"Maya, Maya?"
After God knows how long, Maya drowned in the absolute void when suddenly a faint voice rose, calling her name.
The darkness surrounding her faded away, and now Maya heard sounds, felt warmth, and saw–
Light. Light came knocking on her eyelids.
She opened her eyes, and before she could focus them, she saw a nebulous face came dangerously close. She flinched, only to gasp in utter fear when she recognized that face–
It was Jason!
“Are you okay?” Jason leaned in, his blue eyes getting closer and closer, taking air out of Maya’s lungs. His right hand reached behind her, seemingly to hug her.
Maya couldn’t read the care in those blue eyes, when all she could see in her mind was the coldness in them when she was dying on the floor. The desperation of death gripped her throat and then washed her through. Fear, anger, detestation. Her body couldn’t seem to handle all the emotions rampaging inside her so they all rushed up to the back of her tongue.
She stopped her gagging with a hard swallow as she backed several steps in panic, trying to put distance from that upsetting face, only to bump into the person behind her.
But at least, Jason didn’t get to hug her for that. Maya thought. It was worth it.
The man she bumped into steadied her body with a hand under her elbow, right before Jason grabbed her wrist and pulled her to him again. This time Maya saw the genuine care in Jason’s eyes, very much different from the cold ones she saw right before her death.
What was wrong with Jason?
Actually! What was wrong with her?!
Shock gripped Maya’s throat. She died! She fell down the staircase and died! The piercing pain in her chest was still so vivid that Maya felt her breathes hurt even though she couldn’t find the wound on her chest anymore.
What happened?!
Her mind was a total mess now. The only thing her twirling brain could process was her hatred toward Jason.
All his guile, his malevolence, her resentment, her rancor… Death was supposed to have taken them away, but they all came back to her the moment she saw Jason’s face again!
Feeling her hatred and anger would break loose if she sees that face for one more second, Maya chose to distract herself and turned with gratitude to the man who helped her.
“No problem,” The man said, and only then did Maya notice – it was Damian!
Damian? Maya blinked in utter confusion.
“What’s wrong, sweetheart? Tired?” Jason pulled her back, again, ignoring her little interaction with Damian.
Couldn’t face Jason, Maya grabbed her own temple and temporized with a faint voice: “Maybe…I'm fine, don’t worry…”
It was then did the buzzing sound around her became clear, and her eyes fell on herself –
She was in a wedding dress! The three-layer, laced, light, smooth, special-made wedding dress that she spent a fortune on–
This was her wedding day!
“Let’s get you a place to rest then,” Jason smiled at her answer, getting relieved. He had the kind of sunny face that can infect people at ease. But it failed on Maya this time. Biting her lips, Maya tried her best to suppress her nausea as she followed Jason’s lead.
Sitting at the corner of the bar, Maya was relieved when Jason finally left her alone after checking several times that she was okay. His care was the last thing she needed right now.
She needed to figure out what happened.
For some reason, she was back on her wedding day after she died on her living room floor. The arrangement looked exactly the same as the wedding in her memory. She knew. She was the one taking care of all the details, even though to her, this wedding ended four years ago.
So…she was back alive?
What were the past four years then? Was it all just too real a dream? Or did she really live through the four dark years to that horrible ending? All the memory of those four years were still printed in her mind, bloody vivid. She could still feel the pain after she fell to her death, the desperation as drained out of her, the anger burst out of her in that argument – the first and only argument she ever had with Jason, and the countless times when she backed down from Jason just to avoid a fight…
Maya gritted her hand, her nails cutting deep into her palm at the anger rose by those memories.
It couldn’t be all bad, could it? Maya closed her eyes, and the angelic smile on Madeline’s face appeared, as well as the beautiful sound every time the word mom came out of her lovely daughter…
…and, her wedding. One of the few days when she was truly happy last time.
She was happy as a bird last time – flying around the hall, joking with everyone with loud laughter. Unlike now – exhausted, jittery…angry.
The four years had to be real! Otherwise she wouldn’t have so much strong, negative emotions embedded in her soul!
No matter how unlikely, she had to accept that she was back to life, four years ago no less. She could only call this a touch of God, and she was more than grateful for a second chance like this.
Only…bitterness spread in her mouth when Maya looked down on her wedding dress again –
Why did she have to come back on this particular day?
If God was granting second chances, why couldn’t he take her a little bit earlier in her life? Even if just one day she could have stopped the wedding and left Jason, steering far away from the four years of mistakes.
She looked at the reception party, the party she planned for so long last life, with desperate, gloomy eyes. The room was shining, and the guests laughing, especially the guy who just registered with her earlier this day, Jason.
But her happiness was no longer there.
With only a peek at Jason’s face, Maya’s stomach turned, and she quickly darted her eyes off him, only to bump into Damian’s eyes by accident.
Maya was not used to see Damian by Jason’s side. She knew Damian was Jason’s great friend, but now she looked back, only to realize that it seemed to be after their wedding when Jason started drifting away from Damian.
Every time she brought up Damian in front of Jason, she would get only relunctant answers. She used to think it was Damian who drifted away because his career went up the sky, and no longer had time for ordinary couples like them. She even felt a slight resentment towards Damian for that.
But when she went to Damian for helf after she suspected Jason, Damian still sat down with her in great patience, and even helped her with evidences beyond her request. Though he looked cold that time, but then again, that man always looked cold and distant…to everyone.
He was the opposite of Jason, who wears sunny smiles on the outside, but is corrupted rotten inside.
If she remembered correctly, when she asked Damian what he planned to do with all the evidence on Jason’s crime, his exact answer was, “Probably give him another chance…”
Staring at the man for too long, Damian suddenly looked up and met her eyes directly. He nodded at her lightly in a distance.
Somehow, in his poker face and icy eyes, Maya felt a hint of worrisome.
That, coming from the last person who showed her kindness last life, gave Maya a little warmth. She managed a faint smile in return, but Damian paused at her forced smile and then looked away.
Cold sweat broke out of Maya again – no one knew she replaced herself from four years ago! She was supposed to be the carefree little bird that flies through guests right now!
This was the sweetest period between her and Jason, and there wasn’t supposed to be anyone in her eyes, anyone but Jason! Not to mention, she was never close with Damian, the least now!
Sure, she managed to fool Jason once, but now what? She couldn’t hide behind her “mild discomfort” forever!
Could she just out with her story and tell people about Jason’s crime, cheating, and the fact that he would basically kill her? People would only think she was crazy!
The memory of the four years, belonged only to her now!
Maya pressed on her own temples – a real headache kicked in.
She can’t let people know about her reborn. It wouldn’t benefit her at all, but just might push her into a worse situation. Actually, she had to hide it, and hide it well! She couldn’t give anyone even the slightest reason to suspect her of knowing something she was not supposed to!
In that second, Maya pulled one string out of the mess in her mind – no one could know about her reborn!
She had to pretend to be herself from four years ago. She had to suppress her hatred, and hide her disgust at all cost, just so she could find a chance to leave Jason safely.
No, not good enough!
The pain and desperation still printed on her soul, how could she just leave and let him get away with everything?! What he had done to her was done and no police could punish him now, but she remembered! And if she couldn’t revenge for what Jason did to her last life, at least she would find out what he had done and will do this life, and she will make sure Jason pays for every bit of his sin!
Taking a deep breath to calm herself, Maya tried to take control of herself.
She was grateful for this extra life. She wanted to survive, and live this time, to live a satisfying life with a clearer mind.
This time, she will steer her own path.
The end of the wedding was finally here. No matter how reluctant, Maya had no choice but to enter the car with Jason. The car had only so much space. Sitting on the shotgun, Maya pressed herself on the window to put distance between her and her murderer. But even so, the compressed room didn’t help her with the sick feeling in her stomach every time the notion of being so close with Jason kicked in. Sick. That was all she felt. She kept sliding down, and soon leaned against the window, half lying down, looking weak. She was physically weak. She could tell. She wanted to get away from Jason, but her brain was on a strike due to the pounding pain in her temples. That made her feel even more powerless. The powerless feeling created frustration in her chest, but she had no energy to deal with it. Suffering alone in silence was not at all Maya's style. If it was the old her, she would be on Jason already, asking for hugs and comfort when she was not feeling well. But that was t
Had Jason always been this selfish, self-centered man from the beginning?! Savoring this new realization, Maya can’t remember. In her memory, there never seemed to be much stumbling between the two of them. Occasionally there were small differences of opinion. Jason can always come up with some tricks to divert her attention with sweet words and small sweet surprises, and she seems to no longer insist on the original idea after those little surprises. Basically, it had always been like that. She used to be very satisfied with Jason's little tricks of comforting her, and felt that he had a good personality and was considerate. She had never thought about what would happen if the problems between the two were not resolved in Jason's way. It would end up like today, right? Because she didn't give him the respond he wanted, because she refunded the ticket without his approval, then, he immediately flips to the angry mode? So, if she just doesn't cooperate and doesn't back down, what
The taillights of the car dashed off as the roar of its engine died away. Maya was stunned. In the two of her lives, this was the second time she had a fight with Jason, and it ended up with Jason leaving her on the street. Well, it could have been worse? He could have run her over. This time, Maya didn’t feel bad for too long for Jason. Actually, Jason gave her exactly what she wanted – distance from him! She could take this chance to calm down from her own death and reborn without facing her murderer. Maya was glad she tested her theory, and glad to see Jason clearer this lifetime so early. till wearing her wedding dress, Maya had only a thin coat on the outside. The only good thing was the flat shoes she changed into before leaving the wedding hall. The flat shoes allowed her to stand firmly and walk smoothly, but they also caused the skirt to completely drag on the ground. She had to hold the skirt up with both her hands to keep from tripping over it. However, that left her w
Maya waited for 10 days before she made an appointment with Damian. The 10 days was her way of acting as a newlywed. If it were known that she and Jason quarreled so much that their honeymoon was ruined, there would be too much to explain. After all, they were still a loving couple on the wedding. During these 10 days, she rented a small apartment, got familiar with the living environment around the apartment, recalled the work she was doing before she got married and left the job, and even reviewed and sorted out the various laws, rules, and program, general flow. For the first time in four years, her time was entirely her own. Needless to say, she enjoyed it quite a bit. Damian was on the rise in his career and had his hands full. On the phone, he searched his tight schedule for a long time, but couldn't find a suitable time. Maya didn't want to embarrass him too much, so she suggested to bring lunch for him in the office. "Isn't that appropriate?" Damian hesitated when he hear
Maya was a little surprised by his objective calm tone, and looked up at him: "Yes. So I came back early to try to solve work problems." What she said was also the truth, she just didn't tell him about the quarrel. This is not lying. When Damian got the answer, he nodded again: "Keeping your work may not be a bad thing for you. Now let's talk about your problem." Said that, he took a sip of his coffee and started to eat. "I do have some problems at work." Maya thought for a while, and decided to start with the simplest personnel relationship, "I don’t know if you know my boss, Jerry Hall? Let’s start with things that has been in my office, he…" Maya tried her best to explain the matter tactfully, explaining that she was looking at it from her own point of view. Based on her memory of Jerry Hall, she briefly mentioned one or two things: He did not mention a word in front of the client about the documents Maya had worked so hard to complete, saying he completed the work on his own; he
9:00 A.M., Maya was already sitting at her desk, checking the latest case in the firm's database Content on her computer. The coffee at hand was made by the coffee machine in the law firm kitchen. Looking at the text on the screen, she casually took a sip before frowning deeply. In her mouth was burnt bitterness, and a smell of rotten steak rushes up her nose. She couldn't help but frown and stick out her tongue. "I wasn’t fooling you when I told you the coffee in the law firm is just trash.”A familiar voice came from ahead. She looked up, and sure enough, it was Damian. Maya shrugged and smiled: "I just wanted to give it a chance." "It's better not to have any expectations." Damian nodded slightly, "How’s your first day going?" He still didn't have any expression, his tone was flat, and his movements were swift, as if he just came for a few words out of politeness. But Maya was able to tell that he was in a good mood. It seems that those four years of extra life didn’t leave her
It was pouring Monday morning, and the road started to get stuck in traffic. Maya ended the Uber order halfway and walked nearly two miles to the office on foot. She was in a hurry, out of breath, and still late. Fortunately, a large number of colleagues in the law firm's work system were reporting late, and the partners also notified the team, and all work arrangements were postponed for half an hour. Even though with an umbrella, her clothes still got wet, and the damp and cold breath seeped into her skin, making her feel sticky and cold. She threw the umbrella in the bag on the ground, took out the computer in the bag to make sure it wasn't wet, and couldn't help shivering a little when she was about to sit down. It was too cold. She stomped her feet, opened the drawer and took out the cup, then turned and went to the pantry. Even if the coffee in the law firm is terrible, something hot would be nice. Various machines in the tea room have been started, and new coffee powder and
Sophia was wearing a gray-purple suit, with one side of her golden half-length curly hair tucked behind the ears while the other side loose, looking at them with a smile. When Maya met her for the first time, with her blond hair, blue eyes, and the way she spoke, Maya thought she just met a female version of Jason. But after talking to her, she found that they are completely different—Jason was good at making everything look simple and easy, acting as if there is no big deal; while Sophia had a sharp and direct character, never avoiding problems, but will hit the nail on the head and point out the problem. They did share the same eye color, but that blue was a kind of inducing gentleness on Jason, yet it become a sharp knife that penetrates everything on Sophia. When she looks directly at you, you feel forced to the corner, and could only face her with utter honesty. Right now her blue eyes were not at its sharpest, but her natural daring aura on her cannot be ignored. Damian did
"Then what's the point?" Damian shrugged, "Let's eat talk about it."He threw the dumpling into his mouth and ate it."Sophia and the others, do they all know that you are leaving?" Maya felt her mind was a little confused, so she found the simplest question and threw it away first."Them? They should have always known that this day would come." Damian thought for a while, "But I haven't officially announce anything on the date."Well, that means she was probably the first to know that he was returning to the family business. Maya felt a subtle sense of psychological satisfaction."Okay." Maya shrugged, "I never thought you would inheriting the family business. It feels bit sudden."Before today, Damian in her mind had always been a reliable senior, a peer who called each other. He is indeed much richer than her, but he doesn't have obvious rich habits, which is completely different from Vincent and the like. She also hadn't considered the possibility of his identity changing. Now, s
In a cafe near the law firm.Maya sat by the window, watching the number of people in the store getting fewer and fewer, watching the sunlight on the street outside the window getting darker and darker, and the lights getting brighter and brighter. People who were in a hurry to get off work left, and people who went out for a walk or play after dinner appeared again. She only took a sip of the coffee placed in front of her. A book open on the table, and not even one page turned. She peeled off the skin on the edge of her thumbs, and she couldn’t even feel the pain.Damian took Jason away. What will they talk about? Will Jason take another chance to get something out of Damian?Although she was well aware of Damian's intelligence and ability, she still couldn't help but worry. After all, Jason got into trouble because of her. Finally, a familiar voice appeared outside the window.Maya stood up immediately and couldn't wait to greet Damian when he stepped into the store door and asked,
"You're the one who's crazy alright?!" Unable to escape, Maya gritted her teeth and retorted. It was after hours. People are going in and out of the building. Not want to be the center of an ugly gossip, Maya lowered her voice when he didn’t turn to violence too fast. Her wrist still hurt from being squeezed."The client that Damian introduced to me!" Jason seemed really anxious. He ignored Maya's scolding and raised his hand to pull her forward, "Don't say you don't know!""What should I know?!" He used too much force, and Maya felt that her wrist was about to be broken. In pain, she began to struggle again.Based on the key words of Jason's question, she had some guesses about his question.Could it be that something happened so quickly to the customer Damian told her about?"You really don't know?" Jason snorted angrily. He gritted his teeth and stared at her for a long time, looking at her expression as she focused on staying away from him. Finally, he took two deep breaths, nodde
"Legal Advisor" Damian is very professional. After receiving the payment, he helped "client" Maya sort out several typical emotional needs, and attached possible manifestations, as well as replacement conditions that can be used for negotiation. For Maya, the "client", the process of payment is pleasant both physically and mentally, and the advice received is very professional and of high reference value. The only minor drawback was that after the payment, the client felt a little mentally exhausted, but the consultant insisted on finishing the consulting.Of course, the advice itself was good.Based on the suggestion, Maya asked Tanya to review her relationship experience, try to judge her husband's psychological needs, and then design tests to determine the negotiation plan. But her proposal encountered a slight setback.Tanya is unwilling to carry out the plan or even review the life between the two of them."No, no, no. Looking back now, every detail tells me that I was a fool." T
Breaths entwine with each other.Maya felt that she might have been bewitched in some way.The cold woody aroma of Damian's body mixed with his own scent, creating a thick, warm undertone, but almost cold to the touch, like mint and snow. This breath is just like him. When it is first touched, it is cold and sharp, stimulating people to wake up. When the mellow and warm part penetrates, people are already immersed in it unconsciously. She sniffed this smell, hooked her smooth muscles on her shoulders, and touched her lips and tongue repeatedly with him. Nothing else mattered, and the two of them became each other's center, as if souls had been exchanged through such a touch. And Damian was obviously as immersed in it as she was. He held her back with one hand and pressed the nape of her neck, while the other hand was pressed against her lower back, rubbing it unconsciously as he moved. After an unknown amount of time, Maya's waist touched something a little hard. The thing seemed to a
"It's not too difficult to be prepared." Damian raised his hand to wipe offher frown, "But providing solutions will cost you morein my bill.""No problem!" Maya immediately regained her relaxed posture, raised her hands, and asked him to hurry up and continue serving. Non worriedat all whether she, as a “customer”, was being too generous.Damian seemed to be very satisfied with her reaction. The hand that was pressing on her forehead slid down smoothly, and the back of his hand lightly rubbed her cheek before taking it back and spoke unhurriedly:"The only common methods used by people like them are coaxing, threatening, and buying. Coaxing is not suitable for people who are familiar with it. According to your information, he used to control your customers before, mainly using so-called legal threats. Now, this approach doesn’t work, so the only option left is bribery.”&n
When the two were sitting on the sofa reading a book together, Maya chatted with Damian about Tanya's case. She and Damian were shoulder to shoulder, and the book she held in her hands hadn't turned a page for nearly ten minutes. She had read a passage three or four times, but she didn't really remember what the book said. All she could think about was what Sophia said a few days ago."It seems like a waste of resources if you don't ask him."Sophia's encouragement has helped her overcome the psychological barrier of "exploiting relationships outside of work". Damian is by your side now, and you can ask for his opinion just by opening your mouth. So, should she speak up?Considering the issue of customer privacy, should she obtain first Tanya’s consent before discussing with a third person? She bit her lip and hesitated, but she didn't notice that Damian had put down the book in his hand at some point and tilted his head to look at her. After watching for a while, Damian finally touch
Tanya burst out laughing, though someone just looked her in the eye and said harsh words."Ah, I was too slowly today. I should have told him before he left that asking you to be my lawyer was the most correct decision I have ever made!" She laughed so hard she bent over with her hand on her her stomach, almost fell on the table. After finally laughing enough, she stood up, walked to the two female lawyers, and gave them each a hug: "Really, thank you. Sophia, Maya, if you have seen how my conversation with him ended last time, you will understand how happy I truly am today!"Seeing Tanya's smile and hearing her words, Maya truly understood Sophia's intentions."But I angered him. If he goes back today, he will probably discuss a solution with your husband and embarrass you." Sophia tilted her head and reminded Tanya. And not sure whether it was because Tanya was too happy or because she really didn't care, she waved her hand and said, "Let them think of a solution. At least today I k
Maya doesn't want to take the time to hear what Jason did. But she was really curious about the method Damian used to stop Jason from causing trouble."I just gave him a client." Damian's eyes were still very sincere when he told the story, "This client is a bit troublesome to me, but it is an opportunity for him. If he can restrain his desire, nothing bad will happen. .”Maya felt that behind his sincerity, she also saw cunning. A very flexible and calm cunning. This made her look forward to Jason’s choice with this client. Her expectations were so strong that when she was working, she would get distracted from time to time, imagining the scene where the two people were left to their own devices, facing the court's judgment."You were a little distracted today." Tanya's voice woke Maya up.Maya was startled, quickly recovered, and looked up at Tanya. But the look in Tanya’s eyes was not dissatisfaction, but rather, gossip."Anything fun and happy? Why don't you tell me?" Tanya rested
