Damien is by my side, gripping my hand.

Caleb does the same and I feel a cool rush of healing energy move through me.

But it doesn’t work.

“If it’s a sealing spell,” I gasp through the pain. “Why is it hurting?”

I look at Caleb desperately, “Spells don’t malfunction, right?!”

“They shouldn’t,” he mutters, trying to send more healing energy through me.

“Stop,” I shake my head, forcing myself to breathe past the pain. “Give me a few minutes.”

It’s getting more manageable as the minutes press on. I can hear the voices around me but I mute them about, focusing on the pain and the pressure in my hand.

Slowly, and steadily, it ebbs away, and I feel my knees crumple.

Damien catches me, letting me lean on him, “Isabel.”

“Just a few more minutes,” I try to keep my voice steady, not wanting to upset him even more but I can hear the waver in my voice.

It takes me more than a few minutes for the pain to finally subside. When it does, Fera is forcing healing potions down my throat and I

“So, we’re just going?” I watch Damien as he moves about the room, looking for something. “What about the castle? After what happened the last time, do you really think it’s a good idea to leave it alone like this?”“I trust Fera.”I scoff, “So you say.”He stops what he’s doing and gives me an incredulous look, “What’s that supposed to mean?”“I mean,” I sit up, glaring at him. “You and her are skirting around the issues between you two, like two bulls in a ring. Neither is willing to engage. You won’t apologize for how you treated her all these years and she won’t put her faith in you again.”Damien looks uncomfortable, “She doesn’t want me to apologize.”“How do you know?”“I know her.”I stare at the man my heart now beats for, “You’re a coward.”“Hey!” Damien growls at me. “Watch it!”“Or what?” I shoot back. “What’re you going to do? Not apologize to me?”His jaw sets, “Why are you so persistent over this topic? She knows I care about her. She doesn’t need my words. Sh

I don’t see Damien for the rest of the day.I go for a run with Cerebus in the forest and my wolf flops down with exhaustion as we head back. However, it takes me a minute to realize that Seth had just walked in on Fera and was trying to console her in a way. I’m about to step in when I tilt my head. I’ve never really seen the two of them together, alone, and their body language says a lot.Something tells me to leave them alone.Clearly, Fera hasn’t been very honest with me.A wolfish grin on my lips, I pad back to the castle before shifting to my human form and heading to my room.Damien is just entering

“This is the town?”It’s an ordinary looking place if you don’t account for the massive mountain behind it. I now understand why they call it the mountain forest. From where we’re standing it looks like any other town. But for some reason, my skin is crawling. There is something about this place which is telling me to turn around and go back. The urge is so strong that I almost find myself turning around when Damien grabs me, “Don’t give in to it.”His eyes have a sharp look to them and I meet his gaze, troubled, “I don’t think we should be here.”“I know,” he holds me close, his lips brushing against my temple. He does that a lot now. These sweet touches. Damien likes to touch me or find a reason to kiss me. His affection had always been of the aggressive sort but ever since we finally mated, it feels like something in him calmed down. I don’t hate it.I enjoy the distracted kisses, his thumb stroking against my nape, his fingers twirling my hair when he’s deep in thought. I n

It’s a bar that we end up going to.The moment we step inside, even I can tell that this is not a human only bar. I can sense the magic in the air which meant there were Others here.We make our way to the counter and my stomach suddenly rumbles.I flush in humiliation and Damien snickers, before reaching out and grabbing a menu from the bar, “Here. Get something to eat.”As I look through the menu, I decide to get a burger, done rare, and some water. I’m just about to place the order when I see a picture nailed to the wooden pillar next to me. It has a picture of a woman. One of the customers must have seen me looking at it, “That’s Regina Lorne, the missing woman.”“I’m sorry?” I give him a confused look. “Who?”The man is wearing a cowboy hat, “You know, that girl who went up the mountain and never returned. Her parents posted that up, thinking she’ll return. They’ll keep searching till the next one goes missing.”The next one?I must have said it out loud because the man

I never once thought I would hold a possessive streak but seeing this woman eye Damien like he is a piece of meat that she can’t wait to get her claws in.Damien smiles at me, leaning down to bite the lobe of my ear, whispering in my ear as he went, “Jealous?”“In your dreams,” I murmur back, smiling pleasantly at Lauren.I’m not threatened by this human woman. But I’m also not willing to let her even entertain any dirty thoughts when it comes to my mate. The only one who’s allowed to undress Damien with her eyes is me. I have exclusive rights to that.Lauren doesn’t seem to be aware of our side conversation. She beams brightly at Damien, “Oh, come on. You don’t have to be shy in front of your wife.”I glare at her husband who is so focused on his meal that he doesn’t even seem to be aware that his wife is throwing herself at another man.Damien just wraps his arms around me, “Sorry.”Any self-respecting woman would figure out the cold shoulder but then there are plenty of wome

Damien lets out a soft growl but the old man waves his hand, “I’m not a threat to you or your lady. I’m just telling you what I know. I’ve seen a couple of hardheads think that just because they’re ‘different’, their chances out there are better than us normies. The fools never came back.”I exchange a look with Damien who seems to be suddenly amused at the term ‘normies’. “How do you know they never came back?” I ask in a low voice. “And how do you know what they were-”“He’s has witch blood in him,” Damien comments, leaning against the bar. “What?” I shoot a quick look at him, surprised. “How do you know that?”“His wrist,” Damien grabs my chin in that overly dominating way of his and turns my face in the direction of the old man’s left wrist. There are three tear shaped black mark on his inner wrist. The old man grins, “My mother was one. Left me with my old man. But she kept coming around. I don’t have her gifts but I have a sixth sense. I nearly jump out of my skin in shock at the sight of her. Wearing a white gown that reached her ankles, she’s got dark hair and light colored eyes. “Um,” my mouth is dry, “Are you seeing that?”Damien blinks, “What’s a human child doing here?”“So, I’m not seeing things?” I ask, in relief, before calling out. “Uh, hello? Little girl?”She doesn’t say anything, just watching us from a distance.“Is it just me or is she a little creepy?” Damien mutters. “Oh, don’t be a big baby,” I scowl. “Litle girl?” I call out. This time she takes a few steps towards us, albeit hesitantly.“Are you okay?” I move closer, not wanting to scare her. When she reaches closer, I realize that her hair is wet and she’s shivering.“Oh, dear!” I quickly take off my own sweater and wrap it around her. “You’re so cold! Damien, find some wood! We need to get a fire started!”Damien gives me an annoyed look, “Little wolf, we have more important-”“Don’t make me ask again.”He blinks at the dangerou

Mara’s anticlimactic death has me reeling. But now is not the time to worry about that. I shift into my wolf form, attacking the enemy with a ruthlessness. It’s true what the witch said. My speed is faster, although not to the level of that of Damien’s.I can feel some of my abilities leaking through but I’ve still not been able to access my abilities. I’m a little disappointed. The troops are already waiting in their battle positions when we arrive.Damien brings me with him to the battlefield. He’s wearing a suit of dark armor and I feel tense, “The Rubab Stone-”“I’ll have to be more careful,” his voice is calm. “Last time I wasn’t as aware. This time I know I am not invincible.”“Damien,” my heart is twisting in my chest. “I-”He cups my cheek, his voice gentle, “I’ll be fine, little wolf. Just don’t leave your guards.”I know he would have preferred to stash me somewhere but it’s clear that he wants me close by. After so many traitors popping up after the first battle, it only makes sense.“Don’t let anybody catch you off guard,” he thrusts a sword into my hand. “Trust your instinct when you fight. They’re going to try and separate us. Let’s make sure that, that doesn’t happen.”I give him a small smile, feeling a sliver of hope on seeing his confidence.“Okay.”I get on my toes and press a sweet kiss to his mouth. We don’t get more time togethe

“What is it?” “Something has happened in the demon realm,” he says, grimly, before looking down at my hand.I shake my head, “The pain is gone.”“Good, let’s go.”“Thank you,” I give the witch a weak smile, not knowing whether to actually be grateful or blame her for the wrong that has happened in my life. But it’s always a good idea to be graceful. She waves us off and I’m in Damien’s arms as he runs out of the cave, past the trees, towards the temple.“The portal-”“Caleb will open it when I give the signal,” he’s not even out of breath as he rushes down the temple where the shrine gates are.As we move towards the town, I grab his shoulder, “Wait! “There has to be something someone can do,” I ask, forcing my voice to stay calm, despite the roiling fear inside of me.The witch’s voice is kind now, “I’m afraid not. You’re not the first who has tried to seek a way to undo the curse.”It’s hard to keep my tears at bay. The tears are not of sadness but rather of the crippling fear of the unknown future that awaits me. At this point, I am already aware of the nature of the painful deaths a majority of the Righs faced. It was just physical pain they had to go through, that would have been fine. Horrifying as it may be, one can tolerate that to an extent. But seeing your loved ones be tortured? The mental anguish is not something I will be able to take any longer. My suffering may be different from that of the previous Righs. It may not even compare. But for me, it is enough. I am reaching my breaking point. There are so many people in my life that I now care about, so many people who can be used against me. It frightens me to th

The witch studies me, “There have been numerous prophecies recorded about the Righs over time but there was one that was recorded by a Righ who was born to a Seer and a witch. You can call it a curse or a prophecy.”I instantly remember what I saw. The memory of the battlefield. The woman who was held down, screaming. My blood turns to ice as I recall that memory. It still gives me nightmares. “The downfall of the elves. From the hands of the weakest of the Righs. And right now,” the witch looks at me, “no offence, but you are the weakest Righ there is.”I’m being hit by so many curveballs that getting my feelings hurt is at the bottom of the list right now.“It’s funny that you think I’m going to bring about the downfall of the elves when I can’t even protect myself or use my abilities.”My voice is tight with barely restrained anger.“The stars have aligned and the stars have never lied before,” the witch says, easily. “The time is drawing nearer for the final battle.”I don

I feel my knees turn weak, “What?”“But you created the seal!” Damien snaps. “You should be able to break it!”“Logically, yes,” the witch says, calmly. “But this seal is special. It draws its power through sacrifice of fate. Those spells are impossible to break.”A shutter falls over Damien’s face, “What have you done?”I look between the two feeling like I’m in the dark, “What does she mean? What do you mean by a sacrifice of fate?”The witch studies me and for the first time, I see a glimmer of sympathy in her eyes for me, “I don’t think you want to know the answer to that.”I push past Damien, “I do. What do you mean a sacrifice of fate?! Whose fate?!”She looks at Damien before meeting my gaze, “The Righ is a powerful entity. You think it was easy for even somebody like me to be able to contain your powers? No. If I had used a normal spell, as strong as I might have tried to make it, it would have broken against your powers. I needed something stronger. Something that woul
