[Carys]
He was about to kiss me when I looked away and pulled myself out of his trap.
“I don’t regret loving you because I gave you every part of me. I loved you the best way I could, with my utmost sincerity and loyalty. There’s nothing more I could have done to make you stay or love me, only me. Being loyal and not being loyal is a choice, and you have made your choice. There’s no going back,” I said.
“I am loyal to you!” He growled, and I flinched. Suppressing his rage, he forced a smile. “Carys,” Joshua made me face him, grabbing my shoulders in a painful grip. His gaze darkened. My chest heaved faster and faster as he slammed me against the wall. “I couldn’t resist my mate, but you couldn’t either. If there’s anyone who can understand me in this situation. It’s you. So why are you…”
“I understand you, Joshua. I do. You know me. Don’t you? If you truly loved me or even respected whatever we had for ten years, you would have come to me and had a clear break up before you slept with her. But you cheated on me for two years and you want me to understand you and accept you right away? Am I not even allowed to react or say how I feel about all this?”
“Then you should have hurt me back as much as you wanted. Why did you hurt Edith? Why get the other pack involved in our personal matters?” Joshua glared at me. “Why the fuck were lycans involved? It just makes me wonder… if I was the only one cheating in our relationship. Who knows, you might still be in contact with him. Why? You still love him?”
I glared back into his eyes.
“I hate him! That’s all I have left for him after everything that’s happened. And don’t you fucking dare question my loyalty! Maybe this is what she wanted you to think. Maybe that is why she hired lycans, so that she could make you doubt me. Your mate has understood you better than me. Because the way you are right now, I can see it in your eyes. The trust between us is long gone.”
“I trust you…”
“Where? Why can’t I see the trust in your eyes, then?” I yelled, pushing him away from me.
Tears streamed down his eyes as he peered at me blankly.
I controlled myself.
“Believe me or not, but I did not hurt Edith, and I did not plan the attack and I will prove it. And I don’t know why lycans are involved in this. Ask Edith because she planned it all!”
“She planned it? Why would she do that?”
“Ask her, not me,” I snarled at him. “See through your mate bond and her lies, if you can.”
Joshua peered at me, lost in his thoughts.
I calmed myself and stepped closer to him.
“Joshua,” I smiled at him and held his hand. Gulping down the lump in my throat, I said, “I would never hurt your mate. Never involve myself with the lycans again. You have known me even since we were kids. Before anything, I am your beta and you are the most important person in my life. Anyone you love is important to me as well. Be it our pack or your luna-to-be.”
He bit his bottom lips and nodded.
“I know, Carys. I am sorry. I was swayed. But, I promise, I’ll protect you…”
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep. What we need, what I need right now, is clear boundaries drawn between us.”
“B-boundaries?”
“I wish you a happy life with your mate, Alpha Joshua, and thank you for everything you have done for me all this time. I am really grateful.” Tears trailed down my eyes. “My time with you has been most beautiful, but all of it ends here. I would fulfill all my duties as your beta as long as I have the privilege to.” I bowed.
Joshua contemplated me with bleary red eyes. He shook his head.
“Are you breaking up with me? No. I don’t accept this.”
“Please do not make things complicated, alpha.”
“No. You are the one making things complicated for me. Carys, my love for you cannot be diluted just because I found my mate. Twenty years! That’s how long I have loved you, which is almost my entire life. I have loved you ever since we were kids. I have loved you even when you decided to run away from the pack for some other man. And I have loved you and accepted you back, even after that. And this is what you do to me? How could you even think about breaking up with me?”
I peered at him blankly. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I couldn’t believe Joshua was the one saying it.
“You said you fell in love with me after my mate rejected me,” I said, confused.
“Bullshit!” He snapped, but then it seemed as if he realized something. “I-I mean… y-yeah… I realized I love you after that.”
I scrubbed my hands over my heating and numb face and took a deep breath.
“You are going to marry Princess Edith. It’s only right for me to do this,” I said. “You couldn’t do it, so I did.”
“Yes, I am marrying her. So? So what? I want her, yes. I can’t deny it. I need her. My wolf needs her. But that has nothing to do with how much I love you. I am going to marry her, but nothing changes between us, Carys.”
I frowned. “What does that even mean?”
Joshua licked his lips. “I need both of you in my life. I can’t choose. Neither of you is an option. You have always been permanent in my life, and I want it that way until I die.”
“I-I don’t think you are hearing yourself. You are telling me to be your… mistress?”
Joshua cocked a brow.
“Yeah, what’s wrong with that? As an alpha, I can make that possible and then none of us will have to sacrifice or suffer. It’s as simple as that,” Joshua smiled as if he had sorted everything. “Don’t tell me… don’t tell me it doesn’t hurt you when you say you want to end us.”
Pursing my lips tightly, I sat on the bed. My head felt too stuffy to comprehend anything at all.
Joshua sat beside me and both of us sat in silence.
I could no longer hold back tears.
“What about Edith? How do you think she will react when she becomes your wife?” I asked. “What will the pack say? What will the people say? What will the elders say about this? And me? What about me?”
“Why are you talking about her? It’s about us. Edith is becoming my wife. What else would she want? She gets to be my wife, my luna. And just because I marry her doesn’t mean I won’t pay attention to you. Of course, my time will be divided between the two of you, but my love will always be all yours,” Joshua said. “And about people and elders. I am their alpha. They won’t say a word.”
The Joshua I was talking to right now was not the Joshua I had known.
“I don’t want this. I don’t want to be your side whore! What you are proposing is an insult to me and Edith. She is your mate. She will need your undivided love and attention and time,” I said.
“Yeah, well, then she’ll have to compromise! She should be fucking grateful that I didn’t reject her! This is the least she can do for me!” He roared. “And if you are so insecure about people finding out about us, then no one needs to know! We can keep on continuing our relationship in secret like we used to.”
I froze. I cowered back, feeling the threatening aura get denser around him. Xander clearly didn’t like the way Joshua talked about his mate.
Joshua got up from the bed.
“Shit! Carys,” Joshua’s aura settled down. His voice softened. “Let’s talk about this later, ok? After the All Alpha meeting, hmm?”
Panting, I sat paralyzed on my bed.
“Reply to me!” Grabbing my arms, he yanked me against himself.
“Y-yes…”
He smiled with a nod. His gaze dropped to my lips. He brushed his thumb over my bottom lip.
“I will not give up on you. I’ll not give up on us. I’ve loved you madly and I still do,” he said in a husky whisper.
It was at that moment I realized that one can never truly know the other person even if they spend a lifetime together. Because I had never seen this side of Joshua before. Never.
He, domineeringly, wrapped his arm around my waist, his broad scorching palm ran up my back. His fingers tucked at the strings of my dress as if he wanted to tear the dress off me. But he didn’t. Rather, he pulled me in. My breasts pressed against his chest as he claimed my lips in a passionate kiss. It was deep, burning and… suffocating.
The ambience around him was so intimidating that I stood there like a statue when he kissed me, feeling nothing. For the first time, Joshua’s kiss felt as empty as my heart.
He kissed my eyelids, tucking my hair strands behind my ear.
“An All Alpha meeting is…”
“I know.”
He licked his lips and parted from me, kissing my forehead.
“Get ready. I will make preparations for your trial. I don’t care if you planned this attack or not, I am getting you out of this mess. And you are coming back to me. I’ll make sure you do.”
His eyes, his words, his aura spoke just one emotion unanimously — possessiveness.
Right before stepping out of the room, he turned and looked at me.
“He will be there, too. In the All Alpha meeting. But don’t worry, I promise, I’ll never let him get anywhere near you, ever again.”
It was then I realized that Kian Nyx Abner, my ex-mate, was now the lycan alpha of the Nyx Winter pack. So, it would be compulsory for him to attend the All Alpha meeting.
I lost the strength in my legs and slumped on the bed.
I clenched my chest with my trembling fingers, panting.
“What do I do now?”
Kian was nothing but a grave mistake in my life. In the past, we had parted ways with nothing but mutual hatred and a lot of regrets.
Ten years and I was still not ready to face him again.
[Carys] The impending All Alpha meeting was a week away. I prepared what I could from the confinement of four walls for my defense during that period. Everyone who attended the party or was present during the attack in the Spring palace stayed in the Spring pack. The only person who would hear me and could help me in that critical situation was Alpha Dominic. During this time, my respect for Dominic grew even more. He was enraged because his sister was hurt, but he handled the situation in the most rational manner. He heard my side of the story. I told him someone was trying to frame me, but I didn’t tell him it was Edith. “If you can show me the proof, I will have no option but to trust you,” Dominic said. “But as of now, every proof is against you.” “I understand. Did you find the one who was spying on me in the woods?” I asked. Dominic’s composed expressions turned pensive. “Actually…” “You couldn’t find him? You just found his phone?” I asked. Dominic looked outside the w
[Carys]The All Alpha Court convened as everyone prepared for the meeting.“The meeting is private and will be recorded,” announced Liam Harrison, the beta of the Alpha king. “All attendees must maintain confidentiality. The Percy Spring pack’s Alpha, Dominic Percy, has called for this meeting to address concerns regarding the Nightfall Autumn pack’s beta, Carys Elffire. According to the terms of the All Alpha Court, all alphas from the three werewolf packs are in attendance. Two alphas from the lycan packs are also here. We have the required quorum to commence the meeting in ten minutes.”In this world, existed three werewolf packs and three lycan packs, each of which was led by an alpha. However, there was an independent body called the All Alpha Court (AAC), responsible for monitoring the alphas, betas, and gammas of all the packs. The AAC headquarters was located in an apolitical area known as the Neutral zone. This zone was completely free from political influences. However, majo
[Carys]I peered at Joshua blankly.I knew why he said that. I knew it was best for us to bury the relationship we had never revealed to the world. Revealing it now would only make things worse. Even with all those reasons, an unfathomable ache stung my heart.Holding back my tears, I nodded.“People often mistake friendship between a man and a woman. It’s nothing new,” I said, holding Joshua’s gaze. Swallowing the tight emotions lumping in my throat, I forced a smile. “But I am at fault for overstepping my boundaries. I should have known. I should have been more cautious. As for love…”I broke into laughter.“Please pardon me, Alpha king. But love is the most absurd word in this world — the greatest mockery in life. Only fools would fall for such a delusion and I am… no fool,” I said.I had been foolish to seek love in others when it never truly existed — not in this world — not in the men I loved. It was nowhere, no more. Not even in my heart.Uncomfortable silence settled in the h
[Carys] The guard knocked at the door. “Pardon me, beta, but the meeting is about to begin in ten minutes.” Sniffling, I wiped off my tears. Splashing water on my face, I got myself together. The world doesn’t have to know how it was breaking me. Even if I go down today, I will not let my enemies have the satisfaction of seeing me shatter. I took a deep breath and headed back towards the hall. Thankfully, I didn’t encounter Joshua or Edith on the way. Anxiety churned in the stomach as I stepped closer to the hall. I knew what was coming for me and I wasn’t ready for it. My position as beta had been the only thing keeping me sane in my life. To work for others, to tend to my pack. This position had kept me busy and away from the memories that could have turned my life darker. It gave me a sense of purpose and a reason to live. I had been brought up to be a beta. I didn’t know what I’d do if they took it away from me. I stopped before entering the hall and I could hear the Alpha’s
[Carys]Edith’s face nearly broke into a bright, victorious smile, but she managed to mask it with a subtle smirk in her eyes.A satisfactory smile appeared on Christian’s face that he didn’t even bother hiding.Joshua let out an exasperated sigh, tensed.“Until we resolve this case, Alpha Joshua must officially relieve Carys Elffire of her beta duties and select a new beta for his pack. AAC can provide him with a new beta, or he can choose one independently. Whether to keep or temporarily expel beta Carys from the Autumn pack will entirely depend on Alpha Joshua. The only condition is that a guard from AAC will remain with Carys Elffire at all times. If she’s expelled, Carys Elffire will have to stay in the Neutral Zone until the case concludes.” Liam read aloud from his laptop, and then all eyes were on Joshua. My nails dug into my skin as I waited for his reply. My heart roared wildly in my chest until the silence hung in the hall.“I respect AAC’s decision and I am sure my beta wi
[Carys] “I want it done within a week. Do you get it? I want the best of everything. We need to show those lycans that we are no less than them. This will be a display of not just our power, but our wealth and richness. So I want everything to be perfect. Yes—” “Joshua,” I called out to him while he was busy talking to the wedding planner on his phone. We were in his office in the Autumn pack. “Just a second, Carys,” Joshua tucked his phone between his shoulder and ear. “Yes, I have the guest list ready…” he shuffled through a few pages on his desk and handed a letter to me. “No. The most expensive ones. I need both the quality and the quantity. I want them to remember this party. It will be a slap on their faces…” He went on with his talk as I read the content on the page. Letter of temporary leave? I looked at Joshua, confused. Joshua covered the phone with his hands and whispered to me, “just sign it and leave the rest to me.” Then he went on to talk to the wedding planner.
[Carys] Edith’s glare bore into me as she snatched her phone from my hands. “What do you think you’re doing with my phone?” she snapped. “I thought Lady Valentina forgot her phone. Her phone’s identical to yours. There was a message notification, and I thought it could be something important related to your wedding…” “Even if it were her phone, you had no right to check it.” “I wasn’t checking it. I was going to give it to her.” “Stay in your limits, Carys. You are nothing but a suspect right now. Your carefree actions can put you in greater trouble,” Edith said with a smile, then she chuckled. “No matter what you do, you aren’t getting out of this situation. And I will make sure this gets worse for you. Right now, you have only lost your job. Once I become the luna of this pack, you will lose everything. Why do you think I brought up marriage in the meeting? This pack will be mine in two days and I am in a hurry to clean it up by throwing garbage like you out of it.” I sighed.
[Carys]“Apologies,” Kian whispered, his tone stoic. His voice was tenderly cold yet deep, like a drifting melody on a silent, snowy night.I blinked, lost in his intense gaze for longer than I should have.“Lady Carys, are you ok? We are extremely sorry, we didn’t see you coming,” Jackson’s voice brought me back from the trance. A trance dominated by flickering memories of the past that still washed afresh on my skin like a downpour in a desert. His touch burnt through my clothes as he slid his hand from my arm to my elbow. I would have fallen if he hadn’t held me at the right time. I would have preferred falling than being saved by him.Don’t you fucking touch me! Don’t you dare save me again! — The words screamed in my mind, yet I clenched my jaw, swallowing them down.I wrenched out my arm from his grip and stepped away from him, breathing heavily. My heart thundered in my chest, loud enough to fill the awkward silence that hung between us.“I apologize for my carelessness, Alpha

[Carys]“At the conclusion of this meeting, this is my final verdict in compliance with the vote of other alphas — the Autumn pack will not be dissolved. As proposed by the Gamma Mic of Autumn pack, the Autumn pack will be run under emergency conditions with the gamma assuming the beta’s position and upholding the pack. The rank of the alpha of the Autumn pack will remain empty until Alpha Joshua’s child is born. AAC will assist the Autumn pack at every stage of recovery.” I didn’t attend the meeting, but turns out Verity had other ways to have a peek into everything that happened in the conference hall. “Edith Percy Nightfall’s punishment will be postponed until and after the heir of the Autumn pack reaches the age of five. She will be convicted like everyone else who was responsible for the Blank Space incident. Until then, she’ll remain under AAC’s surveillance.” I let out a sigh. “As per Alpha Dominic’s request, the Spring pack will monitor and take care of Edith Percy Nightfal
[Carys]Hoot!Snow White perched herself on Kian’s chest.“Kian’s soul has sustained severe injuries, Carys,” Moratia said. “It will take years for him to recover. The Bond that remains in his soul will help in his recovery. Keep Snow White close to him. She’ll help feed him the spiritual energy he needs through this mist. We are taking Mizkeal’s soul with us.”She looked at Death. Death turned his face towards Moratia and gave a slight nod.I lifted my gaze and looked at Moratia. The Ravens and crows that ripped Mizkeal’s soul away from Kian had long disappeared into the dark portal with his soul. The portal revolved behind Death’s divine yet haunting figure. His face was covered with a skull mask.He turned towards the portal and stretched out his hand towards Moratia. She glanced at me and smiled.“Thank you for everything, Carys,” she said before she turned around and looked into his eyes before placing her hand in his. They walked into the dark portal. Once their figures were e
[Carys]Moratia slowly looked around to see Alpha King and Liam standing near the borders with their army. After all the destruction Mizkeal caused, it was only logical for him to take things in his hand.Levi stood beside them, staring at us. I could tell by the look on his face that he tried his best to hold Alpha King back, but couldn’t. The same look was on Verity’s face.Verity tried to run towards us when Alpha King ordered one of his soldiers to take her away from the battlefield.Nox stood with the other members of the SW, looking frantically around the battlefield. He was clearly looking for Morana.Morana and Christian had fallen into the mist together, but I hadn’t seen them after that. I could only hope that they were ok.Dominic and Ash walked through the crowd of soldiers to the front-lines, taking in the situation.Of course, all of them felt the horror of Mizkeal’s wrath.“Brother!” My eyelids fluttered towards Aamna as she tried to cross the borders and come to our si
[Carys]I could feel everything Moratia felt. All the centuries of life, love and death flashed in her soul. Her soul was elated to see Mizkeal again, and the way he recognized her again filled her with hope, but it didn’t take long to shatter. Somewhere in him, she yearned to find the man she fell in love with. The prince who taught her how to live. But neither was Mizkeal the same, nor was his love for her. The pure love that a fae price once had for her had turned into a madness of a fae lord. He loved her, yes. But in a constant fear of losing her and that kind of love leads to desperation. And that desperation had blinded Mizkeal.I could actually understand the reason behind his desperation because I was desperate, too. I was desperate to save Kian, bring him back, and I was ready to do anything that could make that possible.Marrying him or not marrying him would depend on Moratia. And I knew whatever she chose would affect me significantly, so I had to brace myself for whateve
[Mizkeal]I didn’t care what happened inside me. I used every ounce of my soul for this last attack. The world could end at its own accord, but…I shifted my glare at Carys. To end her was my right.Peering at me, she got to her feet. Holding my gaze, she stood calmly amidst the exploding ground around her. She licked her lips before taking a deep breath. She smiled gently and shut her eyes, allowing the tears welled in her eyes to trail down her beautiful face.I landed on the ground. Dust and debris of the ground blasted all around us as I strutted towards her.I grabbed her wrist and yanked her closer, barely holding back my rage. The chimes of her crown jingled louder than the exploding earth, sending goosebumps all over my body.“Open your eyes…” I commanded in a slightly shivering tone.I grabbed her upper arms tighter.“Open your eyes!” I snarled at her.She shook her head, her lips trembling as she took in a shuddering breath through her tears.“Carys!”“You know my name, my p
[Mizkeal]Christian held back his groan, gritting his teeth as he glared at me with bloodshot eyes.“Why is everyone so stubborn here?” I sighed. “Well, pain is a choice, and you chose not to show it. I respect that.”“Shove that respect up your ancient ass and get out of my best friend’s body,” he growled, glaring right into my eyes.I chuckled wryly. “You have a strange sense of humor. How does it feel to be in that head of yours, to have a tongue sharper than your claws? There is no real damage you can do to me.”Christian laughed obnoxiously. “That’s the stupidest thing I have ever heard.”“Oh! Have you ever heard yourself?” I taunted back.Morana let out a titter with a smirk spread across her lips.I shifted my gaze to Morana, whose calculative eyes analyzed me.She was the one important to me, but I was still not sure if I could absorb my heart and Bond without damaging them both in the process.I couldn’t risk absorbing Bond while she had my heart because then… it could damage
[Mizkeal]As I soared towards the sky, a wave of raging adrenaline pumped through my veins, pounding in my ears.Carys Elffire was playing a dangerous game. She split the Bond in two parts! How the hell did she split it apart? But what I failed to understand was how she got a hold on Bond so quickly. A day ago, she couldn’t even keep its power in control and now she had split it in two?But what I wanted to know was how far she had decoded Bond and its abilities.Bond was far more powerful than before. New elements were added into Bond and I hadn’t had enough time to decipher all of them, either. So, it was important for me to know how much she had deciphered it or altered it.With a swift blow of my mana, I created a squall that tore the mist apart for a few seconds. It gave me enough time to escape. The mist swirled around me, playing with my head, bringing out the memories that were impossible for me to resist or ignore. Despite my efforts, echoes of Moratia’s voice haunted me, blu
[Carys]Parting from Mizkeal, I held his hands in mine. His calculative silver eyes narrowed on our hands before he looked into my eyes, as though he could see my soul.“I know what you are thinking. But I am not here for you,” I said, holding his gaze. “I’m here for Kian because I cannot lose him.”He smirked faintly, his eyes calling me out for being delusional.“If Kian lives on in you, as you… then I agree to that fate,” I said, looking into his eyes. “If his soul is merged in yours, then I’ll love his torn soul through you. If you go beyond that border, Alpha King will do everything in his power to stop you. He will kill my Kian and… I can’t let that happen. So, I’ve stopped them. I lied to them. I told them I can… stop you. But I know I can’t.”Mizkeal narrowed his eyes.“You’ve been madly in love, Mizkeal, with a woman. So, I know you understand my desperation, and this might be the stupidest decision I make for this world, but keeping you safe is the only way I can ensure Kian
