Chapter 5

Author: Cloud Drop
Liesel looked at Jacob. Her tone was calm as she said, "I don't owe Natalie anything, nor do I owe you. Work-wise, I'm only her senior. Regarding my personal life, my mother didn't owe her anything.

"Natalie came knocking on our door when her mother chose to marry another. No woman can accept her husband's illegitimate daughter. She might have had Natalie sent to the countryside, but Natalie was also given more than enough money to survive there.

"I don't owe her, whether professionally or personally. Why should I be more accommodating and tolerant of her? Why should I back down when facing off against her?"

When she finished her speech, silence descended upon the car. Jacob looked at her. She wore a simple dress that clung to her curves, and her delicate features were arranged into her usual mask of aloofness.

There was something cold and tenacious about her. She was so brilliant that one could almost neglect her beauty.

His gaze flitted over her eyes. After a moment of silence, he said gently, "I'm sorry. I didn't handle this matter appropriately."

Liesel didn't say anything. He looked her in the eye and said, "I shouldn't have made you suppress yourself and back down for Natalie's sake. You're a wonderful woman, Liesel. Even though we're divorced now, I still hope you'll live your own life."

She clenched her fists and tried to keep her tears at bay. She couldn't deny that she really, really liked Jacob. However, certain things just couldn't be forced.

Liesel headed home. She had someone ask around about the doctor Jacob was going to arrange to examine her. Meanwhile, Chelsea was worried. "Can't you just tell him the truth? He might not be that cruel. You two were together for three years, after all."

"I'd rather not." Liesel caressed her belly. She was silent for a while before saying, "Since I can't abort the child, there's no need to let Jacob know about this. We're already divorced, and this child is part of my life now. I'll need your help dealing with the doctor."

Whatever it was, she couldn't let Jacob find out about the baby.

Chelsea didn't object. She seemed to think of something and said, "Natalie used to intern at Shifter Corporation. Do you think it's just a coincidence, or does she know something?"

This came as a surprise to Liesel. Natalie had interned at Shifter Corporation? Did she know it belonged to Liesel, or…

It piqued Liesel's suspicions, but she didn't dwell on the matter. "It's probably just a coincidence. She graduated from Alden University, and Shifter Corporation does campus recruitments there, too."

Chelsea had only brought it up since it had occurred to her. She smiled and said, "Mr. Shifter and Neal should be back soon, right? I'm sure you'll feel more secure with them around."

Neal Shifter was Jonathan's son, and the Shifter family had been managing Shifter Corporation on Liesel's behalf all these years. Since Heather's passing, the Shifters had become like family to Liesel.

She smiled, and a rare hint of relief flashed in her eyes.

The following day, news of Uriah's downfall broke out. Elijah looked like a dandy playboy but had surprisingly ruthless methods.

He'd gotten someone to leak information on the dirty tricks Uriah had pulled to the paparazzi. Coincidentally, Uriah had recently killed someone while driving under the influence and had gotten a scapegoat to take the fall. Thanks to everything being lumped together, he was soon arrested.

Elijah had proper quality stocks delivered to Ford Corporation in exchange for the subpar stocks. When Liesel went to handle the handover, he watched her with interest.

"Don't you trust me, Ms. Sharp?" He raised an eyebrow and eyed the light sheen of sweat at her temples. His gaze turned pointed.

She smiled and blinked at him. "I wouldn't put it that way. Better safe than sorry, right?"

Her smile and rare moment of slyness made her glow. Her eyes were so bright.

Elijah smirked at the sight. It looked like the rumors about her couldn't be trusted at all. She was much more interesting than those naive young women.

Jacob and Natalie happened to see this. Natalie approached with a smile and said, "You and Ms. Liesel seem to get along very well, Mr. Hardin. It looks like this matter was a blessing in disguise."

Her tone was light-hearted and lively, which carried a hint of a young woman's naivety and cheer. Her words made one's imagination wander, though. It was as if Liesel and Elijah were more involved than they seemed.

Jacob's expression darkened when he took in the smile on Liesel's face. Then, he said coolly, "Sorry to have troubled you over this, Mr. Hardin."

"Oh, it was no trouble at all." Elijah smiled meaningfully. "Nothing is considered troublesome when I have someone as gorgeous as Ms. Liesel attending to me."

"Ms. Liesel has always drawn a clear line between work and pleasure. You might have gotten the wrong idea, Mr. Hardin." Jacob's gaze flitted over Liesel.

Elijah's smile widened. "Drawing a clear line between work and pleasure isn't the same as being heartless. One has to be thick-skinned when pursuing a woman, right? Or are you interfering in your employee's personal life, Mr. Ford?"

Jacob faltered. Then, he said, "I'll leave you to it, Mr. Hardin."

He turned and left with Natalie in tow. Liesel watched them. Her gaze was aloof. However, Elijah saw the glumness deep inside. He said, "Your precious Mr. Ford isn't all that great. Why don't you consider other fish in the sea?"

There was a hint of amorosity to his words. Liesel returned to her senses and chuckled. "I remember you saying that I'm not your type, Mr. Hardin. Have you changed your mind?"

Elijah looked at her. If he had to be honest, she was too stubborn and inflexible for his tastes. She was indeed not his type. Yet she was pretty and intelligent enough to mask her inflexibility.

"Not really." He leaned closer. "But I'll make an exception for you. You should really consider my proposal."

Liesel didn't take his words to heart. She was just glad she'd managed to resolve the stock problem and prevent Ford Corporation from suffering any losses.

Jacob punished Natalie by docking three months of her pay and bonuses. Then, he paid Liesel double her salary.

The colleagues in Liesel's department were pleased when she returned.

"I'll admit it—I can't stand those who got in here because of their connections. Anyone else would've been fired ages ago."

"I know, right? She's supposed to have graduated from Alden University, yet she made such a huge mistake immediately after taking over as Mr. Ford's secretary. Even if we were to talk about looks alone, it's not like she can compare with Ms. Sharp! I wonder what Mr. Ford sees in her…"

Ford Corporation was one of the biggest in the industry, so it was harder for rookies to find their footing there compared to other companies. Their situation would only be worse if they didn't have the skills to back themselves up.

It wasn't appropriate for Liesel to comment on the subject, but she knew it wasn't right to pick on Natalie like that.

"Stop." She could feel a headache coming on as she stopped the gossip. "She's just a young woman who's new to this. You guys should focus on your work. I'll treat everyone to a nice meal in a couple of days, okay?"

Only then did the crowd zip their lips and get back to work.

Liesel needed to hand a contract to Jacob now that she was done with the matter with Hardin Corporation. She headed to his office and was about to knock when she heard Natalie's voice.

Inside the room, Natalie bit her lip. Her eyes were red as she said, "I'm too useless, aren't I, Jake? Everyone says I can't compare to Ms. Liesel."

Jacob frowned, and a hint of displeasure flashed in his eyes. He wiped her tears and said, "What's the point of comparing yourself to her? You two aren't the same."

Liesel faltered outside the door. She only pushed it open after a beat.

"Mr. Ford, this is the latest document from Mr. Hardin."Liesel pushed open the door and entered. Her expression was calm and composed as her gaze swept past Natalie. She placed a printed document on Jacob's desk.It was a new contract. It was the new contract that Elijah had proposed.Elijah was someone who thought long and hard about things. Yet, he was now casually proposing a subsequent collaboration, as if he had set his sights on something and was certain that he would get it.Jacob frowned slightly, and his gaze slowly landed on Liesel. At work, she was always dressed in a pencil skirt. Her waist was slim and dainty, yet it gave off a feeling of tenacity. Her delicate and stunning features carried a hint of unapproachability, reminiscent of an edelweiss at the peak of a snowy mountain. She was cold and beautiful. The reason why Elijah had suggested they collaborate was most likely because he had his eyes on her."Elijah is trying to court you," Jacob said in a neutral

If the Ford Corporation's secrets got leaked, the penalty fee had to be exorbitant. The security guard tensed. Returning to his senses, he tried to chase Natalie out of the room. However, Natalie was one step faster. She ran up to Liesel into the meeting room. She widened her round, doe eyes, which gave off an illusion of innocence and harmlessness."As my sister, you can't do this to me, Liesel," she said. She made it sound as if Liesel had just committed a grave mistake.Sister? That was ridiculous. In what way could she be considered Natalie's sister? It was all thanks to Natalie's ability to put on an innocent expression and her calling Liesel her sister in such a pitiful tone."Natalie, my mother only has one child. I'm not worthy of being called your sister," Liesel said indifferently. "The project department is having a meeting today. If there's nothing urgent, then please leave, Ms. Natalie. Don't disrupt our work.""Liesel, I'm not here to disrupt your work. I came he

In his other hand, the delivery man held an openwork jewelry box made of rosewood. There were carvings of doves on the outer surface. It looked very delicate and luxurious.Inside the wooden box was a red agate necklace. Its crimson color was bright and eye-catching. The moment one laid eyes on it, they could not look away. There was a sticky note inside the box. On it, there was a line of elegant writing. "May you be like the rising sun on a winter morning, shining radiantly with immense brilliance."It was signed "Elijah Hardin."Liesel was taken aback.Neither the jewelry nor the flowers captured her attention. Her gaze was fixed only on the accompanying sticky note, like this piece of paper was the actual surprise.Elijah hadn't made a mistake. Liesel wasn't a cold and icy person. She harbored a burning and sincere affection inside of her. She wasn't the snow that gathered on the peak of the towering snowy mountains, nor was she a precious and untouchable flower. She was pr

Liesel was truly beautiful. With delicate facial features complemented by striking eyes, there was a coldness and emptiness to her.The red agate necklace brought out the radiance in her eyes.As she smiled, she didn't seem like her cold self from the past. Instead, she seemed more easygoing."Do I look beautiful with this necklace on?" Liesel asked. Her long fingers gently caressed the heavy and expensive red agate stone weighing on her neck.Jacob's eyes turned stormy. "Liesel, it doesn't suit you."If it didn't suit her, then what did?Liesel's smile broadened. She grinned at him. "It doesn't matter whether it suits me or not as long as I like it."Although she was saying that she liked the red agate necklace, it sounded to Jacob that she was saying that she liked Elijah instead.Liesel took out her phone to take a photo of herself.Perhaps it was because of how close the camera was, but the picture seemed a bit fuzzy.Even though it had been taken without any filters, sh

Seeing that Liesel looked like she was about to raise her hackles, Elijah was somehow reminded of wild black-footed cats. They were unrestrained but packed a strong punch"Have a look at this. Elijah handed a document to Liesel. After merely taking a glance, Liesel looked up to see Elijah cocking his head at her and signaling her to continue reading.Liesel looked down again. However, on the inside, she was once again shocked by his innovation. He was actually thinking of conducting research in the field of holography. This type of research was very expensive."Mr. Hardin, if I'm not wrong, an even more skilled team overseas had actually begun researching this six years ago. However, till today, all they have come up with is 3D projection.""Don't you want innovation, Ms. Sharp?" Elijah asked."Innovation is one thing, but having self-awareness is another."If I may ask, do you have a specialized research team, Mr. Hardin?"Do you k

Liesel glanced out the window, then back inside the car, and finally realized something was wrong. The things she had left behind were gone. Thanks to Vincent, she often rode in Jacob's car during the past three years. Over time, her presence had left a mark inside. But now, her plushie and jasmine-scented air freshener were missing. They were suddenly erased from his life, just like she had been.Noticing Liesel's gaze, Natalie spoke up with a hint of regret in her voice. "Liesel, I'm sorry. There were a lot of your things in here, but I didn't like the jasmine scent, so I had Jake change it."As for the plushie… Well, I accidentally got it dirty. I had no choice but to throw it away. I hope you don't mind, Liesel. After all, Jake couldn't really keep something dirty, right?"Natalie didn't like the jasmine scent, so she had it replaced with one she preferred. Wasn't that exactly what Jacob was doing to her? And as for that "dirty" doll, wasn't it a metaphor for her?Because of

Liesel almost felt like laughing when she heard Jacob's words. She had always known that he was extremely possessive. Even after their marriage had fallen apart, he wouldn't tolerate another man near her.Back then, she would go out of her way to please him by being gentle and thoughtful. She would always avoid any noticeable interaction with other men.But now, they were divorced. So what right did Jacob have to demand she remove the necklace? What gave an ex-husband the authority to tell his ex-wife to take off a necklace given by an admirer?Liesel looked up at Jacob. Her gaze, which was usually indifferent, now carried a fleeting hint of amusement. She simply stared at him calmly and asked, "Why should I take off the necklace?"She gently played with the expensive red agate necklace around her neck as she continued, "Don't you think it suits me?"Indeed, it did. Red was her color as compared to the calm, cold blue. She was far more suited to the bold, fiery intensity of red,

"Girls shouldn't wear formal attire every day." Vincent stated firmly. His words were quick and decisive. "No more delays. Tomorrow, take Lili to the store and let her pick out a few outfits."Jacob paused and was just about to politely decline, but Liesel smiled and shook her head gently. "Grandpa, I have work to deal with tomorrow," she said.Jacob was surprised that Liesel had turned down the offer first. His gaze darkened slightly, and he said, "Work can wait. Tomorrow, I'm taking you to Heffings to buy clothes."Heffings was a high-end luxury brand owned by Ford Corporation, with stores among the top-ranked globally. Many celebrities frequented there for custom-made clothes.Truly wealthy individuals, however, never went to such stores; they would receive photos of the latest collections and either reserve items or have them delivered directly to their homes.Since Vincent had spoken, Jacob didn't mind accompanying Liesel this time.Meanwhile, Liesel was momentarily dumbfo

"Do you not want to hug?" Liesel cocked her head at him. "Don't think I don't know you. I bet you already wanted to kiss me and hold me the moment you spotted Jacob. Otherwise, you wouldn't have tightened your arms around me."Hadn't Elijah done that to send Jacob a message that Liesel belonged to him?Having been together for so long, there wasn't anything that she didn't understand about him."In that case, thank you for giving me a chance and playing along." Since he couldn't think of an excuse, he just came clean. There was even a look of amusement on his face.He pulled her into his arms affectionately. She also hugged him back, like she was a child staking her territory."Should we add some more spice and kiss?"This was really becoming more and more provocative. Why not?A smile appeared on Elijah's face, as if he was saying to her, "Bring it on."And she did. From a short distance away, Jacob could see Elijah's arm curled around Liesel's tiny waist. She seemed very dependent on him as she lay in his arms listlessly. It was a stark contrast to the way she behaved in public with other people.Whether it was with reporters or business partners, she always seemed like a steady pillar of strength. She was graceful and calm, but there was a hidden sharpness within her.Anyone who interacted with her could feel the hidden threat that was lurking inside of her.Yet, the Liesel now seemed to have shed all the sharp spikes on her body, revealing only the soft insides. Then, he'd definitely have someone clean you up nicely and send you straight into my bed."He lifted her chin with his finger. "Do you think that your husband is a decent man? Do you think that he'd disobey me for you?"Liesel swallowed. She was enraptured by the look in Elijah's eyes right now.He nibbled on her ear while patting her panicked and pale face. "If you're obedient, I'll treat you well. If you're unwilling to play along and make me happy, I'll kill your husband and lock you up in my home. You'll never see the light of day again."Stripping off her clothes, Liesel bit his earlobe and whispered, "It's such a waste that you didn't go into the acting industry with Chelsea."Elijah chuckled quietly, letting her hands roam all over him. They left a trail of fire in their wake. When he was all riled up and ready to go, Liesel suddenly hugg

However, she didn't even stop and simply walked out.He trailed after her leisurely until she was nearly out of Ford Corporation. Just as he was about to call out to her, he heard a cheerful, gentle voice calling her name."Lili, I'm here to pick you up." Jacob's eyes darkened. When he looked up, he saw Elijah sitting in a wheelchair and smiling at Liesel.Liesel didn't mind at all that he was a cripple. With a grin on her face, she crouched down next to him. Then, she grabbed his hand and placed it against her cheek.Jacob's chest clenched when he saw that.
