ANNA KYLIN CHESTER

I WOKE UP a few hours after Mitch left. His scent still hung in the air of the room and I could still feel the shape of his lips on my forehead. I got out of bed with some difficulty. My joints ached and my head pounded.

Were all these because of the pregnancy? I wondered as I made my way to the bathroom, praying to the moon goddess that Mitch had not used up all the hot water.

I turned on the shower and checked the temperature with the back of my palm even though I didn't have to. Steam billowed to the ceiling as soon as the water seeped through.

As I made my bath, my mind drifted away again. I was going to do more detailed research on Lycan pregnancy. I needed to know how long I was going to be pregnant and how early the signs were going to start to show.

I sank into the bathtub, sighing in relief as the sleep and tiredness were burnt out of my bones and aches.

Mitch said something had come up, and he was going to be very busy today. What could that be? Had the

MITCH CHESTERMITCH SWERVED INTO the parking lot and looked at the dilapidated building. It was a low, long old bar. Drumming his fingers on the steering wheel, he thought of how dangerous this was. And he had left without telling anyone anything. He reached for his phone, wanting to call Draco, but he shook his head.Draco would put on a lot of fuss and spoil everything if he showed up here.Besides, this shouldn't take long, Mitch thought to himself. He would be back before anyone knew he was gone. He got out of the car and headed to the door with purposeful strides. He pushed it and went in, looking around and taking in the sorry state of the bar. The bar was almost empty, except for some leftover drunks from the previous night slumped over their stools and the floor. There was a fat squat man behind the bar, looking bored. Mitch made his way to the counter and sat down carefully on a stool. It was wobbly under his weight."How m' I help you?" The man slurred. He sounded almost

Mitch stared into the deep soulless eyes of the vampire before him."You punched my bartender," Vorenus said."He shot me," Mitch countered. They remained silent for the next couple of seconds. Vorenus's eyes went to the open wound still bleeding. Any other vampire would be going crazy at the smell of Lycan blood, but Vorenus simply said, "Should you not cover that up?" He gestured with his head. "Meeting a vampire with an open, happily bleeding wound is like playing with fire."Mitch smirked. "And yet, you have not even twitched at the sight. You seem to be in total control."Vorenus chuffed. "I am a sire vampire." His eyes looked. "You didn't seem so thrilled the last time we met, i did not expect you to go hunting for me." Mitch scoffed and said. "Walk with me,” He brushed past the vampire and walked farther away from the border.“you don’t want to be seen with me,” vorenus chuckled. “ashamed now, are we?”

MITCH CHESTERHE WALKED BACK but did not go to where he parked his car, instead, he took the shorter route and came out near the trading center of the kingdom. It was busy, as usual, where women hustled with the truck from the human town for goods and plants they could not get elsewhere. The noise quietened significantly when they noticed that he was in their midst. "Alpha," they bowed. "Your Highness,"As if on cue, he was surrounded by 4 enthusiastic guards, who formed a shield wall around him. Relief was written all over their faces. "Go to the northern border," Mitch said to one of them. "My car is parked there in the snow. Take it to the garage.""Yes, sir!" The guard saluted and marched away. The remaining guards walked with Mitch as they made their way to the palace. As he walked into the palace foyer, he looked around in search of Draco, but the Beta was nowhere to be found. He turned to another guard and said, "I want you to go personally to the house of each senate member,

MITCH CHESTERMITCH INHALED AGAIN to regain his composure before he said, "The vampires are getting stronger, and a war is coming."There was another ripple in the room."We are prepared for a war," Sil said. "We can stay on the bylines and watch them as they have always done. We don't have to get involved..."Some heads nodded in agreement to Silver. They looked at Mitch for him to give his approval, but his lips were pursed."Right, alpha?" Silver cocked her head.Mitch sighed and shook his head. "We can't "not get involved"..." "What? How? Why?" They asked.Mitch sighed. He looked up at Draco for help but the Beta remained aloof and slightly unconcerned. So Mitch knew he had to handle this by himself."Because the war is coming directly to our doorstep," Mitch answered. He nodded in satisfaction at the look of shock written on all their faces. "What the vampire wants is in the kingdom with us.""What is that?" One of the men asked."What it is does not matter," Mitch said. "But we

ANNA KYLIN CHESTER I FELT IT the moment he stepped into the kingdom again. I'm sure Draco felt it top because there was a slump of relief in his shoulders."You feel him too?" Lorna asked and I nodded. He owes us an explanation. A very long one. And while we headed back to the palace, I was expecting him to mind link me with an apology and an explanation of why he left abruptly and where he went to... but the mind link never came. When we got to the palace, where we thought he would be, he was not there, only for Patty to tell us that he said he had a meeting to attend to. I turned to Draco, "Did you know of any meeting?"Draco shook his head. "It would be a meeting in the pack hall..." he said."But aren't you the one that normally calls for them?" I asked. He nodded, a frown appeared on his forehead and he said, "I should have gotten wind of this if he called for the meeting through the mind link..." He stroked his beard."Well, what are we waiting for?" Lorna asked. "Let's crash

ANNA KYLIN CHESTER I TOOK A deep breath and looked across the room again. All the men – and woman – looked at me and waited for what I had to say and to be honest, when I had stood up from my chair with all that authority, I didn’t have anything prepared in my head. “The war is coming,” I simply said, knowing that I was still repeating what Mitch just said. But with the way the eyes of the men shone as they looked at me, one would think that I was reading into their destinies. “And as Silver said, normally, we would sit on the by-lines and watch them eat each other up, except this time… we do not have the luxury to. The war is coming right to our doorstep, and we need every advantage that we have -” “-except asking the werewolf council for help…” Chad Bowman cut into me. He was nudged in the ribs by Lane, who shushed him to be quiet. I smiled grimly and nodded. “except ask the world werewolf council for help…” I echoed. “But we will accept the help that the vampire is offering.” T

VLADMIR HAD LIVED all this time, he was easily the longest-living creature in the world and he took pride in it. There was nothing he had not seen, and his mind had been fine-tuned over the years to notice any small change in anything. So he noticed immediately when there was a change in Vorenus. He could not place his finger on exactly when the change had begun, but he estimated that it was during the time of Alice. Vladimir knew that during that period, he had been too busy with the blonde bitch to pay attention to much of anything else. That must be when Vorenus changed. On second thought, Vladimir stroked his jaw, he knew when it had happened, but he thought that it was normal and would eventually blow over. After all, it was normal for there to be a little jealousy and change when Alice came and Vladimir had most of his eyes on her.Vladimir stood on his roof, overlooking the night skies. He was deep in thought, wondering what he was going to do about Vorenus. He wondered if the

ANNA KYLIN CHESTER"I WAS LOOKING for you," Mitch's voice said. I refused my instinct to turn and look at him. "How long have you been here?" He asked. His voice was closer now.Since I left the meeting, I had been in the woods, enjoying the serene silence of the snow, and wishing my emotions were as straightforward and plain as the color of my surroundings - mostly white for the snow that was on the floor, and in the branches and trees. I watched the snowflakes drift to the floor as I maneuvered through my own emotions. I was feeling confident, but at the same time scared. I was angry at Mitch, but at the same relieved.I remained hidden in the slightly warmer enclosure of wily branches for close to an hour until I heard the heavy footsteps as his feet crunched ice flakes on the floor."Are you okay?" His deep voice swam into my head. He came to sit beside me, gratefully, he didn't touch me. He just sat on the log of wood, looking straight ahead. When I didn't respond, he added, "Yo

FIVE MONTHS LATER,I RUB my belly fondly. It has become a subconscious habit of mine since the belly bump sprouted. On some nights, I wake up from the nightmares and horrors of being locked up in the prison underground. It has been 5 months already, but the remnants of what we lost were still vivid. Every fallen warrior was given a befitting burial. After the death of the vampires, Paige started having recurring dreams of her lost memories. I had Lorna suppress it again. i also had Lorna wipe out the memory of Janet the mistress, now she was a servant in the palace... "Are we almost there yet?" Addison asked from the back seat. Mitch grunted. "Almost." I turn and look at him. The scar he had gotten from the battle that ran across his eyes was now white, it was healing well. The cut missed his eyes by less than an inch, but the scar added to his dangerous look. I reach out and touch his hand. He turns and looks at me, but I can not decipher what is going on in his head as his eyes

Arranging the warriors for battle on such short notice was not an easy feat as most of his warriors were not familiar with guns, but he had made them ready and prepped for battle under a few hoursHe grunted as a vampire sank his fang into his arm. He growled grabbed the vampire by its head and slammed it into the ground."Keep your head in the fight, Mitch," Draco snapped. "Don't die when she is just a few feet away."Mitch chuckled. He turned and looked at his mate again. She was holding her own well against the vampires surrounding her and Alphonso."Do these things ever finish?" Mitch asked, looking around at the vampires still swarming over the field."We have to take out the elder vampires, or Vladimir himself," Draco said, stabbing a vampire dead on the floor. He shook his spear loose and lo

I saw Lorna clench her jaws in pain as Agatha squeezed her blood into a cup, which she mixed with some herbs and gave to Vladimir. He drank it all in one gulp. Dark red veins streaked up his neck, and his eyes went bloodshot. She walked to me and added, “I will offer the life of the reincarnated grand witch, Annika, and use it to bind the soul of the vampire king, giving him immense power and immunity to the mountain ash wood…““I heard her raise her hand. The air stretched with tension, and time seemed to slow down. I opened my eyes, expecting to see my life flash before my eyes, bu

ANNA KYLIN CHESTER“COME HERE!“ THE grating of the cell on its hinges made me look up. One of the vampires was on the other side. She reached in and pulled me out harshly. My knees scraped the rough floor; I bit my lips to keep the pain in. Another one reached in and tried to grab Lorna but gasped in pain, pulling back immediately. “I will come out myself,“ Lorna said coolly. “But try to touch me again, and it will be the last thing you ever do.“ The vampire stared daggers at her but did not move to grab her again. She cradled her hand, rubbing it fondly. Lorna must have secured herself with some sort of spell. “And you will unhand the Luna immediately too.“ Lorna said in a cold voice to the vampire who had her fingers wrapped tightly on my upper arm. The vampire looked uncertain, but she saw the cold and threatening look on Lorna's face. I was also shocked, but it did the trick. The vampire released me. “Where are we going?“ Lorna asked, but I could guess already. “It is time for

THE FIGHT WAS OVER almost as quickly as it started. We did not stand a chance against Vladimir and he was already getting empowered by the forthcoming blood moon. Lorna was sprawled on the floor, blood seeped from her mouth and her back was twisted in an unnatural angle. I was on my feet, but it was threatening to give way any second. And Vladimir? He did look like he had done anything. No sweat. No hair out of place. He had his sinister smile plastered on his face as he walked towards me. He stopped a few feet away and brushed my cheek with his icy-cold fingers. “Your last few hours should have been enjoyable, Annika.“ he said softly. “But instead, you let that witch,“ he turned and looked at Lorna before he continued, “...to spoil it. Tch.“ she chuffed and walked away. “It is back to square one now.“The woods around were suddenly alive, and things moved in the shadows. ANNA KYLIN CHESTERI SAT UP in my bed, my heart was racing, and adrenaline surged as my wolf leaped to the surface, enhancing my vision, but I could not still make out the shape of the person in my room. I was about to jump through the door, not minding that I would alert the whole mansion, but I felt a pair of fingers wrap around my upper arm. Gasping in shock, I turned sharply, trying to wrestle my arm away from the stranger's grip, but to no avail. I am being attacked by two people, I thought anxiously to myself. I started to yell, but the person holding me stepped out of the shadows and my scream died in my throat."Lorna?!" I gaped. She put a finger to her lip to keep me silent. Then she cocked her head. I swung my legs out of the bed. My mind was spinning with imagination. I still felt like I was in a dream. I reached out and touched her. She was real."Quickly," she said to me. She muttered some words under her breath and the lock in the door snapped apart. The door opened

She might be out of the kingdom now.“ Mitch growled. “Just tell them to search.“ “We should probably get back,“ Draco said, turning to look around. Mitch nodded. He looked at Vorenus. Draco could see the hesitation in Mitch's body language. He knew what mitch was about to do. He dipped his hand into his pocket and tossed a small object at Vorenus who caught it easily, confused at what it was. Suddenly there was a sizzling sound and vorenus dropped the object quickly. The smell of burnt flesh filled the air and Drcao nodded in satisfaction. “What was that?“ Vorenus growled. “Silver, “Draco said. “Silver bullets. He had no doubts that it was because his mate was still out there in danger, his son was lying in bed, unconscious and blind, and his kingdom was on the brink of civil war.He paced the length of the room anxiously, his eyes drifting into the dancing fireplace as he walked past. A small knock came at the door. “Come in,“ he called. The door opened, and Draco came in. He took a look around the small, almost empty room and shook his head, saying, “You are still sleeping here.“Mitch chuffed and nodded, “I can't stay in the master chambers alone. Anna should be with me.“Draco nodded and said, “I understand that, but…“ He looked around again. “I am sure you can do better than a tiny room. There is even no air conditon -““No one uses air conditioning here, Draco,“ Mitch said. He sat on the bed heavily; it creaked under his weight.“There is no ventilation,“ Draco continued,
