ANNA
THERE WAS NO hope. I sat at the edge of my cell and cried pathetically. The tears streamed down my face. I started regretting my past choices.
"Don't regret it," my wolf, Ava, said to me. "You could not have survived with Alpha Rick."
Wouldn't I? I sobbed. It was still better than being locked in a cold, dark cell with death in your future. Mitch had clearly told me that I was going to die, and I did not doubt him one bit. He was going to kill me.
"And who says Alpha Rick wouldn't have killed you too?" Ava asked me.
I rubbed my eyes and got to my feet. I walked to the front of the cell and held the steel bars. "Could I please get a blanket down here?" I asked one of the guards in a small voice. "It's terrible cold down here."
It was like they were statues. They didn't move or give any indications that I had just spoken to them.
I rubbed my belly, worrying about the baby forming in my womb. I should not be exposed to extreme conditions like this. Doctor Alan had told me to avoid situations like this. If only...
"I need a blanket!" I said again, adding a little more desperation to my voice. The only response I got was the echo from my voice as it bounced around the walls.
I hugged myself and went back to sit down. I needed to save my energy. I would need it in the coming months, I might get a chance to escape and I didn't want to be weak when the chance arose.
I closed my eyes and for a second, I was back in the Red Moon pack with my loving husband. His hand was around my shoulders, holding me tenderly and the other hand was on my belly, connecting with the baby in my womb. Beth was not there. We were happy, just as we had always been.
I suddenly heard the echoing sounds of heavy footsteps, I turned away from my husband's arm, trying to see where the footsteps were coming from and getting closer, but I didn't see anyone. It was like --
I was slowly roused from my dream. It was more of a hallucination. The heavy footsteps had been from a tall, broad man coming to the cell.
"Alpha told us not to open the gates or even have any communications with her," one of the guards was saying.
The man said in a deep voice. "Open the fucking gates, Alphonso." He looked over the guard's shoulder and looked at me. "Just take a look at her pitiful self, you think she can do anything against me and then the both of you?"
The guard turned and looked at me. His eyes flickered with uncertainty then he grumbled under his breath and unlocked the gates. "Just because you're the beta, I will allow you," He muttered. "But for no more than 5 minutes,"
"Thank you, Alphonso," The new man said, walking in towards me.
Instinctively, I scrambled back and he stopped in his tracks.
"It's alright," he said in a soft voice. "It's okay. I'm not here to harm you."
He had kind eyes and his eyes were warm so I believed him. He held out his hands. "I brought you this," He handed me a thick blanket. "I figured this place might be cold." He lowered himself and sat down beside me. "You should not be here in the first place."
I collected the blanket and held it close. "Thank you so much," I said in a small voice.
"Here," He placed a hot plate of porridge on the floor beside my leg. "You might be hungry."
At the aroma, my stomach rumbled loudly. I took a big steaming spoon of porridge and swallowed it even before tasting or chewing. I was that hungry. I had not eaten in close to two days.
"You are Anna Kylin, yes?" He asked.
I stopped eating, suddenly embarrassed of my surname and family. I nodded slightly without looking at him.
"I am Draco," He said. "Draco Thuram. I am the beta of this pack."
I looked at him fearfully. So he was here under the command of that savage.
He chuckled like he could tell what I was thinking of. "He doesn't know I am here. He is probably -- um, doing alpha things. You're not eating..."
I looked down at my food and continued eating.
"What are you doing here?" He asked. "Your father is a powerful man with a lot of land. We know about it." He snorted. "What are you doing this far North?"
"I left my pack," I muttered the obvious.
"I can see that," Draco said. "But the question is why? Does your father know you are away from the pack?"
"My father is dead," I chewed slowly. "He died some years ago."
Draco stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Why didn't we hear of that?" He asked himself softly. "So your pack is undefended now?"
I could see the gears turn in his head. "My, um, former husband is the new Alpha." I quickly. Even though I hated Rick for his betrayal, I didn't want the pack to be attacked based on the information I gave out.
"You are married?" His eyes widened in surprise.
"Not anymore," I muttered.
"To whom?" He asked.
I took a second to reply. "Rick Forson."
Draco stroked his chin and looked away. "Rick Forson..." He repeated. "isn't that the alpha of the Red Moon pack?"
I nodded. "He is. Our packs merged." I said.
"What?" Draco asked. "That's news. But why are you here and not beside your husband... uh ex-husband?"
I shook my head. I was not ready to divulge my pregnancy. "Nothing happened. I just left."
He looked at me for a second like he wanted to press further but then he averted his gaze and we sat in silence. I finished up the food and gratefully handed him the plate.
"5 minutes is up, Beta Draco," The guard Alphonso called.
Draco brought out a long water bag from his jacket and gave it to me. "It's warm, okay? Hopefully, this will hold until I can come again."
He stood up and looked down at me. "I will try and talk to Mitch," He said. "I'm sure he is mistaken about you."
"Thank you, Beta Draco," I said.
He waved me off and walked out. He looked at the guards and said in a low voice but I still heard, "She is the daughter of an alpha. Treat her with respect. You hear me?"
After he left, I spread the blanket on the floor and laid on it. I was more comfortable than I had been over the past week. I had a full belly and a closed place to sleep - even though it was a prison.
I allowed my mind to drift away and ask the question that had been throbbing in my head.
If Rick was impotent, how did I get pregnant?
Had I had sex with someone else and that part of my memory is missing?
What exactly is going on?
MITCH"WHAT EXACTLY IS going on? What are you doing?" Draco snarled at Mitch. "It has been exactly one week and you still haven't done anything about the girl in the dungeons." He paced the room in agitation.Mitch relaxed on the couch, reading through some leaflets of paper. "Can you believe that the prices of these things are going up? We got a shitload of diesel two weeks ago and this week it's almost tripled the price... and even little things like books for the school too." He asked absent-mindedly tossing the paper away and watching them float to the floor. "Sometimes I even bother why we do any business with the human community. We are superior to them. We should rule them by force.""Are you even listening to me?" Draco sighed in exasperation. "As I am superior to you," Mitch's voice grew harder as he spoke. "Both in species and in rank. I am not some miserly werewolf like the rest of you. You should watch how to talk to me."Draco froze and turned to look at Mitch. They remai
ANNA"OH SHIT!"That was the first thought that came to my head as I decorated Mitch's feet with my vomit. But I couldn't help it. I was getting more advanced in my pregnancy and soon I would not be able to hide it any longer. I had been locked up for a week now. Draco, the beta visited me every day with food and water and some more blankets. I wondered why he was nice to me, or was he just nice to everybody? The guards too had started to treat me a bit better. I had thought my situation was getting better, maybe I was going to go free. But one look at Mitch and that hope dissipated as fast as it had come. His eyes still burned with hatred towards me and things I didn't know about. I was a bit surprised to see him and I suddenly felt nauseous when he walked into the cell.I kept my gaze averted all the while he spoke in a harsh tone. I could feel myself getting more uncomfortable and he seemed to be enjoying my squirming. When he told me to speak to him and I opened my mouth, I could
MITCH"SHE'S FUCKING PREGNANT!" Mitch was still finding it hard to wrap his head around it.Draco didn't look so disturbed and he didn't even know what the fuss was all about. He took a grape from the bowl of fruits and on the table and popped it into his mouth. "And so?" He asked, raising an eyebrow."She's going to give birth to a bastard on my lands!" Mitch growled."Oh so you're letting her stay, then," Draco asked, now interested. He sat up."Do I have a choice?" Mitch asked. "I can't send a pregnant woman away, Our borders are very unsafe.""See?" Draco smiled. "You're not such a monster yourself."Mitch scoffed. "She will be gone as soon as she gives birth and stops weaning her pups." He sat down on his leather chair and swiveled slowly. "I'd much rather like to kill her, but...""... with her father dead, you won't get any satisfaction," Draco completed.Mitch sighed and nodded. He was often very surprised at how Draco usually deciphered his thoughts like they were soul brother
3 MONTHS LATER...ANNA"THE TRUCK IS all packed up," I called in a loud voice.I heard Lorna stumble and curse from inside her house before she yelled "Coming," "She will be out in a minute, sir," I said to the truck driver. He nodded at me through the sideview mirror. Lorna stumbled out of the door and came towards me. Her face was red and she flashed me a bright smile. "Why. Hello, Anna," she said. "Hope you didn't wait for me long."I chuckled. Lorna was a terrible late goer to anything. She climbed into the passenger seat, when I started to get in behind her, she shook her head. "No no," she closed the door tightly. "You are not going anywhere today. Not with your condition," "What? You can't do that to me," My condition. I laughed. My condition being my sharply protruding belly. "This is one of the few chances I have to actually go and see the market fair.""There'll be another one next year, darling," She said sweetly.Next year. Would I be here next year? I often wondered. E
MITCH"YOU'RE STILL HERE, then," A voice said, making Mitch turn. It was his Beta. He frowned and scoffed before looking back at the babies in their special units. They had been born a month too early, but after Lorna's examination, they were just fine. And yes, HE had delivered the babies himself. The memory and what actually happened was hazy in his memory because it was like he was working on auto control when it had happened. The first baby was all cleaned up before Lorna arrived and when she came, Anna was passed out. So while some healers took over cleaning the second child, Lorna had checked in on Anna and she said, "Critical condition. The babies were too strong for her spirit. If they had remained in any longer, they would have killed her.""So... she's not dead," Mitch had asked. Lorna shook her head. "Thanks to you, she's not. But she's not well. She needs to be rested in 4 to 5 weeks."Anna...What was he going to do with her? "keep her!" His beast growled. He sighed. It
SIX LONG YEARS later...ANNA"And to welcome the best-graduating student and only female in her class who stayed steadfast until the end," The announcer called, "Anna Kylin, mother of twins and the valedictorian let's stand up and give a round of applause."The hall erupted in loud applause as I stood and walked to the podium to give my speech. The speech that I had been preparing since I got the news that I was valedictorian. But I stood behind the podium and looked around, the speech I had prepared about moral values and integrity suddenly vanished from my head. The crowd was invisible to me due to the blinding lights that shone against my face, but I could feel the presence of over 300 people. Amongst them were my beautiful children.I heaved a sigh and for some reason, some of the crowd chuckled and applauded me. "Go, girl!" Someone called from the crowd and I smiled. It was probably Lorna.Standing behind the podium and the travails of the past 6 years suddenly felt worth it. Six
MITCHMITCH KNEW SOMETHING changed in him since the first time he saw the children. He had expected the feeling to change or diminish over the years, but to his surprise, they remained and even grew stronger. They spent more time with him in the palace than they did in Anna's house - which was no more the tiny cabin as before, he'd had her moved to a better and bigger house near the main street. When Anna proposed that she wanted to be sent to college, it had come as a surprise to him. He had mulled it over in his mind, the kingdom does not have a specially trained doctor - they had never needed one. Werewolves rarely got sick they only needed a healer for pregnancy and giving birth. Nothing much more than that. But Anna's pregnancy had taken a different turn when she gave birth a month too early and the diagnosis was that the children were too strong for her depleted wolf spirit, she was taken to a human hospital but the doctors that were supposed to treat her and restore blood level
MITCH"FUCK HER," MITCH scoffed to himself as he sauntered up the stairs to his suite. He walked in and saw Ophelia sprawled on his bed. "Alpha Mitch," She said, sitting up and crossing her legs seductively."Ophelia," Mitch nodded at her. "It's been a while."Ophelia rolled her eyes. "I've always been available to you. You can take me anytime," She stood up and walked to him. "But you'd rather spend your time with those --"Mitch cleared his throat to warn her not to say anything that would anger him. She clamped her mouth shut and walked up to him. She placed a finger on his chest and went around him slowly, rubbing her body against his."I traveled off for a while," She said. "I went to Florida," she came up tiptoes and rubbed her nose against his chin. "I had to get away from these mountains and snow. Seeing the beach and palm trees is very nice. You should come with me sometime."Mitch chuckled and pulled away. "I don't think so." He saw himself on the beach, but not with Ophelia
