Chapter 5: Jenny

In the kitchen of the white two-story farmhouse, Cole watched as the woman silently scanned the room.

When he'd parked the truck in front of the house, she'd made no attempt to get out. He'd come around and opened her door, but still, she'd hesitated, her good eye darting all around the area. Finally, she'd slid down and followed him up the steps and across the covered porch to the door, which he'd opened, letting her into the house.

Blue, his three-year-old blue tick coonhound greeting them excitedly at the door, whining and wagging his tail. Cole watched the woman stiffen and the dog sniffed her curiously.

"He's a love," he said quickly. "Aren't you, Blue?"

The woman tentatively offered the back of her hand which the dog immediately licked. Her expression lightened a bit, and she squatted down to pet Blue.

In the quiet of the house, he took a deep breath. "Can you tell me who hurt you?"

Startled, she turned to him, her battered face at odds with the bright green eye so filled with fear. She didn't answer.

"Was it your husband?"

She shook her head.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere.

"Your boyfriend?" he tried. Again, she shook her head.

Cole frowned, trying to frame the next question. "Did you know the person? Were you running away from him?"

This time she hesitated slightly, then nodded.

"We need to call the police," he said, reaching for his phone.

With surprising swiftness, she launched herself toward him, gripping his arm and shaking her head violently.

"Why don't you want to call the police? They can help you." He had a new thought. "Unless you're in trouble with the law?"

She squeezed his arm and shook her head again.

"How about family? Is there somebody I can call?"

The bright green eye blinked hard and she shook her head, no.

Cole blew out a frustrated breath. "This would be so much easier if you'd just talk to me."

The woman took a step back and motioned to her lips and neck, shaking her head.

Frowning, Cole scrubbed at his chin. "Are you telling me you can't talk?"

She gazed at him solemnly, nodding her head.

"Holy shit," he breathed. He stalked around the kitchen, trying to decide what to do next. Blue had taken up a protective position at the woman's feet. Cole looked out the window, where the sun had just disappeared into the western horizon.

If she didn't want to call the police, she had to have a good reason. She was clearly afraid of the person who'd beaten her.

Hell, she might even need medical attention. He'd taken a beating or two in his time. "Can I at least take you to the urgent care in Visalia?"

Predictably, she shook her head.

Understanding dawned on him. "He'll be looking for you, won't he?"

Her battered lip trembled, and a lone tear escaped from her emerald-colored eye. Cole felt his soul tear apart. By God, nobody would be laying a hand on this girl as long as he had anything to say about it.

"It's okay, darlin', we'll figure this out, I promise." Gently resting a hand on her back, he guided her to a stool at the kitchen counter. Blue followed, curling up at her feet.

"I'm Cole, by the way. Cole Caldwell." He held out his right hand. Tentatively, she reached to shake it. With her other hand, she swiped at the tear on her cheek.

"Are you hungry?" he asked, moving toward the refrigerator. "I have leftover beef stew. I made it last night. It's not fancy, but it's stick-to-your-ribs."

He looked her way, and she nodded shyly. He smiled kindly. "I have an idea. Maybe you can write what you want to say." He slid a yellow Post-It pad and a black pen towards her.

Eyeing the paper and pad, she shook her head in a definite 'no'.

Disappointed and feeling like he'd lost some of her confidence, he sighed deeply. "I'd at least like to know what to call you."

Chewing her lip, she watched him for a moment, then swept the paper and pen out of the way. With a shaky finger, she drew a letter on the counter.

"J," Cole said aloud.

She continued, with Cole reading each one. "E. N. N."

With a final look at him, she drew a y.

He beamed at her. "Jenny. Your name is Jenny."

She nodded, wringing her hands together in her lap.

"It's nice to meet you, Jenny." He gazed at her proudly. "I'm Cole. Cole Caldwell."

She looked so pathetic, wrapped in his black hoodie, her long red hair all wild around her battered face. He had another thought.

"Maybe while I heat up the stew, you might want to take a nice hot shower? I don't have any women's clothes, but I imagine I can rustle up something better than that old jacket of mine."

She appeared to consider his idea before slowly nodding.

Cole motioned to her, and she followed him upstairs, Blue trailing along behind. "This is the bathroom," he said, stopping outside the door. "Wait right here, and I'll go find something for you to wear."

He left her in the hallway, traveling further down to his bedroom. It had once been his parents' room, but when they moved out, he'd taken over the master.

He was not at all convinced that leaving the police out of the situation was the best plan, but for now, he wanted to appease her, to make her comfortable.

Jenny. Telling him her name took a great deal of trust. And she didn't speak? What sort of trauma produced that kind of effect? He wasn't sure he wanted to know. He'd known combat veterans with all sorts of issues, but they'd all been verbal.

He'd just have to take it a moment at a time and trust his instincts. Like with his horses. The thought occurred to him that Jenny was, in many ways, like the horses he trained. Working with them took great amounts of patience and hard work. But they always came around.

In his bottom drawer, he found an old pair of sweatpants. Meant for his six-foot-six frame, they'd be huge on her, but the waist had a drawstring, so at least they wouldn't fall off. He also grabbed a pair of grey wool socks. From the closet, he took the oldest flannel shirt he owned. The red and black shirt would swallow her whole, but it was soft.

Returning to the hallway, he found her petting Blue, the dog looking up at her adoringly. She'd removed the jacket, and in answer to his earlier question, she was indeed dressed. If you called it that. She was wearing a skimpy club dress in some kind of metallic material. He'd seen more fabric on a stripper.

As he approached, she clutched her arms in front of herself. He didn't miss the bruises in the shape of thumb-prints on her upper arms. Angered by the abuse she'd clearly suffered, he forced a friendly smile.

"Here you go. I imagine they'll be way too big, but at least they'll be warm."

She handed him the jacket and accepted the clothes, touching her fingers to her chin in thanks.

"You're welcome, Jenny," he returned.

Her swollen lips curved slightly in a smile, and she turned to head into the bathroom. As she closed the door behind her, he noticed a mark on the back of her right shoulder. Raised, it was round, about the size of a silver dollar.

Cole blinked as realization dawned, followed by a surge of rage. It's a brand. Someone branded her. "I may have to kill a motherfucker before this is over with."

Chapter 6: Assessing the DamagePeering into the bathroom mirror, Jenny was shocked at what she saw. Her face was a mess, her left eye swollen and purple, and her long red hair was tangled and unruly. She hadn't been to a salon in the two years she'd been Victor's captive. Once shoulder length, her hair now reached nearly down to her behind. She considered the dress and cringed. It was from the limited closet of items Victor had provided, and his tastes in women's fashion left a lot to be desired. Day to day, she alternated between a couple worn pairs of jeans that grew increasingly loose as she lost weight, matching them with a half-dozen old t-shirts. Unless Victor sent for her, in which case he usually specified which slinky dress he wanted her to wear. She supposed he imagined her as a gift to be wrapped and presented, either to himself or to those individuals with whom he wanted to curry favor. She looked at the stack of clothes Cole had given her, touching them lightly

Chapter 7: You Are Safe HereTentatively, Jenny descended the stairs and followed her nose to the kitchen. After her quick shower, she'd towel-dried her newly shorn locks as much as possible. She'd pulled on the grey sweatpants and cinched the waist as tightly as she could, tying off the drawstring in a huge bow to keep it from dragging the floor. Elastic cuffs rested at her ankles while the long legs spilled over, creating grey fleece harem-style pants. The red plaid flannel shirt had swallowed her whole, with the tail hanging nearly to her knees. She'd ended up unbuttoning the bottom few buttons and tying the shirttails in a square knot around her waist, rolling the sleeves over and over until her hands were free. She thought her favorite part of the ensemble, though, were the grey wool socks. For the first time all day, she felt warm. The dog had been waiting for her outside the bathroom door, and he padded down the stairs behind her. As she entered the kitchen, Cole's bac

Chapter 8: Hot Dinner and a BedAt the round kitchen table, Cole ladled steaming stew into the blue bowl in front of her, and then into his own bowl. He offered her a plate of cornbread, and she took a wedge. "Anyway, it's not fancy, but it's filling." He grinned at her and scooped up an enormous spoonful of stew. Closing her eyes, Jenny leaned forward over her bowl and breathed in deeply. The stew smelled divine. Her normal dinner was a cold sandwich. When someone remembered. If Slater was in charge, he usually brought an Italian sub, or at least the portion he hadn't eaten. She'd gotten to the point that the scent of salami turned her stomach. Breathing in again, her mouth actually watered at the rich aroma of beef and vegetables. When she opened her eyes, Cole was watching her carefully. "Try it. It's not bad. I'm a halfway decent cook."She picked up her spoon, dipped it into the stew, and took a bite. Oh, my God, this is the best thing I've ever tasted. She felt

Chapter 9: Now What?Alone, Cole made his way on foot to the barn. When he'd left Jenny upstairs in her room, Blue had circled once, then curled up beside the bed. Cole figured that was just as well. Jenny seemed to have taken to the dog, and Cole knew his dog well enough to know he'd sensed the girl's brokenness. The sun had long ago set, but his way was lit by the nearly full moon and the glow of the industrial fixture on the front of the barn. Of the twelve stalls, eight were currently occupied, now that Dahlia was here. Four of the horses were Cole's, with another three belonging to clients who'd entrusted them to him for training. Four clients, now, including Dahlia. Meredith popped into his mind and he grimaced, wondering again if the money was worth the trouble. He paused outside the barn to do a little deep breathing, trying to get into the proper headspace for working with the horses. They seemed to be as in tune with his mood as Blue was, and in truth, his afterno

Chapter 10: The Next MorningThe following morning, by the time the rooster crowed in the barnyard just as the sun was peeking over the eastern horizon, Cole was already up. He pulled on a faded pair of jeans and a flannel-lined chambray shirt against the chill of the March morning. Passing Jenny's door, he peered in to see her in much the same position in which she'd been the night before. Hooking his head to the right, he indicated for Blue to follow him, which the dog did, albeit reluctantly.A hot mug of coffee in hand, he stepped out onto the wide covered porch and watched as Blue performed his morning constitutional. Cole had a busy day ahead of him, having lost time the day before traveling to and from Carmel. He needed to work all the horses, for a little while, at least, and he wanted to see what kind of headway he could make with Dahlia. And he needed to go to town to pick up feed for the horses. He thought of Jenny, asleep upstairs. As long as he'd be in town, he was

Chapter 11: Shopping Trip Into TownCole looked down at his shopping cart. Maybe he'd overdone it. Probably he had. But for cripes sake, the girl had nothing. He frowned to himself. Girl. Woman. He realized he still had no idea how old she was.He made a mental note to find out when he got home. It would not do to be harboring a minor, despite her refusal to call the authorities.Making his way to the first open check-out lane, he began placing items on the black conveyor. A few pairs of jeans, a handful of t-shirts, including a couple in shades of purple, and some nicer tops, too. He smiled at the shoes he'd chosen, a pair of purple sneakers along with a pretty pair of jeweled sandals in her size that he hadn't been able to resist. He'd found a simple dress with purple flowers on it, and he'd immediately thought of her. Jenny. More than anything, he wanted to make her happy, to see her smile in a relaxed, unguarded way. Chapter 12: A Temporary SituationBack at the farmhouse, Jenny made sure the kitchen was spick and span. She also straightened up the room she'd slept in. It wasn't her room, and it wouldn't do to even begin thinking of it as such. Cole had said it belonged to his sister. Jenny wanted to make sure to leave it in exactly the way she found it. Adjusting the throw pillows for the tenth time, she thought about her room at home, the one that she'd grown up in, the one she'd assumed she'd always have, even after she moved out on her own. She could picture the purple velvet duvet cover she'd picked out, the one her mother had said was a little too expensive, but her father had purchased anyway. It looked just right on the antique white sleigh bed, which matched the large dresser on top of which were scattered her favorite photos and keepsakes. She sighed sadly, wondering where all her things were. All her family's things. She rarely indulged in these kinds of thoughts, because inev

"Hey, Jenny."Stomach fluttering, she smiled and waved."I have a ton of stuff in here," he said, opening the truck's back door. He picked up several large grey plastic shopping bags in each hand and headed toward her. "Beneath all this is the feed I picked up. I'd like to get that unloaded at the barn, and then," he thrust the bags into Jenny's hands, "I brought home dinner."Jenny looked down at the heavy mass of bags. "Don't worry, there's lots more." She turned to her left where Angus beamed at her, his azure eyes sparkling, before he pressed a warm kiss to her lips. "We did it, love."Through ears that pounded in rhythm with her pulse, all sound was muffled as she watched him step into the aisle, button his black tuxedo jacket, and make his way up the steps to the stage where a woman in a glittery silver gown stood holding a golden statuette. The woman handed the award to Angus and murmured words of congratulations before stepping back out of the spotlight that illuminated the lone microphone in the center of the stage. As the applause died down, Angus gazed down at the trophy in his hands and shook his head in disbelief. "Och, aye, and it's a hell of a thing," he sighed, and applause broke out again. It was costing Angus a pretty penny to rent out the high-end Aspen bistro for the evening but treating everyone to a wrap party was the right thing to do. They'd all worked hard, and most of the cast had done so without pay, agreeing to share in the profits from future ticket sales instead. Something that never failed to produce a pang in his stomach when he thought about it. Because suppose no one wanted to pay to watch his gamble? What then?"A toast to our

What else would he say? He wanted things to be just the way they'd been before he'd gone to Colorado. Only things hadn't really been the way she'd thought they were at all, had they?A glance at her bedside clock showed that it was 8:30pm. Which meant that at Sweetwater Ranch, it was only 6:30. Dinnertime. She wondered vaguely what they'd have that night. Probably steaks on the grill, she thought with a nagging sense of longing. Here at Horse Heaven, most of the employees lived in their own apartments away from the ranch. Only she and Janine, the owner of the facility, lived on the property, and after the first night, when her new boss had taken her to a local bar-be-que place for dinner, Anna was on her own for meals. Chapter 214: Angus Returns to Sweetwater RanchA relaxed half-smile played across Angus's lips as he neared Sweetwater Ranch. He'd headed to Colorado to nail down the details of his film set, but he was coming back with so much more than that. He couldn't stop thinking about the elevated clearing. Perched on the hillside overlooking the valley, he'd defy anyone to find a more beautiful view. On his laptop, he had the initial plans and an artist's rendering of a beautiful, luxurious log home. But with the proceeds from the sale of his Malibu home, he'd be more than able to build anything he could imagine. Anything he and Anna could imagine. In his mind's eye, he didn't see himself living in that idyllic setting alone. The view reminded him of that first day she'd taken him riding, of the view of the ranch from the trail that overlooked the ranch. Everywhere Angus looked, he saw Anna, and he thought of how she'd love the valley and the foothills, and how not far from where he
