I jolt in shock at his words, “What?”

Damien’s eyes are glued on what’s happening around us, “When the elves realized that everything they had done was for naught, in their fury, they used a necromancer to curse the Righ and all that came after her. That’s why I once told you that the Righ’s life is never easy. There are too many hardships.”

“But the Gods! Couldn’t they do something?” I feel anger simmering within me. “They sent the Righ in the first place and they’re all powerful-”

“They could but they didn’t,” Damien’s voice is ruthless in his own anger. “As long as their purpose was fulfilled, they didn’t care. But they also did not like that the elves interfered in their decision. Especially when the elves found another use for the Righ. That’s why they shunned the elves to the Forest of Shadows. They wanted an entire realm? Now they have to live in a forest. Since the Others now cohabit in the human realm, the elves were forced into a small corner. They did attempt an uprising

I stare at him, “Why do you have to make it sound like that?”“Like what?” Damien raises a brow.“Like you’re doing me a favor!”He grins, “You’re overthinking this-”“Then why are you laughing?!”He wraps his arm around my shoulder, “Maybe because I like watching you get all worked up.”“Sadist.”“I’m the demon king for a reason,” he whispers before pressing his lips against my temple in a surprisingly affectionate gesture. I push him away before wrapping my arms around my knees, “I’m serious, Damien.”“I know,” his voice is unexpectedly quiet. I sneak a look at him and he’s wearing a distant expression on his face. “Love can’t be forced, little wolf, and neither can bonds. I know that from personal experience.”Dismay is like a punch in the gut, “But how do I-”“That monk is wrong,” Damien murmurs. “The Arush will heal me itself. He always was an idiot. Just because you are desperate to save me doesn’t mean the mating bond with form for you. It has never formed so quickly

“What?”Damien stares at me, seemingly stunned, “What?”His anger drains from him almost instantly, “What are you talking about?”I study him, “Your children were killed. She was unable to protect them. She couldn’t face you when you finally came for her.”Damien’s face is pale, “How do you know that?” “That day,” I flinch at the memory, “when I was taken by the elves, I think the Righs helped me survive the torture.”Damien’s jaw tightens at the mention of the whipping.“Sila was there and I saw –” I feel weird talking about what I saw, almost like someone peeking through a window. “I saw what happened, the whole thing. I saw her kill herself, and I felt her guilt, her own trauma.”Damien’s expression closes off and he turns away from me but I grab his arm, “Damien, they broke her. You would never have gotten your Sila back. She was a shell of that woman you loved.”My voice is steady and I don’t know why it’s so easy to talk about a woman Damien loved. Maybe it’s because my

When I blink, I don’t see it anymore. It’s odd.But I’m quick to return my attention to Damien. When I release him, he steps back but despite his stoic expression, I know he’s hurting inside. It doesn’t take a genius to guess that.He sits down on the bank and I follow suit, “You okay?”Picking up a stone, Damien tosses it in the water and I watch it skip over the surface of the water, a long way, before finally coming to a stop. “When you’ve lived this long, little wolf, you learn to compartmentalize your grief and your guilt. And so many thousands of years often lead to an uncountable number of regrets.”“Damien-”He cocks his head, shooting me a quick smile which does nothing to hide the emptiness in his eyes, “Don’t look at me like that.”I study his profile as this time he summons another rock in his hand, having seemingly forgotten whatever his purpose was in bringing me to this bayou.“Can I ask you something?”“Hm?”“Is it weird to keep falling for different women

My body hurts and I groan in pain. Where am I?I know I’m no longer in Damien’s bedroom. I’m laying on my side on a cemented floor and my head is throbbing. I lift my hand to my head and I feel something wet. It takes me a moment to recognize it as blood. My blood. What happened?I try to sit up and it’s a struggle, a strange weakness overtaking me.I let out a groan as I finally manage to pull myself into a sitting position. It’s then that I notice that there is something tied around my ankle. My eyes are adjusting to the darkness and I squint to make out what it is. My hand reaches down to touch it and I let out a pain-filled cry at the electric shock I receive. What the hell is that?Someone must have heard me cry out because moments later, I hear a creaking sound and a door opens. The sudden light makes me blink and then a small bulb lights up. “Awake, are you?”I find myself gazing at three males, ones that I recognize to my shock. They belong to three different fa

“What if they don’t choose to interfere?” One of them asks, urgently.Once of them scoffs, “We don’t even know if she’s telling the truth. If he’s in the Arush, there’s no knowing if he’ll ever wake up. Nobody has entered the Arush in eons. One only enters the Arush if the injury is life threatening. This gives us two advantages. One, we know he’s not immortal, and second, whenever he wakes up, he will be weak. Too weak to go against us.”I still don’t know how they managed to get me here. Where are Caleb and Fera? What happened to them? What happened to the creatures who had supposedly been guarding me?There are a lot of pieces of the puzzle that are missing.“That doesn’t mean we should not use the Righ as a bargaining piece to seize control,” one of the argues. “The Rhoder Tribe is known for both their barriers and their hostility towards all of the demon kings in the past. And they are incredibly powerful. If it means bringing Damien down, they’ll cooperate. Besides, they just

The shock of what I have been able to do barely has a chance to sink in because just a few hours later the three demons return, this time putting the chains on my wrists and ankles. They’re not taking any chances it seem. But my wolf is not my only weapon.I flex my fingers as I’m pulled by the scruff of my neck to something that looks like a transport wagon. The chains are burning into my skin but I’ve become used to pain and ignoring it is easier. The one thing that I’m grateful for is that aside from the burning sensation on where the chains make contact with my skin, whatever magic is on them is not weakening me.However, my captors seem to think it is, so I let them.I may be able to fight one of them with hand-to-hand combat, but all three? It’s doubtful.Be patient, I tell myself, feeling tired now, and regretting eating the dry bread they had tossed at me before returning to take me. But I had felt like I hadn’t eaten in months, my stomach twisting with raw hunger. But

“What?!”I nearly jump out of my skin.“The monsters from inside the forest?!”The boy makes a sad face, “You don’t like them? But they’re a part of me. Does that mean you don’t like me?”He tilts his head and I feel the temperature drop around us. There’s more meaning to his question and I’m not stupid. He may look like a child but he is far more dangerous. And I have a feeling that being inside a dream isn’t going to offer me any protection.“I don’t dislike you,” I say, slowly, my eyes are on the crazily flickering shadows. “But you said they were monsters who wanted to hurt me and now you’re saying something else. So, I’m a little concerned.”He snaps back to normal almost immediately, beaming, “Oh! Yeah, they do want to hurt you but they can’t. I won’t let them. I’ll never let anything hurt you, Isabel. You’re mine.”My blood curdles in cold fear at the darkly possessive edge to his tone. “Okay, um,” I look around. Not my circus, not my monkeys. I’m not even going to tou

His tone is so dismissive that it takes me aback, “Y-You do?”I move my hand only to gasp out in shock and pain.My forearms. They’re burning!“You have been harmed,” The child’s voice is filled with a vicious anger, one I can’t focus on at the moment. Both my forearms are throbbing in unimaginable pain and I swallow a sob, “Why is it hurting here? I’m dreaming. It shouldn’t-”My voice cuts off when I hear the cracking thunder sound, “What-”The sky is a pitch black and when my eyes swivel towards the child before me, his own eyes are flashing in ruthless fury, “They will pay in blood.”I try to speak, to give him some information to find me but my voice is not working. It takes me a heartbeat to realize that my hands are fading.I’m waking up.My mouth is moving but nothing is coming out.My eyes fly open to a searing pain in my lower abdomen just as something hard makes contact with it again.I scream in pain as the force of the kick has me thrown against the wall, my bac

Mara’s anticlimactic death has me reeling. But now is not the time to worry about that. I shift into my wolf form, attacking the enemy with a ruthlessness. It’s true what the witch said. My mating bond has increased my strength. I feel lighter on my feet as I wade through the elves like they’re ants. My speed is faster, although not to the level of that of Damien’s.I can feel some of my abilities leaking through but I’ve still not been able to access my abilities. I’m a little disappointed. I thought weakening the seal would have more of an impact but aside from this soft leakage of warm sensation, there is nothing else.I feel frustrated but I can’t do anything.Damien, though.Damien is stronger than I have ever seen. He’s cutting down the elves with speed, his focus sharp. His laughter is vicious and despite that, my heart flutters in my chest at how glorious he looks. I look at him and that is my mistake. You never allow yourself to get distracted on the battlefield.A

The troops are already waiting in their battle positions when we arrive.Damien brings me with him to the battlefield. He’s wearing a suit of dark armor and I feel tense, “The Rubab Stone-”“I’ll have to be more careful,” his voice is calm. “Last time I wasn’t as aware. This time I know I am not invincible.”“Damien,” my heart is twisting in my chest. “I-”He cups my cheek, his voice gentle, “I’ll be fine, little wolf. Just don’t leave your guards.”I know he would have preferred to stash me somewhere but it’s clear that he wants me close by. After so many traitors popping up after the first battle, it only makes sense.“Don’t let anybody catch you off guard,” he thrusts a sword into my hand. “Trust your instinct when you fight. They’re going to try and separate us. Let’s make sure that, that doesn’t happen.”I give him a small smile, feeling a sliver of hope on seeing his confidence.“Okay.”I get on my toes and press a sweet kiss to his mouth. We don’t get more time togethe

“What is it?” “Something has happened in the demon realm,” he says, grimly, before looking down at my hand.I shake my head, “The pain is gone.”“Good, let’s go.”“Thank you,” I give the witch a weak smile, not knowing whether to actually be grateful or blame her for the wrong that has happened in my life. But it’s always a good idea to be graceful. She waves us off and I’m in Damien’s arms as he runs out of the cave, past the trees, towards the temple.“The portal-”“Caleb will open it when I give the signal,” he’s not even out of breath as he rushes down the temple where the shrine gates are.As we move towards the town, I grab his shoulder, “Wait! What is that?!”The sky is orange.“How long were we inside?” I mutter. “Is the sun rising?”“No,” Damien says after a long moment. “It’s fire. The town has been set on fire.”“We have to help-”But Damien holds me back, “Look.”For a moment, I don’t understand what he is saying. And then I see the arrows shooting within the

“There has to be something someone can do,” I ask, forcing my voice to stay calm, despite the roiling fear inside of me.The witch’s voice is kind now, “I’m afraid not. You’re not the first who has tried to seek a way to undo the curse.”It’s hard to keep my tears at bay. The tears are not of sadness but rather of the crippling fear of the unknown future that awaits me. At this point, I am already aware of the nature of the painful deaths a majority of the Righs faced. It was just physical pain they had to go through, that would have been fine. Horrifying as it may be, one can tolerate that to an extent. But seeing your loved ones be tortured? The mental anguish is not something I will be able to take any longer. My suffering may be different from that of the previous Righs. It may not even compare. But for me, it is enough. I am reaching my breaking point. There are so many people in my life that I now care about, so many people who can be used against me. It frightens me to th

The witch studies me, “There have been numerous prophecies recorded about the Righs over time but there was one that was recorded by a Righ who was born to a Seer and a witch. You can call it a curse or a prophecy.”I instantly remember what I saw. The memory of the battlefield. The woman who was held down, screaming. My blood turns to ice as I recall that memory. It still gives me nightmares. “The downfall of the elves. From the hands of the weakest of the Righs. And right now,” the witch looks at me, “no offence, but you are the weakest Righ there is.”I’m being hit by so many curveballs that getting my feelings hurt is at the bottom of the list right now.“It’s funny that you think I’m going to bring about the downfall of the elves when I can’t even protect myself or use my abilities.”My voice is tight with barely restrained anger.“The stars have aligned and the stars have never lied before,” the witch says, easily. “The time is drawing nearer for the final battle.”I don

I feel my knees turn weak, “What?”“But you created the seal!” Damien snaps. “You should be able to break it!”“Logically, yes,” the witch says, calmly. “But this seal is special. It draws its power through sacrifice of fate. Those spells are impossible to break.”A shutter falls over Damien’s face, “What have you done?”I look between the two feeling like I’m in the dark, “What does she mean? What do you mean by a sacrifice of fate?”The witch studies me and for the first time, I see a glimmer of sympathy in her eyes for me, “I don’t think you want to know the answer to that.”I push past Damien, “I do. What do you mean a sacrifice of fate?! Whose fate?!”She looks at Damien before meeting my gaze, “The Righ is a powerful entity. You think it was easy for even somebody like me to be able to contain your powers? No. If I had used a normal spell, as strong as I might have tried to make it, it would have broken against your powers. I needed something stronger. Something that woul
