Thalia dropped her head on the table, her head swarming with thoughts of disappearing. But where would she go?
Moments like this made her feel lonely because she truly didn't have anyone in the whole wide world; friends, relatives, or even close acquaintances. No one.
Maybe something was wrong with her.
Something under the table caught Thalia's eye under the table. She bent and picked it up slowly, examining it. It was a black ancient-looking book.
How didn't she see it before?
She examined it. Its worn leather cover showed the test of time, revealing faint traces of intricate inscriptions that seemed to pulse with an otherworldly glow. For some reason, Thalia's heartbeat sped up in excitement. She traced the inscriptions on the book with her fingers. They were etched in silver and gold, and they formed a mesmerizing tapestry of arcane symbols.
The book felt like it held magic. It made her feel powerful even though she hadn't opened it yet. Thalia felt like she'd found a hidden treasure or something of the sort. The thought made her chuckle. She wasn't on the sea digging for any treasure, she just picked up a book at a restaurant.
She studied the book for a while, both drawn, entranced, and worried at the same time.
Thalia finally opened the front page. She had to squint to read what was written on the front page.
"In the realm of time travel, the past is but a treasure chest of lessons, the future an untamed wilderness of possibilities, and the present the delicate thread that weaves them together. Travel wisely, for in the tapestry of time, our choices shape not only our destiny but the very fabric of existence."
The quotes gave Thalia chills. She flipped to the second page where something was also written.
"Memories from a realm you do not belong to are not yours. Every adventure you seek in the new world won't be in your possession once you go back to your world."
Did this mean if time travel existed and that if she took part in it, she wouldn't remember anything from the new world? Like she would lose her memories? Thalia doubted it. She flipped through the book, inspecting it more cautiously. She wasn't exactly a superstitious person in any way, so there was no way all this was real.
Shrugging her shoulders, she searched for a pen in her bag and recited the popular saying under her breath, "There's no harm in trying…"
When she held her pen and opened the first blank page of the book, she paused.
What date would she write?
History was the subject she failed the most in high school, so she didn't know any particular event or time she would like to travel to. The only country Thalia had ever learned about or been obsessed with was the tropical island nation, Rivenland. It was the only class she'd paid attention to because its history captured her, so she knew its history by heart.
It didn't matter anyway, because it wasn't going to work.
Or would it?
An idea came into her mind. She'd been reading a hardcover historical romance recently, so she searched her bag for the book.
Thalia's bag always contained everything she needed at any moment, and her mom used to call her a handy person because of it. Even as a child, she carried around things like scissors, tissue and stick-on notes, which made her the go-to person for people who needed to borrow things.
She finally found the book after rummaging in her large tote bag for so long. She opened the first page. Alas! Conveniently, the first word was a year.
1780
So she made her decision and wrote the year down on the first line of the book.
Nothing happened.
Thalia sighed, put the book away, and put everything back inside her big tote bag. Although it was false, the book was nevertheless attractive and went well with the rest of her collection.
She stood to leave the restaurant and suddenly she felt a tingle at the back of her ears, which made her pause in her tracks. She scratched it a bit and continued to walk.
It continued to itch her as she went to the counter to pay, but she tried not to scratch it anymore to avoid sores. After settling her bill, she turned to leave and waved at the table where the little girl was still sitting with her family. The little girl waved back. And as Thalia always does, she pulled the door when 'push' was printed in black ink on a white paper. After struggling with the door a little, she succeeded and stepped out of the restaurant.
It was still drizzling a bit, but it was bearable. After all, Thalia loved the rain. She loved to get drenched and play in the rain. She only pretended to not like it because it wasn't socially acceptable to not avoid rain or to go around looking like a drenched rat. Her favourite memory with her mom was playing in the rain in her favourite rain boots after school. Her mom also loved the rain, just like her. Her mom loved life in its entirety.
And it was taken away from her so horribly.
Thinking about a good memory of her mom made her smile, but it also made her tear up as well. She hadn't walked far from the restaurant before she felt the tingle behind her ears again and her body got hot. Extremely hot.
Her vision went dark for a moment, then something like a tunnel opened in front of her. It looked like a portal of some sort, but she couldn't see what was on the other side. Thalia was in awe at what she was seeing. What the hell was going on?
She looked around to see if anyone else noticed what was going on. Instead, people just passed by like there wasn't a huge portal open near them. As the portal swirled open in front of her, Thalia hesitated. She had always dreamt of time travel, but now that the moment was here, she couldn't help but feel a pang of fear. What if something went wrong? What if she couldn't find her way back to her own time?
Did she even want to?
Did she even want to stay in 2019?Nothing mattered anyway. Right now, she would do anything to not be stuck in the same place as her uncle. Her mortal enemy.Without looking back, Anna stepped into the portal. For a moment, everything went black, and she felt like she was falling through space. She entered a dream-like condition, and she felt herself slip in and out of consciousness. When she opened her eyes, which she had shut tightly out of fear, she saw that she was floating somewhere that felt and looked like it was a realm between life and death. It was beautiful. A silent purple lightning strike designed the place. Thick smoke covered some areas and there were no signs of any living things. She tried standing from her awkward floating position, and it worked. So she started to walk around slowly and cautiously. Suddenly, a passage appeared in front of her. She hadn't seen it before because the smoke altered her sight a little.Thalia gasped. The door was beautiful! It was craf
The servants bowed as Prince Aldric walked into The Great Hall, Darian right behind him as always. Darian was his secretary, confidant, personal assistant, and his friend. Aldric didn't have many people around him. When you are someone in a powerful position as he was, thousands could surround you and you could have only one person who truly supports you.Darian was that for him, a reliable shoulder to lean on.He had a stressful day, and it was about to end terribly as well. The note Darian passed to him while he was attending to the ministers in the royal court weighed on his mind and they hadn't gotten a chance to talk privately since then, which put him on the edge. He was tempted to ask Darian about it immediately, but he just walked towards the dining table. It was a conversation they needed to have in secret. The Great Hall was where the Royal family had their dinner, and he was eating alone once again. Princess Yara, his beloved younger sister, had travelled once again to visi
Thalia's heartbeat raced, nearly exploding. She held her breath and searched for a good hiding spot as the voice drew closer. She heard another voice. This one was lighter and sounded a bit huskier than the other one. Two people. Two men. She knew how terrible it would look if they were to find her. A strange woman in their bedroom. How would she explain herself? She paused her train of thought as she spotted a closet. The closet looked large enough to contain about 20 people; it was practically a room at that point. She slipped into the closet and closed the door slowly just as the other door opened and she heard footsteps and voices. Thalia held her breath and hugged herself tightly, staying still in a squatting position. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead and trickled down her face. She tried her best to decipher what they were talking about but she could only hear bit and pieces of their conversation and a few words she heard made her panic more. Assassination. Anarchi
"Who is this?" Thalia's chest echoed with the thunderous beats of her heart. For some reason, she'd been more comfortable with the presence of the first guy she met whom she now recognized as the prince. From his robes and outfit alone and also with how regal he looked, she could tell he was royalty. While the other guy looked good, too, he scared her for some reason. In the dimly lit chamber, the air was thick with tension between the three of them. "Your Highness, who is this?" The guy who just came in asked again as he stared at her with bewilderment and caution. "I don't know," The Man who was called Your Highness said, "She was hiding in my closet when I came in." he moved towards the second guy while speaking and now Thalia was facing both of them. She felt trapped, like a fly in a spider's web. "Guards!" the guy who had just entered yelled, and her heart plummeted in response. Maybe she was in more trouble than she thought. "Your Highness, step away from her. She mig
3 days. Thalia had been locked up for three days now. Things were starting to look really serious and she was starting to panic more than before. Talking to Lily made her not lose her mind though, it kept her sane, which she was grateful for. The bread they served that morning and yesterday in the prison wasn't bad so Thalia had eaten some of it. Now she was just staring at a spot on the wall while sitting next to Lily who was doing the same.Suddenly, the creaking sound of heavy footsteps approached, and the clanging of keys grew louder. The cell door swung open, revealing a grizzled prison guard. The guard looked at both her and Lily, then redirected his stare to Thalia, "Hey.. you," he gestured gruffly to her with a careless flick of his hand, "Stand up and follow me." She wanted to ask why but the guard didn't look like a person that had the patience to answer her questions. He looked bored and straightforward.Thalia mustered her strength and stood up, her heart pounding in h
Thalia woke to someone knocking on the door. It was interfering with her precious sleep and it honestly was the best sleep she'd had in ages. Sitting up in bed and stretching her arms deliciously, Thalia stared in the direction of the door. But she found herself looking at a wall. A blank light yellow wall. Wait. The door was meant to be there. With a jolt out of the bed, all of Thalia's memories of the past few days came back in a flash. The letter, the little girl, the magical book, time travel and the prince. The person behind was knocking continuously and when her still delirious brain recognized that she wasn't in her small rental apartment and that she could be in danger, she felt a trickle of fear.Who could it be? Was it the guards? Have they come to arrest her again? While she was being released she had a a thought simmering at the back of her mind that beheading still existed in this era and it was meted out for crimes against royalty and crimes that concerned being
Thalia was sure she could hear her own heartbeat as Ann led her through a dimly lit corridor. She was on her way to meet the prince. To have dinner with the prince. Despite how the situation was definitely not in favour of her, and how she probably had a lot of things to worry about, her head was filled only with thoughts of the prince. Oh, good grief! Thalia gasped inwardly as her imaginations went too far and she quickly shut them off. She had to focus on making it out of the meeting with her head on her shoulders. And security of her head being on her shoulders for a long time. There was a big door at the end of the corridor and a few guards standing in front wearing their normal stoic expressions. Ann paused in front of the large door, "This is The Great Hall, where you'll be dining with the prince." She gestured towards the door then turned to the guards and gave them a signal to open the door. When they opened it, Thalia was met with a lot of inquisitive stares from people wh
“Who are you?” The prince asked again. He was itching to know who this woman he felt so much attraction to was. There were no traces of her in any records. It was like she dropped from the sky. Maybe she did.She looked like an angel. Aldric's eyes flickered once again to the black dress hugging her body. The moment he entered the hall and saw the dress, he wanted to take it off of her. The thought had surprised him because he was hardly ever interested in women in that way, and now they were seated in close proximity and talking, the dirty thought still lingered. It was made for her. “As you said before, I seem harmless,” She replied in a sultry voice that made him want to take her lips in his. “That I am.” "Then?" Prince Aldric raised a brow in question or as a signal for her to continue.“I know this will sound crazy but I’m from the future.” She said lowering her eyes.Prince Aldric was a bit taken aback by her answer but that was the only answer that made sense. It sounded no
Everything was still a bit surreal to Thalia. She was in another dimension, a dimension where kings, queens, princesses and real royal families still existed. She just had dinner with a real Prince who gave her butterflies, and the said Prince insisted on walking her to her room after their dinner. Wow! The whole situation was crazy. And it just popped up in Thalia's mind. How truly batshit crazy and lunatic she'd sound if she tried to explain this situation to someone from her time? ‘So, I travelled back in time to Rivenland, and the moment I stepped foot there, I was immediately imprisoned for unlawfully entering the prince's room. After spending a few nights in prison, they upgraded me to a room that resembled a princess's quarters and assigned me a maid. I lived in the palace, wore century-old dresses and had meals with the crown prince and he even walked me to my room after one of our meals. Oh, and we played the truth game too.’ Thalia chuckled at the silly dialogue she was c
"How about we play a game instead?" Thalia suggested after a few seconds of suddenly forgetting everything about herself. Now that she was asked to talk about herself, nothing seemed to come up. "A game?" Prince Aldric asked. "Yes, I think a game would make it easier for me and you too, to talk about ourselves," she explained."Okay that's a great idea," The prince said, wearing that boyish smile that never failed to make her tummy dance."It's called the truth or dare game," she started. "Interesting…" he raised a deliciously thick, perfect eyebrow at the name."But we'll focus only on the truth because you want to know more about me and frankly I also want to know more about you." Thalia wondered where she got all the courage from. This was a prince she was talking to, a prince who would be crowned King soon. They were from two separate worlds both literally and by their status. "If it's a game, shouldn't there be a winner? And prizes too?" He asked and plopped a grape into his
They both sat at the table for a while without saying anything, they just stared. This time though she was sitting opposite him on a smaller table in the dining room, which she hadn't spotted before. This smaller table made them sit closer to each other. Prince Aldric had sent out all the servants a few seconds before. As excited as Thalia was to spend time alone with him in the huge dining room, she was also very nervous and it manifested in her tapping her legs, and wringing her palms together. Earlier after she arrived, the workers started to set out the food. There were so many different types of dishes and she wouldn't lie, Prince Aldric wasn't the only reason she was almost salivating. There were even dishes she had never seen before. 'Wow, is this how royals eat?' she thought. The prince had arrived first. That fact had horrified Ann and in turn she rushed to get Thalia ready, muttering something nervously. Thalia was sure she heard something about how you never made a prince
"Have dinner with me tonight?'It was strange how sound could send shivers running up and down her spine. How just a simple touch could make all her senses rejoice. Her senses vibrated and pulsed happily at his touch and her toes were wiggling inside her boots from glee at that little touch.Maybe she was touch starved.Thalia was struggling to regulate her breathing, all she could focus on was his hands on her bare skin and how she wanted him to go lower. Or bring his face closer…As soon as he'd caught her from falling, and placed his big hands on her bare back, everything else around them melted away. Everyone else too. She could only focus on his intense gaze and warm palm. His eyes had darkened at that moment and beautifully matched the greenery around them, and she was lost in them. "Have dinner with me," he'd murmured and she so desperately wanted to say yes immediately but her voice was stuck in her throat. She was busy admiring his flawless face which looked even more surrea
The next morning, Thalia was up early and ready to finally go outside. Ann had kindly informed her that she was free to request the things she needed as per the Prince's order. Whenever she met the prince again, she planned to ask him why she got such special treatment. He must have a reason. So she had conveniently asked Ann to bring some comfortable clothes for her since hers weren't too appropriate over here. So now she was staring at herself in the mirror noticing how well she fit the image of an 18th century woman because of the dress.According to Ann, it was the simplest she could find in the shops. It was a normal dress she'd probably see in a museum in the 21st century. It was an open robe with a petticoat. It had a fitted bodice, narrow sleeves, and double-layered cuffs. The thing Thalia found uncomfortable about the dress wasn't even the bodice. It was the fact that her boobs were almost touching her chin. With how high the dress pushed her boobs up, she could lick the to
Thalia looked at the shiny gold entrance plaque with wonder in her eyes. It gleamed in the sunlight seeping through her curtains. She admired the smooth surface and intricate designs while also not knowing how to feel. She suspected now that Prince Aldric also felt the spark and constant sexual tension between them, and now with him giving her something like that, she was sure he cared about her in some way.Maybe she was getting ahead of herself.Maybe he didn't care about her and this entrance plaque was fake. Maybe it was a test to see what she would use it for. Then she would never use it, she decided. Waiting till he summoned her wasn't a bad idea. She also needed time to kill all the butterflies in her tummy. They were too many and too active around the man.A knock interrupted Thalia's crazy thoughts. She knew immediately that it was Ann. Only she did it in such a slow, spaced, and quiet way. Thalia still confirmed through the peephole before unlocking the door, she wasn't ta
"If I'm going to stay in the palace I want to at least have my freedom," Thalia blurted. Maybe she wanted to reduce the sexual tension between them and in the room. He had already put his huge coat on her and they were once again in a staring competition. A competition she knew wouldn't end well if they continued. It was likely to end in a makeout session, initiated by her."Why so suddenly?" He asked."Why not?" She shot back, still trying to control her breathing. "Who would choose to be locked up? I want to at least try to regain my freedom.""Fair," he agreed, his eyes trained on her lips."I was only a few minutes to either a violent mental breakdown or going berserk from doing nothing and battling with boredom." She told him. Thalia was confused as to why she always became so talkative around the prince. Maybe she felt comfortable with him in a way, which was weird. He chuckled and Thalia squirmed trying to contain the butterflies wreaking havoc in her stomach. Even his laughin
Saying she was caught off guard by the prince was an understatement. Her eyes slamming on his beautiful face was more exhilarating than the shock she got from him pulling her in so suddenly. His next words snapped her out of her shock."What're you doing wandering around? I thought I confined you to your chambers until your identity is confirmed?" "Yes… uh…" she scrambled for an excuse. He cocked his head to the side as if waiting for her excuse mockingly. His beautiful eyes trained on her turned her brain to mush and she felt helpless under his scrutiny. "I… I was bored," she blurted the first thing that came to mind. She almost facepalmed in front of him even though she was telling the truth."Hmm…" he crossed his arms and continued to scrutinize her face as if searching for the truth… or lie. Thalia's eyes trailed his arms. Through his thick suit, she could see the outline of his bulging muscles and her eyes fed on them before she snapped out of it."I really was just bored and
Several thoughts swam around Thalia's mind as she walked the Halls of the palace. The guards and Ann were escorting her to her assigned room. According to Aldric, she was to stay in the palace until further orders and under strict surveillance. How would she do that though? She was experiencing something she'd only seen in movies and read in books and she was just supposed to stay put? They passed by a huge beautiful window Thalia hadn't noticed before. Just outside the window, there was a beautiful garden with a small stream. Before she could let her eyes explore more, Ann tapped her arm and they continued walking. She took note of the place, planning to visit later. If she got the freedom.A shiver touched her spine when the last expression the Prince wore came to mind. He was looking at her in a way she couldn't even begin to describe but it made her jittery and weak. Her last lingering glance at him had surely shaken her. Now, she could stay in the palace at least for a while wi
