Shirley

I hadn’t expected what it would be like seeing Keith again, nor had I anticipated that I’d run into him so soon. However, my body seems to have a mind of its own as our gazes remain locked. My heart races, my cheeks tingle with nerves, and I feel my knees locking as I’m reluctant to move.

But I have to. Keith is waiting for me and I have nowhere to go - unless I want to go sprinting into the trees. I can’t really say that I do. Besides, even if I didn’t think our paths would be crossing this fast, I’d known that seeing him at some point would be inevitable.

Still though, I have little time to prepare myself as Keith waits for me, clearly not willing to come down the steps and cross the twenty feet between us. He wants me to come to him, and all I can do is try and quickly put a brave face on as I do.

After all, Shirley doesn’t know Keith - she’s never met him. In fact, she shouldn’t be aware that this man standing on the porch even is Lockheart’s Alpha. I need to spin

Shirley Once I officially see Keith disappear, I look down at the key in my hand - the metal feeling strangely heavy within my fingers. I then turn to glance at the door, unable to help the slow breath that leaves me as I walk to it. Now that I’m able to let down my guard, I feel a little exhausted and just want to get inside. Doing just that, I put the key in the lock and let myself inside before I shut the door behind me. I’m unable to manage more than a few steps before I stop again, my mouth falling open as I study the room around me. Even despite it being only the entryway, the home is breathtaking. From the specific decorations to the delicious smell of vanilla that reaches my nose, I’m immediately obsessed with it. Abandoning my suitcase by the door, I begin to walk through the house, going from room to room. There’s a modest dining room just right of the entry and a cozy living room to the left. As I walk into the second space, I already know I’ll be spending a lot of

Shirley So I smile, a real smile as I feel warmth dance through my middle. And then I nod. “Of course.” I’ve come to Keith’s for a meeting and now find myself right in the midst of his inner circle as I stand just inside the doorway as I’ve just arrived. There’s at least ten other wolves filling the room - all of them men aside from Lily. I see her standing off to the side, unaware of my presence as she talks to a wolf I don’t recognize. In fact, there’s few faces I have seen before besides one man’s whose name I don’t know and Ron. Thankfully, Ralph doesn’t seem to be here, which saves me some face. However, as I continue to quietly scan the room, Ralph isn’t really my concern, especially as my gaze eventually lands on a particular man. Keith stands beside his desk, not saying anything as he wears a slight smile in response to the man talking his ear off. He looks so different from the way I’d seen him the day before and it makes me incapable of looking away. But after a fe

Keith As soon as he heard the front door close, confirming that Shirley had left, Keith sat back down in his chair. Swiftly, he ran a hand over his face, wiping away a lingering layer of irritation before he tore his hand away again. However, even despite his actions, he couldn’t rid himself of the thought that there’s something not quite right. Something was off with Shirley and even Chaos seemed to agree. The wolf kept making his own opinions clear - insisting that he found the woman strange, though familiar somehow. Which was only fueling the suspicions that kept swirling around Keith’s head. Shirley kept claiming that Anya was her sister and seemed to have the perfect answer to every one of his questions. But Keith couldn’t help but think that was because Shirley was Anya. They were too strikingly similar for him to easily shake the feeling. Then again, they also had their differences. It was in their speech patterns, clothes, and the way they carried themselves. Anya had b

Shirley To say the last few days have been hectic would be an understatement. With all of the protests going on around the town and the inner circle having to deal with the backlash, we’ve all been under a great deal of stress. I’ve been trying to help however I can, but there have been obvious setbacks in our timeline due to the uproar. And since Keith has to investigate the activity, we haven’t had any meetings - leaving me to mainly work on my own. I don’t mind it really. I’m used to sitting behind a computer, handling tasks on hours on end by myself. However, there seems to be a weight hanging over me each time I think of Keith or his friends out on the streets trying to keep the peace. It makes me wish I could do more, but I’m not sure it’s my place. Finishing up my work for the day, I lean away from my computer as I rush out a breath, my gaze sliding over the quiet interior of the house. Even with today’s responsibilities done, I still feel an aching strain lingering over m

Shirley My shock from Ralph’s words hasn’t worn off. As expected, I had a fitful night’s rest as I tossed and turned, seeing his sneering face clear as day each time I closed my eyes. Only, even when I climbed out of the bed this morning, Ralph still overtook my thoughts. It’s not just about his cruel expression - it’s about the distaste he expressed over Anya. I still don’t understand what caused the shift as my charm should still hold. He should be going crazy over the fact that Anya is gone - and technically he is, but not for the right reasons. Ralph should be reflecting a moping lover who wants his girl back. However, his newfound reaction suggests he would rather harm Anya rather than warmly welcome her if she ever returned. I’m still stewing over the whole encounter as I sit in front of my computer. I’m spending another day working at home as the pack is still dealing with the protests. Honestly, it’s a shame - not only because of the protests giving us setbacks, but becau

  • Rejected the Alpha but Dated His Beta   #Chapter 37 - Empty Threats

Shirley I don’t know how long I’ve been standing there - it could be seconds or maybe even hours. Then again, it almost feels like time stops and the world melts away. Once again, I don’t understand. How can Ralph seem so malicious toward Anya? Toward me? With only half my wits, I try to check in with Cicy, but she’s practically unresponsive as she rests within me. Her recent tired nature only adds to my confusion, causing my eyes to remain fogged as they stay on the door Ralph just slipped through. Empty threats, I try to tell myself. They’re all just empty threats. Maybe Ralph thinks that by trying to intimidate me that I’ll fold and start desperately trying to reach Anya, that I can get her to come back. It’s the only thing that seems semi-logical. I can’t see how any other explanation could possibly make any sense. I’m still thinking over the whole ordeal, eyes pinned to the door when I feel a strange sense of comfort come over me - which doesn’t make sense to me. Was my

Shirley It’s not Alana I call that night, but Jean. Back on our usual schedule, I do my check-in right at nine o’clock, but make sure to dance around the subject of Ralph. But this time, I do mention Keith. “He seemed happy with my work,” I inform her, finding myself smiling. “He even told me as much. Which is a huge deal because he could refer me to other major clients. Could you imagine?” “That’s awesome, Shirley!” Jean says happily, sounds of her washing dishes filling the background. “I’m not surprised, though. You don’t need his approval to know how amazing you are at your work.” “I know,” I reply, shrugging as I tug the blanket on my lap higher. “But it’s still nice to hear someone say nice things. Words of validation and all that.” “I get it,” Jean reassures me. “So does that mean you’ll be coming home soon?” And there it is - Jean’s roundabout way of attempting to make sure I get the hell out of the Lock Heart pack as soon as possible. I know her worries are warranted,

  • Rejected the Alpha but Dated His Beta   #Chapter 39 - Ralph’s Strange Friend

Shirley Another day, another work session spent alone at home. Some of Keith’s team have responded with some comments, so I’ve spent the morning sending out replies and editing my work. It’s easy enough, though Sam - one of the older wolves - won’t stop coming back with more and more questions. I guess I should be thankful for his interest, at least that’s what I tell myself as I sit back, sighing as his reply appears in my inbox again. Due to hours of relentless work, even my laptop is tired as it flashes a low battery warning at me. Promptly, I bend down to look through it, pushing around other items in order to find it along the mess. However, due to the limited contents, I quickly discover that it’s not there. Wondering if I had taken it out when I was still lost in my thoughts the day before, I go into the living room to see if I had absentmindedly brought it in there. But when I discover nothing, I then search in the dining room, kitchen, bedroom, and even the bathroom. W

But first, I need to get Keith released.I called the police department following my conversation with the King. He’d been right - Keith’s bail was absurdly high and would need to be paid immediately. We need to clear Keith’s name.”Arthur continues to blink at me, as if he still hasn’t grasped what’s going on. But we need to act fast.“Ruth,” I say next, looking toward the woma

ShirleyKeith holds my hand, keeping me close as we walk through the Lock Heart airport. Looking at our intertwined fingers keeps a smile on my face, which can’t be smoothed even as people stare our way.“Who is that?”“Do you see the Alpha?”They’re whispering, staring wide-eyed. Some people smile, others - mainly women - scowl at me. Apparently Keith notices too because he only squeezes my hand and brings me closer. However, it’s not in a domineering or protective manner. Instead, he holds his head high, seemingly proud and happy to have me at his side.I have to admit I like it - I like this. Finally being able to touch him and look at him however and whenever I want is like a personal gift from the Goddess. It certainly felt like a gift yesterday when we’d made the most of my final moments in my room - we’d locked ourselves in there all day. But eventually, I had to go meet with my counselor, let her know that I wasn’t going to finish the semester and that I’m withdrawing.Since t

ShirleyA silent breath brushes through my lips, making my shoulders fall an inch as I swallow Keith’s declaration.I just want you. Four simple words and yet it feels like my world has been shaken. Deep down, maybe I already knew, but it’s different hearing him say it aloud.“Want me…” is the only thing I can murmur once my lips choose to move. And in turn, Keith silently nods, waiting for me to say more. But I’m not sure what to say - just like I haven’t known what to think for the last week. Maybe even since the day I met Keith...I’ve never known what to think.Keith is my mate, and when I look back at everything that has happened…I’m still so drawn in. But that doesn’t mean I’m not afraid. And because I only want the truth to be spoken between Keith and me, I tell him.“I’m afraid,” I say aloud, quietly.Again, Keith nods.“I know,” he says.He knows - because he always knows. But why else would I have run away if I wasn’t afraid? The only thing is…he may not know what exactly I

However, that hasn’t left me rejoicing in my seat as I sit on the plane - heading to my next destination.Keith doesn’t know where I’ve gone - no one does, really. I’d sent Jean a message right before I’d disconnected my phone, letting her know I needed to get away. Only, not even she knows where “away” is.Sitting on this plane, I’ve already watched miles fly by as we coast through the air. I watched the sun go down, leaving my eyes to only scan flickering lights of the cities below. And now the plane’s cabin is quiet as most passengers have fallen asleep. But I’m awake - I don’t know how I’ll ever sleep again with all the thoughts going through my head or the heaviness in my heart. The ache in my chest is horrible and I wish I could just make it go away. But it only becomes worse each time

KeithKeith’s head hurt like hell when he woke up the next morning, groggy as he tried to blink away the pain also sitting within his eyes. It was as if he was hung over, the pounding in his head only becoming worse. However, as he ran another hand through his hair, alarms began to ring within his head.He hadn’t been drunk - he’d been drugged.Eyes snapping open, Keith bared the pain as memories began to dance within his mind. Sitting at home, Lily coming over, realizing she’d put something in his drink, kicking her out. He could remember it all, but it’s what came after that was foggy.Keith continued to stir then, unsettled by the holes in his own story. Only, as his limbs brushed the bedding around him, he came to a new discovery. This was not his bed.Startled again, Keith sat up, fighting through discomfort as he stared down at the sheets and then up

ShirleyKeith wants me. I heard it from his very lips, felt it rumble through every inch of me being. It’s not a conclusion I made based on a look he gave or from reading between his words. He actually said it.And following his words, his teeth scrape against my neck, gently biting me. It makes me completely lose all sense, my mouth acting before my brain as I jerk and give a muffle cry.“Yes,” the word falls out of my mouth, my approval feeling as though it could shake the earth beneath my feet. But it also has Keith growing more wild.“Do you want me to fuck you here? Or the bed?” Keith asks next, sending sparks into my stomach.Yes. Neither. Both. All answers fly into my head, but only one leaves my mouth.“Bed.”Keith peels his body from mine, and I instantly miss him. But then he’s picking me up, carrying me through the office. My lips are on his neck now, burning him with kisses that make his steps stagger as he moves into my bedroom. ShirleyI’ve returned home after being out all day. I’ve been trying to come to terms with what happened last night, but I know it was just a moment of weakness caused by Cicy’s influence. However, that doesn’t explain why my powers are weakened, why my scent slipped.I wish there was a way to gain answers to what’s happening, but there’s no one I can turn to. Not even Jean as I know she’s currently busy with her new mate. For now, I have to cope as best as I can.Still feeling defeated, I walk up the front door of Keith’s home. I brace myself with every step I take, knowing that the Alpha must be home as I can see his car in the driveway. All I can hope is that our paths don’t cross again tonight.Reaching the top step, I go to slid my key in the lock, but I pause as I notice the door is already unlocked. That’s strange…normally whoever comes and goes makes sure it’s secure each time, not wanting anyone to somehow sneak in.Still puzzled, I let myself inside, making sure to lock the

KeithThe house was quiet as Keith sat in his office, drinking from a glass filled with the last of his scotch. Usually, he wouldn’t make a habit of drinking alone, but tonight the alcohol felt necessary. He felt run down in every sense of the word - though, he’d never admit it. So much had occurred over the previous weeks and it was moments like these where everything caught up to him.Only, he couldn’t ignore what captured his thoughts tonight, had his vision glazing over as he looked at nothing in particular. Instead, he was met with images of Shirley as the woman’s face took up every inch of his mind.“Stop!”The way she’d thrown out the word the previous night had struck him straight to his chest. Her voice had been so raw, anguished. And he still didn’t know what he’d done to cause it.However, that wasn’t even the oddest thing about the whole occurrence. No - Keith was still left in confusion as he remembered what else had happened during Shirley’s struggles. As she stood withi
