Chapter Twenty Nine : A Deal for My Mate

Cara's POV

My stomach growled as I walked down the hall, towards the kitchen. I was exhausted from everything that had happened, and all I wanted was a warm meal and some peace.

The house was quiet, the air still. It was a strange kind of quiet, the kind that precedes a storm.

As I neared the kitchen, I was just going to enter when I heard a voice I recognized.

Vanessa.

I stopped, my hand mid-air before I opened the door.

Her voice was smooth, confident—perhaps too confident.

Something in her tone made me hesitate. Instead of entering, I stepped back, pressing myself against the wall and listening.

"Luna, you know how much I respect Liam. He deserves a strong partner beside him. Someone like me."

I frowned.

What was she up to?

Luna sighed. "Vanessa, I already said, this is not my choice to make. Liam will select his own mate."

"But why should he pick someone weak?" Vanessa insisted. "Cara doesn't have a powerful lineage. She has no powers. She

Cara had been through too much, and I was taking no chances."She can't go anywhere alone," I said emphatically, my voice not open to discussion. "At least three of you must follow her everywhere she goes."The men nodded, their faces grave."She might not like it," one of them, Marcus, spoke up."I don't care," I replied. "This doesn't have anything to do with what she likes. This is about keeping her safe."No sooner had I spoken than the door swung open.Luna Mariana, my mother, stood in the doorway. Her face was impassive, but her eyes—there was something in her eyes, something that twisted my gut."Liam," she said, her voice steady but commanding. "Come with me. You need to see something."I frowned. "What is it?""Just come with me," she said.I paused. Something was not right, but this was my mother. I trust

My heart pounded in my chest as I scooped her up into my arms. All my doubts, all the accusations, everything disappeared in that moment. Nothing mattered except getting her help.“She’s faking it,” my mother spat, folding her arms. “Don’t fall for her tricks, Liam.”“She’s not faking it!” Sophia snapped, kneeling beside me. “Can’t you see she’s sick?”Vanessa scoffed. “Sick or not, she doesn’t belong here. Vanessa followed closely behind, satisfaction clear in her eyes.Sophia was the only one who looked furious. She walked beside Cara, her hand gripping Cara’s arm, as if she was afraid she would collapse.Cara, on the other hand, looked numb. Her face was pale, her lips slightly parted, and her eyes were swollen from crying. She didn’t try to wipe her tears anymore. She just walked, silent and broken. And I forced myself not to care.I clenched my jaw and reminded myself that I was doing what was best for the pack. When we arrived at the packhouse, the entire pack had gathered. Chapter 105: Cara's POV – The Unexpected SightI had been pacing around the packhouse, trying to cool my head. It had been days since I'd spoken with Damon. Ever since the evening he'd betrayed me, I couldn't seem to handle him. And now, even Sophia, she wasn't even staring at me in the same way anymore. There was tension among us all.But that was something to worry about another time. There was something that worried me much more. I had to keep Damon away from Sophia. I had to tear them apart, destroy what was between them. That was my plan. That was my plan since the first time I'd seen them together, but deep within me lay something that had it set upon making it become a reality.I returned towards the living room, the part of the packhouse where individuals typically gather. But when I drew near, I stopped. I overheard the laughter and became frozen.I did not anticipate this. Not at all.I looked out the window, and there they were. Damon and Sophia. Sitting together. Laughing.

The tension between Sophia and me had been mounting for days now, and despite how much I fought it, it seemed like the distance between us continued to widen. The things I'd shared with her, the truth about what transpired with Cara—it was just too much for her to process. I had expected her to be furious, but I could never imagine that it would be like she was escaping me, step by step.I stumbled through the packhouse, my feet heavy on the ground, my mind spinning. I hadn't talked to Sophia since I'd told her Cara was dead. Since then, she'd barely even looked at me. When she did, her eyes were full of hurt, betrayal… and something else I couldn't quite pinpoint. My heart pounded harder.I hadn't even noticed how long I had been sitting there. Maybe hours. All of it weighed on me. I had a plan.I surveyed the room, my eyes locking onto the door. Damon was in the adjacent room. Sophia had gone off to visit her parents, and I was left alone with him. I had been waiting for this opportunity—the ultimate opportunity. This was my moment to at last get what I wanted. I was pregnant with Liam's child, but no one knew that. Everyone thought the baby was Damon's. That was my chance to reclaim Damon, to have him back for myself.I couldn't help but smile to myself, imagining. This would be okay.
