Odette stood on the balcony of her apartment, the crisp evening air biting at her skin as she wrapped her cardigan tighter around her body. The city sprawled beneath her, glittering and alive, yet she felt strangely detached from it all.

The name “Sokolov” reverberated in her mind, a sinister melody she couldn’t shake. Ever since Anton had confessed that the threats against her were tied to the dangerous Russian family, the pieces of her past and present felt like they were colliding in ways she could barely comprehend.

Her phone buzzed on the coffee table inside. She reluctantly walked back into the apartment, dreading the conversation she knew was coming. When she saw Anton’s name flash on the screen, her chest tightened.

She answered on the third ring.

“Odette,” Anton’s voice was steady, but there was an edge of tension that immediately put her on alert.

“What is it?” she asked, leaning against the kitchen counter.

“I’m coming over,” he said without preamble.

“Why? What’s going on

“Odette, you’ve been working nonstop, barely eating, barely sleeping. If I don’t intervene, I’m genuinely afraid you’ll combust,” Amerie declared, hands planted firmly on her hips as she blocked Odette’s path to the bedroom.“I’m fine, Amerie,” Odette muttered, brushing past her to grab a throw blanket off the couch. “I just need some quiet time.”“No, what you need is to live a little,” Amerie countered, snatching the blanket from her hands. “And by living, I mean partying. Loud music, dancing, and maybe even a few cocktails. I already picked out an outfit for you.”Odette turned to glare at her friend. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Do you know what kind of week I’ve had?”“Exactly why this is non-negotiable,” Amerie shot back. “You’ve been on edge since Anton started acting like some brooding secret agent, and don’t get me started on those creepy threats. If you stay cooped up in this apartment, you’ll go insane.”Odette sighed, rubbing her temples. She hated to admit it, but Amerie

Amerie’s PerspectiveAmerie Jackson sat in the living room of their shared apartment, her fingers nervously drumming on the armrest of the sofa. The TV played in the background, muted, casting shifting lights across the walls. She had been sitting in silence for hours now, waiting for a call, a text—anything to tell her Odette was okay. Her thoughts were chaotic, bouncing between guilt and anger. She had been the one to push Odette to go out that night. “You’ve been so stressed, babe. Let loose for once,” she had said. And now, Odette was gone.Amerie swallowed hard, staring at her phone. Anton had promised he’d bring her back, but Amerie wasn’t sure if she trusted him. Sure, he was rich, handsome, and determined, but his world was dangerous, and it had sucked Odette in like quicksand. The memory of her conversation with Odette days earlier replayed in her mind.“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this… frazzled,” Amerie had teased.“It’s Anton,” Odette admitted, sitting cross-legged on

Odette’s heart slammed against her ribcage as her eyes met the man standing in the doorway. He was tall, with sharp features and an unnerving calmness in his demeanor. His cold, calculating stare made her throat tighten. “Recognize me?” he asked, his lips curling into a cruel smile. She swallowed hard, trying to place him. There was something familiar about his piercing gaze, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. “Should I?” she shot back, masking her fear with defiance. The man chuckled, stepping closer. “I suppose you wouldn’t. Your father and I did most of our dealings behind closed doors.” Her stomach dropped. “My father?” He crouched in front of her, his smirk widening. “Yes, dear Odette. I was quite the… business associate of Charles Falcone. Until he crossed the wrong people, of course.” The blood drained from her face as the pieces began to fall into place. This man wasn’t just another player in the game. He was connected to her father’s downfall—and, by exten

The ride back to Anton’s penthouse was suffocatingly silent. Odette sat curled in the passenger seat, her knees drawn to her chest as the events of the night replayed in her mind. She could still feel the rough ropes on her wrists, hear Sergei’s sinister voice, and smell the metallic tang of blood in the air. Anton glanced at her periodically, his grip on the steering wheel tight, knuckles white. He wanted to speak, to offer comfort, but he didn’t know where to start. The rage that had fueled him during the rescue was now replaced with a gnawing guilt. He had failed to protect her. When they arrived, Damien was already there, barking orders at the security team. He nodded grimly at Anton, who helped Odette out of the car, his hand lingering on her back as if afraid to let go. Inside, the penthouse was eerily quiet. Amerie sat on the couch, her face pale and tear-streaked. The moment she saw Odette, she bolted up, pulling her into a fierce hug. “I was so scared,” Amerie sobbe

  • Rediscovering Odette    Chapter Thirty-Nine

The morning light filtered through the wooden blinds of the cabin, casting warm golden streaks across the room. Odette stirred awake, her body still heavy with exhaustion but her mind surprisingly calm. The events of the previous night felt distant now, like a nightmare she was finally waking from. Anton was already up, standing by the window with a steaming cup of coffee in his hand. He was shirtless, his broad shoulders catching the sunlight, and his white-blond hair was slightly tousled. The sight of him standing there, so at ease yet so commanding, sent an unexpected flutter through her chest. “You’re awake,” he said softly, turning to face her. His voice held a gentleness that she wasn’t used to hearing, and it made her heart ache. She sat up, pulling the blanket around her. “Barely. What time is it?” “Early,” he replied. “I thought you could use the extra sleep.” Odette rubbed her eyes, her gaze falling on the table nearby, where a plate of toast and fruit sat waitin

The sun had dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of purple and orange. The soft crackle of the fire filled the cabin, casting a warm glow over the room. Odette sat cross-legged on the rug near the hearth, her fingers idly tracing patterns on the edge of a throw pillow. Anton had stepped out for a moment, leaving her alone with her thoughts. Her chest felt lighter, almost buoyant, after the moments they had shared earlier. For the first time in years, she allowed herself to believe that maybe—just maybe—she could have a future with Anton. Yet, as the warmth of that thought settled over her, the shadows of their past loomed just behind it. The sound of the cabin door opening broke her reverie. Anton stepped in, carrying a tray with two glasses of red wine and a plate of dark chocolate truffles. He flashed her a small smile, setting the tray on the low wooden table beside her. “I figured we could end the day on a sweet note,” he said, sitting down across from

The night stretched endlessly, the stillness of the lake interrupted only by the faint rustle of leaves and the occasional chirp of crickets. Odette leaned into the warmth of Anton’s jacket draped around her shoulders, its faint scent grounding her in the moment. The dock creaked softly beneath their weight as they sat side by side, legs dangling above the water. For the first time in years, the silence between them wasn’t heavy or strained. It was easy, almost comforting. Odette hadn’t realized how much she’d missed sharing moments like this with someone who truly knew her—or at least had once. “This place reminds me of the summers we spent at my family’s estate,” Anton murmured, breaking the silence. His voice was soft, thoughtful. “Remember the tire swing by the pond? You always dared me to jump, and every time I’d miss the water and end up covered in mud.” Odette laughed, a sound so genuine it startled even her. “You were hopeless at aiming. But you never stopped trying.”

The quiet serenity of the cabin was almost deceptive. The soft crackle of the fireplace, the distant sound of wind rustling through the trees—it all felt so far removed from the chaos that had been their lives lately. But Anton knew better. Peace, especially for someone like him, was always fleeting. He stood in the kitchen, staring blankly out of the window, his hand wrapped around a steaming cup of coffee. Odette was still asleep in the bedroom upstairs, the calm rise and fall of her breath a soothing reminder of her presence. For once, she seemed to be at ease, free of the tension that had haunted her since the night she was taken.Anton wished he could let his guard down as easily. The vibrating hum of his phone on the counter pulled him out of his thoughts. He reached for it, his chest tightening when he saw the blocked number on the screen. He hesitated. No good ever came from answering calls like this, but ignoring it wasn’t an option. Slowly, he swiped to accept the call.“Dim

A trick of her mind. But as the days passed, it became harder to ignore.Anton was watching her.She felt it in the way certain shadows lingered longer than they should. In the subtle hum of something just beneath the surface. In the way her instincts—so finely tuned from months of survival—refused to let her dismiss it.And yet… he never approached her.Never confronted her.He just… watched. As if waiting for something. As if waiting for her.She first noticed it at the bookstore.A small, quiet shop tucked between a bakery and a florist.
