Ivy's POV

“You don’t deserve to say the word ‘friendship,’” I tell Veronica, enunciating each word carefully.

Once upon a time, when I was young and naive, I’d given my heart to Veronica with a purity and passion she’d never deserved. I really thought we were close when we were kids. I’d believed foolishly that we would be friends forever. But she betrayed me in the most brutal way possible.

“I’m sorry. I won’t mention it again,” Veronica apologizes quickly, looking away.

Her desperate expression, surprisingly, doesn’t seem the slightest bit fake. And seeing my refusal to comply with her wishes seems to have her on the verge of breaking down.

Good.

I want to see her suffer.

I want to see her suffer before I kill her.

“I promise, I have no intention of hurting you,” Veronica adds. “I swear I don’t have any ulterior motives here. I’m not… what Erick and I did to you–I–I just–can we talk? That’s it. I just want to talk.”

I don’t understand what we could possibly have to talk about

Ivy's POVErick is the one who kidnapped my father.“What?” I ask in shock, gaping at Veronica. My first thought is to assume she’s making the whole thing up. I honestly wouldn’t put it past her at this point. I know by now that Veronica can’t be trusted in the slightest. She doesn’t seem like she’s lying now, though. Her eyes don’t have that gleam they get sometimes–that joy of deception. Plus, it adds up. My mind is suddenly flooded with thoughts–Erick’s announcement today about Beta Kinney’s health, his absence during the opening statements, Veronica’s desperation as she asks me for help…Something is desperately wrong with this strange pack alliance, I can tell that much. I’m beginning to piece things together, I think. But I have no way of knowing for sure.“What’s going on?” I ask Veronica sharply. “Shortly after we got married, Erick and my father started having reoccuring arguments about pack affairs.” Veronica’s voice is heavy with pain. She lowers her gaze in sadness. “On

Ivy's POVI stare at Veronica in shock. “We once made a promise, remember?” Veronica sniffles, wiping her eyes and smiling up at me brokenly. She’s still on her knees, and even though she can’t be more than a few weeks pregnant, I find myself momentarily worrying about the baby’s safety. “We promised that when we became mothers, we’d be godmothers to each other’s children. You and me, Ivy. We were supposed to be in this together.”Veronica’s voice is filled with sincerity, making my heart ache, but I can’t bring myself to trust her just yet. Of course I remember that promise. I’d believe in it when we made it, too. It’s because Veronica’s friendship was so dear to me that I can’t forgive her betrayal. “Once the Thunderclaw pack takes over the Obsidian pack, I’ll have no value to Erick anymore,” Veronica continues, whimpering. “Both packs will be in his name. He won’t need me for anything else. He’ll discard both me and my baby!”Discard. I know that pain all too well–I’d been disca

Ivy's POVI’m on my way out of the pack house when I see Erick hovering by the doorway. My heart plummets, and I suddenly feel myself filled with panic at the sight of him. I lower my head and avert my gaze, trying to walk past him quickly so he has no idea I’m here. I have no intention whatsoever of talking to him–unless the words I’m speaking are the last words he’ll ever hear. Just as I’m about to pass him by, though, I feel the barest brush of fingertips on my shoulders. Mood Goddess, save me.“You look beautiful today, Ivy,” Erick says in that casually flippant tone of his as he leers at me, looking me up and down with a gaze that makes my skin crawl. I purse my lips and do my best not to dignify him with a response. I don’t want to engage with him. By the look in his eyes, though, he’s eager to keep engaging with me, and I can already feel the awkward sting of whatever horrible pickup line he has locked and loaded. Just as Erick opens his mouth to speak again, though, Veron

Ivy's POVHow am I supposed to thank him?I have to admit, I’ve got absolutely no frame of reference for what an appropriate form of repayment would be. Maybe, if my life was anything like it was before, I’d know what to do. I’d make him a lavish meal, or give him a hug, or go on a walk with him. That’s what I used to do for my father anytime he did something nice for me. But this situation is entirely different from that. And the way Spencer is looking at me now–There’s a bareness to his gaze, an intensity. A hunger, maybe. A sense of possession. He wants something else entirely from me. So how should I repay him?“You know what I want, Ivy,” Prince Spencer says in a low, sultry voice that moves across my skin like silk. “Show me how clever you are.”“I–I–” I scowl in annoyance at my own tied tongue. I always seem to stutter around Spencer, to my immense frustration. There’s something about him, his power, his dominance. It always trips me up. I have no idea how I’m supposed to a

Spencer's POV‘Your Highness,’ Beta Wilson’s voice echoes in my mind, accepting my mind-link.I shuffle together some of the papers on my desk, looking them over absently. Reports from other packs, mindless paperwork I wish I didn’t have to deal with. ‘Have you found Alpha Kinney?’As Ivy had mentioned earlier, the merger of two packs is a significant event–especially if one pack is being so thoroughly absorbed as the Obsidian pack seems to have been. Everything I know about Ivy’s fall from grace only made the whole affair seem even more suspicious. And so, when I’d received Erick’s invitation, I’d immediately ordered Beta Wilson to investigate the Thunderclaw pack and its affairs. I knew everything there was to know before Ivy even rushed into my office earlier today. We still haven’t found any trace of Alpha Kinney, though. Silence stretches over the mind-link, and I get the feeling that Beta Wilson is doing one last desperate grab for information before reporting to me. I doubt he

Spencer's POV“Your Highness, Veronica wants to see you.”I look up in shock at Beta Wilson, who’s currently lingering in the doorway of my office, shifting his weight nervously from foot to foot. Why would Veronica want to see me? Considering everything that’s happened between her and Ivy, she should be utterly terrified of me. “Tell her I have no reason to see her,” I commanded. I already know what I need to know from Ivy–there’s no need for me to meet Veronica right now. Moreover, if Erick discovered I was meeting with her, he might realize I know about his crimes.Plus, knowing what Veronica has done to Ivy, I don’t think I could trust myself to be civil with her. Beta Wilson nods respectfully, then turns on his heel and leaves my office. I follow him down the hallway to his room, where–as we’d arranged–the Thunderclaw warrior has been imprisoned. We managed the whole situation discreetly, of course, taking him captive late last night under the cover of darkness so Alpha Erick

Ivy's POVI’m already a bundle of nerves by the time Spencer walks out of the room, expression grim.“How did it go?” I ask urgently, wringing my hands. “Did he say anything? Do we know where Kinney is?”Spencer nods once.“Where’s Beta Kinney?” I press. “That’s confidential information for now,” Spencer replied calmly, seemingly unfazed by my panicked frenzy. He gestures towards Beta Wilson. “My Beta will find him.”I huff in frustration, but faced with his infuriating calmness, I have no idea how to voice my feelings. This isn’t just about revenge, or finding Beta Kinney–it’s about the very survival of the Obsidian pack, of my father’s legacy. If we can find Beta Kinney, we have at least some chance of saving my former pack from being absorbed. “Don’t worry,” Spencer reassures me as though he’s read my mind. “You’ll be able to see him as soon as we find him.”“Can I come with you on the mission?” I ask, concerned.Spencer blinks, and it takes me a moment to realize I’ve caught him

Ivy's POVThe tunnel underneath the floorboards is darker than anything I’ve ever known. I follow Spencer and Beta Wilson down the stairs, keeping one hand against the wall so I don’t lose track of where I am. The stairs are steep, and the stone they’re made of is crudely carved and rough. We spend maybe fifteen minutes descending in dreary silence, until suddenly Beta Wilson and Spencer stop. I hear the faint noise of something being pried from the wall, then the soft click of a lighter, and suddenly, the world is illuminated in orange torchlight. “Oh!” I gasp, looking around in shock. We’re in a small cave with water-worn walls carved from black stone. The ground is damp, small streams of water running across the rock, and multiple tunnels seem to be branching off this main circular room. Only one of the tunnels has additional unlit torches lining its walls, though. “This way,” Beta Wilson says. Even though his voice is nothing but a hushed whisper, the cave seems to pick up on

Spencer’s POV“Tell me everything you know about this plague.” The command is sharp and electric, crackling with urgency. At Alpha Fierro’s mention of this strange plague taking lives–not to mention its unfortunate coinciding with the Blood Moon–I can’t help but feel nauseous thinking about what could happen to Ivy. There’s been no confirmation that she’s sick with any sort of plague, of course, and there haven’t been any reported cases of illness from those who have come into contact with her so far. But all of that could change at any given moment, and when it comes to Ivy’s life–or the lives of anyone in my kingdom, for that matter–I have no intention of taking it lightly. Alpha Fierro hesitates for a moment. “I’ve been having my Beta send me reports tracking the symptoms he’s seen from some of the infected pack members we’ve got under observation,” he says. “But my Beta is–well.” He stops speaking abruptly, gaze momentarily taken over by sadness. “He’s deteriorating rapidly, to

Spencer’s POVAs I tear my way through the hospital and back towards the place, a million thoughts are racing through my mind. “Where’s he been staying since I turned him away?” I ask Beta Wilson, moving as quickly as I can. The day of my wedding, he’d somehow managed to fistfight his way past all my staff and slip past the wedding chaos to my penthouse. He’d knocked on my door like a madman before pleading with me to take his meeting–the only reason I even did was because I hold a fair amount of respect for the Sunclash pack. But the man had been blabbering on and on about some sort of curse rained down from hell that had overtaken his punishment, and he’d seemed all but mad, and I’d had a million other things on my mind since. “He’s been staying in a hotel within the kingdom for the past week,” Beta Wilson replies. “I’ve done my best to reach out to him over the past couple days, but he’s remained adamant that he only wanted to speak with you. At first I thought it best not to le

Spencer’s POV“No matter what happens to me, swear you’ll always take care of Tala.” Something in the solemnity of Ivy’s words jolts me right back to reality. Immediately, I realize just how unstable I’m acting–threatening the very doctors and nurses who are trying to save Ivy couldn’t be a more impractical use of my time, and it’s certainly not the kind of support Ivy needs right now. What’s happening to her would be terrifying enough even without all the uncertainty–my own overreaction certainly isn’t something she needs to be worrying about right now. Above all else, she needs to know I’m there for her. “Oh, Ivy, of course I’ll always take care of Tala,” I tell her gently. “You don’t need to worry about that at all. She’s my daughter, and I love her. I swear I’ll do everything in my power to make sure she never has a care in the world. Jason, too–I want him to be my son as well. I know I haven’t always been as reliable as you’ve needed me to be in the past, but I’ll always be he

Ivy’s POV“That is unacceptable!” At the roar of Spencer’s voice, the ferocity of his tone and the growl rumbling in his throat, the nurses and Doctor Danbury both back away in fear as they look up at him with wide, horrified eyes. I’m not even the designated target of Spencer’s ire–hell, I’m the person he’s doing everything possible to protect–but I still feel an instinctive shiver of panic run through me at the sound of such evident threat and disapproval. I can feel Spencer’s Lycan Aura, only more powerful now that he’s king, just on the precipice of being unleashed. It crackles through the air red hot and electric as he continues skewering the doctor and the nurses with his severe gaze. “Spencer,” I try to say, reaching out and grabbing his hand. Another cough hits me, though, and I’m hacking and wheezing as I try to speak. “Spencer, please, it’s not their fault–” “Their job is to heal!” Spencer protests. He turns to look at me, and much to my surprise, I can see the tears spr

  • Rescuing His Enslaved Luna Queen   Chapter 410: Unexplainable

Spencer’s POVThe more time Ivy and I spend in the hospital, the more the days begin to blur. When Ivy is deemed stable enough to move out of the delivery room, we’re quickly moved to a much nicer room in the hospital, and it’s a brief respite from the monotony that’s overtaken our days. I’m able to move most of my work from the palace to the hospital, though I do go back every so often to transfer files or spend some time with Tala. “It’s just a postpartum fever,” Doctor Danbury assured us initially, looking over her files with a wrinkled brow. “Queen Ivy, I know you’re feeling sensations right now unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before, but I promise it’s all a fairly natural–albeit unpleasant–aspect of the postpartum healing process. We’ve got you constantly monitored now. Just do your best to keep eating and drinking. The best you can do is build back your strength.” “Yes, Doctor,” Ivy said demurely. But as we exchanged dissatisfied glances, I could tell neither one of

  • Rescuing His Enslaved Luna Queen   Chapter 409: Feverish

Ivy’s POVAs I watch the former Lycan Queen hold my daughter, a strange sensation suddenly overtakes me. I let out a sharp gasp, grasping for Spencer’s hand immediately. I try to cling to it, but my grip is already beginning to slacken. Tiny black and white specks flash across my face like static. I can hear a faint ringing in my ears, a piercingly shrill whistle that feels like an ever-growing pressure just behind my eyes. Goosebumps ripple across my skin, and all the residual pain I’ve felt from childbirth suddenly seems to intensify. But more than anything else, I feel like I’m on fire. It’s as though hot coals have been set ablaze just underneath my skin, like I’m crisping up and sweltering in the overwhelming heat. I groan, doubling over in pain as the heat persists. “Ivy?” Spencer asks urgently, immediately doing his best to prop me up. I keep slackening against his grasp, though. “Ivy, what’s wrong?” I do my best to form words, but it’s as though my tongue is suddenly inca

  • Rescuing His Enslaved Luna Queen   Chapter 408: Celebration

Spencer’s POVAs I look down at my daughter, a love unlike anything I’ve ever felt before flows through me. It’s not different in its magnitude, but rather in its softness, its sweetness. The overwhelming sense of protectiveness that overtakes me. My young daughter, my beautiful Tala. I want to take care of her day in and day out. To provide for everything she may need. To be there for her as long as I possibly can. Her soft, squishy cheeks, her pudgy fists grasping at nothing, the wisps of curly hair still plastered to her head…“Could I hold her, please?” I ask Ivy quietly. She beams up at me. “Of course!” I take a seat beside her in the hospital bed, careful not to jostle her or Tala too much as I do. The moment I’m seated comfortably, Ivy slowly places the little bundle of joy into my arms, and my heart feels like it’s about to overflow with all the love I’m feeling. “Oh,” I whisper softly, tears forming in the corners of my eyes. I smile gently at Tala, brushing one finger ag

Spencer’s POV“So is the baby okay?” I ask the question frantically, watching both Ivy and the infant in fear that something could go wrong at any instant. The image laid out before me is peaceful–Ivy is cradling our child in both arms, rocking her back and forth and humming and whispering sweet nothings against her baby curls. Most of the blood has been wiped from the infant’s pudgy body, and she’s sleeping now, all curled up in her fuzzy pink blanket. But I can’t shake the lingering feeling that something is terribly, horribly wrong. Doctor Danbury shrugs. “Honestly, if I didn’t know she was about twenty-eight weeks early, I wouldn’t have known,” she replies. “Her vitals are healthy, her breathing is good, she’s an appropriate weight and size… this was pretty much the ideal scenario for childbirth, save for the fact that it happened directly after your wedding. I can’t promise anything going forward, but right now, you have a perfectly healthy baby girl.” “But how did this… happ

Ivy’s POV“I can’t do this!” The exclamation tears through the room in a shrill burst of agony and desperation, but all the nurses just look at one another like it’s something they’ve heard a million times before from other birthing mothers. My body feels like it’s falling apart as a pain unlike any other continues to flow through me in waves. I scream over and over again, grabbing at the bedsheets and Spencer’s hands and the soft fluff of the mattress and just about anything at all I could theoretically use to find purchase. I feel like I'm floating through the universe in a sea of endless pain, and if I don’t find something to tether me quickly, I’ll find myself adrift for good. “You’re doing great,” Doctor Danbury assures me. Though she’s firmly focused on whatever’s happening between my legs, she makes a gesture towards me with one hand, and a nurse immediately comes to my bedside with a stack of dampened towels. “Just keep pushing, just keep breathing, and I promise all of thi
