Isabella~
"Miss Luis, did the renowned criminal lawyer Xavier Thompsan come to meet you?" As soon as Xavier left my office, my next client came in. "Yes, he is." I nodded and peered through the large glass window of my office reception. I noticed him walking sadly in the direction of the main gate. I am well aware that no one wants to fight his case because of all the evidence against him. When I first saw his appointment request in my mail, I wanted to turn it down right away, but something inside of me restrained me from doing so. It took me three months to mentally be ready to see him again. But my heart forced me to meet him once so that he could realize what he had lost in his life. That wasn't the only reason I invited him to meet me; I was also genuinely interested in taking on his case, as I found it to be quite challenging. "Did you take his case, Miss Luis?" My client's voice broke my thought bubble. "No." I firmly shook my head. But why did I turn down his case when I knew it would be extremely difficult and may mark a significant turning point in my legal career? I questioned myself. "It's all a game of timing, Miss Luis. Rumor has it that he divorced his first wife to wed her stepsister. It is now clear how his involvement in his wife's murder case manifested his karma." Mr. Lorence sighed profoundly, expressing his conflicted emotions about Xavier. At one point, he appeared to sympathize with Xavier, but it was clear from his words that Xavier deserved this outcome. But it's a good thing that no one recognizes me as his wife anymore. I'm pleased that I changed my identity to Veronica Luis from my previous one as Xavier's Thompson wife. However, my heart still harbors the memory of my past, and when I see Xavier in front of me today, my thoughts revert to the day of our wedding anniversary years ago. Since the day his wife was discovered dead in her own home, her murder has been widely reported in the media. I looked into it carefully to try to solve the mystery surrounding her death, but it proved to be more difficult than I had anticipated. I had convinced myself for years that I had forgotten about Xavier, but today, when I saw him in person, my heart was overflowing with feelings. I saw regret in his eyes and felt a tremendous need to sympathize with him, but I quickly hid my feelings behind my expression. No longer in love with him, but that murder case intrigues me enough to investigate it. "Mr. Lorence, how about we prove that you weren't in the city on the day of your brother's murder?" I glanced over this case file and gave him my new suggestion to keep him out of the investigation into his brother's death. I have decided to assist Mr. Laorence, a well-known businessman, in avoiding the murder allegations against him since his former spouse deceived him into being involved in his brother's murder case in an attempt to seize control of his property. "That's incredible, Miss Luis." When he heard me, a wide smile appeared on his face. "I'll see you in court at the next hearing, Mr. Lorence." I shook hands with him and smiled, glad that I had solved yet another case—or rather, that I had prevented yet another individual from suffering the consequences of a false charge. Sitting by myself in my office, my thoughts drifted back to Xavier. Xaviers's case is similar to Mr. Lorence's case. However, given that he has already assured me that he has no doubts about anyone, I wonder who could kill Alicia. There is one thing I know for sure: Xavier can not, under any circumstances, murder Alicia, and even if he did, he would never act in a way that would implicate him. He most definitely never left any trail leading to her death. Ever since I was unable to piece together Alicia's murder, I have been restless when thinking about Xavier's case. If Xavier hadn't murdered Alicia, then who could? Since he has already discussed his bankruptcy, I'm certain that her murder was not motivated by property. What may be the motive? Who was it that she frequently spoke with on the phone? Is Alicia the only victim of this crime, or is Alicia being used as a target to trap Xavier? Why didn't I accept his case? I want to solve this mystery. I raked my fingers through my hair in frustration because, while I couldn't bear to see him in front of me for even a second, his mysterious case piqued my interest, and I couldn't resist challenging myself by taking on this case. I looked down at reception to see him, but he was nowhere in sight. I called my assistant, instructed her to bring Xavier Thompson back into my office, and informed him that I was prepared to fight his case. Though, in my heart, I wanted to see him pay for his actions, I couldn't let my emotional turmoil compromise my career. "Isa..no, Veronica, did you call me?" Xavier's voice broke my internal conflict. When he called me by my old name, a small part of me remembered the innocent Isabella I had hidden behind all these years. "Indeed, Mr. Thompson, I am ready to fight your case." I motioned for him to sit in the front seat. "What's the reason for this sudden decision change? Do you want to exact revenge on me under the guise of supporting me, or do you have sympathy for me?" He looked at me with confused eyes. His intensely blue eyes locked on my face, making me feel uneasy on the inside, but over the years, I've gotten excellent at hiding my true feelings beneath a neutral expression. "Your both options are wrong, Mr. Thompson. I chose to take up your case because I am determined to unravel the mystery behind it." On the table, I rolled the paperweight. "Bella, is this only about the case?" He fixed his gaze on mine, looking for something tender, but right now, I have no feelings for him. "Yes, Mr. Thompson, this is all about this case, and once again, I am reminding you that it's Veronica, not Isabella anymore." I firmly said to him and began the formalities to take his case into my hands.Xavier~"Thank you, Veronica." I extended my hand for a handshake, expressing my happiness. I didn’t know the specific reason for her to agree to handle my case, but I was relieved she accepted. At least I had a chance to let her lead my defense. Hope surged within me—perhaps, with her skill, the court could grant me bail."Best of luck, Mr. Thompson." Her handshake was firm, her eyes meeting mine with confidence. As her hand touched mine, my heart raced unexpectedly. That touch sparked memories of a past I had long tried to bury, but it also brought feelings of shame."How dare you touch me? I never thought you'd take advantage of my drunken state and seduce me into sleeping with you." The memory of my cruel words came rushing back. I could still hear the echo of that cold, bitter tone. When I had woken up next to her, naked in the same bed, rage consumed me."No, Xavier, I didn’t seduce you. It was you who..." Her words, panicked and terrified, had done little to soothe my fury."Yo
Isabella~"You arrived so early today, Miss Luis, that there was time for attorneys to see their clients in the cell." After noticing the wall clock, the police officer stared at me with surprise. He was right; I came so early today to meet Xavier. After seeing him yesterday, I couldn't concentrate on my other tasks because all I could think about was him. I took on this case as a challenge to myself, but it also seemed to be a test of my feelings and the emotions I had long since buried deep within me. I always wanted to know the reason behind his betrayal, his backstabbing, how he met Alicia, and why he never told me that he loved my stepsister. I had been asking myself these questions for years, and yesterday, I finally had all the answers I needed. After hearing his story, I became resentful of him due to his deceit and insult towards me. However, I also respected him for being open and truthful with me. Accepting their errors is a challenging task, particularly for an egocentr
Xavier~"Does providing homemade food to every client stem from a place of compassion, or is it just your work ethic?" I felt a wave of joy come over me when I saw her give me the lunch box. "I just offered you food because you missed breakfast due to my early visit, and I feel bad for keeping you hungry. You don't need to give up hope." Her icy gaze remained focused on the lunchbox. "Well, whatever the reason, I am thankful to you for giving me a chance to eat homemade food. It's been a while since I've had homemade cuisine. Since Alicia detests cooking, we have lunch and dinner outside most of the time." I tore open the lunchbox right away and devoured all of the delectable food within. Did she still have a memory of my preferences? When I saw my favorite egg curry with noodles, I eagerly glanced back at her face. "Please don't view me in this manner; my maid prepared the meal and packed it for me to eat for lunch." My stare seemed to annoy her. "It's ok; I am still thankful to
Isabella~"Veronica Luis, do you think you can save Xavier Thompson from a death sentence?" As soon as I exited my car in front of the courtroom, Derrick Merchant's taunting stopped me. "Mr. Merchant, good morning." I turned to look at him with a smile. This high-profile case had already caught the attention of the media and all of the town's lawyers. Everyone has been talking exclusively about this case on crime channels since last week."Miss Luis, I finally saw you today after hearing so much about you." With arrogance, he holds out his hand to me. "It's my pleasure, sir." I give him a handshake. "After losing this case, you are always welcome to join my law firm, along with all your clients." His conceit is overpowering his experience. It is true that throughout his legal career, he never lost a single case, and even my father-in-law, who is a well-known attorney, was never able to defeat Derrick Merchant in court."Mr. Merchant, we are lawyers, and we do not have the authori
Xavier~"My Lord, we can not believe what Miss Luis is claiming by showing us the CCTV footage since there is a 15-minute gap between the timing of Alicia's murder and the footage. The food store is about five minutes away from Mr. Thompson's residence. Therefore, it's equally conceivable that he killed her after going to that supermarket." Derrick countered Bella's argument with his characteristic arrogance.I glanced at the judge, noting how deeply he was contemplating Derrick’s statement. A wave of dread crept over me. Derrick was known for twisting facts so convincingly, and I knew how easily he could steer things in his favor. I threw a fleeting look at Bella. How does she stay so calm, even under such direct attacks? Does she feel nothing when Derrick mocks her? Her silence under his verbal blows irked me. How could she endure such taunting without flinching?"Would you like to respond to Mr. Merchant’s statement, Miss Luis?" The judge’s voice broke through the tension."Of cour
Isabella~"Thank you, but I'm sorry, Mr. Thompson, because I'm not hungry right now." I didn't want to spend time with him because it was difficult for me to maintain my hard look for an extended period. Knowing what he had endured over the years made me feel sorry for him, and as a result, I find it increasingly harder to keep up my professional relationship with him. That day, I saw him eating food like a hungry animal, and I felt pity for his condition. I was taken aback when I observed him licking the lunchbox cover, which was smeared with gravy. He no longer resembled the Xavier Thompson I knew, a man known for his discerning taste in food. I vividly remember how, because of his dislike for cilantro, I adorned the dinner table with it, only to have him hurl the plate in a fit of rage. My heart compelled me to cook food for him every day so that he could have homemade meals. I don't know why I lied to him. Every day, I prepared meals for him and asked my assistant to bring him t
Xavier~"Mr. Thompson, see you tomorrow." She waved her hand after coming out of the police station. "Sure, I will be waiting for you. Take care, bella." When I saw her walking towards her car, I waved my hand. I stared at her car until it blurred from my vision. She is the woman who always takes care of my car keys and never dared to touch my car without my permission. Now she has a top model and top brand car, and she drives her cars on her own. The more time I spend with her, the more I am compelled to drool over her. I feel an overwhelming attraction towards her at all times. I let out a long sigh to escape the sadness, love, and loneliness I was experiencing inside. I'm finally out of jail after three months, but where do I go now? I'm not interested in going back home. For me, that house holds a lot of bitter memories of Alicia. I'm not sad about her passing, but her murder did cause me a lot of sadness. We got to the point where I didn't want to live with her anymore, but I
Isabella~"Bella, why are you so stubborn?" When I finally open my eyes, I'm lying on top of the file stacks. Fortunately, he threw the heavy files, which I had given him to hold, onto the floor, making it easier for me to retrieve that specific file. "Let's go." Despite the agony from falling in my ankle and lower back, I can't help but be excited to receive that specific file. I attempted to stand up from the floor but was unable to do so due to my ankle pain. "Let me help you." He reached out to touch me, but I didn't want to accept his assistance in keeping my body in balance. I can do it on my own. I don't want to be reliant on him like I was in the past. That's why I didn't allow him to help me in searching the files I wanted to read. "No, Mr. Thompson, I will manage." I tried to stand up again by pushing my body, but I was too pained to do so. "Bella, why are you behaving so stubbornly? Your ankle turned blue due to swelling. Why don't you allow me to assist you?" "No, Mr
