Spencer's POV

“Father is dead.”

All at once, everything else seems to fade away. Dimly, I can hear Sylvia gasping, and she leans backward heavily in her seat as she buries her face in her hands. Soon, the sound of her crying fills the air. It sounds far away, though, dimmed by static like I’m underwater. Father is dead. The Lycan King. My father–my father who I spoke to not even an hour ago, the man whose last words to me were telling me to leave, telling me what a disappointment I’ve been to him my whole life–

He’s dead.

My father is dead.

How am I supposed to feel about this?

I want to feel something. I do feel something, I think, a faint tug of sadness pulling at my gut. But he was awful to me–he was awful to all of us. Sylvia and I were just discussing it. We have no shortage of anecdotes when it comes to his abuse. He’s never been much of a father to me–I was raised by nannies and, later on, by the battlefield.

I don’t have much of a father to mourn.

Colin sits down heavily

Spencer's POV“You bastard!” I stand up in a flash, kicking the chair aside as I walk towards Colin. In an instant, my hands are upon him, pressing him against the back of his sea. I’m standing up while he’s sitting down, which means I have the height advantage–an advantage I make good use of as I wrap my hands around his throat. I press my fingers into the center of his neck, that soft vulnerable spot that can steal air in a heartbeat, and use the full weight of my body to lean into him. I can feel his windpipe beneath my fingers, fragile and easy enough to crush, but that would be too quick of a death for him. I don’t want to end him quickly for what he’s done. I want to drag it out. I want to make him suffer. “You killed our father!” I roar at him, eyes blazing with fury as my voice fills the dining hall with my rage. “You killed him–” “Spencer!” Sylvia’s desperate voice cuts through the air. Suddenly, I feel small hands on my shoulders pulling me back. There’s no real force b

Spencer's POV“What’s this about?” My mother’s brow is furrowed as she steps into the dining hall alongside Wilson. I can tell that she must be confused–after all, it’s rare that all three of her children are together in the same room unless she’s specifically requested it. But here we are, all gathered together with shadowed expressions. “Sylvia, what’s going on?” My mother asks as she approaches us. She continues to look between all of us, and when her gaze settles on Colin, she lets out a loud gasp. “What happened to you?” My mother asks, rushing towards him and tilting his head up before he can protest. “Colin, who…” Out of the three of us, Colin certainly looks the most worst off. Between the blood on his shirt and the bruises on his throat, as well as his red face and eyes from my choking him, he looks like an absolute wreck. Before Colin even gets the chance to push her away, she’s let go of him. Her severe expression settles on me and contorts into a fierce, bitter glare

Spencer's POVI don’t know what sort of reaction I was expecting from my mother upon learning of her husband’s demise, but as I stare into her eyes, what I see there surprises me.She doesn’t look scared, or sad, or confused. She looks grim. As the news hits her, my mother blinks once, twice, three times before drawing in a deep breath. She sets her jaw and pulls her shoulders back, iron in her posture. Her face, etched with wrinkles and lines yet regal as it’s always been, is a mask of determination. She allows herself the space of mere moments before clasping her hands together and setting them on her chest. “What happened?” Wilson asks in surprise. His eyes are wide, and he pulls Sylvia even closer. “Oh, my love, I’m so sorry for your loss…” “Quiet, Wilson,” my mother says sharply. She presses her fingers to her temples, momentarily lost in thought. “Alright. Who knows?” Colin’s voice falls open. Clearly, he was expecting messy emotions. Distress. I was, too. He doesn’t seem

Spencer's POV“I don’t know what you want me to say.” Colin’s words are shielded, obviously sliding around the question. I raise my eyebrow at him and look him over carefully. If Colin really was the one who killed my father, wouldn’t he try to do a better job of hiding it? “I want you to explain what happened in the moments before your father’s death,” my mother replies severely. I can tell by the stern expression on her face that her thoughts align with mine. “Spare no detail.” “I don’t–it’s all so hazy…” Colin says slowly. “Then try to piece it together,” my mother replies slowly. She closes her eyes for a moment, then snaps them open a moment later. “I’m having Captain McAndrews and the rest of the guard seal down the palace for the time being, no given cause yet. And we’ll have to retrieve your father’s body eventually. Things are moving quickly, Colin. I don’t have time to waste on this.” I examine my mother carefully. I’ve known my whole life that, while it may not seem t

Spencer's POVWhen Colin looks at me, just for a moment, I can see genuine fear flash across his expression. I can tell that he’s trying to formulate a lie–it would be easy enough, considering the conversation was just between Colin and my father. Colin is the only person alive to relay what was said. There’s no one to verify or corroborate that story. But between watching my father die, my attack on him, and now my mother’s scrutiny, I can tell that he’s struggling to come up with anything. “I swear it wasn’t important,” Colin says quietly. “I’ll be the judge of that,” my mother replies. Her gaze weighs heavily upon him, and I can tell she’s watching his every expression, his every gesture. She’s trying to read him the best she can. We both are. There’s a crucial missing piece here, and it seems like Colin is trying to hold onto it for as long as he possibly can. Distantly, throughout the palace, I can hear the sound of doors slamming shut and frantic footsteps. The palace see

Spencer's POV“I wanted your engagement to be cancelled so I could marry Delilah myself.” The words don’t hit me with the sort of impact Colin likely expects. Truthfully, I couldn’t care less about how he feels about my fiancé. But for the sake of maintaining the ruse, I let a small spark of anger ignite in my eyes and glower at Colin. “You wanted what?” I ask lowly, hissing the words out. “And you talked to our father about this?” Colin huffs, looking away. “It–it’s not what you think!” He stammers out.“Isn’t it?” I ask coldly. “I saw the way you spoke with Ivy. The way you flirted with her. You–you tried to put your hands on her!” Here, my anger is real, blood boiling as I remember how I felt watching Colin try to hit on Ivy over and over again. “You tried to drive a wedge between us, and you didn’t rest until you succeeded. But the moment she and I split up, you’re after the girl I’m with now? How fucking pathetic are you?” “But Ivy didn’t mean anything to me!” Colin protests.

Ivy's POVJason has been crying into my arms for the better part of an hour, and I’m starting to get really worried about him. I haven’t wanted to interrupt him so far, but he seems to be settling now. His cries have become softer, and I think the tears have stopped falling from his eyes. I rub Jason’s back gently. I wish there was more I could do to support him through everything he’s going through right now, but I can’t fix things for him. All I can do is be there. “Hey,” I say softly. “How are you doing?” “I–I’m so sorry,” Jason sniffles, looking up at me. “I’m so sorry for everything.” “I know,” I reply gently. “It’s okay. Everything is okay now. We can get through this. I love you, you know.” Jason looks up reluctantly. His face is red, pudgy cheeks traced with tears. He wipes his eyes. “I love you too, Mom.” Mom. My heart warms. I smile down at him, setting both my hands on his shoulders. “How are you feeling?” I ask him. “Is there anything I can do for you right now?” “

Ivy's POV“Explain.” My voice isn’t cold, exactly, as I stare Delilah down. I’m not trying to be mean, but I know now to keep my distance when it comes to dealing with her–to not get invested, to keep my cards close to my chest. I tilt my head at her and narrow my eyes, waiting for an answer. Delilah shrugs weakly, looking away. She looks scared and defeated, but I don’t buy it for one second. She swooped in like a vulture picking at the weak spots in my relationship with Spencer, and she struck the moment she saw an opening. If Delilah is capable of being that heartless when it comes to Spencer, I don’t think there are any lines she’s beyond crossing. I don’t like what she could do. I find my hand drifting over my stomach protectively. I wonder what she’d think if she found out about my pregnancy. I wonder what she’d do. “I haven’t been able to get a hold of Spencer,” Delilah says in a quiet, tremulous voice. She takes a step towards me. Instinctively, I push Jason behind me,

Spencer’s POV“Run!” My warning to Alpha Fierro echoes through the darkened office seemingly unheard. As the shadows continue to creep around my field of vision, obscuring everything from view, my heart thuds in my chest. Never before had I been scared of an enemy until encountering the witch. I shift fluidly into my wolf form, powerful arms and legs rippling with muscles, fangs and teeth sharp as daggers. My growl is a low, warning rumble in the base of my throat. Despite my heightened sentences as I continue to peer ahead, ears trained to detect the slightest sense of movement, I still have no idea where the witch is. “Reveal yourself, coward!” I shout, my voice echoing through the room. “You betray your honour by slinking around in the shadows.” The witch’s laugh, low and melodious, fills the air. There’s a haunting coldness to it. “Honour is a werewolf construct,” she says. “And it’s so unlike a proud, foolish warrior to consider it a cowardly action to win a battle with intel

  • Rescuing His Enslaved Luna Queen   Chapter 421: On The Brink

Ivy’s POVThe longer I stay in the hospital bed, the more I can feel myself beginning to crumble. The pain is ceaseless in its intensity, great waves of agony that crash over me without letting up for even a second. I can’t scream, can’t cry, can’t move. I’ve given up on trying to call in any of the nurses when the flareups get too bad–all they’ll do is look at me sadly, scared of doing anything to make me worse, scared of simply standing by and watching the queen die. There’s an IV flowing an endless stream of pain medication into my veins, which is helping somewhat, but it’s not enough. All I can do is feel this. Until it kills me, I suppose. I have no idea where Spencer is–after he rushed out of my room unexpectedly like that, he never came back. I’ve heard some whispers floating around the hospital about a great escapade, about the looming creep of a plague sweeping through the kingdom. If it really is a plague, I hope more than anything that Tala didn’t catch it from me. If

Spencer’s POV“Alpha Fierro, I need you to focus up.” The words are harsh as they leave my mouth, but I’m not trying to be malicious, although it’s true that things desperately need to get moving. The longer I spend in the Sunclash pack, the more on edge I feel. Every wall in sight feels like it’s closing in on me, and I can feel the sickness permeating the air. There’s a heaviness to this place now, an endless sense of dread. I have a feeling that this ground will carry the weight of all its deaths for a long, long time. “Scour the office for anything that seems out of place,” I say. “If your Beta was in charge of the pack in your absence, it’s likely that he was the one putting any preventative measures into place. He may have tried to find a cure–hopefully there are signs somewhere around here.” I look down at the man’s corpse, the papers clutched in his fist and the expression of profound horror on his face. “I read his reports. He seems to have been a confident, driven man. I’

  • Rescuing His Enslaved Luna Queen   Chapter 419: Haunted

Spencer’s POV‘I think a considerable number of people managed to leave, contaminated or not.’ The longer Beta Wilson’s words echo through my mind, the more I begin to realize the scale of the potential disaster we might have on our hands. Where would any contaminated werewolves go? To the surrounding packs, most likely, and from there, the plague could spread from pack to pack to pack endlessly, ultimately becoming a worldwide pandemic…I whirl around to look at Alpha Fierro. “What was your relationship with other packs like?” I ask him urgently. “If any of your pack members were to turn up there looking for help, would they receive it?” “Probably, yeah,” Alpha Fierro says. “We tended to keep things as peaceful as possible. Unless there was very clearly something wrong going on, no one would have any reason to turn any of our members away.” I curse silently under my breath. “Keep heading towards the pack house,” I tell Alpha Fierro, already starting to walk away from him and back

  • Rescuing His Enslaved Luna Queen   Chapter 418: Ghost Town

Spencer’s POVMost of my skin has already been covered by my day clothes, but in the few places I’m not, I can feel the hazmat suit’s crinkly plastic resting against me uncomfortably. I shudder as the plastic continues to shift. It clings uncomfortably to my skin and is far from stealthy, causing a loud rumpling sound to ring out with every step. I’d hoped that we could carry out this surveillance with at least the slightest bit of stealth and decorum, but as the entire haphazard team of us begins to make our way into the Sunclash pack, it becomes more and more evident that that’s just not going to happen. Through the suit’s bulbous plastic dome, I make eye contact with Doctor Danbury, clearly far from amused. She purses her lips, and I can see my own frustration mirrored on her face as we continue to lug equipment around. “I know,” she says, coming up to walk beside me. “Believe me, I hate the suits too. Easily one of my least favourite parts of this job. But whatever wiped this p

Spencer’s POVAs we all sit in the back of a sleek, high-speed limo, I can’t help but feel thick tendrils of dread curling throughout my stomach. Every second I spend away from Ivy feels like I could be missing her final moments, and the fear over what could happen to her is making me sick. “The hazmat suits will be uncomfortable,” Doctor Danbury warns, holding up a hideous yellow baggy bodysuit. The plastic crinkles under her touch. “And the tanks on the back are going to poke weirdly. It’s no fun to wear, I know. But we still don’t quite know the extent of the toxicity of the environment we’re about to enter, so right now, safety is of the utmost importance. It’s possible that we’ll be able to take the suits off once I’ve run a couple tests and deemed the area safe, but I have no idea yet.” “Whatever it is, it seems to be highly contagious,” Alpha Fierro says somberly. Doctor Danbury nods. “The last thing we want to do is bring an uncontained plague back to the Lycan Kingdom, so

  • Rescuing His Enslaved Luna Queen   Chapter 416: Preventative Measures

Spencer’s POVJust as Beta Wilson and Alpha Fierro make their way out of my office, I see Alpha Leo slip through the doorway. He looks much better than he did the last time I saw him–there are still the occasional cuts and bruises marring his skin, a couple ridged scars in the process of forming, but Alpha Leo seems to be walking without much pain. His posture is straight and his gaze is keen. He looks at me tentatively as he approaches my desk, and I can tell he’s just the slightest bit on edge. “Your Highness,” he says uncertainly. “Alpha Leo,” I reply. “Um, what can I do for you?” Alpha Leo asks nervously. I shuffle a stack of papers on the desk together. “As I’m sure you know, we’ve suffered considerable gaps in our staff,” I begin. “Specifically in our military and guard positions. One of the most notable absences is Captain McAndrews, as I’m sure you remember quite well.” Alpha Leo blanches. “Right,” he mutters. “The work you did during Elder Jet’s invasion was exceptiona

Spencer’s POV“The Lycan Kingdom will come to your aid at once.” Clearly, the ease with which I offer my support comes as something of a shock to Alpha Fierro. His eyes widen, and his face breaks into an expression of gratitude. His posture already seems straighter, like a great weight has been lifted from his shoulders. “Really?” Alpha Fierro breathes out. “Thank you, Your Majesty. Truly, I’d nearly given up hope on receiving any sort of aid at all–I’d almost started believing the rumours…” My eyes narrow. “The rumours?” I repeat coldly.” Alpha Fierro blanches. “Well, I–of course, I never really believed them. But I’m sure it hasn’t escaped your vast reach of influence that some werewolves have been saying things about the Lycan Royal Family that have been rather… out of line. Ever since Elder Jet and his rebellion, things have been different. But I–that’s not important! What I’m trying to say to you right now is thank you, Your Majesty. From the bottom of my heart.” I remain si

  • Rescuing His Enslaved Luna Queen   Chapter 414: Symptoms

Spencer’s POV“Tell me everything you know about this plague.” The command is sharp and electric, crackling with urgency. At Alpha Fierro’s mention of this strange plague taking lives–not to mention its unfortunate coinciding with the Blood Moon–I can’t help but feel nauseous thinking about what could happen to Ivy. There’s been no confirmation that she’s sick with any sort of plague, of course, and there haven’t been any reported cases of illness from those who have come into contact with her so far. But all of that could change at any given moment, and when it comes to Ivy’s life–or the lives of anyone in my kingdom, for that matter–I have no intention of taking it lightly. Alpha Fierro hesitates for a moment. “I’ve been having my Beta send me reports tracking the symptoms he’s seen from some of the infected pack members we’ve got under observation,” he says. “But my Beta is–well.” He stops speaking abruptly, gaze momentarily taken over by sadness. “He’s deteriorating rapidly, to
