Reece held the phone in his hand following Breeana's scent.
How could they have moved so fast?
He rounded the corner and caught sight of Breeana's long dark hair only that wimp was leaning into Breeana, her hands on his shoulder. Then he kissed Breeana.
Reece saw red. He pocketed the phone, crossed the distance between them and punched the guy in the face. Rage burned him from the inside out and he could no longer control himself.
*****
"Reece! Reece stop hitting him! Reece!"
Breeana shouted trying to pull Reece off Ryan who was trying all he could to dodge the punches that Reeve kept throwing.
It wasn't going too well however, Reece was larger, stronger and more dominant than Ryan. If Breeana didn't stop him, he could shift and hurt Ryan really badly.
Reece looked possessed, lost and so viciously angry that cold fear gripped Breeana's heart.
Breeana prayed she wasn't about to do something exceptionally stupid then she stepped between both of them directly in Reece's line of fire. "Stop!"
Breeana opened her eyes that she didn't realize that had shut. Reece's fist had stopped just inches from her face and he looked less crazed. He dropped his fist.
Behind her, she heard Ryan shuffle back and take off before Reece could change his mind. Immediate danger averted, Breeana turned on Reece.
"What the hell was that about? You can't just hit anyone you don't like. Ryan did nothing wrong–" Reece touched her cheek and she froze.
Sparks erupted beneath her skin at his touch and she forgot what she had been about to say. "Reece?"
He leaned forward and buried his face in her nape. His breath on her neck caused Breeana to shiver and her left hand went automatically to the back hairs on his head. She placed her right hand on his shoulder and tried to push him back to look him in the eye.
Was everything alright? Did something happen? Her blue eyes met his usually bright green eyes which looked darker. Stormier. And suddenly she knew what this was all about.
Before she could speak however he kissed her. When their lips met, she lost all sense of self and direction. She forgot her name, her decision to never accept him as her mate, she forgot she had a sister who was dating him. It was just him and her.
It felt natural to open her mouth to him, to slide her tongue against his, to grab his shoulder and to shiver against his lips as his hands trailed down her lower back. To offer her neck to him when his lips finally left hers to catch a breath. His lips and teeth kissed, caressed and bit at her neck and she moaned. Why had she waited so long to do this again? Reece obviously knew what he was doing–
Breeana pushed him away panting. He took a step towards her subconsciously before visibly stopping himself.
They stood and stared at each other in abject horror.
Had Reece really… and she had… oh Goddess.
Breeana recovered first and walked away really quickly to the nearest washroom which was thankfully empty. She silently screamed at herself and freaked out.
She had kissed Reece Gavin. Reece Gavin, her sister's boyfriend had kissed her.
How could she have? She wasn't even attracted to the guy. Granted he was handsome with a beautifully sculpted body but still– wait a minute, had she just thought of Reece's body as beautifully sculpted?
What was happening to her?
Breeana stared at herself in the mirror barely recognizing herself. Her black hair was mussed and she had a sudden flashback of Reece fisting her hair, his tongue in her mouth. She blinked away the memory.
One of her bra straps had snapped, she didn't even realize when that had happened, her lips were swollen and red. There was a smear of blood on her cheek from Reece's bleeding hand. And her neck. There was a large red mark there that was going to bruise and turn into the biggest hickey known to man in hours.
Breeana touched her lips, the memory of Reece's lips on them made her cheeks burn. Her hand left her lips and drifted to her neck and the bruise. The memory of them together made her clench her fists.
Breeana turned on the tap and splashed cold water on her face.
What the hell had she just done? What had she been thinking about making out with someone like Reece? He wasn't a good person, he was seeing her sister and had beat up Ryan for no good reason.
Our mate was being protective of us. Scar argued.
Breeana almost jolted back in shock. Scar was sounding like her usual self again and she was defending Reece?
No, Scar he is not our mate. He's my sister's boyfriend/fiance/soon-to-be mate. Not mine. I'd never do that to Ariana.
Breeana fixed her hair and styled it so it fell over one shoulder obscuring the bruise Reece left on her neck then she left the washroom.
She hunted down and found Ryan at the ER. He looked a little worse for wear, his left eye was swollen and it looked like a black eye was coming in.
Breeana took a seat at his bedside. "How bad is it?"
"Just a few cracked ribs and a black eye. Nothing a good night's rest won't fix."
While wolves tended to heal really quickly from injuries, wounds inflicted by other wolves depending on the strength of that wolf took a longer time to heal. Ryan would have to rock his injuries for days.
"Personally, I think you'll still rock a black eye either way."
Ryan smiled then a shadow came over his face.
"Why did he do it though?"
"Who?" Breeana feigned confusion.
"Reece. It was like he had a beef against me or something. We've never even had a deep conversation."
Breeana felt a surge of fear. If Ryan was able to put two and two together then… no, she had to cover this up. Quickly. If Ariana were to even discover this…
"You know ever since Ariana and Reece finalized their decision to get mated, he has been extremely protective of me. Like I'm his little sister or something."
"You two are always at loggerheads though." He seemed a little sceptical.
"Yeah I hate his guts and he does mine but I'm still like his little sister, you know. You and I… we don't have the best history together. He was looking out for me. Plus you know Reece, he has a short fuse." Breeana took a deep breath and dived into the elephant in the room.
The conversation they had been having before the kiss and fight had derailed them.
"Look, Ryan. We can't work as a couple. I no longer feel that way towards you. I want to be your friend though. These past weeks getting to know each other again and giving our friendship another chance has been everything to me. I hope we can still keep that. Our friendship was and has been everything to me."
"I really fucked us up, didn't I?" Ryan looked at her and gave a sad wistful smile.
"Ryan, its–"
"Don't worry about it. My feelings are my business, not yours. I want to be your friend, Bree. I want to be way more than that but I can work on that. You're my oldest friend, Bree. I don't want to lose you."
"Me neither, Ryan. Me neither."
*****
Reece clenched and unclenched his fists as he sat on the deserted staircase to the side entrance of the clinic. His right hand was wrapped. It would be fine by evening but he wasn't sure he was going to be. Nancy had given him a deep penetrating stare before leaving him with his wrapped hand.
Reece always knew what he had wanted in life and never hesitated to take it. He loved Ariana. He knew it with the same conviction that he knew the sun would rise tomorrow. So why did it feel so good to kiss Breeana like that?
Why was even the memory of it enough to cause a riot of emotions within him? And Ryan. He hated the dude's face but to pummel him like that over just a kiss?
The scent of Breeana drew him out of his head. She smelt like wildflowers, honey and pressed berries. And she looked livid.
"Reece Gavin, you are such a dick. I thought we were bonding. I thought you know what maybe I was mistaken about you all along but you proved me wrong."
"Breeana, I–"
"No, Reece. Now I will speak and you will listen. You have no right over me. Who I speak to, go out with, kiss, fuck, isn't your business. You were in no place to beat Ryan up because he kissed me."
Reece growled. "You didn't want him to kiss you. I saw…"
"I don't care what you saw. Oh, you are now the expert on what I want, my personal genie? Great. Let me tell you what I want. I want you to man the fuck up and face your relationship with my sister. I want you to leave me alone and stop being possessive about me and I want to never see your face again." She whirled on her heels about to leave when he caught one of her hands.
"Breeana." It was a plea and an apology. She hesitated then she shrugged off his grip and walked away without a backwards glance at him.
"So what's up with you and Ryan?"Ariana asked Breeana over at the dinner table.Breeana paused. "Nothing.""Oh. Okay." Ariana said, looking at her strangely.Breeana ignored Ariana's questioning tone and reached for the salt shaker at the exact time that Reece did. Both of them dropped their hands simultaneously and Breeana hoped her sister hadn't noted the odd interaction."We haven't been seeing you around as much as usual Reece." Arthur, Breeana's dad commented curiously."Oh, he's busy with his Alpha training. Gotta get him ready for leading this pack. I know he will do exceptionally well and let this old man retire in peace." Alpha Sean joked."The last thing you are is old, Sean. I brought dessert." Martha dropped the pie on the table before settling in next to her husband.Breeana was slowly coming to dread these dinners where she had to come in contact with Reece. They had successfully avoided each other since that incident and she wanted it to remain that way if she had any
His eyes were hooded and inviting as he gazed down at her like he hadn't seen anything or anyone as exquisite as she. Her core clenched with want as his lips dipped to her collarbone, nipping, teasing. She clung to him feeling needy, gasping as he reached her nipples. He sucked on her and she couldn't hold back a moan. "Please, Reece."Breeana woke up drenched in sweat and wetter than she had ever been in her life.It had felt so real that she had to look around to check if Reece was actually in the room. She closed her eyes and tried to get her mind and her breathing under control. The dreams had started almost immediately after she'd taken Reese to the hospital.Dreams where they did all sorts of things to each other. Dreams where she forgot or didn't remember they weren't going to ever be a thing. It would have made seeing him in person awkward except they barely saw each other.Reece was now taking up more security-related responsibilities so she didn't see him at the clinic anymo
His body was a marvel. He stood unashamed. Why wouldn't he when he had nothing to be ashamed of? Although Breeana had seen him shirtless, seeing him naked was something else entirely and left her breathless for all the right reasons. She stared at his strong thighs up to his…Breeana shook herself mentally. She couldn't stare at him in that manner, it was Reece for fuck's sake. Reece. Then she noticed he was also staring at her body. His eyes raked her exposed body shamelessly and she found herself reacting to his stare instead of flaring up at him."You shouldn't be looking at me like that, Reece." She finally found her voice fixing her eyes on his eyes, determined to not look below his neck."I know."But he kept looking at her so intensely that her cheeks burned."Then stop.""Do you want me to?" Reece's voice sounded so arrogant and self-satisfied that Breeana found herself wanting to hit him."Yes. You are so disgusting, it's super unattractive."Reece moved closer to Breeana and
"If you touch that chicken, I'll break your wrist."Naturally, Breeana's mom had to bring violence into everything."Mom, I'll still eat it at dinner. What is the difference?" Breeana whined, her voice in childish tones that always got her dad to do whatever she wanted."Touch it and find out."Like she would be that stupid.Breeana rolled her eyes and caught Ariana's gaze, Ari seemed to be biting back a laugh at the exchange between them. Breeana grumbled under her breath but dropped the plate on the dining table without taking anything from it."Is that chicken I smell?" Bree's dad wandered into the dining room, took one fried chicken thigh from the plate and bit down on it. "Oh my. I think I should invite Sean over more often. You never make anything like this for me.""Because I'm trying to keep you healthy." Breeana's mom sounded like she was about to throw something at her husband. Something heavy and blunt. Her dad must have felt the same because he turned to Breana and spoke
Ariana was in the hallway. They pulled apart. There was no way Breeana could leave without being seen. Breeana nearly slapped herself. When had she become so enslaved to her body's desires and needs? Ariana rounded the corner. Breeana thought fast and tripped herself making sure to land with a thump and yelled out loud, naturally, Reece reached out and tried to help her up just as Ariana reached the balcony.Ariana was a wolf so she would scent Breeana all over Reece so running off was off the table. Also, Breeana couldn't see herself but her hair had escaped the bun she had put it in courtesy of Reece's wandering hands so she knew she would look messy.Trying to stand up, Breeana latched onto Reece so that that would explain her scent on him. Then once she got her feet beneath her, she shoved him away trying to balance on her 'twisted ankle'.He stood there visibly puzzled. He knew Ariana was at the doorway but still didn't know what to make of Breeana's 'fall'."I don't need your bl
"I can't believe you are opening a store already. I am so happy for you." Breeana hugged Callie and Callie giggled. They had been catching up for hours now. Ryan was running late so Callie had broken down and told Breeana about her store's opening.Breeana couldn't believe Callie was already opening a clothing store and line. No, she could believe it. Her girl had been putting in so much effort so definitely it was going to pay off. It just seemed like Breeana was the only one stuck in one phase in her life. Reece. It had been a week since the dinner and everything wasn't fine. Okay, things were fine but Breeana could barely face herself. She felt that ashamed about everything that had gone down. Ariana hadn't even suspected a thing making her feel even worse. To his credit, Reece had kept their interactions since then brief and distant even when they were alone. Especially when they were alone. It was a relief and a bother. It was a relief because she wanted to do right by her sister
Breeana was running through her usual route that morning. The air was crisp and cold, just how she liked it and she was finally beginning to get out of her own head. There was no Breeana, no Reece. Just peaceful quiet and nature. She ran in human form today because she and Shar had been at loggerheads for some time now about Reece. Shar had told her that she was being a hypocrite. For someone who wanted nothing with Reece, why was she constantly thinking about him?Breeana didn't have an answer for her yet. Shar was ignoring her presently. It hurt Breeana that Reece had also come between her and her wolf. All the while he just remained unaware and blissfully oblivious, he was too busy with the woman of his dreams to realise how much of the fallout she was taking.Maybe it was because she was thinking about Reece and not so much about her surroundings that it happened. After all, she passed this route every day so she had been lulled into a state of complacency. While running, she tri
After meeting Anya, Reece had immediately wanted to get Breeana sent off but Ryan had put his foot down. He had threatened Reece with completely cutting him off from his wolf side. He couldn't be Alpha if he had no wolf after all.Do you see now Ryan? Because of us, Breeana was in danger today. If I had already sent her away, none of this would have happened.Ryan was silent but the silence felt contemplative.Reece focused on where he was headed and the container in his pocket that seemed unexpectedly heavy.*******Ariana got the phone call after her shower. When she saw Reece's caller ID she had been elated, she'd thought maybe he wanted to fix a date or something. Then she picked up the call. She shook uncontrollably and pulled on the first outfit in her cupboard. Ariana rushed out of the house towards the clinic. She hoped Breeana was fine. On her way there, however, someone bumped into her. It was Sarah. Her usually impeccably styled hair was streaked with dirt and dry leaves. H
Six Years Later"Can I take you to lunch?"Sarah threw a mean left hook that had Jared struggling to keep his balance. He always favoured his right a little bit too much."No.""Sarah…"She didn't let him continue before releasing a barrage of blows that got his head back into the fight and away from emotional talks. An hour later, she was walking out of the training centre with a bag slung over her shoulder after her shower."Sarah, please wait up."She didn't. She kept walking because she really didn't want to have this conversation. He easily caught up to her though with his long legs."So off to pick up Cole?"Sarah stopped walking."What do you want? Please speak directly."Jared looked at her with hurt brown eyes that eerily reminded her of Allen."I'm trying to have a conversation with you, Sarah.""And I'm trying not to. We train together. That's all.""It doesn't have to be. We can be friends–""I apologise for my mistake. I shall find another trainer." Sarah nodded brusquely
Breeana opened her eyes and nearly screamed.Reece. She had to get to Reece. But what could she do on her own?No, if there was one thing that Anya had thought of her it was that she needed backup. She knew that Reece and the others had a contingency plan where their forces could charge in and rescue them but that plan had relied on the use of their pack links. She didn't even know where the forces were situated. Reece hadn't told her and she hadn't thought to ask."What do I do? What should I do?"She paced the length of her room and then inspiration struck. Of course. How could she have forgotten?Sarah. She would know.*****"We need to get to them now."Sarah had known. She had known that something like this would happen. She had suspected it and now Allen was trapped in a room with Damien she would have felt fear if there was time.Every minute she dawdled was time that Allen couldn't afford especially with the vendetta that Damien had against him."I know where they are camped a
Breeana puked again and her belly contracted in response. She was in the bathroom for another hour or so before she felt strong enough to make her way out.She had woken up with morning sickness and by God, it wasn't what it was hyped up to be.She hadn't even been able to wish Reece goodbye properly and she knew that if the coronation hadn't been that day he would have stayed with her until she felt better. She was barely seated on her bed before she felt a tug on the bond. It wasn't unusual these days for her to feel that way but what made her pause was the fact that Reece was in a closed-door meeting with a cold-blooded murderer. Relaxing herself, she let herself drift until she connected with him and then she was…******"Today we are here for something momentous. Because for the first one in centuries, we will be welcoming in a monarch. Someone who will lead us through these dark abysmal times."Reece sat in his seat exchanging side glances with some of his allies. Adelaide looke
"You are asking me to stay behind?" Breeana glared at Reece, she couldn't believe that mere days ago she had cried and wished desperately that he would wake up.Now she felt the almost stifling urge to suffocate him. Ugh. He was so annoying and so obstinate that it was a marvel that they were still together.Truly."I just want you to stay safe while all this is going on." He leaned in and dropped a kiss on her forehead before touching her belly. "You and our child."Breeans pulled away before she would melt against his concern and sweet words the way she had been melting for the past few days since he woke up.Suffice to say that their fight had been long forgotten almost immediately after he woke up and she kissed him like the weirdo she was.No, Breeana do not think of kisses. She chided herself. Or of all the other things he had done to her and she had done to him."So I'm supposed to just sit in my hands while all the men I care about go off to fight a maniac? Come on, Reece. I'
"You shacked up with a council member?"Breeana looked at Sarah shocked beyond belief.Sarah blushed. "I didn't know that at first."Breeana kept staring at her."And he's Cole's dad?""Yes."When Breeana had come to threaten Sarah to talk to her the last thing she had thought of was this.Sarah had taken one look at her thunderous expression and scented the blood on her before letting her in and telling her what had to be the surprising thing that Breeana had heard since the beginning of this fiasco."Bloody hell, does Allen know about this?" Was she the only one to be blindsided by all this?"I… I haven't gotten around to telling him I guess I just wanted it to go away." Sarah brushed her hair out of her face. "He's the only father that Cole will ever have. The only father I want my child to have. I thought if I ignored it, it would stay that way."Breeana looked at her like she had hit her head on the wall one too many times. Wanted what to go away? For all they knew this was proba
The ambush was quiet, this was their land after all. They knew every nook and cranny of it and more than that they were preternaturally quick and quiet. The hunters on the other hand were loud and clumsy in comparison. They must have thought they would take their pack the way they had taken the others. They were wrong. As the hunters sat around their campfire, discussing their strategy for the upcoming attack, they surrounded them."We enter from the north and–"Allen gave the signal and they attacked. The hunters quickly reached for their weapons, but they were too slow and the werewolves were too fast. They pounced on the hunters, their razor-sharp claws tearing through flesh and bone. The hunters fought back with guns and knives, but they were no match for the werewolves' supernatural strength and agility. The air was filled with the sound of snarling and screaming as the werewolves tore apart their prey. The hunters tried to retreat, but the werewolves were relentless, chasing the
Poison. The word resounded over and over in her head long after Reece had been wheeled into the ER.Someone had poisoned him.She felt a touch on her shoulder. It was Sarah."It's going to be fine, Bree." She comforted her, her voice low and compassionate.Only that was a farce, wasn't it?A terrible suspicion bloomed in her mind as she turned on Sarah. She had been there last night and suddenly Reece got poisoned. She didn't think it was a coincidence.Breeana gripped her by her throat watching her choke."It was you wasn't it?" Breeana squeezed harder, her vision going red. They had granted her mercy and she had gone and done this.Reece was… her mate was…. Just when she had wanted to give their relationship another shot. It was almost too cruel."I swear…" Sarah coughed trying to breathe through the strangling sensation around her throat where Breeana held her immobile."Don't fucking lie to me. You are still in contact with your people, right? You didn't tell Allen everything, did
"We should just execute her and be done with it." Breeana said offhandedly and Reece stifled a laugh."Sure. Any more unreasonable requests you would like to add?"Breeana mock glared at him but a smile peeked through. She was surprised that they could even joke about this. The moment she had seen Ivy she had frozen thinking about the last time they had seen each other.Ivy didn't try to attack them or even struggle. She just turned herself in and allowed herself to be detained. Breeana and Reece had been shocked to hear that she had lost her pregnancy and that she was willing to sell her father and his moles in their pack out in exchange for her freedom."Why did you even bother coming back? You could have just stayed in Europe. There is no way we would have tracked you down." Breeana asked her still suspicious about her return and willingness.Ivy locked gazes with her. "I don't fancy being a fugitive for a murder I didn't even commit and I refuse to be used as a chess piece in my f
Breeana looked at Reece suddenly unable to speak as he walked towards her with the bottle hanging limply from his hand.He reached her.She didn't know what to expect. No, that was wrong. She did know what to expect. It was Reece after all. He would yell at her and question her about why she hid it from him and then he'd–Reece fell on his knees and pressed his ear against her belly, his arms encircling her waist delicately.Breeana froze as he listened for the heartbeat of their child and he reacted in the most peculiar way that she could never have anticipated. He began to cry.Not loudly but softly. Breeana was confused but tried to comfort him in her own way by cradling his head against her belly. And for some minutes they stayed that way. They just stood and it was okay. Strange but okay."I'm sorry, Bree. Sorry that I made you feel the need to hide this from me."Oh, Reece. How could he be so uptight and downright annoying sometimes only to soften up and be nice later? She felt
