(Hilda)

Arlo spins me around, his eyes blazing with a mixture of anger and betrayal. “After last night and this morning, is this honestly what you want?”

I bite back a sob, trying to summon the strength to defy him. “Let me go, Arlo. I don’t belong to you.” His grip tightens as he shakes his head slowly. “You belong with me. We’re bonded, Hilda. You can’t deny what’s between us.”

“Bonded?” I hiss, “Or trapped?” His eyes narrow, and a dangerous edge creeps into his voice. “If you were trapped I’d hardly be finding you all the way out here, now would I? Why are you running, Hilda? Or should the question be, who are you running to?”

“Nobody,” I insist, my voice hoarse. “I don’t have anybody to run to, Arlo. I just want to be free and away from everyone and everything that can hurt me.”

A flicker of doubt crosses his features, but it’s quickly replaced by suspicion. “Do you think I’m a fool? I know about Soren.”

“Soren?” I echo, genuinely confused. “What does he have to do with this?

I feel sorry for Hilda. Siren was do anxious to get a luna, he couldn't wait a little bit longer. I get that it was a year, but he didn't think about how it would hurt her to give her to the enemy turned ally. I hope he and Cerelua will never be happy.

(Hilda)Standing at the edge of the training grounds, I watch the warriors go through their drills. The sight should bring me comfort, seeing as it’s something familiar in this sea of uncertainty. Instead, it only reminds me of what I’ve lost, and what I’m striving to regain - my sense of purpose and my place in the world. I have to get my strength and confidence back, and this is the only way I know how.Arlo’s pack’s different from Soren’s. The warriors move with a fluidity that speaks of years of disciplined training, but there’s an underlying tension in the air. Right now I need to keep my head down and focus on what I can control.I approached Arlo earlier, my mind finally made up. “I want to stay,” I told him, meeting his piercing gaze head-on. “But as a warrior for now, not as your mate. I need to find myself again before I can even think about being in a relationship.” “You think you can just decide that?” he asked irritably. His voice was low, with a dangerous edge to it. “

(Hilda) The early morning rays of the sun is just starting to cast shadows on the training grounds when I arrive.I notice immediately that Arlo’s already there, deep in conversation with Percy. As if his size isn’t enough to make him an imposing figure, there’s also the raw power he exudes. I swear I’d be able to sense his presence from a mile away.As always, seeing him fills me with clashing emotions. A confusing blend of gratitude and resentment. He’s been nothing but kind to me, but his constant presence is both a comfort and a reminder of my unresolved feelings. It’s easier to breathe when he’s not around.Falling asleep in his arms last night was a torturous blessing. I’d spent long minutes feeling jittery with anticipation, more than half certain he’d make some kind of move. When I finally realized he was really just going to hold me, I fell asleep quickly, feeling more than a little bereft.I have to tune out the noise in my head and focus on my training and nothing else tod

(Soren)The camp is a flurry of activity when I get back, my mind still reeling from the encounter with King Arlo and Hilda. My heart aches at the memory of Hilda’s words and her obvious pain.As I approach the edge of our camp, I see Cerelia waiting for me, her eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Where have you been?" she demands, crossing her arms over her chest defensively."King Arlo summoned me," I reply, trying to keep my voice calm as I explain my absence. "He wanted to talk about Hilda." Cerelia's eyes flash with anger. "Hilda again? What does she have to do with us?""Nothing," I say firmly. "King Arlo's just being paranoid. He thought I was trying to take her back." Cerelia's expression softens slightly, but her eyes still hold a hint of doubt. "Are you?" she asks uncertainly."No," I tell her, shaking my head. "Hilda and I are over. I'm with you now, Cerelia. I made that clear to King Arlo and to Hilda." Of course I don’t add how awful that made me feel. She turns to walk away, bu

(Hilda)My days are filled with a newfound sense of purpose and I immerse myself in training and the packs’ daily activities, striving to carve out my place among them.Arlo is joining our training sessions as frequently as his duties will allow it and there’s no denying the effect his presence has on me. He seems to draw my eyes like a magnet and send my body heat soaring like he’s my own personal heatwave. Worst of all, he seems to know exactly how much his presence affects me, judging by the swagger in his walk whenever he catches me gazing at him.Thank goodness for Percy’s friendship. As determined as I am to guard myself from being hurt again, I haven’t been able to resist letting my guard down around him. Soren isn’t the only person responsible for breaking my heart. Alec’s betrayal hurt nearly as much and I keep telling myself I should be wary of trusting in anyone at all.I’m not made for solitude though and compared to the blistering effect Arlo’s presence has on me, spendin

(Hilda)I can’t sleep and I’m sick of tossing and turning as I replay the conversation I had with Arlo earlier. I can’t deny the frisson of excitement I feel every time he says I’m his, but I’m not about to let him think he can order me around. On top of that, I suspect Percy’s been avoiding me today and that can only mean Arlo had a word with him.I’ve been lying here, hoping he’d come to my room to say goodnight, as he does most nights, but it seems I’m not the only one feeling a little grumpy after our talk.Fine. If he won’t come here, I’ll go to him. I’m not a ‘wait and see’ kind of girl. Taking the bull by the horns is usually far quicker and less traumatic in the long-run.When I reach his door, I hesitate for a moment, gathering my thoughts before knocking. I know exactly what I want to tell him, I just need to make sure the brain fog he always seems to inspire doesn’t get me."Arlo, it's me," I call out when I’m met with a terse, “Go away, I don’t need anything.” We’ll have t

(Soren)The camp is shrouded in early morning mist when I wake up, the remnants of a restless night lingering in my mind. I can feel the heavy sense of anticipation hanging in the air and I know Damon’s been talking to the warriors.I find Cerelia waiting for me in the kitchen, her eyes reflecting a mixture of determination and worry. "We need to talk," she tells me, her voice low but firm. In a camp full of werewolves, it’s not always easy to keep things to yourself."Soren, we need to discuss Hilda," she says, her tone leaving no room for argument. "We can't ignore the fact that she holds valuable information. If you’re going to challenge King Arlo, we need every advantage we can get. I don’t want you walking into danger if she can help keep you safe."I hesitate, the thought of involving Hilda stirring a mix of emotions within me. "Cerelia, I don't know if that's a good idea. Hilda's already caught in the middle of this mess. Dragging her deeper into our plans could put her at even

(Hilda)I wake up to the first rays of dawn filtering through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the room. Arlo’s arm is draped possessively over me, his breathing steady and calm. Last night's intense emotions has given way to a quiet intimacy, and for a moment, I feel a sense of peace.Unfortunately I can’t stay in bed forever; there’s a whole new world waiting for me outside. I carefully scoot out from under Arlo's arm, doing my best not to wake him as I dress quickly and quietly, taking a moment to watch him sleep before stepping out into the hallway. The pack house is already bustling with activity. I follow my nose to the main hall, where the enticing smell of freshly baked bread and brewing coffee is wafting from. A few pack members are seated at the long wooden tables, enjoying their breakfast. My heart sings when they greet me warmly, their smiles genuine."Good morning, Luna," a young woman says affably, her eyes shining with warmth. "Would you like to join us for brea

(Soren)Cerelia’s words about using Hilda as a spy is playing on repeat in my mind as I move through the dense forest, each step careful and calculated. Early morning mist clings to the ground, adding an eerie quality to the already tense atmosphere.I hate the thought of putting Hilda directly in the path of danger, but Cerelia’s right. In the end, I may need her help in order to save her. I’ve been fruitlessly attempting to mind link Hilda, to no avail. Our bond is well and truly severed and she’s no longer a member of my pack.We need her inside knowledge, which will mean finding someone loyal to King Arlo, who could be bribed, or convinced by some other means, to carry a message to her. My search doesn’t last long. The snap of a twig alerts me to the fact that there’s someone close by. Crouching low, I move stealthily towards the sound. Peering through the underbrush, I see him. One of King Arlo's men, a scout named Rolf. He’s young, barely old enough to be a guard and his nervou

Tara The sun creeps through the motel blinds like it’s got something to be smug about. I squint against the glare, the cotton in my mouth reminding me that maybe two glasses of wine, drunk at speed, were a tactical error. My head’s not splitting, but it’s definitely letting me know I made bad choices last night. Ash isn’t in the room.He waltzes in as if on cue, looking infuriatingly perfect. Crisp black shirt, sleeves rolled to the elbows, hair tousled in a way that’s definitely on purpose. He carries a bag in one hand, coffee in the other."You drool when you sleep," he says, placing a cup on the nightstand beside me. "I do not,” I argue. "You do. Adorably, I might add. Like a baby dragon."I sit up, snatch the coffee, and take a sip. Milk, no sugar. He knows how I take it, which should not make me feel all glowy."What’s in the bag?" He grins, wicked and self-satisfied, and holds it up with a flourish. "Your costume for tonight’s return engagement."I take it with more suspicion t

AshThe wine bottle is empty and Tara’s cheeks are glowing like she’s been kissed by the sun. She’s blinking slowly, caught between tipsy and overwhelmed, and I decide that’s our cue.I stand without preamble, smiling suavely at our companions. "We should be heading out," I say with a smile that toes the line between polite and possessive. "My sister isn’t used to these late nights."Tara’s eyes go wide, the perfect doe-in-headlights look, and I almost laugh. The table protests in a flurry of disappointed sighs and offers of more drinks. One man in particular looks personally offended that she’s leaving before he’s managed to charm the dress off her.She waves a hand, pink in the face. "I’m just not much of a drinker," she says apologetically, which is technically true, though I’d categorize her performance tonight as impressively reckless."We may stop by again tomorrow," I offer smoothly. I make sure to catch the eye of the man who’s been lurking at the edge of the crowd. He’s the q

TaraThe moment we step into Amber’s, every instinct I have goes on high alert. It's subtle, but unmistakable, a lull in conversation, the way heads pivot just a fraction too long. I feel eyes on us, and not in a friendly, welcome-to-the-neighborhood kind of way.Ash, of course, looks like he belongs on the cover of some luxury lifestyle magazine. Effortless. Debauched. Smug. The smirk he slides across the room is pure velvet, the kind that says, I own this place, you just don’t know it yet.“Relax, little dove,” he murmurs, brushing close enough that his breath grazes my ear. “You look like someone’s about to stab you.”“Maybe because that’s entirely possible,” I whisper back, eyes scanning the room. He chuckles, a low, dark sound that has no business being this comforting, and wraps his arm loosely around my waist.“Just lean into it,” he says smoothly. “You look like a queen, now act like it.”Easy for him to say. The room is a cocoon of decadence. Leather chairs that look too expe

AshThe sun is barely up when I jostle Tara awake, grinning as she groans and buries her face in the pillow. "Get up. We’ve got things to do."She swats at me blindly. "You’re insufferable. It’s too early. Go away." I chuckle, pulling the blanket off her. "Nonsense. It’s the perfect time to go shopping." That gets her attention. She lifts her head, bleary-eyed and scowling. "We don’t have money to waste and you don’t need more clothes."I wave a dismissive hand. "It’s not wasting, it’s investing and we’re going shopping for you. If we’re going to Amber’s tonight, you need to look the part. There’s nothing in your pack that would pass muster at an upmarket establishment. Or anywhere else for that matter. Your clothes should be deemed a crime against fashion."Tara groans, flopping back onto the bed. "Shouldn’t you have a hangover? It’s unnatural to have drunk as much whiskey as you did last night and not suffer for it.""It’s because I was made for debauchery," I say with a smirk. "My

She’s breathtaking, and for a moment I just gaze at her, memorizing the way she looks at me.Want curls through me and I lean over to kiss her. “I have the loveliest mate in the world,” I murmur. She smiles softly, “I think you’re probably a little biased,” she teases.I dip my head to trail kisses down her neck, nuzzling her soft skin and drinking in the sighs of pleasure she offers me in return. My lips slowly trail along her collarbone, while my hands skim down her sides, thumbs brushing along the swell of her breasts. She hums in response, her hands sliding up my back, fingertips tracing the lines of my muscles.Everything about her is gentle and warm and my body responds to every soft sigh and tremor. Her hands frame my face, guiding me into a kiss that’s both sweet and deep, filled with the promise of forever. When we break apart, her gaze locks onto mine,

CereliaThe morning sun filters through the trees, golden streaks painting the forest floor as Scarlett tugs eagerly at my hand. “Come on, Auntie Cerelia! We have to go this way.” Her little feet dance across the mossy ground as she leads me toward the creek.I chuckle, letting her take the lead. As we walk, she chatters non-stop, her small hands waving expressively as words tumble from her mouth.“Did you know Daddy sleeps like a starfish? Mommy says he takes up the whole bed, but he says it’s because he has to be prepared for danger at all times.” She pauses, eyes thoughtful. “But I don’t think that’s true because I poked him the other night, and he didn’t move at all.”I laugh. “Maybe he was too tired to be on high alert.” Scarlett shrugs. “Maybe. Mommy woke up though and took me back to bed. She said I should let the poor man rest. One female in the house sapping his energy is enough.”I laugh softly, “I guess she’s right.” Scarlett nods, “Mommy can be bossy,” she shares, giving m

AshThe moment we step into the city streets, I stretch my arms above my head and breathe in deeply. “Ah, civilization. How I’ve missed you.”Beside me, Tara wrinkles her nose. “It smells like urine and rotten vegetables, I can’t see how anyone could miss a stench like that.”I shrug. “That’s simply the aroma of this part of the city, you’ll get used to it. We need to start looking in the underbelly for what we need and work our way up from there.”She doesn’t look convinced, but she follows me anyway as I scout for the busiest bar. The more people, the more loose tongues. Finally, I spot a place bursting with noise and dim, flickering lights, and I pull her inside. The music is loud, the air thick with sweat and stale alcohol. I order a whiskey for myself and a glass of wine for Tara, nudging her toward the barstool beside me. She takes a sip, immediately grimacing.“Ugh,” she mutters. “This tastes like vinegar. She trusts me to play spy, keep Ash in line and help her find Malcolm. That belief alone makes this worth it. Now we have to talk to Scarlett. If she says no, then Ash won’t be going anywhere. Even if he wants to.Hilda explains to Scarlett what she wants us to do and I hold my breath, hoping this expedition won’t be cancelled before it’s begun.“I don’t know how long they’ll be gone, sweetheart. HildaWe need eyes in the city. I pace the length of the room, arms folded tight, trying to think through the problem. Malcolm is out there somewhere, licking his wounds and plotting his next move. And we have no idea where he went.I need to find him and show him what happens when he harms my mate and threatens our pack. Which means we need information. Desperately.“The best option is sending scouts into the city again,” I say, glancing at Arlo. “See if anyone’s talking. If Malcolm left a mess behind, someone will be cleaning it up. We decimated his forces and he’ll need to find new men. I doubt he’s given up on his plans.”Arlo’s fists clench at my words. He told me about the things Malcolm said to bait him. Apparently he no longer only wants dead wolves and land, he wants sex pets too. I really need to find the bastard.“Percy and Nixie can’t go again, they’ll be recognized. Same goes for you, me, Soren, and Cerelia. So who do we send that won’t stand out?”We fall into silence,
