My eyes fly open in shock and I can feel the tension in the room almost instantly.

The two females in the room are standing at the edge of my bed, weapons in their hands, their backs to me, their stance both protective and battle ready.

There are voices coming from outside, loud, angry voices.

Voices that I recognize.

Fear strikes me and I scramble to my feet, “What is happening?”

“You have nothing to fear, Righ,” Jeznel says, tightly. “You are safe here.”

Her mantra doesn’t seem to be doing anything to quell my fears. I can hear the sounds of people shouting outside and the clash of weapons.

For some reason, I don’t believe them right now.

“How do they know where I am?” I can’t help this panicked feeling inside of me. But at the same time, I can feel my wolf ready to attack at any moment.

“They must have tracked you by the chains they held you captive with,” Veneez sounds calm but from the way she adjusts her body, it seems she’s gearing for an attack.

“Fera-”

The silent is deadly and I look up to see Damien standing in the doorway. He has the same lazy expression on his face, but his eyes, his eyes are different.I always thought that Damien had an obvious streak of cruelty in him but right now, I can see it in a way that makes my skin crawl in fear. There is something inhumane in his eyes, this lack of care for any living thing.“You should remove your hands from my woman, Latlin, or I’ll be removing your hands and those of your entire line, along with other very crucial body parts.”Latlin is frozen, “H-How? How are you here? How are you alive?”“My mate, please” Damien says, patiently. However, Latlin’s hand tightens around my neck and I gasp for air.“You – You’d better do what we tell you to,” his voice is unsteady, filled with fear, “or we’ll kill your mate!”“You’ll kill her?” Damien smiles but his eyes are flashing in a way that makes my heart nearly stop. “Y-Yes!” Latlin seems to gain some confidence when Damien doesn

“What did Fera do?” I burst out, suddenly worried about my friend.“She didn’t do anything,” Damien responds. “But she’s injured.”He picks me up as if I weigh next to nothing and then, tossing me over his shoulder like a bag of potatoes, he begins striding out the door.“Wait!” I struggle in his hold. “Put me down! I can walk!”“Be a good girl and stay,” he tells me, calmly.“Don’t treat me like a dog, Damien!” I snarl. “Put me down or I’m going to start pinching your butt!”He immediately stops in his tracks and his voice is suggestive purr, “Is that a promise?”“Pervert!” I try to kick him but he immediately let’s go.“Fine,” his voice is abrupt, his mood changing in the blink of an eye. “I don’t want you shattering my ear drums anyway.”He begins walking and I barely manage to keep up, “What happened to Fera?”“I don’t know yet. She’s being tended to.”Tended to? By whom?My question is soon answered when I round the corner and see Fera’s still body laying on the ground

The Rhoder Tribe has lost some of its senior members. I expect them to lash out at Damien but they do nothing of the sort. I also expected Damien to want to return to the castle almost immediately but he plans to wait for Fera to heal.“Aren’t you worried?” I ask him as he enters my room, two days later. “About what?”“About the state of things back home,” I put my hair up in a bun. He goes still at my words, “What did you just say?”“I said about-”“You called the castle home,” Damien studies me and I freeze.“I-” My first instinct is to make an excuse but I trust the second instinct which tells me that it is better to be honest. “It is home, isn’t it?”Damien walks towards me and then reaches out to grab the small pin that is holding my hair in the bun, and yanks it out, making my hair tumble down.“Damien!” I feel annoyed.“I like it down,” he murmurs, running his fingers through my hair before bringing a lock of hair to his lips. I’m frozen in place at his proximity,

Damien stares at me as if he can’t quite believe what I’m saying. This is hard for me as well. Acknowledging that I actually fell for Damien, another man, just barely a year after losing James. Despite knowing everything, a small part of me feels guilty. And yet, being around Damien, his touch, all of it, it feels so right, in a way that it never felt with James. And it’s time I admit that to myself. The silence between me and Damien is long and filled with unasked questions and doubts.“You sound so sure,” he finally murmurs, and there’s no sign of the sharp-tongued man I’m so accustomed to, right now.I give him a weak smile, “I was fighting with myself, with my own feelings for a while now. I was so determined to see you as the enemy that the lines of my own feelings and emotions just got blurred somewhere along the way. I wasn’t blind to how you treated me. I mean, you were, and still are, a bit of a jerk, but I cannot remember a single moment when you were not there when I n

Sometimes when one speaks, the truth comes out, a truth that one is reluctant to acknowledge.I sit by in what is a large herb garden, lost in my thoughts. All this time, I had closed my eyes to the truth. When I had learnt that Damien was the Righ’s mate and her protector, I had felt shocked and resistant to the idea. But I never really reconciled the real reasoning behind my hesitance.I run my fingers over a beautiful purple flower growing from a standing bush. Ever since that night when I exploded in front of Damien, saying things that I never thought would pour out from my heart, I’ve not seen him.But then I’ve also been actively avoiding him. This whole time I was scared of trusting him with my heart. Knowing everything that I do, there has not been a sliver of doubt within me that Damien will always protect me. Even in the worst of times, my faith in him did not waver. I knew he would come. I knew he would save me. I knew that I wasn’t alone.I know that he would paint

“I-” I’m on my feet before I can say anything, he says, “Fera needs you.”He’s talking to Caleb and the monk abandons me in a heartbeat. The traitor.I decide to leave, not ready to have this conversation, or any other. But just as I am about to pass by Damien, he grabs my arm, stopping me, “I think it’s time we talk.”I hesitate, “I don’t-”“Well, I do,” he says, simply. “Sit.”I wonder if his domineering side would ever change. Highly doubtful. Damien is a man who is used to getting what he wants. However, I am too worn out to pick a fight with him. So, I just return to my seat.Damien doesn’t take a seat, pacing for a few moments, as if trying to figure something out. His energy is all riled up. It’s strange to be able to see this darkness leaking from him now. Caleb and Fera haven’t commented on it so I don’t know whether they are able to see it.Damien’s voice distracts me from my thoughts, “Have I been harsh to you?”“What?” I stare at him.His brows are furrowed tog

Whatever I expected Damien to say, it wasn’t this.I’ve never heard such sincerity from him and it shakes me to the core. And it also makes me want to believe him. It’s not like he has a reason to lie to me.“After Sila, I just didn’t want to go through that again,” he murmurs. “Living this life, this fate is hard on me. You love, you lose, and you keep losing. It’s always been easy for me to keep the Righs, at some level of distance. I gave in with Sila and that was my mistake. I suffered for that even after she was gone. And just after a few meetings with you, it became apparent to me that it was going to be harder with you.”He runs his hands over his face, looking weary for the first time since I met him. “I didn’t think you would notice.”I simply don’t know what to say right now. There is so much confusion inside of me that I am unable to sort through my feelings right now. My heart is throbbing in pain for both of us.“I did not want to let you in, Isabel,” Damien confes

“Well, you’re right,” Caleb murmurs, sitting back in his chair. “It’s definitely a sealing spell. And a very strong one at that. Either its caster is an ancient being or just incredibly powerful. I can’t break this.”I’m immediately plagued by the memory of my brief conversation with my brother which Damien allowed. He had mentioned the curse. Had this been the curse he had been talking about or had he been talking about the curse plaguing the Righs? However, Caleb’s words catch my attention, “Why would I expect you to be able to break this spell?”“Because of who I am,” he blinks. “I should be-”“Who are you, exactly?” I finally demand, a question that has been eating at me since he saved us.Caleb looks surprised before glancing in Damien’s general direction, who very conveniently looks away.“Somebody needs to start talking,” I growl. “Now would be preferable.”“I thought you told her everything!”Damien’s silence was telling and then he scowled, “It was never necessary to b

I have never once regretted sharing my life span. Now I get to enjoy my beautiful mate for centuries to come before we move on from this world. Speaking of my mate, I hear her voice.“Junip

Mara’s anticlimactic death has me reeling. But now is not the time to worry about that. I shift into my wolf form, attacking the enemy with a ruthlessness. It’s true what the witch said. My mating bond has increased my strength. I feel lighter on my feet as I wade through the elves like they’re ants. My speed is faster, although not to the level of that of Damien’s.I can feel some of my abilities leaking through but I’ve still not been able to access my abilities. I’m a little disappointed. I thought weakening the seal would have more of an impact but aside from this soft leakage of warm sensation, there is nothing else.I feel frustrated but I can’t do anything.Damien, though.Damien is stronger than I have ever seen. He’s cutting down the elves with speed, his focus sharp. His laughter is vicious and despite that, my heart flutters in my chest at how glorious he looks. I look at him and that is my mistake. You never allow yourself to get distracted on the battlefield.A

The troops are already waiting in their battle positions when we arrive.Damien brings me with him to the battlefield. He’s wearing a suit of dark armor and I feel tense, “The Rubab Stone-”“I’ll have to be more careful,” his voice is calm. “Last time I wasn’t as aware. This time I know I am not invincible.”“Damien,” my heart is twisting in my chest. “I-”He cups my cheek, his voice gentle, “I’ll be fine, little wolf. Just don’t leave your guards.”I know he would have preferred to stash me somewhere but it’s clear that he wants me close by. After so many traitors popping up after the first battle, it only makes sense.“Don’t let anybody catch you off guard,” he thrusts a sword into my hand. “Trust your instinct when you fight. They’re going to try and separate us. Let’s make sure that, that doesn’t happen.”I give him a small smile, feeling a sliver of hope on seeing his confidence.“Okay.”I get on my toes and press a sweet kiss to his mouth. We don’t get more time togethe

“What is it?” “Something has happened in the demon realm,” he says, grimly, before looking down at my hand.I shake my head, “The pain is gone.”“Good, let’s go.”“Thank you,” I give the witch a weak smile, not knowing whether to actually be grateful or blame her for the wrong that has happened in my life. But it’s always a good idea to be graceful. She waves us off and I’m in Damien’s arms as he runs out of the cave, past the trees, towards the temple.“The portal-”“Caleb will open it when I give the signal,” he’s not even out of breath as he rushes down the temple where the shrine gates are.As we move towards the town, I grab his shoulder, “Wait! What is that?!”The sky is orange.“How long were we inside?” I mutter. “Is the sun rising?”“No,” Damien says after a long moment. “It’s fire. The town has been set on fire.”“We have to help-”But Damien holds me back, “Look.”For a moment, I don’t understand what he is saying. And then I see the arrows shooting within the

“There has to be something someone can do,” I ask, forcing my voice to stay calm, despite the roiling fear inside of me.The witch’s voice is kind now, “I’m afraid not. You’re not the first who has tried to seek a way to undo the curse.”It’s hard to keep my tears at bay. The tears are not of sadness but rather of the crippling fear of the unknown future that awaits me. At this point, I am already aware of the nature of the painful deaths a majority of the Righs faced. It was just physical pain they had to go through, that would have been fine. Horrifying as it may be, one can tolerate that to an extent. But seeing your loved ones be tortured? The mental anguish is not something I will be able to take any longer. My suffering may be different from that of the previous Righs. It may not even compare. But for me, it is enough. I am reaching my breaking point. There are so many people in my life that I now care about, so many people who can be used against me. It frightens me to th

The witch studies me, “There have been numerous prophecies recorded about the Righs over time but there was one that was recorded by a Righ who was born to a Seer and a witch. You can call it a curse or a prophecy.”I instantly remember what I saw. The memory of the battlefield. The woman who was held down, screaming. My blood turns to ice as I recall that memory. It still gives me nightmares. “The downfall of the elves. From the hands of the weakest of the Righs. And right now,” the witch looks at me, “no offence, but you are the weakest Righ there is.”I’m being hit by so many curveballs that getting my feelings hurt is at the bottom of the list right now.“It’s funny that you think I’m going to bring about the downfall of the elves when I can’t even protect myself or use my abilities.”My voice is tight with barely restrained anger.“The stars have aligned and the stars have never lied before,” the witch says, easily. “The time is drawing nearer for the final battle.”I don

I feel my knees turn weak, “What?”“But you created the seal!” Damien snaps. “You should be able to break it!”“Logically, yes,” the witch says, calmly. “But this seal is special. It draws its power through sacrifice of fate. Those spells are impossible to break.”A shutter falls over Damien’s face, “What have you done?”I look between the two feeling like I’m in the dark, “What does she mean? What do you mean by a sacrifice of fate?”The witch studies me and for the first time, I see a glimmer of sympathy in her eyes for me, “I don’t think you want to know the answer to that.”I push past Damien, “I do. What do you mean a sacrifice of fate?! Whose fate?!”She looks at Damien before meeting my gaze, “The Righ is a powerful entity. You think it was easy for even somebody like me to be able to contain your powers? No. If I had used a normal spell, as strong as I might have tried to make it, it would have broken against your powers. I needed something stronger. Something that woul
