LAUREL’s POV
“Yes, Alpha.”
I head over to the next room and stand like a soldier at ease next to a massive throne of gold. Moments later, a fully clothes Helios walks in and takes his place on the throne.
He throws me a knowing glance and nods his head slightly. Taking his cue, I call out to the guards, “Send Nox in!”
Helios’ jaws clench when the doors open. He does not like his uncle, not one bit. The man may be of the same bloodline as Helios but he is a double-headed snake and a poisonous one at that.
“Ahhh….my dear nephew!” Nox walks in flamboyantly with outstretched arms. The lights from the corridor momentarily shine on his clean-shaven bald head before the doors close.
But Nox is not alone, for on both his sides are two gorgeous platinum blondes with violet eyes; twins, both in identical scantily clad dresses that do nothing to hide the shape of their breasts and silky-smooth legs that seem to go on forever.
“Look at what I brought for you, Helios!” Nox says, stopping right before Helios’ throne and pulling both blondes closer to him, patting their butts. The twins giggle nervously and curtsy at Helios.
My chest tightens at the sight of the twins. More women to please Helios.
“What's the meaning of this?” Helios asks, leaning back against his chair and resting his jaw on one hand.
“Helios, you barely come out on nights when the moon is full. People are talking, they’re saying that strange things happen behind closed doors up here in your chamber when the moon is at its most powerful.”
He looks Helios up and down, trying to size his nephew up but it is difficult because Helios just sits there with a mask of boredom. “Nox, what blasphemy is this? I’ve been up here with Laurel all night long working.”
I quickly nod but Nox is not buying it and a thread of uneasiness enters me when Nox looks my way.
“Working all night long?” A corner of his lips curls and there is also a glint of satisfaction in his eyes, a prey finally caught. “That sounds mighty boring, Helios. Then you must thank me, nephew, for I’ve come bearing just the very gift you need. Entertainment.”
The moment he says the word ‘entertainment’, he roughly grabs tears off one of the twin’s dresses, exposing her breast and cups it, squeezing it hard.
There is no tenderness in his touch and I can see the twin squirm a little. She is obviously afraid of him. Without another word, he slides a hand down to her cilt and thrusts a finger in. The twin clamps her eyes shut and her lips quiver.
“Do you like what you see Helios? She is young, and is very impressionable. Surely having her here would be a lot more interesting than being cooped up in this tower, don't you think? Tell me, nephew, what work is it that you do in the tower, exactly?”
Helios raises an eyebrow at Nox, “What I do up here does not concern you, Nox. You should know your place.”
Nox’s lips turn into a frown. He is not happy with Helios’ answer. But he forces a smile, “Never mind. How can we talk business when gorgeous girls are present? Helios, aren't you bored with your Beta already?”
Why is he dragging me into this? I suck in a breath at his degrading words and my brows furrow. I fume, “Nox, watch your words-”
I feel Helios’ hand on mine, signalling for me to stay quiet and I turn my head to look at him. He shoots me a smile and shakes his head so I immediately clam up.
“Ahhh, Helios, you have trained your Beta well. And I'm sure she must have pleased you all this while.” He winks at us, “but sometimes you have to turn to the professionals for a better experience.”
He didn’t just say that! The nerve of that man!
Nox grabs hold of the twin’s hair and shoves her forward. “I’m sure the twins will serve you well. Let them meet all your needs.”
The twin bows deeply at Helios, letting her twin peaks hang in the air for all to see.
“Alpha Helios,” she said huskily,” it is an honour to be in your presence.” She looks up, daring to meet his eyes, and continues,” My name is Lala and this is my sister, Cici.”
Helios’ eyes rake her from head to toe, stopping momentarily to admire her exposed breast. Unconsciously, I look down at my attire. I am clothed in a dull brown vest that fully covers my body and a pair of leather black pants; not exactly the most appealing of outfits. A part of me wonders if Helios would look at me more if I dressed up. And if I did, would he regard me as a woman instead of just his loyal follower?
Nox’s voice pulls me out of my musings.
“Helios, think about the things you can do with them,” he suggests lewdly and steps forward to take a glass of wine that sits untouched on Helios’ table.
Gingerly, he lifts the wine glass by its flute and pours it down Lala’s dress, effectively drenching her, creating a visual feat for Helios. The now drenched see-through dress allows the men to feast on the red liquid seeping between the moulds of her breasts. Some trickle over her pink, taut nipples. I see Lala tense at this. It seems that Nox has done this to her before.
He bends her over her back. Then he attacks her breasts, savagely biting, gnawing and sucking her breasts until they are red and raw. It is a sickening act. Slave or not, no woman deserves to be treated and degraded like this!
I cast a quick glance at Helios, hoping for him to put a stop to this barbaric act but he says nothing. He merely sits there and watches as Nox continues to abuse the twin.
Then finally, after what feels like an eternity, Nox pushes Lala back to her sister. Her eyes are rimmed red by now.
“She’s delicious,” he chuckles, wiping away the wine stain from his lip with a calloused thumb. “Dance for Helios, ladies. Show him what you are capable of. ”
And they do. Both Lala and Cici automatically start dancing sensually to an invisible rhythm, swaying their hips suggestively at Helios.
Their exotic moves have both men watching them as if in a trance and I will myself to look away even as my heart sinks deeper than the abyss.
Lala, or is it Cici parts her legs and raises a hand to caress her own body, inexplicably letting out a moan. Then slowly, she hooks a finger under the strap of her dress and peels it off, revealing her body in full glory.
My jaw literally drops seeing her get naked just like that.
And from beneath her, her twin sister crawls out on all fours, moving slowly but surely towards Helios like a subdued she-wolf. She is just about to reach Helios when suddenly, the naked twin trips and falls. The other gasps and quickly helps her sister up. Both start to tremble and apologize profusely, “Forgive us, Nox! It was an accident, please, spare us!”
Nox is red in the face and looks like he is about to lash out. But at that very moment, we hear a clapping sound. It is Helios and he claps as he smiles. “You’re right Nox, they are indeed very good.”
He drums his fingers on the side of his throne as he eyes both the twins, the smile never leaving his face. “I’ll take them both.”
That's it. I can take this no more. “Helios, may I be excused to take my place to guard the entrance?”
At my request, Helios throws me an odd look but doesn't say anything. He merely nods his head and it takes all my willpower not to run out of his chamber.
With each step that I take, I have to hold back my tears.
You are a big girl now Laurel, I keep telling myself. You already have a lot. Be content with what you have. The world doesn’t revolve around you.
The last sound I hear before I step out of the chamber is the sisters squealing with glee as they run over to Helios, presumably to each take a seat on his thigh before proceeding to make out with him on the throne.
I do not want to look; I do not want to know. With a heavy heart, I push the door to the chamber but suddenly, a hand sticks out, stopping me and my heart skips a beat. Is it Helios?
A head pops out from behind the door. It is Nox.
Oh.
“Hello, Beta. Care for me to join you at guarding post?”
Beside us, the guards immediately step aside to make room for us.
I ignore Nox and proceed to stand erect at the entrance, choosing instead to focus on the bright yellow lights that illuminate the long lofty corridor.
“You're very dedicated to Helios, Laurel. It’s a pity Helios is too blind to see that. He does not appreciate you,” Nox tsks.
I do not answer him.
Unperturbed, Nox continues,” He doesn't cherish your feelings for him.”
My body tenses up. I know the game Nox is playing. He wants to sway my loyalty towards Helios but darn right if I will let him. I have to be honest though, Nox’s words do affect me more than I'd like to admit.
He leans into my ear and whispers,” Helios lusts only after pretty young things. He will kick you out in a heartbeat the minute he's done with you. And it pains me to know that, Laurel. You know I only want the best for you. I can offer you so much more than just being his sidekick.”
He lets the words hang in the air, letting the idea sink into my head.
“Save it, Nox. If you think for one minute that you can get me to side with you, then you're wrong.”
Nox sighs. “Oh Laurel, don't be a fool–”
“LAUREL MOON!”
Helios. He summons me.
I sidestep Nox and push open the door to the chamber once more. The twins flank Helios left and right, massaging his shoulders.
“Yes, Helios?” I answer, all the while gritting my teeth.
“Bring the girls, Caca and Lili?”
“It's Lala and Cici,” Lala coos.
He waves his hand in the air as if their names don't matter,” Whatever. Send them to the new villa.”
The new villa. I suck in my breath. The villa was only recently constructed and it is where Helios sends the women who pleasure him to stay. I do not like that villa, more than any of the women who stay there.
But I push aside my opinion and nod my head at him. “Yes, Alpha.”
Curling my finger at the twins, I signal for them to follow me and they begrudgingly come to my side, their eyes still lingering on Helios.
No sooner are we out of the tower than the twins start to bombard me with questions about Helios.
“What's his favourite food? And drink? Does he like to drink?”
“How does Helios like his women? Does he like it when girls play hard to get or would he prefer for us to take the initiative?”
“What turns him on? Which position does he like best?”
I wish they would just shut up. Their incessant yapping is giving me a headache. And the fact that I lost quite a large amount of blood doesn't seem to be helping either. But they keep on asking me for ways to win over his heart. And while I find them annoying, I understand why they are doing this.
They are doing this to survive.
The girls soon tire of me ignoring them and one of them yanks my hair, stopping me in my tracks. A few pack members who are out and about see this and stop to see what the commotion is all about.
“Hey! Why aren't you answering us?” Lala demands, her hand still grabbing my hair. I push her hand away and ignore her, marching forward to bring them to the villa. It is not too far from where we are now.
“Yeah! You're just jealous of us, aren't you?” chimes Cici. “We know all about you, Laurel Moon.”
“You're his whore, aren't you? ‘Beta’ is just a disguise for him to fuck you anytime he wants.”
LAUREL’s POV It's a lie. It's a freaking lie. But I refuse to answer them, I swallow the lump in my throat and forge on. “You seduced him to get this position, didn't you? Why would Alpha Helios appoint a woman as Beta? This is unheard of,” Lala taunts me. My fingers ball into a fist. That's it. They've crossed the line. “Oh puh-lease…she? Seduce Helios? Look at her face! Helios wouldn't be attracted to someone like her! A woman should know how to satisfy her man, instead of hoarding a man’s job. Beta, hah!” Cici exclaims, her voice rising loud enough for everyone around us to hear now. I take my whip out, crack it in the air and cry out, “ENOUGH!” The whip slices through the cold night air with a thunderous roar and the twins gasp in both shock and surprise. It never fails as a warning shot. I won’t hurt them but they have to know their boundaries. One of them, Lala, stares at me with eyes larger than the moon and begins to whimper but her sister, Cici is not backing down. She
LAUREL’s POV Tears stream down my face as I run through the woods, ignoring the dry branches and twigs that scrape my feet. In my haste to leave the house earlier on, I had forgotten to put on my shoes. But it doesn’t matter. The pain from the scrapes is nothing compared to the agony my heart feels inside. Growing up, I kept telling myself that my parents loved me, that they were just stricter with me because I am the oldest, and that they wanted only the best for me. But who am I kidding? No matter what I did, no matter how hard I tried, it was never enough. Never. So, I studied harder, trained harder, and worked harder than everyone else, hoping that one day, my parents smile at me and say, “We’re proud of you, Laurel.” And when today finally came, I thought that I would gain their favour, that they would finally acknowledge their daughter. But they never did. Even the blind can see that they do not love me. Soon I reach the lakeside, deep in the woods and fall to my knees. T
HELIOS’ POV I stand by the lakeside and watch as Laurel’s figure disappears under the canopy of trees. She is going home. I should too, but for some reason, my feet are rooted to the ground and I cannot tear my eyes away from her. For some reason, my heart goes out to her. It is only after she is long gone that I finally start to move. This is the first time I have seen Laurel cry. “You made her cry,” Apollo, my wolf chides, stating the obvious. I roll my eyes at his remark and continue my stride toward my residence. Maybe I should have gotten Laurel to stay at the packhouse instead of with her parents. At least I would be able to keep an eye on her. “Oh, what a wonderful idea! All the better for her to hear you hump her sister!” Apollo is very sarcastic tonight. “Shut up.” “You shut up. You’re the reason she’s in this miserable state.” I shake my head and smash a fist against a pine tree, scaring a few owls and they quickly hoot and fly away. In a sense, Apollo is right. I s
HELIOS’ POV I grab a tiny glass vial and hang it around my neck via a string. It is a special ointment made by our pack doctor used to accelerate the healing of wounds. I could use this as an excuse to see Laurel. Her residence is on the other side of town and it will take at least an hour by foot. So I shift; my bones snap and break as my body starts to change and mend while my muscles tear and reform to my wolf structure. It fucking hurts every time I shift but it has happened so many times that I’ve gotten used to it. My skin burns and stretches to take on my wolf shape before dark black fur finally covers my body. The shift is complete and Apollo is now free. He lets out a howl that echoes into the night and we immediately tear through the woods, running as fast as the wind can carry out feet. My lungs burn and I gasp for air. This is usually never the case. On a normal day, I can run rings around my land without even breaking a sweat. But tonight, as the full moon rides high i
LAUREL’s POVI wake up from a dark dream to hear muffled sounds coming from far away. Someone is upstairs talking to mother and father. And the voice sounds hauntingly familiar…Helios? My head feels like it’s about to split open but I force my eyes open anyways and wince at the bright light from the lone light bulb that swings above me. The brightness stings my eyes but it doesn’t matter.Helios is here! A tiny flicker of hope starts to grow within me. Help…I need help. Helios, help me!I try to call out but I am gagged. I try to stand but both my hands and legs are still bound by the metal chains.Helios I am here. Please…help me!I hear the sound of laughter…Jamie? Somehow, she sounds different. Then the footsteps fade as if they are walking away. Is Helios leaving? No, no, no…. don’t leave. Save me, please. Set me free! Someone…ANYONE!Desperate, I struggle violently only to end up falling forward on the cold hard basement floor and banging my head. I try to summon my wolf, but to
LAUREL’s POV It is the second day of my entrapment. I probably wouldn’t have been able to tell that a new day has begun if it weren’t for the tiny rectangular window that sits at the top of the wall. Father had barred it with wooden planks painted in neon pink years ago to stop the rodents from scurrying in and out but years of neglect have left the planks rotting with no replacement in sight. Streams of warm morning sunlight shine through the dilapidated window and specs of dust dance in the light, swaying ever so gently without so much as a care for this world. And as the dust dance in the air, I lay on the cold damp floor, still chained to the chair. I inhale deeply. if only life was that simple and carefree. My head is throbbing, my arms are burning and my back is cramping. But I continue doing what I have been doing all night long. I continue to rub the chains that bind me against the chair, hoping against all odds to break free. I try not to think about why all this happened
HELIOS’ POV SLAM! My fists connect with the mahogany desk and Rhode, my administrator from the pack council jumps in fright. “What did you say?” I growl as I lean over the table and stare into Rhode’s face. Rhode blinks rapidly, pushes up his glasses and opens his mouth to speak. But when his eyes fall on the dent I made on the desk, his words come out more as a squeak. “Um…Beta Laurel Moon applied for a few days’ leave.” I frown. This has never happened before. Laurel has never taken leave from work in all her years as a Beta. Is she still upset with me? Is it because I slept with her sister? ‘Of course, it is you dickhead,’ Apollo chides at me. ‘You bedded her sister…of all women.’ I sigh and wave Rhode off. He immediately scampers out of my chamber, almost bumping into the wall on the way. This guy is the only omega in my pack who wears glasses and still walks into walls. Apollo continues, ‘She didn’t even want to apply for her leave directly from you. I’m telling you Heli
LAUREL’s POV ONE HOUR BEFORE HELIOS ENTERS THE DARK FOREST I haul myself up over mother’s old furniture, chairs, and cupboards to climb to the top of the stack where the window lies. And with trembling hands, I yank the planks off. The rusty nails give way, the wood crumbles and the dilapidated planks disintegrate into a flurry of dust. Then, balling my fingers into a fist, I smash the window. CRASH! The glass shatters into tiny pieces and shards of glass cut my skin but I do not care. I've already lost so much blood, what is a little bit more if it can buy my freedom? Then, a moan comes from the basement floor. It is Jamie and I know she will wake up soon. There is no time to lose. Quickly, I tear off the emerald curtain that frames the broken window and wrap it like a shawl around my head. I know I need to get to safety, but I doubt if anyone will come running my way to help if they see a green-colored walking corpse. A wave of dizziness hits me as I try to squeeze my way out
HELIOS’ POVI should be fading into nothingness, I should be dying. But somehow I am not.Pain, red searing pain and a darkened cloud of confusion swim around me, but through all this, I feel the touch of an angel. I feel something warm and moist touch my lips.It tastes like blood; extremely sweet blood. So sweet that my lips begin to suck feverishly on it. I have tasted this blood before, many moons ago in my chamber but for some reason, I cannot remember how I tasted it before. Was it when I was in my beastial form? The flow of blood that has been steadily dripping from my throat finally begins to slow. At first, I think it is because my body is running out of blood, but then I realize I am healing, which should be impossible with a gaping hole in my chest. Yet, after a few moments, my vision clears and my heartbeat begins to grow stronger.I open my eyes.Laurel lies beside me. And she is feeding me her own blood through her wrist.A smile touches my lips and for a moment, I think
LAUREL’s POV My wrist snaps and a cry of excruciating pain escapes my lips. And as if the Sorceress is an advocate for tortures, she twists my arm to an almost breaking point and forces me to my knees. The Sorceress towers over me, still holding onto my arm but surprisingly, her has changed into one of gentleness. “Does it hurt?” she asks. I grimace. “Yes.” She smiles and breaks my arms as well. All at once, a tsunami of pain shoots up my body and I let out a scream. She releases me the next instant and I fall to the ground, cradling my broken arm and wrist. But it does not take long before I begin to heal. The presence of the black mist within me no doubt speeds up the process. But there is a pain beyond the physical one. A pain that has pierced my heart and soul as I look up into the eyes of the Sorceress. The eyes of the woman who calls me her child. “Do you still not know who I am?” she asks once more. She reaches out to stroke my head. “You look so much like your father, Lau
LAUREL’s POVThe Sorceress stands and stares at me. Her eyes are so dark. As dark as the –“Black mist?” the Sorceress answers for me and I go completely numb. Seeing my reaction, the Sorceress throws her head back and laughs. “Do you know where this power of yours comes from?”I think back to the frayed papyrus that lies within the underground archive of Morningstar and I remember the story. It was exactly the same as my recurring dream. Only, the written words on the papyrus went on to further describe the catalystic events that soon followed...‘The day came when the Alpha King could finally no longer live with the insanity.“Oh Great Moon Goddess, please forgive me for my sins. Please stop this madness from spreading,” he begged. And the Moon Goddess came, she stood in front of the Alpha King, radiant like the full moon.
LAUREL’s POV I hurry along the broken path of the Dark Forest, following the scent of the man who had recently walked before me. The scent of the man I love, Helios Morningstar. And as the western sky turns to a dull orange, I pick up my pace. I have an inkling something has gone wrong. Many steps later, the full moon starts to rise in the east, touching the top of the barren trees with a silver, haunting glow. The branches sway in the breeze, as if shaking their heads and saying, “No, Laurel, you must not go.” I reach a stream, one that I have never seen before and notice that it flows red. Blood. But whose? I frown and am just about to kneel and check it out when I hear footsteps. Panicked and urgent ones. Their scents are familiar and in an instant, I am back up on my feet to see two figures pushing past the dead branches and stumbling towards me. “Ares! Diego!” I call out. Relief washes over me like a tsunami, Ares is alive! “Laurel!” Ares cried out, pushing Diego out of the
HELIOS’ POV“You lie,” the Sorceress says, her voice flat and her eyes dark. She drops the fork back onto her plate with a little clink and spits out a piece of the cut-out heart. Jamie’s lifeless form continues to stare at us through the sockets of her now glassy eyes.“Maybe you didn’t season it with salt and pepper.” My hand goes to the doorknob only to find it locking itself. In an instant, all the windows slam shut. The chandelier disappears, as do the grand staircase and black and white marbled floor. And now, in its place is a dilapidated hut with a tiny flame that floats in the air.I see skeletons scattered everywhere, skeletons of all her past victims carelessly strewn all over the floor.Truly, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.“I thought we were of the same mind, Helios. I thought we could be friends. But it seems like this will never happen and for lyi
HELIOS’ POVWe step into the Dark Forest as the last rays of the sun touch the face of the earth. Jamie hugs herself and looks around nervously. As does Diego.“Alpha Helios, why are we here?” Jamie asks, her teeth chattering nervously. She is all dolled up and dressed in a beautiful lime green dress that flows like the gentle breeze on a midsummer’s night. But there is nothing elegant about the way she carries herself. Not with the chain that binds her around the neck.I turn my head over my shoulder and stare at her shivering form but I do not reply her. Diego tugs at the chain that binds her and she stumbles a little before she manages to find her footing once more.“Did you bring me here to kill me? But we’re mates, Alpha Helios. You are my second chance mate!” she demands. At her words, Diego shoots me a look before quickly averting his gaze and trudging deeper into the f
LAUREL’s POV Helios holds my hand as we walk along the dazzling clear river bank at the valley. My hand disappears in his large one and I am grateful for the warmth that he gives me. A squirrel hops along the river bank, stopping for a second to look at us before quickly hopping away. “How did you run so fast?” Helios finally asks. I stop in my tracks and Helios turns his head slightly to study my face. I slip out of my shoe and rub my feet against the prickly grass, unsure of how to explain myself. The reasons are unclear in my own mind. Helios shifts his body and takes my other hand in his, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Is it your wolf?” “Daphne is…” “Different?” “Yes.” “How so?” My tone is cautious. I do not want to end up sounding like some mad woman who has lost her mind. “I’m not entirely sure but I think it has something to do with the way I found her in the woods.” “In the woods?” “Yes. She was in the form of the black mist, like the one that took Helen’s life at the
LAUREL’s POVI awake with a bolt and a pounding heart from a nightmare. But as it is the case with many bad dreams, I cannot remember much of them. Except for the screaming. And a figure cloaked in black pointing a finger at me.“Laurel?” Helios is instantly by my side, holding me protectively in his arms and that is when I realize that the screaming came from me. I had been screaming in my sleep.“Are you alright?” he cups my face and wipes away the beads of sweat that have gathered on my forehead. I blink, feeling my chest heave up and down, drawing in deep burning breaths that do little to warm the cold that has seeped into me. I frown. The cloaked figure in my dream had said something…but for the life of me, I simply cannot recall what she said.Wait. She. How do I know it was a she?“Laurel?” Helios calls out again and I look into his worried eyes. “Yo
HELIOS’ POV HOURS BEFORE THE MATE BOND TAKES PLACE AND SOMEWHERE DEEP INSIDE THE PRISONERS’ CELLS “I swear! I’m telling the truth! I swear on the Goddess’ name!” Jamie cries as she hangs from two metal chains. Her feet dangle precariously away from a pool of molten lava. I had tried to be nice to her, I had given her the chance to confess her crime. But she chose to deceive me. “You don’t think I would truly believe a word that you said did you?” I ask and tip my head at one of my warriors, He lowers the chain and an agonizing scream tears through the torture chamber. Jamie is lowered to but an inch away from the bubbling lava that threatens to turn her now beautiful legs into black-cindered stumps. She cries, shaking her head desperately, “I….I swear. I saved Laurel. I was the one who killed Marty! Is this how you treat a saviour? You should be thanking me! Laurel is alive because of me!” I sigh. I have had enough of her theatrics. With a hand, I motion for my warrior to bring
