He felt dust and debris fall upon his face as they ran. “Fall back, Fahazi!” Both of them were able to stop just in time before the ceiling gave way. If they had advanced one second further, they would have already been buried in a pile of huge blocks of cement and dirt.It didn’t stop there. A slight tremor was felt from above.“This way,” Fahazi suggested as he pointed to one of the tunnels which didn’t seem to be shaking. Jin nodded and they entered the tunnel to their left.“Do you think we can st

Grey wasn't someone who was easily intimidated. Even with Ryder and Leison had him on gunpoint and swordpoint, he still wore the same smug expression.''You're pretty confident this time, Aegis.'' He wasn't fazed at all with the pressure around him. ''Have you finally moved on from your humiliation in our last war?''This position was familiar with the battle at Hearth. Ryder had also cornered Grey in their laboratory. Grey wasn't yet a fighter or a conjurer back then, just a normal scientist who only knew how to wield science and technology. That was why Ryder decided that he wouldn't kill him. He diverted his focus on the Shadows that Hearth released. However, Grey took advantage of Ryder's soft heart back then. He summoned Absinthe and the rest was history.''You're provoking the wrong people. You should be telling that to your bosses,'' Leison answered.''I wouldn't call that a word of provocation. It's just called a taunt.'' Grey was feeling extra powerful now. Was there some rea

If Raeya could recall properly, the men said they were going to answer her questions after they had tied her up but now she was the one tying all of six of them up. It was a good thing she found a rope in one of the toolboxes of the saleslady or else she would have to knock them unconscious every five minutes that they woke up.Raeya pressed the switch and a single dim bulb was brought back to life. Its light was yellowish but it would serve its purpose just for the room to do away with the darkness. She tried calling her friends but she was stumped after realizing that there was no signal. Raeya hoped that Aegis was doing well and that nothing bad happened. Raeya didn’t know why but she was feeling ominous like something big happened. Or was that her overthinking? After securing their hands, she dragged them into the corner and made their backs lean on the wall, away from any object that they could grab and free themselves. She was waiting for the leader, the one with a red turban,

He was pretty confident that he could get inside without doing anything not until he saw the entrance. The ones going in and out had some sort of special tattoos on their skin which they were showing to the guards. Lidon was still wary of the guerilla army.He had wrapped his dagger to make them think that he had lowered his guard. But since no one was still attacking them, then it is safe to assume that they are safe for now. They led them through the forest until they reached a hanging bridge. In this time, it was unusual to see a wooden bridge when they were living in the age of development. The bridge was just a collection of blocks of wood bound together by rubber ties and twigs. A river with sharp rocks twenty feet spread below.“Let’s go two at a time or else the bridge will break,” the woman with the golden tooth said. That goes without saying. It was as if the bridge was designed to not welcome visitors. As ancient and old-looking the bridge was, the new guerilla army seemed to have no problem with it. Wayl and the woman went ahead first. It was only the two of them but the bridge swayed so much.“That seems scary,” Maryan whispered beside him.“We can’t do anything about it, can’t we
